We were counting on The Hollywood Reporter’s chief television critic Dan Fienberg to help us diagnose the issues with the thirteenth season of American Horror Story, and luckily he came through in a discussion that covered excessive fan service, when the “ew” and the “…huh” don’t balance each other, and the sin of wasting John Waters. We went Around The Dial with the new A Different World, My Brilliant Career, and American Hostage before Seth served up a Canon pitch for Hannibal‘s second-season finale. Mary Poppins won, Brandi Glanville lost, and we didn’t wait ’til the middle of the night to step on a Lego-based Game Time. Grab a handful of swabs and have a listen!

02:50
Welcome, Dan.
Dan
02:52
Thank you guys much for having me. I'm very honored.
Tara
02:55
Well, you say that now, but we are here to talk about American Horror Stories season thirteen.
Dan
03:00
Don't don't think I didn't notice what you brought me on to talk about, but I'm still honored.
Sarah
03:04
Yeah, we never saw him again.
Tara
03:07
In this season, Ben, played by Joey Pilari, is a hospice nurse who, straight off surviving a plane crash that killed his girlfriend and almost everyone else on board, is assigned to provide nighttime care to Mr. Nas. Fedor Steer, an eighty-seven year old man who doesn't look a day over six hundred, and just about everything that happens in mister Nas 's apartment, which takes up the whole thirteenth floor of his building is triggering to Ben's triskaidekaphobia, which is fear of the number 13, just like the season of American Horror Story that we are in. American Horror Story was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. The first three episodes premiered on FX last Thursday, September 24th. That is all we have seen. Let's do the chen check-in, Dan. Should our listeners watch? Season thirteen of American Horror Story. Very eloquent. Perfect.
Dan
04:04
I'm supposed to do that for fifteen seconds, right?
Dave
04:06
Yeah, yeah.
Tara
04:08
Sarah
Sarah
04:09
Uh no.
Tara
04:10
Dave
Dave
04:14
I thought the show was supposed to be scary, so it's a no for me, because I wasn't scared. I was just bored.
Tara
04:20
Yeah, it's a no for me as well, and I think I've watched the most American horror story of everyone, but there are definitely seasons that I have dipped on, and this is probably gonna be one of them.
Sarah
04:21
Yeah.
Dave
04:24
Yeah I'm familiar enough with the show to know that it can be moody and scary.
Tara
04:33
Yeah.
Dave
04:33
I remember, I think the last time I watched it, there was an Axeman
Sarah
04:35
Mm-hmm
Dave
04:37
going around making sure you were listening to jazz that season.
Tara
04:39
That's the coven season, yes.
Dave
04:40
Yeah, that was pretty good.
Tara
04:41
Mm-hmm. Yeah
Dave
04:42
But this, I don't know what's happened in the universe since then, but holy cow
Tara
04:45
Well, I'm starting to wonder if uh the creative team is responding to criticism that they start plot strong and then lose the thread by just starting with no plot at all. But let's get into it. Dan, given the the light plot, would you say this franchise has just become so critic proof that it no longer bothers trying to tell a coherent story or any story, or did you feel there were different problems with The show
Dan
05:11
There there are so many problems it would be hard to know necessarily where to start. I uh what what I do want to say though is congratulations on successfully providing a plot summary for the season
Tara
05:19
is a little bit more than a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
Dan
05:21
because I was not sure how you were going to do it. Because the the plot summary as I would have done it is something along the lines of Some guy who's afraid of the number 13 gets a job swabbing the urethra of the Six Flags guy, hilarious Hijinx and Sue. I I like really I could not have told you what this season is about. Watching this, my only thought was
Sarah
05:42
Uh
Dan
05:44
imagine tuning in for this with no context at all. And watching three episodes of this, what exactly would you come away telling people that you had just watched and why would you have watched for three episodes?
Tara
05:58
Mm-hmm.
Dan
05:58
That is That is the thing that baffles me, is what the hell is the season about? Why is any of this happening? And also, and this is really the important thing. The Ryan Murphy shows, I've always kind of been able to excuse them, even if I'm not interested, because it gives the impression that the actors are having fun. That he's giving the actors wacky things to do that they've never done before. And it's like, okay, awesome, you go, Ryan Murphy, employ Jessica Lange, give her things to do. But if every single one of these people is playing characters that they've already played before, and the characters are largely interchangeable in their degree of badly accented camp. How is this even fun for the actors?
Tara
06:42
Yeah.
Dan
06:42
It isn't fun to watch. It doesn't look like it's fun for them. Why is it happening?
Tara
06:46
Great question
Dave
06:48
I just want to interject here At any mention now of the old guy in the show, I'm gonna put we like to party brackets the Venga bus under it. Okay, proceed.
Sarah
06:57
Mm-hmm.
Tara
06:57
Okay.
Sarah
06:58
It's coming, and it's spewing bodily fluids. Cool.
Tara
07:04
The horror genre I would say runs on characters who are either way too curious or not curious enough and Ben is in the ladder camp. I get that he wants to respect his clients, but Mr. Nas's place is full of satanic imagery and Mr. Nas himself has devil horns. How much empathy can we be expected to have for this dummy, Sarah?
Sarah
07:24
N none. I was sort of compelled by the fact that this uh member of the Murphy Felchuk acting corps was last seen by me. in Monsters Geen season playing Anthony Perkins, that was a misguided sort of subplot or I don't even know, like side motif
Dave
07:46
You can't win them
Tara
07:46
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:47
all, Sarah.
