They really didn't wonder. They knew it was terribly true. They knew that the sour sweet wind was coming back. And what the sour sweet wind would do.
Dave
00:19
This is the Extra Extra Hot Great Podcast, episode 432 for the October 3rd, 2026 weekend. I am Wonderful Knight for Eyebrows, David T. Cole, and I'm here with Sour Sweet Wind, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:39
Thanks, Dave's Veggie Chili.
Dave
00:41
Hey and Hooville Blacksmith Tara Ariano
Tara
00:44
There's no horses in this town. My family is dying. Welcome to Extra, Extra Hot Great, the podcast we make just for you. Dear club members, we're so glad you're here, especially as the month turns over. We know you are the best of us, the ones that keep your finances in order and make sure you do not miss a single episode of this podcast. Thank you.
Dave
01:14
But seriously, thank you. I just wanted to bring up that we made more money off t shirt sales last month than we did off the advertising, and our t
Sarah
01:23
Wow.
Dave
01:24
shirt sales were less than forty dollars.
Tara
01:27
So
Sarah
01:27
Okay.
Tara
01:28
when we tell you that we make a negligible amount of money on ads, we're not kidding.
Sarah
01:28
Well
Tara
01:33
Anyway We're here to talk about Halloween is Grinch Night for the October Forcening from Dave in Seattle. We'll come back to him in a moment. Here's what that is. special is about. All the Who's know what it means when a sour, sweet wind blows through Hooville. It's Grinch Night, when the Grinch, now voiced by Hans Hanreed, comes down from Mount Crumpet for the Grinch Night Ball. while all the other Who's brace themselves for whatever may come, one young Who named Eukaria, Gary Shapiro, dares to try to detain the Grinch and save the town, at least for now. This special, which was written by Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss himself, originally aired on ABC October 28th, 1977. Dave in Seattle, who submitted this to The Forcening Pool, writes, It's a semi-canonical sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, loosely branded around Halloween, I'll say. It's annual October viewing in my household Let's do the chen check-in, Sarah. Should our listeners watch Halloween is Grinch Night?
Sarah
02:36
I don't think so.
Tara
02:38
Dave. I agree
Dave
02:42
Do you want a blur too?
Tara
02:44
Sure. It was so dull. I feel like I I can't believe that Dave in Seattle is saying they watch it every year, like, watch what? I I feel like even as a kid I would have been bored by this.
Sarah
02:55
Yeah
Dave
02:57
I was at the end of the special and I was like, what
Tara
02:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
03:00
is the lesson? What is the throughput here?
Tara
03:03
Yeah
Dave
03:03
And the best I could come up with is that it's a story about the ecosystem of terror by Dr. Seuss. Not Ted's best work.
Tara
03:11
Sure, sure.
Dave
03:12
Because like the whole story boils down to the Grinch gets grumpy
Tara
03:16
Mm-hmm
Dave
03:17
because the sour wind makes the fluffer nuffers
Tara
03:20
Yeah.
Dave
03:21
angry
Tara
03:21
Whatever.
Sarah
03:22
Yeah
Dave
03:22
up the pond and the pond angries up and the brontosauri
Tara
03:23
Uh-huh.
Dave
03:25
are laying it up. Anyways, the ecosystem is the reason why the Grinch is grumpy all the time.
Tara
03:31
Yeah.
Dave
03:31
It was weird.
Sarah
03:32
It's like the Santa Ana subplot that would periodically come up on Beverly Hills Nine Two One O, like
Tara
03:38
Yeah
Sarah
03:39
This is not story. I mean, one of my notes was like, first of all, I thought the Grinch and Los Who had reached semi-permanent détente, canonically
Tara
03:49
Right, yes.
Sarah
03:51
And even if you set that aside, there's not twenty-five minutes of plot here.
Tara
03:55
No, no, no.
Sarah
03:55
There's not two point five minutes of plot
Tara
03:58
Right.
Sarah
03:58
here.
Tara
03:58
But yes, it's the same problem as we had with or maybe just me, as I had with the L prequel show and we talked about that a couple months ago where it's like if the lessons of the source material were learned What are we doing back here? Like if this is supposed to be before the Grinch stole Christmas, then I don't know why the Who's weren't more prepared for him to steal Christmas, cause they have a whole early warning
Sarah
04:22
Mm-hmm.
Tara
04:24
signal.
Dave
04:25
I feel like in this world and this special, the Grinch is the Who's Krampus.
Tara
04:30
Yeah.
Dave
04:30
And if this is a prequel, I suppose that makes sense, although I would think the Who's would be more terrified
Tara
04:34
Mm-hmm.
Dave
04:38
and more on the ball when it comes to tracking when the Grinch is gonna come and do whatever he does.
Tara
04:43
Right.
Dave
04:44
Skin people alive and eat their bones.
Tara
04:45
R Well, that's the thing, because I I'm not even clearer on I wouldn't have
Dave
04:49
What happens?
Tara
04:50
Right, I wouldn't have known about the Grinch Night Ball or whatever if I hadn't read it on Wikipedia, because I'll be honest, I was taking notes, but my mind frequently wandered
Dave
04:55
Yeah.
Sarah
05:00
Yeah.
Dave
05:00
What is the play here? Does he come in and like dance? Is like does he get into a groove? Is there like a disco tech thing happening?
Tara
05:07
Right.
Dave
05:07
What is the terror part of the Grinch night here?
Tara
05:09
Mm-hmm
Dave
05:10
Is unresolved.
Tara
05:11
He has this big caravan or whatever that he's riding down to the town. Like, does he have each who individually enter it? Like we see Yukaraya do? Like I don't get what his end game is And if this is supposed to be what is continued to happen after his heart grew three sizes that day and then I guess shrank back down, like
Dave
05:32
Yeah, well, it's sort of like when Luke Skywalker and everybody's efforts in the Star Wars trilogy are for naught because it's just like well the Empire's back guys.
Tara
05:41
Yeah
Dave
05:42
It just feels like that. It's like why did we bother?
Tara
05:44
,
Dave
05:44
Thanks for sacrificing everything Darth Vader, but guess what? We're back to Squarewood.
