We’re thrilled Santiago Melli-Huber could return to discuss the inter-agency copaganda — and, to be fair, the realistic sibling interactions — of Line Of Fire, a puzzle-box-ish network procedural full of cop tropes, unrealistic travel times, and actors we had trouble reconciling with relatively likable characters. We went Around The Dial with Best Of The Best, Dropout content, and Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story before Sarah bellied up to the Canon with a pitch for Drunk History. The Savant won, Taylor Frankie Paul lost, and Game Time was so on-brand with its acting-through-the-generations concept that it took nearly a generation to complete. Pocket an origami swan and join us for an all-new Extra Hot Great!

Whoever this killer is, one of you was their goal. We need to keep this out of the public eye You need to continue business as usual.
Dave
00:16
This is the Extra Hot Grey Podcast, episode 633 for the week of September 21st, 2026. I am Grumpy Near Retiree David T. Cole, and I'm here with pending security clearance, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:34
Forget you, Dad.
Dave
00:35
Madam Marshall Tar Ariana.
Tara
00:37
Please call me Her Majesty.
Dave
00:39
And covert affair, Santiago Mille-Huber.
Santiago
00:43
ACAB includes Secret Service fuck boys.
Tara
00:50
Welcome to Extra Hot Great for another week joining us here. He's a drag queen in San Francisco. He tried to make us watch Dimension 20 for a canon pitch, and now that we've inducted Game Changer, he might try again, but not today. It's Santiago Mille-Huber. Welcome back.
Sarah
01:07
Santiago
Dave
01:08
The sword of Damocles hangs over us all.
Santiago
01:11
Surprise, bitch. I bet you thought you'd seen the last of me.
Tara
01:15
I just wanna say Santiago and I were tr texting yesterday and he brought up dimension twenty
Dave
01:20
Yeah.
Tara
01:21
and I was like, mm-hmm, because I'd already written that intro. Oh, but
Santiago
01:26
Uh, I had a sneaking suspicion that you would.
Dave
01:29
The ghosts of the past are coming back to haunt us.
Tara
01:32
But not today.
Dave
01:33
Yeah.
Tara
01:33
Today we are here to talk about line of fire. Every member of the Hollingsworth family has devoted themselves to national security. Father Mike, Peter Krause, and excuse me, Peter Krause
Dave
01:45
Thank you.
Tara
01:46
and son Micah, Tommy O'Brien, are Secret Service agents. Mother Jane, Hope Davis, is high up in the U. S. Marshals Service Daughter Claire, Kat Cunning, is an FBI agent. Sun Russ, Taylor Bloom, just started at the DOJ.what must their dinner table conversations be like, well they'd have to have dinner together to know that's dialogue direct from the pilot. Nearly everyone has a reason to be annoyed by someone else in the family, but when Jane and Claire's latest case turns out to have implications for all the Hollingsworths, can they pull together to protect themselves and each other. The show was created by Joshua Saffron, best known for writing and producing Gossip Girl, and for running Smash in its second season after Teresa Rebeck uh left the show He did also create the FBI drama Quantico. Another executive producer is Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former President George W. Bush. Only one episode of Line of Fire has aired so far on NBC September twenty-first. We got access to two episodes, but we'll be careful about spoilers. Let's do the chen check-in. Santiago, should our listeners watch Line of Fire?
Santiago
02:55
I have seen worse entries in the copaganda genre, but this is a no for me.
Tara
02:59
Sarah
Sarah
03:00
Almost exactly that qualified no. It did a lot of things well though.
Tara
03:04
Dave
Dave
03:05
I'm always fascinated to revisit what the network drama is in 2026, but
Clip
03:12
It could have been nicer.
Tara
03:16
Yeah, it's a no for me too. I sort of suggested this with the idea of like, it's nice to do a network show every now and then, and it is, but you can't do it all the time. Normally we start with our guest, but I have to ask Sarah first. This seems very calculated to fit the blue blood -shaped hole in people's hearts that isn't already being filled by Boston Blue. What Did line of fire get wrong in this mission?
Sarah
03:40
It's like Santiago said, like it's cross-agency national level propaganda
Tara
03:47
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
03:47
Also having trouble recalibrating my Hope Davisometer after Furious, because
Tara
03:53
Yeah
Sarah
03:55
no spoilers. Kalsa is actually less sort of blandly smug and off-putting than I almost always find him.
Tara
04:05
Well, you can't get a little bit of a
Sarah
04:05
here. I think it is a little bit faster paced in the dialogue and the way it's edited. It seems a little more confident and ambitious than the usual flauding pilot It got a lot done in the first couple episodes. I watched both that we had access to, but I just have a feeling once it gets to actually solving the mystery for the viewer that it's just gonna kind of unravel and go back to like revert to mean. So for what it does, I think it's good, but it's it's what it does. Like it's copaganda.
Tara
04:40
Yes. It's very now that's what I call network cop
Dave
04:45
Not only
Tara
04:45
show.
Dave
04:46
is it like copaganda, it's like multi-agency umbrella tentacles everywhere
Tara
04:52
Yeah.
Dave
04:52
copaganda, yeah.
Tara
04:53
I will give it credit for the restraint of not having Neo Wallace
Sarah
04:53
Yeah
Tara
04:57
the DHS detective at the end of the pilot be like Mike's first wife or something, because I really was waiting for that and then they didn't
Sarah
05:03
Yeah.
Dave
05:03
It really has that Star Wars everybody's related to everybody
Sarah
05:05
Yeah
Dave
05:07
feel to it, yeah.
Tara
05:07
Yes. Okay, Santiago, you've lived in the DMV, the greater DC
Sarah
05:08
Mm-hmm.
Tara
05:12
area. Were you constantly coming in contact with dedicated noble public servants like the Hollingsworths in your time there?
Dave
05:19
Yeah, were ya?
Santiago
05:20
Uh, I was constantly coming in contact with people who see themselves that way.
Tara
05:26
Mm-hmm.
Dave
05:26
Yeah, yeah.
Santiago
05:27
I actually watched them twice because if I'm going to hate something, I'm going to hate it from a position of authority.