Tara
07:48
Intertext, yeah.
Sarah
07:50
Yes, exactly.
Tara
07:51
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
07:51
That it's like either make your whole season about this and have it be three episodes or don't put people through this. I mean, this is the thing about this, about these franchisers and their franchises, that there's this balance between ew
Tara
08:08
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
08:09
and Huh. That when they get it right, it can be not magical, but it can be compelling, it can be thought-provoking, it can be moving at times, like American Crime Story, Season 2. I I always make that reference. I think as a load-bearing excuse to continue interacting with this product, it's about to crumble But I just and especially with American Horror Story, like this really felt like this was fan service deep Cuts of characters that, like Dan said, didn't seem to want to be there even in universe. And I am not well versed enough. in any season past John Carroll Clown Lynch, honestly, to find this entertaining or worthwhile. Like it it just feels like They had one idea. It was the number 13. And 13 minutes into it, I was like, what are we doing? It's the devil. Fucking light a fire under it, as it were.
Dave
09:16
When I saw we were doing this and I saw the press photos for this, and it was like here's Jessica Lang and here's that clown from the freak show season, I thought what they were doing was sort of a So you want to get back into the franchise r sort of reset or at least sort of like
Sarah
09:31
Mm-hmm
Dave
09:32
beginner friendly, but it's like the opposite of that. Like I know there's people from past seasons that I thought were like here, like miles apart, and now they're all together in the room, like they're some sort of found family, but they're also Satanists thing.
Tara
09:48
Uh-huh. That's what the plus is in LGBTclub.
Dave
09:52
It's sort of like Star Wars where like all the characters are eventually related, you know?
Tara
09:57
Mm-hmm.
Dave
09:58
So I was surprised to find that I actually was further away from the show after watching three episodes than I was more into it, at least from an understanding what the fuck is going on.
Tara
10:09
Yeah.
Dave
10:10
And basing your spookiness on numerology is uh that's a that's a big swing because that alone is sort of silly to me. And like not scary in the least. Like the whole thing they set up his
Sarah
10:24
You know that
Dave
10:26
his girlfriend at the start of the episode is really into the number thirty thirteen. And that's her lucky number. And they have to go to couples counseling because he's afraid of the number 13. That's the start of the the season. I'm like, oh boy, here we go.
Dan
10:43
I don't I mean it's it's it's very sweet that this guy who's uh triskaidekaphobic falls in love with this girl who's triskaidekaphilic and that's uh
Tara
10:50
Mm-hmm.
Dan
10:51
that that that truly is an American love story. Uh so
Sarah
10:55
Mm-hmm.
Dan
10:56
And and surely more compelling than John F. Kennedy Jr.
Dave
10:58
Yeah
Dan
10:59
and and Caroline. But anywho, uh
Sarah
11:01
Yeah.
Dan
11:02
the premise that starts it is already thin. At the end of three episodes, I don't know what the stakes are supposed to be. Like, what is it that you're supposed to get to the end of the third episode and be like, I'm really curious about Dot dot dot. Or I really hope, and this goes back to the empathy issue that there's absolutely nobody to care about even an iota. You know, I I hope this person survives. I hope this person gets sacrificed. I hope that this person's urethra gets clean. I oh like we're
Dave
11:34
That's the cleanest in the universe, by the way. It was clean three times in three episodes, I'm pretty sure.
Dan
11:37
so
Sarah
11:39
Oh
Dan
11:39
So
Sarah
11:40
God.
Dan
11:40
much time cleaning urethras.
Tara
11:42
Mm-hmm.
Dan
11:43
And and that's the thing. Like Dave started off by saying that this is a franchise that can be scary. I'm not sure I've ever found it scary. I've definitely found it disturbing
Dave
11:51
Yeah, okay.
Dan
11:51
though.
Dave
11:52
That's
Sarah
11:52
Yeah, mm-hmm
Dave
11:52
better description, you're right.
Dan
11:53
The early episode the early seasons, like you know, the John Carroll Lynch clown season, it taps into something that is absolutely It's it's primal, you know? Scary clowns are scary. Fine.
Tara
12:03
Yeah
Dan
12:03
Uh the asylum ser season, people being in an asylum, it's it's freaky, it's disturbing.
Sarah
12:06
Mm-hmm
Dan
12:09
Even the first season, uh the the Dylan McDermott masturbates in the corner season
Tara
12:13
Yeah.
Dan
12:14
Uh, you know, is
Tara
12:14
That's what it's called.
Dan
12:15
is this uh uh
Sarah
12:16
Uh-huh.
Dan
12:17
ghost house? Is that what it is?
Tara
12:18
Murder house, I think.
Dave
12:18
Murder House, yeah
Dan
12:19
Murder house, that's what it is. Okay. Uh, you know, there there were there was some primal stuff into it, but Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, I don't think Brad Falchuk's really involved anymore, but Ian Brennan surely is. The things that scare them they've run out of. Like they've run out of new things that disturb them.
Tara
12:39
Mm
Dan
12:40
And so they're just hitting repeat on things that disturb them already. In some cases those things weren't even disturbing. Like the Coven season is almost it's it's a camp fest and and it's amusing and funny because you have these overqualified actors doing these ridiculous things and it's amusing to watch, but there was nothing It it struck no chord with me. It was just like, okay, fun. Look, Kathy Bates is doing what she's doing. Jessica Lang is doing what she's doing. I I don't know what the chord of this is other than, as we've already said, oh look, it's season 13 Some people are scared of the number 13 and then dot dot dot
Dave
13:16
Yep,
Tara
13:16
Yeah.