Tara
05:48
Right.
Sarah
05:49
I could have strayed off
Tara
05:49
Yes.
Sarah
05:50
target. What was this for?
Dave
05:51
Yeah. I didn't have to be at work that day at all.
Tara
05:56
Yeah, what you really want if this is the sequel is the ending to be like the SNL, it's a wonderful life sketch from the 80s where it was like the original lost ending where everyone kills it.
Dave
06:06
Or
Tara
06:06
That's what I want.
Dave
06:07
go the Star Wars route where it's just the Grinch
Tara
06:08
Mm-hmm.
Dave
06:09
again, except he's bigger.
Tara
06:10
Yeah, sure.
Dave
06:11
Yeah
Sarah
06:11
Mm-hmm.
Tara
06:11
One of my earliest memories of I would say discernment as a TV watching child is when I would watch Looney Tunes and you would see the director and like m that didn't mean anything to me as a kid until I learned who Chuck Jones and Frizz Freeling were
Dave
06:26
Yeah.
Sarah
06:27
Mm-hmm.
Tara
06:27
And knew that a Chuck Jones one would be good and a Friz Freelang one would be dumb and look shitty. And that is borne out here because Chuck Jones animated the original, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Friz Freeling is behind this one And it looks like crap.
Dave
06:42
It is really rough Although I did not mind the weirder parts of the dream sequences or whether they're supposed to be the terror sequences. I don't know what exactly we were meant to
Tara
06:53
Yeah.
Dave
06:54
think those were some are in the credits and then one of the who 's basically goes on a Halloween junk trip for about ninety seconds.
Tara
07:00
Yes, it's
Dave
07:01
That was okay. But yeah the rest of it seemed like really like, oh, it feels like we needed another pass at this and Very um scratchy
Tara
07:10
Yes, I agree
Sarah
07:11
Yeah.
Tara
07:12
The emotional evolution of Max the Dog is part of this story. He looks suicidal even before we get to this song. Let's hear clip one.
Clip
07:22
How many times have I said and said, How many times have I said in my head, what am I doing? Why am I the slave of this cringy old crock? And I say how I wish I could turn back the clock and have the fine future I had once before. And again be an innocent puppy once more. In your puppy house, baby, with sweet auntie Woofy Wolfoon, feeding you hominy grits with a big silver spoon. What am I? I do in here doesn't matter much how, but my dear old Auntie Woofie, wouldn't I fear? Very much care for me now.
Sarah
08:23
That's Henry Gibson, I believe, of um
Tara
08:24
Yes, it is
Sarah
08:25
Rona Martin et al. This is just a very, I don't even know how to put it, but it's like this is for children
Dave
08:34
Yeah.
Tara
08:34
Yeah.
Sarah
08:35
But they just assume children are extremely stupid and impervious to the messaging of or mood of a song.
Dave
08:44
Or
Tara
08:44
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:45
we all have to learn about Reek from Game of Thrones at some point and might as well be Max the Dog as Reek.
Tara
08:53
Yeah.
Sarah
08:53
This is the kind of thing that my parents would have let me watch at the time because it was Four kids and from a you know storied franchise and it's the kind of thing that I would have watched but not enjoyed Because I barely got to watch anything, but this kind of like late 70s, it's like the more modern Tom and Jerry's, too.
Tara
09:15
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
09:16
There's just that like
Tara
09:16
Yes.
Sarah
09:17
frisson of drugs in it that like when you're little you can't really put a name on why it's not comfortable, but there's just something not for kids about it. and not enjoyable and the trippiness of it I wouldn't have enjoyed, but it was TV, so I would have gutted it out. Had that same feeling watching it now.
Dave
09:38
Back to Max for a sec. He's pulling the paraphernalia wagon, which I was like, alright, speaking about drugs.
Sarah
09:44
Mm-hmm.
Dave
09:44
But there is a point where the woo kid, the boy, what's his name again?
Tara
09:48
Mm-hmm. Euchariah, who
Dave
09:50
Yukaraya.
Tara
09:51
he's a who, not a woo.
Dave
09:53
Woohoo. Woo-hoo. And he sort of befriends him. He's like, Oh, I'm gonna take you home, you poor dog, because like you just seem to be abandoned Tied to this wagon at a certain point. And then there's some stuff that happens. The kid goes on his drug trip, the cringes, challenges, blah blah blah. All this stuff happens. And then there's a point where he realizes that the dog is the Grinch's dog and the dog is whimpering and the kid's just like, see if
Tara
10:19
Yeah, good luck.
Dave
10:20
good luck and he fucks off
Sarah
10:21
Yeah
Dave
10:22
before the dog runs after him for some reason after that betrayal.
Tara
10:26
Mm-hmm.
Dave
10:26
So this dog just has it so bad. I felt I felt genuinely bad for Max here. Like not like
Tara
10:31
Yes.
Dave
10:32
boo-hoo, I'm sympathizing with the character, but like you fucking monsters who wrote this.
Tara
10:36
Yes
Dave
10:36
What is wrong with you?
Tara
10:37
Yeah, even before anything starts happening, we see him in the Grinch's cave, and he already looks like a dog who's about to die.
Sarah
10:38
Yeah.
Tara
10:46
Like by his own paw or otherwise.
Dave
10:48
Or just missing like the rib bones
Tara
10:50
Yes.
Dave
10:51
on his side to make it like a complete, you know, Sarah McLaughlin situation.
Sarah
10:56
They were suggested that he did not look well fed.
Tara
10:56
Oh God Mm-hmm.
Dave
10:59
Yeah
Tara
11:00
And if the Grinch can hear or read his thoughts, because we hear him responding in the song that in the clip we just heard, why didn't that come up in the Christmas show? If they have like telepathy.
Dave
11:09
I don't know.
Tara
11:10
Anyway, other than the general sense of dread, the special is almost over before anything Halloween -y happens, I would say.
Dave
11:17
Yeah.
Tara
11:19
And when it does, clip two.
Clip
11:21
Wil wil will you please scare me some more, sir? I I I sort of like it
Tara
11:27
Oh, I hate that.
Dave
11:28
Oh the Who's are into some stuff.