Tara
05:30
Whoa.
Sarah
05:32
Mm-hmm.
Tara
05:33
That is above and beyond.
Sarah
05:34
Relatable.
Dave
05:34
Yeah.
Tara
05:35
No one told you to do that.
Santiago
05:36
I'm a thorough bitch, alright?
Tara
05:38
Sure.
Dave
05:38
Yeah.
Santiago
05:38
Um I'm gonna I'm gonna start off with what I liked about this show because there was something that I liked, and that was uh the complicated family dynamic. I thought it they handled that very well. It's dysfunctional but grounded and they really nailed emotionally manipulative family relations.
Tara
05:55
Mm-hmm.
Santiago
05:55
It's a dynamic that I and many other people can relate to.
Tara
05:58
Sure.
Santiago
05:58
There's this one scene in the pilot where the two older siblings are chatting on the phone while they're working. And they're each sharing with the other their struggles with their respective parent, and then decidedly not looping in the third sibling into the call.
Tara
06:14
Mm-hmm
Santiago
06:15
Uh that was just so real, the way that family members make calculated choices of who they share what information with. So there's a great show buried there that just had all this propaganda stuff thrown onto it.
Dave
06:30
Yeah.
Santiago
06:30
But like with each of these characters and their deep-rooted and specific dynamics like It has like a like I said, the makings of a really compelling family drama that I would watch if it uh were an otherwise a cookie cutter cop mystery. Like there are so many tropes that
Tara
06:43
Mm-hmm.
Santiago
06:45
We've seen a thousand times. Someone's partner is murdered in episode one and the survivor throws herself into her work. Uh, the killer leaving behind a calling card that a detective covers up for personal reasons.
Dave
06:56
Yeah. The officer who's too involved with his protectee.
Tara
07:01
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:01
Yeah
Santiago
07:02
Right. It's just been done so many times in so many more interesting ways that it felt lazy. So after watching the second episode, I thought to myself, who the fuck made this shit? And as Tara alluded to earlier, it is executive produced by Jenna Bush Hager, you know Jenna Bush, of Descended from Multiple War Criminals fame, and suddenly everything about the show made sense.
Tara
07:24
Mm-hmm. Yeah, I mean she didn't create it. She's a she's an EP, but she shepherded it through to being made.
Santiago
07:32
Right.
Sarah
07:32
Yeah
Santiago
07:33
And I I read something about like the show is like
Tara
07:33
So
Santiago
07:35
inspired by her experiences with the Secret Service
Tara
07:39
Okay, so who was she fucking?
Santiago
07:39
or something. Like
Tara
07:41
I guess is the next question
Santiago
07:41
Uh
Sarah
07:41
Yeah
Santiago
07:41
that's what I thought. Who was she fucking?
Dave
07:44
Yeah.
Sarah
07:44
And also, does she think anyone thinks as well of her pops as I think of Chris Chalk, who, spoiler I guess, shows up in episode two
Santiago
07:50
Oh my god
Dave
07:51
Yeah
Sarah
07:53
and I was like, oh. Thank God. The grown-ups can talk. But also, what are you doing, bro?
Dave
07:57
I I agree with what you said
Sarah
07:59
Yeah.
Dave
08:01
about the family dynamics. My only wish is that they could have sold it better in the dialogue. Because when they actually are talking to each other, the actual words on the scripts are kind of painful to listen to as a representative of real-world conversations.
Tara
08:16
Mm-hmm.
Santiago
08:16
And
Sarah
08:17
Yeah
Santiago
08:17
every line could have been said by any character.
Tara
08:20
Yes.
Sarah
08:20
Yeah.
Tara
08:21
I don't give Peter Krause credit for much, but his letting the show joke about Mike's bad eyesight minutes into the episode with the gigantic tech size on his phone was was pretty good.
Dave
08:32
I don't think you can make it that big on his own. Like, I don't think you can actually do that on an iPhone. Like you can get it bigger, but I don't think you can make it that big. It was like
Sarah
08:40
It really is like one letter at a time.
Dave
08:42
Hello and it was split over two lines, you know.
Sarah
08:46
It's like that onion headline that says war and R is on the second page.
Dave
08:50
Yeah.
Sarah
08:51
Yeah. Uh
Santiago
08:53
I I would like to run through some of the rough notes that I took for episode one to give viewers an impression of my mental state throughout this episode. Peter Krause's character is displaying a level of professional ethics I simply do not believe coming from a career cop. Oh, never mind, he almost immediately asks his DOJson for an illegal favor. Hope Davis describes their family as, quote, human superheroes doing the Lord's work.
Tara
09:19
I forgot that.
Santiago
09:19
Secret Service Fuckboi is so coked out in the dinner scene.
Tara
09:23
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
09:24
Mm-hmm.
Santiago
09:24
Another terrible Hope Davis line, quote, I don't believe in you, I'm sure of you. Shut the fuck up. Take a second pass at the script.
Tara
09:36
Yeah.
Dave
09:36
Uh I have an exciting update. I owe
Sarah
09:38
Yes.
Dave
09:39
line of fire an apology. You can make your text that big, as you can see right now. Somebody take a screen time of that, will you please
Sarah
09:47
Uh while we're working on the visual aids in this notoriously visual medium. I will say that as always, nobody knows how to call an Uber or a Lyft or like Greek some car service name so that people aren't announcing in one scene, hey, let's get drunk, and then two scenes later, zipping off to some crime scene. I just I mean I'm sure this actually happens and Lord knows NYPD is doing it all the time. Allegedly. But come on. Like, there's not quite enough for us to pay attention to besides Them being too impaired to drive for them to be too impaired to drive.
Tara
10:27
I mean, you cared about their well-being more than I did. I gave no second thought to that.
Sarah
10:31
Oh, I'm not saying I cared about their well-being.
Tara
10:34
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
10:35
I'm just saying if the dialogue perhaps had been a little better or this had been a little less tropey, I wouldn't have had time to notice it.