Dan
13:16
dot dot dot
Sarah
13:17
Mm-hmm.
Dan
13:18
dot dot dot and then
Tara
13:19
Mm-hmm.
Dan
13:20
FX just put it on the air.
Dave
13:21
Yeah. The only person I had sympathy for in all three episodes and the characters on screen for a total of about six seconds max was when clown guy from Freak Show goes to the clown improv class and ends up throwing knives in people's foreheads. There's one clown furiously trying to make a balloon sword.
Tara
13:39
Thank you! I was wondering what his plan was for that
Dave
13:43
And I was like, oh, that's a funny piece of business.
Tara
13:43
too. That was
Dave
13:46
That was my takeaway
Sarah
13:46
Yeah.
Tara
13:46
that was good.
Dave
13:47
from the three episodes. That moment was fucking hilarious.
Tara
13:49
Yes, but everything with Mr. Nas is very like The Simpsons Haunted House where it's behold the ravages of age! That seems to be the only idea they have with this guy. Cause if even his nurse is like, he has devil horns, right? And like, no, he's just old. Okay, see you tomorrow. But I also don't know why they bothered to bring in John Waters for this, like I mean, it's more than a cameo. He's in multiple episodes. But then they didn't also book him to direct any episodes. That seems like a no-brainer of an event that you could like try and market, but they didn't
Dave
14:23
Hm, maybe he's busy.
Sarah
14:23
Mm-hmm
Dave
14:24
Too busy, tremendous mustache.
Tara
14:25
Perhaps. The other crossover I wanna see is to only mergers in the building because I need to see Oliver reacting to Mr. Nas
Sarah
14:33
Oh God, yes.
Dave
14:35
Synergy, let's make it happen.
Sarah
14:35
Into it.
Tara
14:37
Yeah, that's true.
Sarah
14:37
Mm-hmm.
Tara
14:38
They are both Disney projects.
Dan
14:39
And the truth is, I have thought that they've run out of things to do on Only Murders in the Building two or three seasons ago.
Tara
14:46
Sure.
Dan
14:46
But that it
Sarah
14:46
Oh, sure.
Dan
14:46
but what but what Tara just said is completely a season of uh Only Murders in the Building that I would watch. Is
Sarah
14:52
Mm-hmm.
Dan
14:52
is if is if if they all discovered that up on the thirteenth floor of the the not Astoria, whatever the hell it's called
Tara
14:58
A c Arconia
Sarah
14:59
Okay.
Dan
14:59
Arconia, yes. Uh that there was a nine an 86-year-old uh devil man whose urethra was constantly being cleaned.
Dave
15:06
Yeah.
Dan
15:06
I I would watch that like, come on, tell me Martin Short cleaning somebody's urethra would not provide so much business for that actor. I mean, it would be like Inner Space, only with even more urethral humor. Honestly, give me that.
Sarah
15:22
And
Dan
15:23
I would watch that.
Sarah
15:23
he could bust out that I'm possessed line reading again. It's been a while.
Dave
15:29
Speaking about crossovers like this that we would absolutely one hundred percent watch, there was an actual like real considered movie crossover between Jurassic Park and Fast and the Furious at one point that was like on the table at some point. And that the fact that that didn't get made is the saddest thing in the universe. And I feel like
Tara
15:47
Absolutely.
Dave
15:48
Dan's crossover here is also in that list. I would love to see it
Sarah
15:52
Mm-hmm.
Clip
15:57
Got a lot of shows. It's a great time for shows.
Dave
16:02
It's time to go around the dial talking about stuff we've been watching recently. First off, Tar.
Tara
16:07
I watched A Different World 2026 edition. I this is one I brought up in our fall TV preview as a show I should be into, but wasn't because I had concerns about it. My concerns were not unfounded. I'll first say, obviously, I know this is a college show. It is set in the current very fraught time, which the first episode directly addresses. Let's hear the clip.
Clip
16:29
This is a watershed moment where this country that we built. is trying to erase our black history, our games, our culture. They want to demoralize us. They wanna deport us, they wanna jail us, they wanna shoot us down in the streets. But you You all are their greatest threat. You future leaders who care about justice and community and each other.
Tara
17:01
So, not just acknowledging but portraying the political realities of Black Life in America was part of the original show. This continues through the episodes I've watched. From the new Hillman president having to make up a hundred million dollar budget shortfall due to his predecessor's financial mismanagement and also federal cuts. and several scenes set in a social movements class teaching bell hooks in detail. Those moments are bracing, important, and very effective, which is why I feel like an idiot saying I wanted it to sh be funnier, but I wanted it to be funnier. Recent-ish shows in this vein, like The Sex Lives of College Girls or Dear White People, I think manage the balance of real shit and humor better. It also took until episode three of this show to let us know anyone was queer. That's too long to wait. Also, also, one of the leads is a superstar quarterback. I don't care about that at all. I already watched Six more episodes of Chad Powers this year that no one then wanted me to write about, and I don't appreciate having football imposed upon me, but I am going to finish the season to see where it nets out. If that's at the Peacock's Bel-Air end of the spectrum, I probably won't return, but I'm hopeful that it will figure itself out and sort of relax a little bit. For my plug, again with again with this. That is, of course, the Patreon for our sister podcast. Again with this. We are going to be kicking off our Halloween mini-series next week with four very spooky. TV products and movies that we will be considering, including The Simpsons, The Strangers, East Quick, Supernatural. So get in the club so you can hear all of that again with this podcast. com slash club. Oh, and also This week is when our latest episode of Again With Them comes out. That is, of course, our monthly recap digest of Jenny Garth and Jenny Garth only 's podcast, 902-10MG. And that's gonna be real means. So if you want to hear that Again this podcast dot com slash club.