Tara
11:32
Well, uh BDSM art I will say is top of mind because we're about to record an episode of our sister podcast again with again with this about secretary, but this feels like fifty shades of Grinch to me.
Dave
11:42
Yeah
Sarah
11:43
Yeah.
Tara
11:43
I don't like it
Sarah
11:44
No.
Dave
11:45
Yeah, they grow up fast in Hooville.
Sarah
11:49
Yikes
Tara
11:51
Anyway, that's Halloween is Grinch night.
Dave
11:53
Oh, we're not done yet.
Tara
11:54
Oh, we're not?
Dave
11:54
Hang on a second. Yeah, I got just got a couple clips I need to play.
Tara
11:55
Okay. Oh, okay, great
Dave
11:57
Uh one is between Zachariah's parents speaking about fetishes.
Clip
12:05
And he whispered to his wife, Mariah, will you also take a whiff?
Dave
12:12
Uh look forward to this on the soundboard in the future.
Clip
12:15
Their troubles will now commence.
Dave
12:19
And
Tara
12:19
Okay.
Dave
12:19
I set it up top, but just to prove that I wasn't making it up.
Clip
12:23
Mm, it's a wonderful night for eyebrows.
Dave
12:28
I don't know when the next Peter Gallagher TV show is gonna come up, but when it does, you can look forward to hearing that clip again.
Sarah
12:33
mm
Tara
12:34
Fantastic. All right, so it wasn't a total loss
Dave
12:44
Alright, strap in. It's time for everybody's favorite question and answer segment is Ask EHG
Tara
13:06
Nice
Dave
13:11
Alright. It is Ask EHG, which means first we must deal with last week's Ask Ask EHG.let's spin the wheel of judgment.
Clip
13:20
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Dave
13:22
Well, that wheels need some oil. It's Sarah.
Sarah
13:25
Oh my god, I'm gonna break that wheel. I don't like that soundtrap at all.
Dave
13:29
But guys, I'm on so many painkillers and pills right now. I I'm surprised I've managed to hit the keyboard, frankly.
Sarah
13:36
This week's Ask Ask AHGquestion came from Jovial Gent, who posed the following query what TVclergy person would you want to go out on the town with Dave I believe you have an answer for this one
Dave
13:50
Yeah, I put it in the chat when it first came up on Discord, but my vote is for Imhotep from Look Around You. He charted number five on the uh whatever the charts are in Britain. And he was a scribe, which is the priest class in ancient Egypt, so he he qualifies. So knight on the town with Imhotep.
Sarah
14:06
Why not? What could go wrong?
Dave
14:08
Also he's invisible.
Sarah
14:09
Hmm. My answer was Father Dan Hastings, played by Neil Huff. From Mayor of East Town. That's the guy who's always at the kitchen table drinking Manhattan's and playing cards with Gene Smart's Helen. We wouldn't exactly be ripping it up. We'd be at some local watching some sport and snarking on the other patrons, probably, but that's the dream, frankly, in my opinion. Lots of interesting listener answers here that tended towards the I think this person would actually like to stay home and do crafts, which is why I want to not go out on the not town with them, but that's okay.
Dave
14:42
Right.
Sarah
14:43
Make it your own. Malexic said, I'm going with the Mother Superior from Mrs. Davis. I don't want to get dragged into Sister Simone's adventure nonsense because that seems like way too much work. that hanging at the convent and making jam would be right up my alley. LTsaid, I'm going out with David from Evil. Why? Because my culture is hot, she could've stopped there, she didn't. While I don't believe in ghosts or Satan, an evening of solving supernatural mysteries is more fun than just drinking in a bar. Sister Knight was not alone in saying, Hot priest from Fleabag if out on the town means to my bed. But the winner of the stickers this week is Lucely Lawless. Father Bra from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, if Josh, White, Josh, and Hector tag along, I think it would be an amusing time at the Little League sports bar with a high likelihood of someone breaking out in song. Uh you can't beat that for a Friday night, in my opinion. Loosely lawless. Please contact Dave on Discord for your sticker pricing.
Dave
15:45
Thank you. Let's get to your questions for us this week. First one comes from Tara Ariano. Tara, do you want to ask this?
Tara
15:51
Sure, I do. A Seinfeld sequel reveals that one of the core four characters was a serial killer all along. Which one and why did you pick them? Because I think a credible case could be made for any one of them. I feel I I'm on here to go first, but I think Sarah should go first as our true crime expert.
Sarah
16:09
Okay, I went with Kramer, not because he's a weirdo, although that's not not part of it, but because If I recall correctly, we are always discovering weird skills and gossamer contacts that Kramer has way outside of the core group's predictable circles. So his having a completely other existence as like the West Side Strangler would track for him. That and the idea that he started killing accidentally slash because he flailed too forcefully near someone. And then it just went from there is like I feel very creamer coated. But it's also kind of that the others don't seem like as good of candidates comparatively. I feel like Elaine is insufficiently covert. Jerry is too fastidious to fuck with body disposal. George has the right attitude for lack of a better term, but would find murder such an annoying pain in the ass logistically that he wouldn't get past one before giving up on the project. And that leaves us with Kramer, but I'm very interested to hear other people's theories.
Tara
17:14
I forgot until you started talking about Kramer that canonically there is an episode, the trip, the one where George and Jerry go to LA, where he gets arrested as a serial killer known as the Smog Strangler, which he's not, but there is suspicion of him doing that.
Sarah
17:28
Wow. Yeah.
Tara
17:30
My answer actually is Jerry
Sarah
17:31
Mm-hmm.
Tara
17:33
because he visits many American cities for very short stints. He can he's essentially a drifter. He can be forgettably bland. He's extremely even tempered until he's not, and I think his compulsive tidiness means he leaves no trace evidence at crime scenes.
Dave
17:48
Yeah.
Tara
17:48
We have seen in the show he's not scared of cleaning. He'll do it. He cleaned his whole entire place when he thought Kristen
Sarah
17:52
Right
Tara
17:54
Davis dropped his toothbrush in the toilet.
Sarah
17:57
Right.
Tara
17:57
Uh
Sarah
17:57
Yeah, true.