Dave
10:43
Speaking about the tropes, we often complain on this show, or at least point out, about whenever you have two law enforcement agencies in play, they always have to have a jurisdiction beef over who gets to lead it. Which I think, once again, if you're like, Oh, you want to take the lead in this, I can go home at five o'clock? Hey, have at it.
Sarah
11:00
Yeah, seriously.
Dave
11:01
I hope you get the your collar. But What they do in this show is they really shoehorn in that trope into a metaphor for the family dynamics where Eventually mother and daughter are working the same case from two different agencies, and it's almost like an Abbott and Costello routine sometimes when they're like in front of the press. or digging on each other because one wants to work the room this way and one wants to w do it another way. It was so ham fisted. Like it really was like Coyote dropping an anvil from the cliff and the anvil has white letters that says metaphor on it.
Tara
11:37
Uh I also have to say n and we can freely say this because it happened in the pilot, it's not a spoiler anymore. The narrative that only Claire has the brilliant mind and will to get to the bottom of this case that everyone else just wants to close is kind of undermined by her being in a relationship with a likely covert agent
Sarah
11:55
Mm
Tara
11:55
for quite some time, like at least months, if not years, I believe.
Sarah
11:58
-hmm
Dave
11:59
Yeah. Are you talking about Claire as played by Celia Weston?
Tara
12:03
Great granddaughter? Yes.
Dave
12:04
Yeah.
Tara
12:05
She does.
Sarah
12:05
Oh my god, it really was uncanny.
Tara
12:08
Yeah.
Santiago
12:08
Um, can I be a pedantic for a moment? Okay, so Tara alluded to me spending some time in the DMV.there's the daughter at one point is at a crime scene in Crozet, Virginia, and then finds some evidence and goes straight to her mother who is at a gala in presumably DC.
Tara
12:25
Mm-hmm.
Santiago
12:26
Two and a half hours away from Crozet, the daughter walks into the gala still dripping wet from the mud. She would have dried off in two and a half hours.
Tara
12:35
Yeah.
Santiago
12:36
Not the show's biggest sin, but something that irked
Dave
12:38
Yeah. Another Millie Hubert slam dunk.
Santiago
12:39
me.
Dave
12:44
Take that line of fire.
Tara
12:47
It's also even if she hadn't dried off, like someone would have stopped her walking into the ballroom and like tracking m mud fucking everywhere I spent most of the first episode thinking, isn't this show more interesting if one of the kids does something outside of the family business, but then we find out one did and it actually is not more interesting.
Dave
13:07
And then that really is outside the family business anyways.
Tara
13:09
Yeah, yes, I suppose that's true.
Santiago
13:12
They alluded to the youngest son, like, oh, you could have been an artist. So like maybe he actually did want to be an artist at one point.
Tara
13:17
Mm-hmm. Hmm. I assumed that was just preparation for reveal that he's gay. Sorry. Because I feel like one of the four kids has to be, if not two.
Santiago
13:30
He does have a nice set of DSLs on his face.
Tara
13:35
Mike jokes about this in the pilot, but I would love to know if Secret Service agents really do have worse health insurance than Marshalls do. Because that seems like it should be the other way around. So he says that's why they're not divorced
Sarah
13:46
All right.
Tara
13:48
formally.
Sarah
13:49
Oh, yeah.
Dave
13:50
And this
Santiago
13:51
And I just assumed
Dave
13:52
is
Santiago
13:52
they don't the government doesn't care if Secret Service agents die, because that's kind of their job.
Tara
13:55
I guess. Well, I hope the real ones have much better eyesight than m Mike does, cough
Santiago
13:57
To literally take the bullet.
Tara
14:03
cough.
Dave
14:03
Yeah, that does really seem like a disqualifying thing, doesn't it?
Tara
14:06
Yeah, it does
Dave
14:06
Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah
14:08
I hope we also get like there's a cousin and they work also in the Treasury Department, which is where the Secret Service technically is nestled.
Tara
14:16
Right
Dave
14:17
Yeah.
Sarah
14:17
in the chain and there's some like counterfeit thing or like someone walks through a scene and you could see that it's like the DBcooper ransom
Tara
14:25
You wish
Sarah
14:25
money.
Santiago
14:26
Uh another pedantic moment, uh it switched from treasury to homeland security uh after 9-11. But yeah, your point stands.
Clip
14:39
New fangled stories on my electric story box.
Dave
14:44
It is time to go around the dial. Let's start with Tara.
Tara
14:48
A raucous comedy set in the cutthroat world of collegiate Bollywood dance competitions is something you don't know you need until you get it, and it's called Best of the Best. This story is about Maya. Maitri Ramakrishn from Never Have I Ever and Anjali Priyanka Kadia, best friends since childhood. After a dance routine they do at a talent show goes viral the bad way, they both enroll at you UCLA, eager to reinvent themselves, but they each have baggage they can't leave behind. Maya has always felt inferior to Anjali, who is very beautiful and cool and makes friends easily. Anjali has struggled academically, whereas Maya is a programming brainiac as well as a creative and fearless dancer. And on the day they get moved into their dorm room, Anjali 's mother, played by Janina Gavancar Tells her that if she finds out Anjali 's been goofing off, she'll stop paying her tuition. UCLA turns out to have an extremely competitive Bollywood dance team, which both girls join. Anjali because she has a crush on the captain and Maya for personal glory. And as a connoisseur of dance movies, where a lot of them disappoint is the volume of dance sequences you see. This is not a problem here. There are five in about the first half hour, and that's before we even get to the first qualifying competition in the run up to the titular best of the best finals. All the choreography is innovative and fun, and you can tell the two leads are both excellent actors as well as dancing ringers, and then between and sometimes during the dancing scenes, you get a sweet and relatable story of female friendship during a transitional moment. The Netflix original movies I have watched vary wildly in quality, so I rarely go into them expecting to be wowed. This is probably the best of the best that I've seen this year, so suck a dick office romance For my plug, speaking of teens, I'm gonna recommend the Listen to Sassy Club. This is the club of our sister podcast, Listen to Sassy, where we are reading every issue of Sassy magazine. I believe we are over the over the halfway mark now. But if you join the club for just five dollars a month, you can get access to PDF scans of every single issue, which you really can't find anywhere else unless you decide to try to buy them yourself. So Do that, listen to Sassy dot com slash club.