Dave
19:00
All right, Dan, what do you got first?
Dan
19:02
So, because of the time that this podcast is going to drop, I can't talk about Carrie and I can't talk about East of Eden, but you'll be able to see my reviews of those over on the Hollywood Reporter. But They made me kind of reflect on the number of TV shows this fall already that are about non-conforming women who become kind of horror icons. simply by virtue of attempting to be strong and attempting to make their way in the world. And so that is what both Eastie Beaton and Carrie are about. It's also what Monster Colin the Lizzie Borden series story whatever the hell it is is about uh that incidentally being a another Ryan Murphy production that I was able to make at the through two episodes of before I I checked out on. Um I I tried
Sarah
19:47
Yep.
Dan
19:48
this was the first time I hadn't reviewed a season of Monster and my Terrific colleague Angie Han reviewed it. She did a great job. You should read her review. So this was just me watching as a casual human being and I made it through two episodes But speaking of non-conforming women in a sort of cheerier vein, people should really be watching and talking about Netflix's adaptation of My Brilliant C career, which Netflix did not particularly promote in any way. Uh I begged to get screeners and was ignored entirely and then had to simply watch it on television. And it's Utterly charming. It is, of course, from the same source material as the Gillian Anderson, uh, not Gillian Anderson, Gillian Armstrong, though we might talk about Gillian Anderson later. movie from back in the late seventies, which of course had the great Judy Davis and Sam Neill in it, and it's it's not the movie. That's the first thing you have to get out of your mind. This is This is a TV show, it's it's poppy feminist television. If you like Buccaneers, if you like Dickinson, if you like Bridgerton, you will absolutely Like uh my brilliant career, the lead performances are great. Uh Philippa Northeast has a great name and she is the star and she is terrific. But for slow horses fans, if you felt as if this season hasn't been enough about Roddy being sexy, which was what last season was primarily about, it was like, oh my God, we just noticed that Christopher Chung has been doing crunches. Guess what? This is an entire series based around this because Christopher Chung plays a Australian-Chinese landowner. He plays the Sam Neil part, and and he is just so charming. The entire cast is delightful If you can get past the fact that it's not the movie, it is a really enjoyable six episodes of television, and I I got a kick out of it.
Tara
21:35
I liked it too. What would you like to plug?
Dan
21:38
Oh yes, plug. Um yes, so you can basically I'm the fine print, F-I-E-N, everywhere. So that would be blue sky primarily for social purposes. I have abandoned all other social media platforms. And over at the Hollywood Reporter, uh, yes, I have my blog, which is the fine print. Everything is over at the TV reviews page and occasionally the movie reviews page, and you can see subscribe to my regular newsletter, Now See This, which comes out every Friday and contains reviews of things that nobody really wanted me to write full reviews for. So For example, Tara just mentioned a little TV show called Chad Powers. I talked about uh season two of Chad Powers in my newsletter, and I haven't thought about it since.
Tara
22:19
Yep, that's about right.
Dan
22:21
So good times, yes, that's where you can find me.
Dave
22:24
Great, check the show notes for those links. All right, Sarah D. Bunting, hit us with what you've been watching recently.
Sarah
22:33
Speaking of stuff that Dan is reviewed. Um talking about American Hostage. This is the John Ham Starrer on MGM Plus, a streamer that exists. About the late 70s Indianapolis hostage crisis that saw Tony Kiritzis kidnap his mortgage liaison, Dick Hall, and demand that local radio eminence Fred Heckman hear him out live on air uh our esteemed guest can speak to this topic with more authority. I watched three and stopped down to write my review. We will link mine and his in the show notes, but it's Very MGM Plus. And by that I mean that in my theory, this streamer has a fuck it, let's put on a show attitude that lets it do things and execute on ideas that wouldn't quote go anywhere else on the figurative dial. But that same attitude means it's not as rigorous about capping runtimes, doing script passes for anachronistic dialogue, like a character using the phrase say more in a seventies period piece, etc. Dan is nodding. I feel I feel justified. So its greatest strength is of Of course, also its greatest weakness in that way that you have some A plus ideas and some C plus execution, and the best you ever net out at is like a strong B With that said, a strong B is not bad. That's what I would give American hostage. I think it's too long and too painstaking already, not even halfway through. and should have maybe picked one angle or character POV or Rashomoned it somehow episode to episode like one episode from Hackman's point of view, one from Hall's wife's point of view, one from Reporter Hairston's, and so on. But the production design is aces, the acting is very good, it gives you more than the script does. We talked about line of fire recently. Cat Cunning has more room to work here and they do. And there's some front fun pre-internet reportage process in the early going. It's eminently watchable. It just suffers from that MGM Plus C problem of like someone saying, you know, it would be cool, and then someone else being all, hell yeah, let's make it happen, and then not really leaning on the creators to make tough narrative decisions after that. Anyway, like I said, making the decision to read our reviews isn't that tough. I will be linking them in the show notes. And it's also not a tough decision to join the Extra Hot Great Club. But if you don't have the extra scratch, great news, some of your fellow listeners have sponsored year-long memberships via our mutual aid vault. Those memberships do expire eventually though, so if you've been on the fence about inquiring, hop off and email me bunting at tomato nation. com. Sinchi to Redeem, All Anonymous. I just realized I have a note on American Horror Story in the scene where the airplane starts to disintegrate and then the whole side of it comes up and people are getting sucked out.