Tara
17:57
so Dave.
Dave
17:59
Well, I went through them all to figure out which one was the actual best truest serial killer.
Tara
18:04
Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:04
I think George is the quiet, impotent rage serial killer. It just bubbles up and then he acts and then it calms down again and he has to charge up his serial killer batteries.
Sarah
18:08
Mm-hmm.
Tara
18:11
Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:14
Elaine is the opportunistic killer who hunts for material gains like the right apartment by offing the person or like, you know, sponges or whatever. Kramer is the show's version of the Zodiac Killer, but all the jazz surrounding it is even weirder, like the codes and the ciphers and the symbols, even more inscrutable. Also, I think Kramer is the closest to like that guy in Chicago that like built the murder house with all the like the little zones and
Sarah
18:41
H. H. Holmes
Dave
18:42
yes, thank you.
Sarah
18:43
buried a hundred yards from my great-great-grandfather, weirdly.
Tara
18:46
Oh damn.
Dave
18:46
Good for him.
Sarah
18:48
Yeah.
Dave
18:48
Uh but I'm also gonna go Jerry. I think Jerry is the one that eats people. I don't know why exactly, but I get that vibe from him. Like when he went feral in the muffin top episode at in the bus when he was sort of like
Sarah
18:58
Yeah
Tara
18:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:59
scratching his chest 'cause he had waxed it or shaved it or whatever earlier.
Tara
19:02
Shaved it, yes.
Sarah
19:03
Serial C E R E
Dave
19:05
Yeah, that's true.
Sarah
19:05
A L Killer, maybe
Tara
19:06
Oh, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, yep
Dave
19:07
He is a serial killer.
Sarah
19:07
would be Jerry.
Dave
19:08
Good point. He's that too.
Sarah
19:10
Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:10
But I think Jerry is probably my pick for the one that would actually be the most likely to be serial killer.
Sarah
19:15
You make good points.
Dave
19:17
All right, Kara asks, is there a living writer who writing is an instant buy, Sarah? You're like, oh.
Sarah
19:26
Am I like that?
Dave
19:26
Oh wait, hang on sec.
Sarah
19:27
Wow.
Tara
19:27
Exactly like that.
Dave
19:28
Let me close out the Seinfeld thing. All right. Writers
Sarah
19:38
Well, who are not known to me personally, uh The esteemed colleagues Pamela Koloff and Skip Hollinsworth of Texas Monthly and Jeff Gwynn and Patrick Radden Keefe. Dave!
Dave
19:51
I mean, not really. The Lord, but we're still waiting for that one. Sequel to that one, so.
Tara
19:55
Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:56
Tara.
Tara
19:57
Yeah, n for me, not really either. It used to be Curtis Sittenfield until she broke her streak with that Hillary Clinton novel. And even Margaret Atwood, who is my favorite of all time.
Sarah
20:04
Oh yeah.
Tara
20:08
has not blown me away since the Mad Dadam trilogy, so yeah, it's kind of a no for me as well.
Dave
20:14
Tomorrow the Fox, what causes you to go back and try a show again if you initially didn't like it? Uh overwhelming chatter and I mean overwhelming chatter, just not a few people saying I liked it, because that doesn't mean anything.
Sarah
20:26
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:28
And or personal wrecks from people who really know my tastes, which is a very small circle, because also tastes and tolerances. I think the tolerance part is a big part of the equation, just not
Sarah
20:38
Yes.
Dave
20:41
the stuff you like, but the you know how much you can take and that kind of thing. Uh
Sarah
20:44
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:45
one thing that does not sway me is awards.
Tara
20:47
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:47
Yeah. Try.
Tara
20:48
Yeah, same. Similarly, if people I respect are extremely effusive about a show, later season reviews specifically call out stuff the show is doing better than it was initially. My best example for this is Happy Endings, which had a very piloty pilot that turned me off, but then
Sarah
21:04
Uh
Tara
21:05
All my critic follows on Twitter really hyped for it when it came back for season two, so I dipped back in and they were right. Sarah.
Sarah
21:11
Almost nothing because life's too short, but if I get a give it another look, come in at season two type of rec from Tara and Dave. My brother Dave or John, they are the most likely to understand my initial objection and assess whether the show has adequately addressed, like fixed that bug as it settles in. So I will try it again. The only exception to that really was the Americans, which that was like overwhelming chatter. We got enough canon pitches for it and I was like impressed with it that I was like, maybe I was unfair to this, let's try it again. And I don't regret it, but generally it's like, look, there's a lot of TV and I can't do this.
Dave
21:49
Yeah. Koala 82, how often do you travel to other countries to watch television shows, Tara?
Tara
21:55
Well, it depends what is currently airing in other nations. Last week we traveled three times.
Dave
22:01
Mm-hmm.
Tara
22:01
This week it was just once.
Dave
22:02
Yeah.
Tara
22:03
Dave.
Dave
22:03
A few times a week, I think, on average, anyways.
Sarah
22:05
Like once a month. I'm not as uh England forward in my viewing as my co hosts.
Dave
22:12
Rube Goldberg, what are your favorite herbs and spices? And which herbs and spices can go to hell? Sarah.
Sarah
22:20
My favorites are garlic, dillweed, and of course, coriander and delicious cumin. And uh I don't have any spices that can go to hell. I'm not one of those um never tarragon people. Tara.
Tara
22:34
I was curious if garlic would count. I feel like that's controversial for some, but in order to sneak it in, I would say garlic powder and chili powder.
Sarah
22:42
Sure
Tara
22:43
Cinnamon and but dill is probably my number one. And spice that can go to hell. I'm only saying this because I know she still has not figured out how Patreon works, but when I was a kid, my mother used to make I believe a Weight Watchers recipe that was truly just like chicken breasts with oregano and that's it. And it was just like they would just
Sarah
23:02
Oh, I think it's
Tara
23:03
It didn't feel seasoned because it wasn't. It was just like having grass on a piece of chicken breast, and it turned me off oregano um forever. Dave.
Dave
23:12
Mm. Clove
Tara
23:14
Mm-hmm.
Dave
23:14
Cooman
Tara
23:15
These are your favorites.