Dave
17:04
All right, Sandy, what do you got for us?
Santiago
17:07
Well, don't sound so excited, Dave. I've got two things. Uh I'll keep the first one brief because a lot's been said about it already. I recently started and binged all of Matlock, and it is incredible. Hot take, Kathy Bates is a good actor.
Tara
17:22
Oh, that matlock.
Sarah
17:23
Oh
Tara
17:24
Okay, yes. I thought you meant the original one. I forgot about the remake.
Dave
17:26
Right.
Tara
17:27
Go on.
Santiago
17:28
It can get kind of repetitive like any procedural, but her performance is really complex and rich.
Sarah
17:28
well
Santiago
17:34
And the show is a great reminder that the Sackler family couldn't have poisoned all of us with opioids by themselves. The systems in place enabled it, and I like that the show has something to say, and I really appreciate that about it. But I mainly want to talk about Game Changer on dropout.
Tara
17:49
Here we go.
Santiago
17:50
Here we go. Which recently wrapped up season eight, uh, on Monday. Game Changer recently got into the canon, and I'm going to give myself partial credit for that by loosening the jar, priming the pump for uh this panel of esteemed judges to let it drop out content into the canon.
Dave
18:09
It's worth just pointing out that what we're talking about is many moons ago.
Santiago
18:09
Yes.
Dave
18:14
We're talking years now. You wanted to make an argument for Dimension Twenty in the canon and it was so long ago that it was still just a web series on YouTube or something like that. And it was also like twenty hours long, I think, the episode.
Tara
18:26
It was really long
Dave
18:26
So we're like, I can't. This camp.
Santiago
18:30
Totally fair. I don't envision myself pitching Dimension 20 for the canon. This might be recency bias, but this season of Game Changer had some of the most extraordinary episodes Uh like I will never forget Anna Garcia 's Feral episode long meltdown in Roulette 2, and if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. But what I really want to discuss is about episode six titled Noise Some Makes. It's a very meta take on their other show, Make some Noise. This is going to sound gibberish to people who've never heard of the of Dropout. But in this episode, three teams of four people have to play a psychotic version of the telephone game. First, a sketch artist is given a secret prompt. They have a minute to draw the prompt. That drawing is then given to a very reluctant production assistant, Kaylin, having the worst day of her life because she was unknowingly roped into participating.
Sarah
19:22
Yeah.
Santiago
19:22
She's in an isolated phone booth and has to describe that drawing to Zach Oyama. Zach, who, by the way, is being forced to listen to Smooth by Santana on a loop. He hears the prompt through the phone and then has to act it out for Lily Doo, who then has to try and guess what the original prompt was based on that whole chain and what happens in the clip you're about to hear is so miraculous it made me believe in god and that god's name is lily does
Clip
19:54
Wow, is it just me and these monkeys? Oh well. Hey, we're all playing the game, right? I guess I'll go first. You guys all get behind me, okay? Alright. Jack, be nimble, Jack, be quick. You guys wanna get in, all you monkeys? I think that's pretty much it. Wow. Wow So what do you not get? Lily writing a small novella. Lily. What? Give me your heart, make it real. Or forget about it, you know? Lily, what do you think is the prompt? Man playing limbo with a group of monkeys possibly as metaphor for evolution? Guys, guys. Oh I can't believe it. Holy shit. The evolution of man diagram, but each step leans further and further back into Linda. What the fuck? I'll be honest, no part of my was thinking about evolution out
Santiago
21:14
Based on Zack's narration, anyone could have guessed Monkeys playing limbo, but Lily Doo's ability to divine the deeper meaning that Zack didn't even intend to portray was a great example. Of how well the team at Dropout knows one another and understands their specific brands of comedy and how much Dropout's content across its various shows rewards devoted fans who have gotten to know the comedians. so well over the years, almost as much as they've gotten to know each other and how they think and what the prompt possibly could have been. Insane
Sarah
21:48
That is
Santiago
21:48
moment.
Tara
21:49
Yep, it was cool.
Sarah
21:49
wild.
Santiago
21:50
And for my plug, Tara mentioned at the top that I am a drag queen in San Francisco. Uh give me a follow on Blue Sky and Instagram. My name is MariCone. If you don't speak Spanish, it sounds like a normal name, and if you do speak Spanish, it is a hilarious pun. I am inviting all Bay Area Dolly Parton fans to come to my show on Thursday, October 8th. It is a Dolly Parton tribute night called I Will Always Love You. It's happening at a bar called the Edge in the Castro at 10 p. m. So come on down.
Dave
22:21
All right, Sarah, what do you got for us?
Sarah
22:23
Whiplash I'm talking about monster colon, the Lizzie Borden story. As I said in my review on bestevidence. fyi, it's not dull. Pardon the pun. It's thought provoking. It is infuriating. It plays really loose with the few facts that we do know for sure about that day. Victims' ages and vocations are changed like way too much. It's not a shift. It's like an outright change. Floor plans are incorrect. Guardian scenes are scored with the runaways and already larded with anachronistic dialogue. Sarah Paulson is portraying Aileen Warnos. The portrayal is either tasteless or brilliant, unless it's actually both. I still haven't decided. I complained about Monster Lizzie to my spouse for a full 20 minutes. I could easily have kept going past that. But could I keep going with the four plus episodes I haven't watched yet? I'm not sure. I think that cases like this endure because of what we don't know, because we're ninety-eight percent sure that Lizzie Borden killed her parents with an axe. But those last two percentage points contain multitudes, and it's in that space that Ian Brennan and Max Winkler have a great opportunity to investigate and reimagine the case. Monster and American crime story return almost inevitably to ideas of repression, pathology, warping effects of homophobia and or racism and or misogyny. the constrictions of society, whether that's larger capital S society or the smaller societies that we form at home and in families. And broadly, this is a very worthwhile tact to take in the true crime genre. And sometimes from this creative team in the Murphy verse, the results are very moving. Season two of American Crime Story, the Menendez season of Monster or Monsters had some really thought-provoking, rueful moments. But at other times, and it's more often than not in Monster Seasons, it is misguided or off-tone or seems like it's rationalizing ghastly murders and desecration. The approach makes sense here for Lizzie Borden's story. It's easy to theorize that desperation in the face of mistreatment by her parents, shame about feelings for other women, no hope of improving her prospects by conventional means, could have created this monster and it's been theorized, in fact, but you can work in this space without straight up ignoring basic Case info that's just going to annoy semi-experts in the field. Charlie Huntum is very talented, but he's 25 years too young to play Andrew Borden. Rebecca Hall is having a blast as the incandescently twatty Abby Borden, but past that actor service, I don't understand the decision to turn a woman who, by most accounts, was an unobjectionable dumpling into a cartoonishly cruel harpy and Paulson is getting at something with Warnos 's unique Antic defiance, I think there is a compassion for this person under the distracting stunt teeth, but Like everything else in Monsters Lizzie season, the sequence and the portrayal aren't given two consecutive seconds to be still and say one thing about one thing. I have no idea whether to recommend this. I do think I am going to recommend to myself that I not review these seasons anymore because it's always the same. Jesus, calm down, write up every time.