Tara
25:37
Mm-hmm.
Dave
25:40
They should have had All thirteen get sucked out in order of what number was on their shirt.
Tara
25:45
Mm-hmm.
Dave
25:45
And you would see all thirteen of them.
Tara
25:47
Yep.
Dave
25:47
That was my note.
Tara
25:48
Yeah, I agree
Dave

Hello esteemed panel, I hope you're hungry because today we're discussing Hannibal Season 2 Episode 13 Mizumono first aired in Ugh 2014 Ugh. Mizumono is not a typical episode Hannibal. There's no case of the week, no ghastly murder tableaus, no guest cast. But it is the climax of the series. All of the events of the show have led here, and every remaining episode deals with the fallout of Mizumono's bloodshed, literal and emotional. Here, the truth of every character's identity is irrevocably exposed, and relationships and bones are irreversibly shattered Jack, Will, and Alana are all pretty much in alignment that Hannibal is in fact a murderous cannibal. We call this nom-nomative determinism. And plan to entrap him at one of his legendary dinner parties, using Jack as murder
Sarah

bait. But before we can get to that fireworks factory, which upends the entire show.

There's some table clearing and tying up of loose ends as everyone sniffs the faint smell of impending doom in the air and tries to set their affairs in order. So first we get Will chatting to Freddie Lowndes, the Craven tabloid journalist and frequent nemesis. The two have reached a twisted detente after collaborating on her false murder. as part of the plan to gain Hannibal's trust, and Will has a final request in clip one You can write about me. You can write about Hannibal. I leave Abigail alone. You really don't know if you're going to survive him, do you? Just let her rest in peace. Everselfless, Will asks her to forego her writing on Abigail Hobbes, the young woman from the pilot that was saved from her predatory father by Graham and Lecter. The two, in an act of dubious legality that's likely only possible on television, became co-guardians of the college-age Abigail, before she too was subsumed by Hannibal's machinations and seemingly murdered. Abigail's death has largely been the motivating drive for Will to capture Hannibal, despite their exceedingly close friendship. Next, Will meets with Hannibal in the darkest place in the world, his psychiatrist office. to burn a bunch of evidence and solidify the ruse that they'll be fleeing together after murdering Jack later that evening. But uh oh Hannibal takes a big ol' sniff a will Homst Among Us, etc. and with his magic Epicurean slash European nose powers, detects the lingering scent of Freddy Lounge and knows that Will is full of shit. Despite that, he still gives Will and out as they share a lamb dinner later, offering forgiveness from the deception if they just leave town together then and there. But Graham, still driven by the need to punish Lecter for Abigail's death, does not accept in clip two. Jack isn't offering forgiveness. He wants. Justice. He wants to see you. See you who you are. See what I've become. He wants the truth. To the truth for them. honest consequences. Guys, you don't need to whisper. You're alone in Hannibal's dining room. But here we are, and the die has been cast. Finally, Cynthia Nixon pops in as serious FBI lady, and literally makes Jack Crawford turn in his badge and gun before chiding him for his extra legal entrapment of Lecter. He and Graham have operated so far outside of the law that she's arresting Will ASAP. And let's be honest, she's not wrong. Will and Jack are pretty much out of their minds and their plan is terrible. But this is all to say that they've gotta get to Hannibal 's stat before everyone but Hannibal is arrested. So here we go, baby, the main event, one of the most shocking, captivating, and devastating 20 minutes of television ever broadcast. Jack arrives first at Lector's, and we finally get the gnarly fight scene Laurence Fishburne had been literally begging for for seasons. There's knife throwing, counter-mantling, stabbing, choking, all the stars are here. Including Alana walking up to the front door, always butting in where she's not wanted. Girl, nobody invited you. With Jack bleeding out in the pantry after a terrible neck stabbing. Alana confronts Hannibal, his mask fully off, and it is terrifying in click three. Be blind, Alana. Don't be brave. It's okay. Lady, never trust a man around your handgun. Alana flees upstairs and is probably shoved out of a window by the very much not dead Abigail Hobbs. and a moment that's been burned into my brain for over a decade. Alana sailing out into the darkness, aghast shock burned onto her face, aka surprised Pikachu meme, glass dancing around her in slow motion, cut to commercial. Will pulls up, briefly checks on the bleeding and convulsing Alana on the front doorstep, and kinda hilariously disregards her to run inside after Jack and Hannibal. He enters the kitchen and is understandably shocked and devastated to find Abigail alive under the same murderous thrall that entrapped her with her father for her entire childhood. So the final clip is the emotional peak of the show, and it's going to be a little long. Just know that the squelching is Hannibal coming in behind Will before tenderly and comprehensively gunning him with a linoleum knife in clip four. See me. I give you a rare gift. But you didn't want it. Didn't I? Sure, well, you gained Hannibal's confidence and heart But your betrayal has led to tenfold retaliation as Hannibal proceeds to slice open Abigail's throat, just as her biological father attempted to in the first episode of the series. He then walks out into the rain, we get our state-mandated baptismal imagery, and the season closes with almost every prominent character blood-soaked and dying. It cannot be overstated how incredible Mads Mikkelsen is in these final minutes. His portrayal of Lecter has always been a placid, unflinching facade, but we finally see Flits of true emotion dance across his face rage, heartbreak, shame, that he dared to allow somebody to know the real him, that he dared to be vulnerable, is Hannibal's murder of Abigail to punish Will, to punish himself, to ensure a finality that the fantasy of a shared life together is utterly shattered, and via some inexplicable magic trick, maybe the alchemy of the show's craft and Maz's performance This lets the audience feel the same devastation as Lector, all of his hope and longing for a family lies dying on his kitchen floor. even when giving viewers bonkers visuals that could be too uh heavy-handed at times, you know, like when the rain turns to blood because it's a bloodbath But I do argue that Mizumono is canon-worthy, for its astounding and wildly audacious final act, for its shocking and heartbreaking encounters that the show had been building towards since day one, and for the performance of Mad Mikkelsen. So thanks for your time, probably too much of it, and while you deliberate, I'll just be chilling in first class with some mimosas and Jillian Anderson. Thank you!