Dave
23:16
Yeah, these
Tara
23:16
Uh-huh.
Dave
23:17
are the best.
Tara
23:17
Okay.
Dave
23:18
Uh sumac, cilantro, chipotle chili powder, a little bit better than regular chili powder.
Sarah
23:23
Ajá
Dave
23:24
Aleppo or Cayenne Pepper, tasty. Anise, cardamom, those are my favorites, I think. I have
Sarah
23:30
, mm.
Dave
23:31
another in-between stage called Go to Heck, and that's Sage. Go to Hell, Ty Basil.
Tara
23:38
Hmm.
Sarah
23:39
Oh, yeah
Dave
23:39
You're like, oh Basil this is a basil. What is this? Yuck. Give it a different name. Seeken! I know canonically the answer is JT Walsh, correct, but who is the character actor that you remember being your first hey it's that guy? Tara, do you know who Don Lake is?
Tara
23:55
Yeah, of course.
Dave
23:55
Yeah, I think that's my first one that I'm like I've seen that guy in other things. He is a Canadian character actor, bald from birth, classic seventies dad mustache. Did a lot of stuff for like Super Dave and the Bazaar crew back in the day, so I probably knew him from that as a kid, watching Bazaar, understanding one quarter of it at most. Just waiting for those guys with all the t-shirts. Not getting any of those jokes, but it was funny because they were wearing all the t-shirts. He was the detective in Terminator 2, and he recently was in a whole bunch of episodes of Space Force. He was one of the main characters there.
Tara
24:30
Yeah.
Dave
24:30
So he was my first.
Tara
24:31
You've also seen that guy in um Christopher Guest projects as well.
Dave
24:34
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Tara
24:36
He was a series regular on watching Ellie of all things.
Dave
24:36
Absolutely. Yep. Yeah, he also is in a lot of Bonnie Hunt stuff, so I think he might be friends with Bonnie Hunt.
Sarah
24:42
Hmm.
Tara
24:43
Mm-hmm.
Dave
24:43
Yeah. Sarah.
Sarah
24:44
I think it may literally have been JT Walsh for me, but I wanted to shout out the first one I wrote up as a hey, it's that guy for Fame Tracker, R. I. P. Hey, it's that corrupt judge or CFOharris Eulin.
Tara
24:57
Yeah, we miss him.
Sarah
24:58
It almost certainly was someone who appeared in multiple Law and Orders of the Early Seasons, like a Dennis O'Hare or Bootsick Harris. But I think it was probably JT.
Tara
25:08
Mm-hmm. Well this was hard for me to remember because as people will probably have intuited from listening to me in game time, I have a weird brain where I just remember and stuff like this. But it was probably tracking Paul Gleason from being the principal in the Breakfast Club to being a detective in Die Hard
Sarah
25:24
Mm, mhm
Tara
25:28
that it was like, oh it's that guy and then I learned his name
Sarah
25:29
, mhm, mhm.
Tara
25:31
and the rest is history.
Dave
25:32
Gonna need some new FBI guys.
Tara
25:34
Yep.
Dave
25:37
DPOV16, I was listening to an old EHE episode from 2023 where you were all discussing your tracking methods for upcoming TV shows. Does Sarah still keep the Grand Excel for the list? Does Tara still use the Just Watch app? And does Dave still use just Tara? Tara, what is your system these days any different?
Tara
25:58
No, it's the same.
Dave
25:59
Mm-hmm. Sarah?
Sarah
26:00
I still have the list.
Dave
26:01
Yeah.
Sarah
26:02
Dave.
Dave
26:02
I continue to refuse to do any scheduling and just ask Tara when we're gonna watch whatever. We're all creatures of habit and we're still doing what we were doing from three years ago.
Sarah
26:11
Listen
Dave
26:11
Sister Knight, in a recent episode, Tar referred to the Kermit Grooving meme as Kermit
Sarah
26:17
,
Dave
26:17
's sensual dancing and with some real sauce.
Sarah
26:21
you can
Dave
26:21
Since I'm certain you have done at least one Muppet Bass fuck Mary Kill, I guess I just need Tara to clarify whether or not she finds Kermit sexy.
Tara
26:30
No, I'm not Monica Geller. I I'm not attracted to Kermit, but I think we might be thinking of different memes because the one that I first became the one I was referring to, I bel I guess was a meme before it got added. succession theme song got added to it. So he's like sort of undulating. It's like it's not like his crazy arms waving
Dave
26:50
Yeah.
Tara
26:51
cheer.
Dave
26:51
Uh huh.
Tara
26:52
It's
Sarah
26:52
Right
Tara
26:52
it's that. And so I think it's been slowed down the one that I saw
Dave
26:56
Yeah.
Tara
26:57
to fit this succession music.
Dave
26:58
Uh-huh.
Tara
26:59
So that makes it look sensual.
Dave
27:01
Uh-huh. But he doesn't boil your potatoes.
Tara
27:04
No
Dave
27:05
Okay. Alright. Who is the sexiest Muppet?
Sarah
27:08
I think we need an Ask Ask EHG.what theme song would the Kermit like if you slow that down and put a theme song over it
Tara
27:18
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
27:19
What's the best match?
Tara
27:20
Right.
Sarah
27:20
Because I of course have got to go with Cold Case.
Tara
27:23
Hmm. And Dave, if your question is who's the sexiest Muppet?
Dave
27:26
Who is the sexiest Muppet?
Tara
27:27
It's the the man Muppet, uh the man pig from Pigs in Space. Whatever that guy's name is.
Dave
27:33
Uh, Link Heart Throb?
Tara
27:34
Thank you.
Dave
27:35
Yeah.
Tara
27:35
Yep.
Sarah
27:36
Oh my god.
Dave
27:36
All right.
Sarah
27:37
He looks like James Vanderbeek though a little bit.
Tara
27:38
He does
Dave
27:39
Yeah. Not um the newsman.
Tara
27:42
Mm-mm.
Dave
27:43
Hmm. He's he
Tara
27:43
No, he's got he's like all nose and then doesn't really have a mouth.
Dave
27:46
's all nose. All right.
Tara
27:47
You know what I mean?