Dave
26:02
What is the conceit that brings Warnos into this story?
Sarah
26:07
As far as I have watched, which is to about the halfway point, the uh
Dave
26:10
No
Sarah
26:12
justification they appear to be using is that when she uh when she was working as a sex worker, when she was picked up and asked, you know, small talkishly her name, she would say
Dave
26:18
,
Sarah
26:22
Lizzie
Dave
26:23
Uh okay.
Sarah
26:24
Gordon
Dave
26:24
Got it.
Tara
26:25
I assumed it was like the last season that we watched with the the Ed Geen where they bring in like Psycho and other serial killers that are sort of similar to the story.
Dave
26:33
I also like to be called busy.
Sarah
26:36
Oh
Tara
26:36
I also would like to submit incandescently Twatty as a sticker
Sarah
26:36
my God
Tara
26:40
option, by the way.
Dave
26:40
Oh, okay. Alright. Remind me after the show and I'll put that on the list.
Sarah
26:46
I will do so incandescently.
Dave
26:48
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
26:48
Anyway, like I said, I reviewed it for best evidence. It is in the show notes. There are visual aids, don't worry, they're not as disgusting as some of the actual visuals in the show. But I'd also like to mention that we have a mutual aid vault here at Extra Hot Great. Your fellow listeners put a year of extra, extra hot great club membership in the vault. And if you are in need of it, you get a full extra episode every week, by the way, access to the Discord and much more. So you are in need of it, drop me an email at bunting at TomatoNation. com. I am happy to help And if you'd like to donate a year for your fellow listeners, please do the same. That link will be in the show notes as well. It's anonymous, it's a cinch to set up, and we would really, really love to have you.
Dave
27:34
Alright, coming up on this Friday's extra extra hot grate for our club members will be talking about brothers with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson doing their thing where they're together in the same project I assume this is exactly like true detective. I can tell because in the picture, Woody Harrelson was wearing a tie dye t shirt. If you're interested in that and you were not a member, please go to extra hot great. com slash club. We'll be talking about that and a whole lot more and coming. Soon we will be starting listener game time. So that I think will be the week after that will start. So look forward to that. And then on EHG Prime. In one week's time, we'll be talking about American Horror Story Season 13, the Spookia Season.
Tara
28:17
Mm-hmm.
Dave
28:17
Yeah, scary.
Tara

Dave

New guest
Tara
28:20
Daniel Feinberg, chief TV critic for the Hollywood Reporter.
Dave
28:24
That's right, just booked right before recording. So I forgot to put it in my show notes, but that's exciting!
Tara
28:29
Yep.
Dave
28:36
It is time for the extra hot great cannon presenting this week Sarah D. But dig
Sarah
28:42
Listen, listen, listen. It is tough to pick a single episode of Drunk History to pitch for the canon, and it's tough to pitch any episode of this show effectively, honestly, because the humor really does rely on the visual. In case you are not familiar with the premise of the show, per the Wikipedia entry, in each episode, an inebriated narrator. Joined by host Derek Waters, struggles to recount an event from history while actors enact the narrator's anecdotes and also lip-sync the dialogue. So obviously the success of any given episode or segment rests in no small part on how precisely a given actor in the reenactment can convey every uh slurred place name and juicy booze belch, so it's tough to make the case using only audio, but we'll see how tough when I talk about season five, episode seven, Drunk Mystery Drunk Mystery aired March 6, 2018, and concerns itself with unsolved mysteries. Not just the concept, the show as well. Buckle up for Derek Waters' silent movie imitation of Robert Stack in clip one.
Clip
29:57
So join us tonight as we reopen these brand new historic mysteries as well as a brand new bottle of bourbon. A drunk Mystery
Sarah
30:12
Well done on the music. And for the record, that's not his voice, but he is reenacting Robert Stack wearing a wig that looks like it was from some George Washington sketch in a previous episode. The drunk mysteries in question are the disappearance of Agatha Christie in 1926, the aforementioned D. B. Cooper, and the Circleville Letters. And that's the main reason I think this episode is canonworthy. Its evident fondness for the true crime genre generally and unsolved mysteries and old Bob Stack specifically. The beauty of drunk history, tackling legendary who donuts of the last century, is that it doesn't get bogged down in overly detailed crack pottery. It can't. It's only got about seven minutes to get you through the story, and it's using a drunk ass to do it. Here is a wasted Kyle Mooney giving, actually, what is pretty much the best summation of DB Cooper's enduring cultural appeal I may ever have heard. As Taryn Killam as the reenactment, Cooper spreads the appropriate amount of mustard on taking off his sunglasses, clip two.