Tara
34:33
Thank you, Seth. Dan, you chose this from our list of submissions. Please start us off. What did you think of the episode and of Seth's argument?
Dan
34:41
I I thought that this was a good complement to American Horror Story thirteen in the sense that
Tara
34:49
It was good.
Dan
34:50
This is but i it in that sense, yes. In the in the sense that going back to when things are scary, when things are disturbing, whatever, this episode pretty much puts the knife in you five seconds in and twists it for forty minutes. It is it is a viscerally uncomfortable experience watching it throughout, and as such it it summarizes the experience of of uh of watching Hannibal throughout. And and look, I haven't checked out the I haven't watched this episode since it first aired. And uh I haven't had the chance to go back and revisit Hannibal. Hannibal's a show I loved and but once again, impossible to watch it and not think, my god, how the hell did this air on broadcast television?
Sarah
35:32
I
Dan
35:32
How did this air on broadcast television for three years?
Sarah
35:33
seriously
Dan
35:36
But I'll even go further. How did this air on television? Like I can't imagine anybody making this show at this point.
Tara
35:44
Mm-hmm.
Dan
35:44
And and yeah, and and Seth did a very good job of uh of of summarizing and and describing the both the things that are kind of giggle-inducing But they're intentionally giggle inducing because you need those releases, those brief moments where you're like, okay, sure. The One reflection of the knife, great. Two reflections of the knife. Maybe you've gone a little bit overboard, but
Tara
36:09
Mm-hmm.
Dan
36:09
but do it. Do it again. Hell, let's go for three. Let's go for five. You know, like I would watch them do the silly things that they did on this show a million times because just the audacity is is so wildly outside of the norm and and God bless this show for existing
Tara
36:26
Thank you, Dan, Sarah.
Sarah
36:28
I had my doubts about this episode as a Canon prospect just because I feel like this show was such an outlier as a show, but also had like almost no outliers episode-wise, that it was all kind of of a piece and that I don't know if you can sort of get the band back together and sort of return in time to when this was groundbreaking and baffling that it even existed at all. I covered it in detail for previously. tv um many, many screenshots just talking about um symbology and just like uh visuals reflecting emotion and I was Struck again by how just confident it is and content to be too much at times, like Dan was saying, like, let's have you know, let's have a whole wall of knives and everyone's reflected in it, like, sure. It was a beautiful but also terrifying Capital R romantic Sublime show to watch. I think it also got at something about the overlap between grief and the horror genre and how much that factors into that and the madness of grief and and all of that all of that stuff. And that fight is legendary. I still don't totally know if you can really pull a single episode out of line. Like the the series premiere is in the canon already. This is an obvious bookend to it, as Seth mentioned. I think I am gonna vote for it because it does I mean, this is in some ways very typical of Hannibal sort of emotionally, but also in terms of its confidence and its utter blood-soaked unicorniness that That there was nothing like it and that there will be nothing like it. This would not get made anymore, uh, Dan is right What an interesting prospect. Like what an interesting question to weigh. And it was a pleasure to return to Mikkelsen's just peerless performance and when the mask is off in this episode you really see how much he had been doing all along, and then how much he's able to do once the once the mask has dropped. So yeah, lots to think about.
Tara
38:58
I'll go next. We watched this, first of all, eating cold leftover pizza from the previous night, as it is intended to be watched, I'm sure.
Sarah
39:06
Yep.
Tara
39:07
We also watched it before American Horror Story and you know, Dance already said like this is a good contrast to that, but it like American Horror Story season thirteen would have looked bad under under any circumstances, but compared to this, especially so because This does such a better job of building that dread from the first moments. I I I hear what you're saying, Sarah, about pulling this out from the hole. But I feel like this is so
Sarah
39:31
Uh huh.
Tara
39:33
it's so propulsive that even without remembering the plot that led up to this, because like Dan, I haven't watched it since it aired either.
Sarah
39:42
Yeah, no, I haven't either.