Dave
27:48
Yep.
Tara
27:49
Mm-hmm
Dave
27:49
Deathho, your fellow co-host won a year's supply of something. Cthulhu has decided to play what what is your fascination with Cthulhu, Diatho? Cthulhu has decided to play Monkey Paw. What do the others win? Tara wins a year supply of egg McMuffins. The monkey paw curls. And the egg McMuffins are delivered each morning at 8 a. m. by Angus McDonald and his bagpipe troop. Sarah,
Sarah
28:16
Ouch.
Dave
28:17
guess a year's supply of Diet Coke, monkey ball curls, is just one giant can.
Tara
28:25
I, full disclosure, missed this question when I was doing my prep, so I did it very quickly while we were doing this, and I guess I did it wrong because I just have Sarah winning raisins and Dave winning olives. It's the thing and you hate, but it's lots of it.
Dave
28:35
You think you did do it wrong.
Tara
28:38
Sarah.
Dave
28:38
Are you familiar with the monkey
Tara
28:40
Yeah, alright, come back to me.
Dave
28:40
pa? Okay. No, that's alright.
Tara
28:42
Geez.
Dave
28:43
You can just wallow in your failure.
Tara
28:44
Alright, sorry.
Dave
28:44
Sarah.
Sarah
28:45
All right, Dave gets a year supply of coffee crisp, the monkey paw curls, and it's a year supply of coffee crisp.
Dave
28:49
Mm. All right.
Sarah
28:54
Tara gets uh your supply of Breton striped tees, but then the monkey paw curls and all the sleeve lengths go haywire, like one has no sleeves on one side
Tara
29:06
mm, mm, yeah
Sarah
29:06
and a long sleeve, another one has like the sleeves go down past your fingers.
Dave
29:11
Uh
Sarah
29:12
Yeah
Dave
29:12
I was going darker. She loses both her arms in a combine accident.
Sarah
29:17
Wow, no
Dave
29:20
I'll take care of you now.
Sarah
29:20
Jesus
Dave
29:22
Flame Splash has your ask ask ESGquestion. Painkiller
Sarah
29:27
My
Dave
29:27
scripping
Sarah
29:27
God.
Dave
29:28
in. What otherwise okay or hard-to-watch shows are worth it for the standout episodes? You got a candidate there. Go to our Discord. There's an Ask Ask EHG channel. Plop your answer there. Or you can go to the episode page on our site. Plop your answer there. And we'll see it. It is time for the tiny cannon presenting today is Margaret. Margaret, take it away!
Clip
29:50
You gotta have a gimmick. Make the celebrity eat hot wings. Cover them in puppies. Do a lie detector test. You gotta have a gimmick in our current humiliation-prone era of movie promotion. Even the biggest stars in the world are forced to dance down spirit tunnels by frazzled PRs who are desperate to eke out a viral moment. It takes more than shoving a little boo boo in Liam Neeson's face and demanding, How'd you feel about that, white boy? To produce something that makes people stop and say, Hey, did you see it? For this press junket tiny canon submission Just two celebrities in a bland hotel room with an interviewer. You recognise them, it's Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. They're in London to promote Blade Runner 2049. Harrison Ford is still being mic'd up and not paying much attention when our clip starts, with the interviewer talking about the original Blade Runner movie with Ryan. Clip one. So I thought, you know, attention to details for fans will probably like that. That's so cool that you did that. Are you a fan of the originals? Never seen it. That's the sound of interviewer Alison Hammond laughing. It's one of the few known elements in the world, along with carpentry, Callista Flock art, and selected herbal products, known to bring Harrison Ford joy. In the clip, you see him jolt to life with a joy de Fevre I don't think I've seen since Working Girl? Alison throws him a softball question about what he thought about making the sequel Then Ari immediately derails him by drinking whiskey with Ryan, only to interrupt his attempt at an answer in clip two. I said How much as when show me the money There is a brief attempt by Alison to even up the questioning. She does ask Harrison, shall we talk to Ryan? But when she brings up knitting with Ryan Gosling, much like Weezer's sweeter, he unravels clip three. I don't know what to say now. I don't know. Is this an interview or is this uh right, I'll go with you. Thank you. The cameras are nice. How does a definitively 20th century entity like the movie and the old-fashioned movie star exist in our fractured, attention-based, contemporary media ecosystem? How do we preserve and maintain the cultural treasures that define us in an age of generative AI and endless slop? Perhaps there is no better answer than one found in a clip. From the UK Light Entertainment television show This Morning, recorded eight years ago and uploaded to YouTube where it has 23 million views to date. Tell us about it, Harrison. Clip four. There is a darkness and there is a dystopian atmosphere, but there is also a triumph of the human spirit. I mean bested. Is there a mic I can drop? When Harrison Ford returned to the promotional circuit for the TV show 1923, he had one demand. His only UK appearance would be for this morning, and it had to be with Allison Hammond.
Tara
33:09
Thank you, Margaret. This was delightful in my opinion, but Sarah, why don't you start us off?
Sarah
33:15
Margaret, a contributor at Best Evidence, uh just wrote a lovely piece for us about a Lizzie Borden jukebox musical and uh ways that Margaret's mind works in terms of pitching things is a delightful planet and I hope to visit it one day. This was a delight immediately. I wasn't totally sure what the sort of angle was gonna be. Like, is this Harrison Ford being crustily defiant in the face of Allison Hammond's extreme charm? Is it the opposite? But once he reached across Ryan Gosling to get Ryan Gosling 's whiskey, I was like, mm-hmm, this is canonical, absolutely. She is so charming and winning and has elevated or like re-elevated Baking Show after a couple of three seasons where like the Co-hosts were not. Sandy just like the minute she was off the show, couldn't stop talking shit about how it was a miserable experience. Matt Lucas was just Matt Lucas, it just was not a good fit. Whatever. The instant she arrived in the tent, it was like, oh, here we go. Like, drop back into gear. Let's go. Anywhere else that I see her, I am charmed. And especially here where she is immediately like laughing hysterically at her own shit. Like in this way that's very welcoming, I guess. She is great. She has unbelievable charisma, very friendly, warm presence, but also very funny. And that laugh is one of a kind. It's Gorgeous. And this was a delight for everyone involved. You actually love to see people actually seeming legitimately to enjoy a Bullshit morning show experience. So you can't beat that, truly. Excellent submission. Thank you, Margaret.