Clip
31:17
So once the plane is at 10,000 feet in the air, he straps all the cash to himself, goes to the end of the plane, opens an exit, and he's like Yeah, okay. I'm officially cool
Sarah
31:40
Later, after crashing to the floor of the set, Mooney inadvertently undermines generations of relentless competence copaganda on the part of the FBI as he provides dialogue for the Cooper case agent closing the file, Clip three
Clip
31:56
So after forty-five years of of trying to figure this out, the FBI in 2016 goes. I guess we didn't do it this time. our best I think we gotta say case closed you know what this is what we like to call an unsolved Guy. And then other guy was like, no, unsolved mystery. And it's like, exactly.
Sarah
32:30
And in the Circleville segment, we get more love for the show from segment narrator Georgia Hardstark, clip four.
Clip
32:37
So in 93, everyone's favorite show as a child that scared the ever-loving shit out of us in the best possible way, unsolved mysteries. The best. best comes to Circleville, Ohio to do a story on the letters and the possible murder and what the f is happening. Everyone's like, we couldn't believe this happened here. And then Unsolved Mysteries got a letter from the Circleville letter writer. And it said, forget Circleville, if you guys come to Circleville, you you freakos will pay. Wow. I know I think we should solve this mystery. Alright, so uh what do you think? You know who talks? Kids. You know who listens to kids? Nobody. A bus driver.
Sarah
33:30
From there, the show goes into an unsolved mystery style reenactment of Their theory featuring Vanessa Bayer reenacting the role of victim and suspect Mary Gillespie again, except in the re-reenactment, she has blonde hair. And she is credited as Clarissa Mayer for playing the blonde version. So the abiding nostalgia for unsolved mysteries is one reason. The casting, of course, is another Again, in this deeply visual medium of podcasting, it's hard to describe how well Kirsten Dunce portrays Agatha Christie or how impressive it is that mister Dunst, Jesse Plemens, keeps a straight face when the paperwork described in clip five
Clip
34:13
And he looks inside and there's um an expired license and a piece of paper and they say Agatha Christie. It's called vocal fry. So
Sarah
34:28
It has just as many ease on the prop registration as you heard in Allison Rich 's rendition of Christy's name. And Blemmins has to perform the bits about Vocal Fry and the parts where Rich is cracking herself up so hard she's drooling an old-fashioned down her shirt. It's difficult to convey how funny it is that that notorious identicit sketch of D. B. Cooper has been modified for the episode to look like Terran Killam wearing a pair of Ray Bans drawn by a five-year-old It's hard to explain how perfect it is that Ralph Himmelsbach, the obsessed FBI agent who stuck with the Cooper case for decades, is played by Richard Real. Hey, it's that guy who's best known to me from office space, and as the prison guard who's asked whether he would care to revise his bullshit story in the fugitive. But it's not that difficult to explain why putting Georgia Hardstark, pioneer in the true crime comedy podcast space, on the drunk history couch with a bottle of pink champers, is a perfect choice for this episode And hopefully I've done an okay job explaining, even if you can't see the evidence I'm submitting, that drunk mystery has everything you'd think of when you'd think of the best episodes of the show. Big name actors lip-syncing incomprehensible narration, top comedians literally falling down drunk, burps, swears but that the episode also exemplifies the less obvious ingredients for a successful drunk history episode cocktail confidence in its own formula, an ear for what makes a segment work in a given genre, and deep knowledge of what is parodying. It's hard to do this particular kind of show justice in an audio presentation, and if I roll any more clips, I will risk Dave having a drunk Dave trauma response and voting against it. So I'm gonna let you guys discuss and hope that we will all be raising a glass to Drunk Mysteries' successful induction into the extra hot great cannon.
Tara
36:26
Thank you, Sara. Santiago, you chose this from our list of submissions. Please start us off
Santiago
36:32
Yeah. Uh Sarah, first of all, thank you for that wonderful presentation. I have seen several episodes of Drunk History. First of all, how appropriate is it that a drag queen is commenting on a lip syncing show?
Sarah
36:45
Yeah, no
Tara
36:46
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
36:47
no pressure over here in the pitch seat.
Santiago
36:49
Kirsten Dunce and Jesse Clemens especially nailed the lip syncing. because it's not just the the mouth movements, it's also the the subtle facial expressions that each of them are doing. They did incredible work on that front in my opinion. Where the episode fell flat for me was in the third section, the Ohio Letters one. That felt like the most thin of the three, and it was you know nowhere near on the level of like a D D Cooper mystery. I'm not very familiar with Unsolved Mystery, so I think that uh might be where I was hesitant with the reenactment portion because to my knowledge it's the first time in drunk history that the reenactment actors actually spoke scripted lines. Going into this, I was thinking of voting no, but your argument of it being an homage to to Unsolved Mysteries And that being itself thematic to drunk history um has me reconsidering. I'm currently on the fence and am curious to hear what Dave and Tara have to say I will also point out within the first two minutes of the episode they use a G-slur for Romani people
Sarah
38:02
Oh yeah.
Santiago
38:04
A little boy and his ethnicity has absolutely nothing to do with anything. And I was like, that's that was unnecessary. They could have taken that out.
Sarah
38:11
Yeah, they should have cut that out on the on the rerun, honestly. Like what adds nothing, you're right.
Tara
38:17
Yeah, I mean I assume that's a detail from the original nineteen twenties reporting, but it it's not it's not Germane.
Dave
38:23
Yeah, I don't know.
Tara
38:24
Yeah. Alright, I'll go next. Yeah, I th this is Santiago showing off. He's so young. He doesn't even know what Unsolved Mysteries is.
Dave
38:31
Yeah, when did it start again, Sarah? Do you know off the top of your head?
Sarah
38:34
Unsolved Mysteries, uh
Dave
38:36
Like eighty-four or so?
Sarah
38:36
mid 80s, and I think was it Orson
Dave
38:37
Yeah.
Sarah
38:39
Wells who was the host for a while? Like they
Dave
38:40
Really?
Sarah
38:41
took them a while to get to Robert Stack, too.
Dave
38:42
Oh, okay. The person that was talking about like weirdly kids were into it. It's true because remind me Unsolved Mysteries also dip their toe once in a while in like cryptics and UFO stuff too, right?