Tara
39:43
It's extremely effective and you you cannot look away. You have to see how this is gonna come to an end. It's just so gripping And so dreadful. Like it's so terrifying and so bloody. I mean, the only I I agree with you, this probably this certainly couldn't have gotten made on NBC now, but like Uh the vampire listat I think gets close to this in terms of like
Sarah
40:06
Oh yeah, true.
Tara
40:07
both it's
Sarah
40:07
Actually, MGM Plus might have tried it, honestly.
Dave
40:11
I mean, I think if you can put the boys on a streaming Service you can probably put
Sarah
40:15
True
Dave
40:16
I mean it is, but I'm saying it like new Hannibal, yeah.
Tara
40:17
Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dan
40:19
For for me it's it's the w it's the weight of it.
Dave
40:22
Mm-hmm.
Dan
40:23
Much more than the blood or uh you know, I I think Seth made a reference to how everyone was whispering and everyone's talking also very, very slowly. I feel like there's probably about three pages of dialogue in the out of the 40-page script
Dave
40:34
Yeah.
Tara
40:35
Yeah.
Dan
40:36
Like, I think you would basically it requires exactly what it required in terms of Brian Fuller getting it on NBC. Is is somebody s being willing to give carte blanche to an auteur and simply looking away. So like I guess I can I can imagine an FX still doing this, uh, but it's still it is amazing the way it has not become the norm.
Dave
40:58
Yeah.
Dan
40:58
There you cannot watch this show and go, yeah, television's caught up to this. No, it it it has television has not caught up to Hannibal. It's its own thing.
Tara
41:08
Yeah.
Dan
41:08
Nothing is like it.
Tara
41:09
No, it's true.
Sarah
41:10
Mm-hmm.
Tara
41:10
And and Seth saying it aired in twenty fourteen even makes it crazier that it happened at all, especially then.
Sarah
41:14
Yeah. What
Tara
41:17
It's remarkable, it's exciting, it's terrifying, it feels like the end. This feels like it could have been a fine place to stop and sort of leave You know, leave Hannibal 's fate in question, much as the end of Silence of the Lambs does, before they kinda ruin it by making a sequel.
Sarah
41:34
Mm-hmm.
Tara
41:36
So I appreciate this pitch. I thought it was really well done and I appreciate revisiting the show, although I don't think it's gonna make me want to watch it again because once is enough. Dave.
Dave
41:46
I just want to give it up for our nom nominative determinism.
Tara
41:48
That was pretty good.
Sarah
41:49
Oh my God.
Dave
41:50
That was really great.
Dan
41:51
Kudos, kudos
Sarah
41:52
Perfect.
Dave
41:52
And speaking about that, you what
Sarah
41:53
Get out.
Dave
41:54
you think Hannibal the Cannibal knows Davy who's still in the Navy from Piano Band? Think they're friends?
Tara
41:59
For sure
Dave
42:00
My problem at the start of watching this, having kind of forgotten everything about this show and the particulars of this episode, I had a vague idea about the fight coming. was that the first ten minutes are almost all artifice. Like it's just ending the cold open with With the you know the two separate scenes and then they merge together in a split screen, like two halves of two different heads coming together and saying the last line together.
Tara
42:24
Yeah
Sarah
42:25
Uh
Dave
42:27
Mm my eyes got stuck inside of my head for about two minutes after that.
Sarah
42:30
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
42:32
But I love, Dan, I love your take that some of those production excesses, some of that artifice, is actually a way to release some tension
Sarah
42:44
Mm-hmm.
Dave
42:44
without sort of getting goofy You know, whereas a horror movie will do a jump scare or something like that
Sarah
42:47
Yeah, I think that's a good point too.
Dave
42:51
or you know, a fake out of some sort that's kind of funny. This one is sort of keeping it. on an even dramatic keel, even though the way they're telling some of the stuff is like so over the top and s sometimes really silly, like the bloodbath stuff and things like that.
Tara
43:06
Yeah.
Dave
43:07
And Uh I thought that worked. Couldn't really put my my my finger on exactly what that was, but Dan, I think you're you're spot on there. Uh and then You get to the kitchen fight and you're like, oh shit, right this thing. It is so just visceral and crunchy and sloppy and it's just like one of those fights. The difference between fighting and fighting for your life is very apparent here in this scene.
Tara
43:33
Yeah
Sarah
43:33
Mm-hmm.
Dave
43:34
And I thought that was really heavy. Ten minutes in, I was like, really? And then by the end of it, I was like, oh yeah, right. Absolutely. So this is gonna be a yes for me. So let's make this official. Dan, what do you think about this one for the canon? Canon worthy or not?
Dan
43:50
I would say yes.
Dave
43:51
Sarah.
Sarah
43:52
I agree, yes.
Dave
43:53
And Tar.
Tara
43:54
Yes
Dave
43:54
Alright, it's a sweeps, so I'm saying yes to. So Hannibal Season 2 Episode 13 Mizumono. You are hereby inducted into the extra hot gray cannon
Clip
44:16
Americans love a winner. Yeah. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
44:22
It's time to discover our winner and loser of the week. Tara has this week's winna.
Tara
44:27
Yeah, this is one of those winners that's kind of a loser also. It is Mary Poppins, which is getting a TV series adaptation that we are told will lean into more complex elements of the novels it's based on. No thanks! I don't want to see how she got to be where she was. This sounds really dumb. It's ri very shades of the Stephen Knight Scrooge miniseries.
Dave
44:52
Oh my god, I was gonna bring that up.