Dave
35:09
First of all, what is this Liam Neeson thing she's talking about?
Tara
35:12
I don't know.
Dave
35:13
Okay. Sounded like that everybody knew about that one, but nobody does. The other thing I guess to add to Sarah is that this is a high level of difficulty, that you're on a press junket and you're thousands of miles away from home and it's probably very early in the morning and you have another 12 hours of this.
Sarah
35:22
Mm-hmm.
Dave
35:30
No thank you.
Sarah
35:31
And you're old.
Dave
35:31
Plus it's Harrison Fort Fucking
Sarah
35:33
And your hair
Dave
35:33
what am I doing here?
Sarah
35:34
said forward.
Tara
35:34
Yeah.
Sarah
35:35
Yep.
Dave
35:35
Uh she makes it all happen. It is in the word infectious and you just Can't not laugh while you're watching this. I had never even heard about this before, so it was all new to me, and I thought it was delightful.
Tara
35:49
I agree. By the way, I looked it up. I guess this was a Fox. The Liam Neeson thing was a Fox News interview from last year where he went viral for his answer to what is a laboo-boo. This was during the Naked Gun remake or sequel press tour, I guess. We'll link that in the show notes. This I picked it obviously because Al cause Allison is back on our TVs again. The latest season of bake off just started and thank God because I really didn't realize how much I missed her until she came back. She really is. Sarah's right. Such a perfect presence for that show. I didn't know anything about her career before that, because I am not. English, I assumed that she was a presenter of some kind, but I didn't realize it was like this on a morning show and she's so good.
Sarah
36:30
Me neither
Tara
36:31
When you do a press junket like this as an interviewer, it is So soul-killing, first of all, because you know you're gonna be wherever you are in the order, they're not happy to see you. It takes their whole
Sarah
36:42
No
Tara
36:43
their whole stupid day. They're answering the same questions over and over and over again. So whenever I am in a position to do an interview on this side. I always try to like just do as much research as I possibly can and ask something that I have not already seen them answer somewhere else.
Sarah
36:59
mhm, mhm
Tara
37:00
I will usually finish with a funny one. Didn't occur to me. I mean, I'm no Allison Hammond who is to just go into it being like, we're gonna just do all funny ones. We're gonna just be ridiculous. I'm gonna say straight up, I've never seen the movie you're talking about. Immediately disarm them by self-deprecating. I've never seen Harrison Ford so animated, like on or off script. He's So delighted so instantly, like for Margaret to say his demand about his latest junket was I only want to talk to Allison. Like, yeah, of course.
Sarah
37:36
Mm-hmm.
Tara
37:37
I have seen Ryan Gosling giggle like this in an interview before, and perhaps I will pitch it in the future, but there's a a famous episode of Graham Norton that he was on with Greg Davies, where he like just was helplessly destroyed by the story that Greg Davies is telling.
Dave
37:52
That one I'd say.
Tara
37:53
Yes, I've shown that to you.
Dave
37:55
Yeah.
Tara
37:55
Fantastic. It inspired me to just get weird with it in the future. Again, I am not fit to touch the hem of Allison Hammond's garment on any. level, but she's shown me a different way to go with this uh extremely bullshitty interview situation.
Dave
38:11
All right, Sara D. Bunting, what do you say officially on the cannonworthiness, comma, tininess of this argument?
Sarah
38:19
Oh, this morning is a sunny one. It's a yes for me.
Tara
38:24
Me too
Dave
38:24
Alright, so Hammond interviewing Ford and Gosling from this morning hereby inducted into the extra hot, great, tiny press junket cannon.
Clip
38:36
Americans love a winner. Yep. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
38:42
It is time to discover who are not quite winners and not quite losers of the week. I will go first. Our first not quite winner is twenty-one Jump Street getting yet another sequel coming in December of next year with the original movie cast returning. So here's my theory. I just want to put it out there so that when you watch it and you're like, oh yeah, Dave said that.
Tara
39:03
Mm-hmm.
Dave
39:04
So there was 21 and then 22.
Tara
39:06
Yes.
Dave
39:06
This is going to be called 24.
Tara
39:08
Oh.
Dave
39:09
Okay, so there's one that's missing.
Tara
39:11
Mm-hmm.
Dave
39:12
And previous to this sequel, there was that aborted 21 Jump Street Men in Black crossover thing they were gonna do
Tara
39:19
Right.
Dave
39:19
My theory is why they're calling this twenty four is there gonna be an in joke in the movie that there is lost time for all the lead characters, and that lost time was the movie they never made with the men in black.
Tara
39:29
I could
Dave
39:29
They got neuralized by the men in black.
Tara
39:29
see it. Yep, I could see it.
Sarah
39:31
Uh-huh.
Dave
39:32
Uh huh.
Tara
39:32
Mm-hmm.
Dave
39:32
Alright, putting it out
Sarah
39:32
Sure.
Dave
39:33
there in the universe.
Tara
39:33
Nice.
Dave
39:34
And I have a second winner. It's kind of a winner, maybe a loser. Battle of the Network Stars
Tara
39:39
Mm-hmm
Dave
39:40
getting revived. Oh! As Battle of the Streaming Stars , okay. On Roku.
Sarah
39:47
Mm.
Dave
39:48
That was those were the
Tara
39:50
Yeah.
Dave
39:53
Andokite Loser, but also kind of winner is the Director General of the BBC, winner for having the following name, Matthew Britton.
Tara
40:02
Yeah.
Dave
40:02
Well done.
Sarah
40:03
Mm-hmm.
Tara
40:03
Spelled a different way, but pronounce Britain.
Dave
40:05
Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter.
Tara
40:06
Mm-hmm. No, you're right
Dave
40:07
Loser because he's seen the fifteen minute Doctor Who episode that was fully AI generated and he's like, Yeah, that was pretty good. There's the guy making shows at BBC.enjoy, British people.