Tara
38:55
Mm-hmm.
Dave
38:56
Like the it wasn't just true crime.
Tara
38:57
Right.
Dave
38:58
It was it was basically the time life books as a
Sarah
39:01
Yeah, yeah.
Dave
39:01
Yeah.
Sarah
39:02
No, ghosts, lost
Dave
39:03
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
39:04
twins before you had the internet and could just, you know, Google.
Dave
39:07
Because I have a memory of when the show starts. They sort of give you little vignettes of what's about to happen. I would get excited when it was like, oh fuck, it's the Bigfoot thing or aliens or some weird shit. And the kind of stories in this episode. Sorry, I it's not I know it's not my my turn, but
Tara
39:24
No, go ahead, that's fine.
Dave
39:25
W would be the thing I would like be bummed that that was the segments when I was a kid, but now you're like, ooh, I n I didn't know anything about this Agatha Christie thing. Anyways, that is to say that I just wanted to back up that people of a certain vintage did have a weird fascination with this show that seems to be outside of the demographics that you would assume for it.
Tara
39:44
Yeah, this is Gen X shit for sure. Gen X
Sarah
39:47
Yeah.
Tara
39:47
bullshit, if you will, complimentary
Dave
39:48
Yep.
Sarah
39:49
Yeah. But like during Bigfoot, I would have been in the kitchen reloading the ice cream bowl. Like there was a little something for everyone or for no one.
Tara
39:57
Mm-hmm. Hommage to the extent that they had reenactments that are bad, with people acting badly that you can hear acting badly in bad wigs, like missing their missing their mark, etc. All of that I thought was really funny for that reason like the Circleville letters story the best because it was the smallest stakes one, although someone did go to prison apparently for something he probably didn't do. And then at the end, like Derek Waters just casually offering what is a very likely scenario for who actually did it was sort of a bonus where it's like, well maybe you did solve it. Who knows? We'll never know, because probably everyone in the story is dead now. But there was also a lot to like in the performances as well, both of the narrators and the reenactors. I thought Jesse Plemens was way better than Kirsten Dunst. A lot of times I think them the reenactors like you can tell that they're mouthing along and not speaking. And they're just like overdoing it with the lip syncing, whereas Jesse Plannin's like, it really did seem like those all of that dialogue was actually coming out of him , including when he like burps or whatever.
Santiago
41:13
He was the star of the episode for me.
Tara
41:15
Yeah, but I think they're all very funny and very good and the idea of having this sort of unsolved mysteries frame around it is a smart way to just bring in three stories that otherwise might have been too outside their remit. So this was a great pick. And as soon as we got to the middle one, I was like, oh of course. Like obviously this was the one that Sarah's gonna pitch.
Dave
41:36
Yeah.
Tara
41:37
It's the law, if
Dave
41:39
Sarah out of one to ten, how did they nail the unsolved mysteriosity of it all, do you think?
Sarah
41:45
Overall, or just in the
Dave
41:46
Yeah, overall, just like the the cadence of like the parts that speak directly to unsolved mysteries, like how well did you think they emulated it?
Sarah
41:56
Pretty well.
Dave
41:56
Yeah.
Sarah
41:57
I thought that they did a good homage to the like you hear the music sort of like slowly ramping up in the background in certain segments that I clipped, and that's a
Dave
42:04
Yeah
Sarah
42:06
that's a hallmark of Unsolved Mysteries. The self important Robert Stack narration. I mean n Bless him, truly. Elliot Nest Forever in our hearts, but that sort of like stentorian and like they got the they didn't get the coat. Right? It needed to be a double-breasted trench coat that, unlike Columbo, someone actually ironed. I thought it was good because I thought it shares with unsolved mysteries the fact that like You have to get a lot of information across in a regulation network segment. And they did that efficiently with drunk people.
Tara
42:46
And by the way, just to backtrack, it wasn't Orson Wells, it was Raymond Burke.
Sarah
42:50
Yes, sorry.
Tara
42:50
Proceed.
Sarah
42:51
For some reason I always get those two confused. You're welcome, Raymond Burr.
Dave
42:56
The first segment of him walking through the foggy night was like, Oh, okay, yeah, I got it.
Tara
43:01
Mm-hmm.
Dave
43:02
In the Agatha Christie section, there's a point where she is basically goes to a spa and she's just gonna unwind there while her story in the newspapers plays out, which made me think What if we could get an Agatha Christie murder mystery inside of Road to Wellville?
Tara
43:20
Yeah.
Dave
43:20
How great would that be?
Sarah
43:20
Mm-hmm.
Tara
43:21
Mm-hmm.
Dave
43:22
Absolutely. Mr. Unpronounceable and all those guys. Love it.
Tara
43:26
Yes.
Dave
43:26
My old stools, sir, are gigantic and smell no more than a hot biscuit. Jesse Plum is also the VIP for me, and I just want to highlight this one thing I thought the best actual drunk moment belonged to Kyle Mooney and I clipped it for you.
Clip
43:43
So where is T B Cooper? You tell me. What was that? You tell me? Don't ruin this for America for me.
Dave
44:01
Don't ruin this for America for me. I think that might make it onto the soundboard. Really funny episode. The challenge with drunk history is the same challenge with like a Saturday Night Live or a Kids in the Hall. Like are all the segments good enough to get you over the the threshold of a canon? entry. I think these were all good. I never heard of the Circleville ones, but that didn't stop me from enjoying that. That one had the extra boost of doing the reenactments from the show. Which were stupid and great in that drunk history kind of way. So all three of these hit for me. So let's put it to the vote. Santiago playing the role of Sarah D. Bunting being on the fence and not giving up a hint and of how he's going to vote until it's time for the vote. Well done. A taste of her own medicine. Now it's time to say whether it's canon worthy or not.
Santiago
44:53
I'm convinced. Yes, candy worthy.
Dave
44:55
Fantastic Tar.
Tara
44:57
Yes, for me as well.
Dave
44:58
Me too, so Everybody's dancing. It's Drunk History, Season 5, Episode 7, Drunk Mystery. You are hereby inducted into the extra hot Greek canon.