Tara
44:54
That was all about Scrooge being a
Dave
44:56
Abused.
Tara
44:57
Childhood abuse survivor, like it w
Dave
44:58
Yeah.
Tara
44:59
just let people do things that are cool. We don't need to know how they got there. And honestly, don't tell us.
Dave
45:04
Yeah.
Tara
45:06
It's not interesting usually.
Dave
45:07
All right. Sarah, loser of the week, please.
Sarah
45:10
That is Brandy Glanville, who suffered a perforated eardrum and quote, crooked boob. On season five of Special Forces, Colonel World's toughest test of all the cast members to have something bad befall them. I can think of others I would rather have seen Boob crooked.
Tara
45:30
Sure.
Sarah
45:31
I don't know.
Tara
45:31
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
45:32
She's having a rough one. We hope she feels better soon, I guess.
Tara
45:35
How long is Fox gonna be allowed to keep perpetrating these attacks? on C list and lower stars of this show because
Sarah
45:44
I mean, the biggest loser was on for like fifteen years, so a while, probably
Tara
45:49
Yeah, probably
Dave
45:51
Well, speaking about continuing these attacks, do you know what time it is?
Tara
45:53
Oh, not not speaking of the biggest loser.
Sarah
45:56
Or it's been on for a while.
Dave
46:00
Well
Tara
46:00
Yes, it's game time
Dave
46:01

With an iconic alien arrival scene making it a striking piece of UFO theme decor. What show is that Lego set for?
Dan
49:14
I assume it's the X Files.
Dave
49:16
You assume correctly. Now, Dan, this is a 1478-piece set. What is the US retail price
Dan
49:26
Okay, so let's see, we got 1700 pieces, 220. I can't do math, so I don't know what actually that works out to proportionally. Um 150.
Dave
49:38
Two hundred even for the X Files set, yes.
Tara
49:40
Whoa
Dan
49:41
I g
Sarah

Mm.
Dan
49:42
I bet you
Sarah
49:42
Okay
Dan
49:42
I bet you if I'd actually been able to do the math, I would have come much closer.
Dave
49:45
Yeah
Dan
49:46
And yet I and and I and I put the equation out there and then ran screaming from it.
Dave
49:51
I
Dan

So
Dave
49:51
I will
Dan

tell you, they don't necessarily follow a pre brick price.
Tara
49:57
Okay.
Sarah
49:58
Mm-hmm.
Dan
49:58
But that is the only way that is the only way that I can figure out how to approach it, so.
Dave
50:01
I know. I'm saying that's good for a first overall idea of how much it costs, but then you have to like licensing and stuff like that.
Tara
50:08
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dave
50:09
Some of it seems like way too high for how many pieces you get.
Tara
50:12
Sure.
Dave
50:12
Alright, that's my piece of advice.
Tara
50:13
Okay, yep.
Dave
50:14
Tara, dogs, this is a quote. Dogs' lives don't have to have meaning. End quote. Inspire memories of witty blank sayings and bring classic comic scenes to life with Lego ideas, blanks, blank house. This model building kit for adults features a plausible blank figure, which comes with two alternate leg builds for sitting and standing, and two neck positions for lying down and standing. Dave
50:44
for you. Peanuts is correct, yes.
Tara

Dave
50:47
Charlie Brown stuff. Alright. How much will this cost? This is a 964-piece set.

Back to Sarah.

I just
Dave
55:28
oh I want to give you one more hint. They often refer to their sets as worthy of your home office and decor. That doesn't speak to the show in this instance. So get office out of your brain if that's

Dave

Mm-hmm.
Dan
57:07
I feel like I well it's it's Star Trek, but I feel like I I lost the the number of blanks in the title.
Dave
57:12
Yeah.
Dan
57:14
Uh the the next generation, I guess, is just what I but I don't remember if that was the right number of blanks.
Dave
57:19
You've got Star Trek, that is good. We just wanted the franchise in this case.
Dan
57:22
Oh, okay.
Dave
57:23
I think this is
Dan
57:23
Excellent.
Dave
57:24
original series because the blank blank blank blank blank blank is Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC 1701.
Dan
57:30
Oh. Oh, okay.
Dave
57:32
No
Sarah
57:32
Okay.
Dave
57:32
letter.
Dan
57:32
I just I just assumed that was sort of uh d Star Trek Cole in Different Worlds
Tara
57:36
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Dave
57:36
Yeah.
Dan
57:36
avoid yeah, okay.

58:37
now here's the thing, Dave.
Tara
58:37
Okay
Sarah
58:37
my God.
Dan
58:38
I think it's really actually far closer to a price that's on a per block basis than you were initially implying. Because I I feel as if As as if proportionally speaking, some of these are getting to be justifiable, maybe.
Tara
58:49
I think there's like been the seventeen hundred ones that are
Dave
58:53
Okay.
Tara
58:53
I mean whatever you said
Dave
58:54
Yeah.
Tara
58:54
that are lower.
Dave
58:55
Mm-hmm. But you have to get within $5.
Tara
58:57
Yeah
Dave
58:57
So I think there's enough variance in here that it's gonna mess with
Tara
58:58
yeah
Dave
59:00
you. We're gonna have some $8 pings, yeah.
Tara
59:02
Yes.
Dan
59:02
Also, requiring anyone to do math
Tara
59:04
I was gonna say, no one's whipping out their calculators
Dave
59:04
Yes.
Dan