Tara
40:18
Seriously, especially now, like the BBC has put out a tender for like different s
Dave
40:22
Yep.
Tara
40:23
production companies to like come and pitch their concepts for reviving Doctor Who.
Dave
40:27
Mm-hmm.
Tara
40:28
And so if I was one of those other creators, I'd be like, well, fuck this. I don't want to do this
Sarah
40:32
Mm-hmm.
Tara
40:32
if he if his taste is, eh, this was good enough.
Dave
40:36
Mm-hmm.
Tara
40:36
Anyway.
Dave
40:37
Sir
Sarah
40:38
My not quite winner is HBO's The Trial of Louise Woodward, which has added Hugh Lori. I am pretty sure that every single British actor is now in the trial of Louise Woodward.
Dave
40:45
,
Sarah
40:49
But it is a good roster and I am looking forward to that. Not quite loser, Martha Stewart, who was accused by new Real Housewives of New York City star Haley Glassman of dining and dashing at the polo bar. I can't decide which is more dispiriting. That she did it purposefully or that she did it because she's in her 80s and just forgot.
Tara
41:15
Yeah, I mean I think it's like she showed up, they invited her over, she hung out for a bit and ordered something and then was like, All right, see ya and just l stuck them with the bill more so than she ordered and left before me.
Sarah
41:26
Right
Tara
41:27
It's just like, you guys got this right, all right, goodbye.
Sarah
41:30
Wow. Okay.
Tara
41:32
My not quite winner of the week is Reacher getting an early season six renewal shortly after season four wrapped with 66 million viewers in 28 days, whatever that may mean. If those numbers are even real, who's to say? But more Reachers still coming, at least two more seasons, which is good. Minot loser of the week is Alex Earl, the star of Earl Meets World. She is an influencer She claimed that in an interview with Interview Magazine this week that she has never read a book and when pushed back said, Well, maybe Dr. Seuss.
Dave
42:08
Hmm. Yeah, but she went to Book Magazine and she said she's never done an interview. So, better get your story straight.
Tara
42:17
Yeah, I mean, I'm sure this is all
Sarah
42:17
Yeah.
Tara
42:20
fake, like she graduated from some kind of school. I'm sure she's read a book. Like it's different
Dave
42:25
Pictograph you
Tara
42:27
Well, yeah, I I don't know if she went to college. I assume she's graduated high school, but I
Dave
42:32
Win, lose, or educate

Oh What's that, Sarah? You have to go take a dump for the next 12 or 20 minutes? Okay, we'll see you on the other side. It's game time Hello and welcome to the first ever listener game time. An extra, extra hot rate, the new segment made possible by you, our supporters. Thank you so much. Very exciting. Our first game time of the month, and it is the month of Amy Allenspock. We've got five trivia-minded games from her to test your knowledge of the crispy edges and gooey centers of TV history. The month's scores so far are Kim. Welcome, Kim, with zero. Eleanor, we've got Eleanor, she's got zero. And we got Sarah all the way from Australia. She already has zero points. Well done, everybody Today we are playing Who's the Boss? and Amy explains. In this game, we'll journey through the cubicles, backrooms, and break rooms to meet some of TV's most memorable bosses and the people who are lucky enough to work for them. The goal is to correctly guess the name of the boss and the show as a pair, just by hearing a little bit about one of their faithful employees. To start, you'll get the name of the employee and the role at the workplace. If you need a hint, I'm going to give you the name of that workplace where the show is set. Two points right away, one point after the hint, and yes, you can guess at each stage Sarah Bunting. No, Sarah, don't say anything. We're fine. We're good Here is an example to get you going. The employee's name is Dwight Schroot, and he is the salesman slash assistant to the regional manager. Now, can you guess the boss and the show as a pair? Anyone know it? All right, Eleanor, hit us up. What do you got?

Dave
47:30
All right. I just wanna we said this off off mic, but I'm being very lenient with the bosses here. So if you only give me a first name, that's fine. If you can give me a really good description of them, I will perhaps give you the point. But Eleanor doesn't seem like she's there. Okay. The workplace is the Sunshine Cab Company.

This is Extra Hot Crate Minis. Today's topic is bonding. Pierce Brosnan is improbably about to headline an old West drama called The Sun on AMC.choose another big screen bond and cast him against type in a brand new starring vehicle of your devising, Dave I have one, but first I saw this topic, uh so I emailed our James Bond expert, Nick Reinwald Jones, to see if he wanted to add something to this is his Edgy sitcom in which Sean Connery plays the contankerous chef of a three-star restaurant in Chicago. He's forced to resign after a local news expose. reveals that he likes to cook naked. So he teams up with his granddaughter, played by a Leaton Meister to start a fancy catering company. Only to discover the only job they can land are snobby kids parties. Sandwiches I'm not making sandwiches. That's the Chicago Way coming soon to Fox. All right. And mine mine is simply Sean Connery takes over for Andy Cohen on all Bravo reunion shows. Oh. Wood watch Sarah. Yes. I misread the brief here because there was a straight either in there, which made me think that we could Put him on an existing show. So that's what I'm doing. Daniel Craig is a fellow ambulance chaser in an ill-fitting suit and string tie on Better Call Saul. Uh if you'll indulge me for a second, uh this topic came up just hours after I had read a review of a new documentary pre premiering this week at South by Southwest called Becoming Bond. It's the story of the very weird life of George Lazenby, the amateur actor who was p plucked from obscurity to play Bond in on Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969, and then subsequently went off the rails and left the role, leaving a drug haze of hippie nonsense behind him. I can't wait to see this, but until it becomes available, I will instead enjoy imagining Lazenby, a six foot five Australian connoisseur of swinging threesomes, and the only bond to ever receive a Golden Globe nomination, in another iconic role in my new limited series. superhero show for Hulu Plus, Kit Kat Club about a transgendered vet tech who moonlights as the modern day cat woman. Oh my god, they love it so much. Would also just love something called hippie nonsense, whatever that meant. Mine is Timothy Dalton stars opposite the original Lily from Modern Family in her TV comeback vehicle, a reboot of Punky Brewster. Oh my god, look out for that fridge original Lily!