Clip
45:18
Americans love a winner. Yep. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
45:24
It is time for the winner and loser of the week. Sarah has this week's winner.
Sarah
45:28
Well, I mean I think the winner is the listener because you're gonna play the coop there he is drop, right?
Dave
45:35
Oh my god, how did I forget about that? Jesus Christ, do I still have it?
Tara
45:41
You have you must.
Dave
45:42
I mean, you
Sarah
45:43
You must.
Tara
45:43
You must.
Dave
45:44
think I would
Tara
45:45
Y you'd think
Dave
45:51
have to do that.
Clip
45:56
Take me back to the old school Cause I'm a old fool who's so cool. If you wanna get down, I'ma show you the way. There it is, let me hit you saying Coop there, yes.
Sarah
46:04
Coop, there he is.
Clip
46:05
Coop there, yes.
Sarah
46:06
Coop there he is
Clip
46:07
Coop very yes
Dave
46:11
Been a while. It's been a while.
Sarah
46:12
Yeah.
Dave
46:13
I I feel bad that I let you down there. I that should have been on the soundboard, ready to go.
Tara
46:17
Shameful.
Sarah
46:17
That's okay, uh you knew I would uh force it back in. By any means necessary. I actually have an actual winner, and it's the savant Which was the Apple TV domestic terrorism drama that was yanked from its original September 2025 premiere date after Charlie Kirk's assassination. It has now been scheduled for spring 2027. I said at the end of last year on Best Evidence that I was looking forward to a couple of these. that had been removed for either merger reasons or political reasons. And uh they're both back on the schedule, the ones that I was looking out for. So that's my winner is the savant.
Dave
46:57
And Loser of the Week Tar.
Tara
46:58
Loser of the week is Taylor Frankie Paul. She is departing the secret lives of Mormon Wives citing, quote, disgusting end quote bullying from her co stars, although the rumor is that actually she failed a court ordered drug test related to her domestic violence charges, and that is the actual reason. So who knows, but I mean, I don't know what point there is in the show continuing without its messiest drama vector, but perhaps they will try to soldier on without her. Maybe this is a sign from the universe they should stop.
Dave
47:35
Well, speaking about who knows but I don't know. Do you know what time it is?
Tara
47:41
I came down.
Dave
47:54
Welcome back to Game Time. This is the second of the season. Our scores are Tara with one, defending champion Sarah D. Bunting, so looking to get on the board, and Value Guest also looking to get on that board. Today we're playing the return of the TVnepo Babies from Meredith, who earns herself a free shirt of their choosing from the EHG store at thrumethods. com. In the return of the T V Nepo Babies, you will be given the names of two T V characters. The actors who play them are real life parent and child. From those two character names, you must give me four pieces of information. The two actors, and the two shows on which they appear. Total maximum four points. Keep in mind you only get one guest, Sarah, debunting. So you have two ways to tackle this.
Sarah
48:43
Thank you.
Dave
48:45
Run the board right away, guess as many as you can for a maximum of four, or if you just have no idea what's going on. Ask for the hint, I will give you the TV shows in question, after which you have to give me the actor's name maximum two points. Make sense?
Sarah
49:00
Yeah.
Dave
49:00
Let's get the steel meal situation, please, sir.
Tara
49:03
Thank you, Dave. Sarah has one. I have eight. Valued guest has Eric's meal, so one.
Dave
49:08
All right, let's throw it a piggy to see who is good
Tara
49:09
That rolls over.
Dave
49:13
first.
Clip
49:16
We will start with Sarah.
Dave
49:17
All right, Sarah, our value guest, then Tara. We've got 30 questions, zero Grossworth Equalizer Challenge Zones today, in the interest of time. Are we ready to play Return of the TVnepo Babies?
Tara
49:30
Yeah
Sarah
49:30
Yes
Dave
49:30
Here's an example for you to get you on your way.
Santiago
49:30
Yes
Dave
49:33
Your two characters are Jed Bartlett and Charlie Harper. I want to know the first actor and the first show that actor was on, playing Jed Bartlett, and then the second actor and the second show that Charlie Harper is on. Anybody throw that answer out there. Who we got?
Santiago
49:49
The West Wing
Dave
49:51
Yep.
Santiago
49:51
and Martin Sheen
Dave
49:52
You got it. And
Sarah
49:53
To an half men
Dave
49:55
And
Sarah
49:55
and Charlie
Dave
49:56
alright, look at these shy people.
Sarah
49:56
Sheen.
Dave
49:57
They don't want to answer it. Yes, correct. Alright, let's start the game off properly. Sarah D. Bunting. Lee Ray Bon. Joe March. Those are your two characters. From that, figure out the actors and the shows involved. If you don't know, you're totally clueless. You can ask for a hint, and I will give you the shows.
Sarah
50:19
Um well
Dave
50:21
Keep in mind, maximum of four, maximum of two after the hint.
Sarah
50:26
Okay, so Lee Ray Bon and Jo March, you said
Dave
50:29
Joe J O March
Sarah
50:32
J -O, yes. Yeah, okay, so that's um Ethan Hawk and the Lowdown is the first one, and then uh I don't know her name, but let's guess
Dave
50:43
Give me the show
Sarah
50:45
Little Women
Dave
50:47
Okay, so one piece left if you can get it. Keep in mind, Nepo babies.
Sarah
50:51
Lilyhawk?
Dave
50:52
Hmm.
Tara
50:54
Good guess.
Sarah
50:54
Oh
Dave
50:54
That's close.
Sarah
50:55
well.
Dave
50:55
Four letters. Mayahawk.
Santiago
50:57
nej
Tara
50:58
My

Santiago, um start start drafting
Santiago
01:17:06
Easy
Sarah
01:17:08
I don't know. I mean, I'm gonna kick myself because I do know the actor, I think, and I actually don't know the show either, so let's just guess um that it's uh Oh my god, what was the name of that thing? Uh, Handmaid's Tale.
Dave
01:17:28
Still got the actor, the Nepo baby here.

Dave
01:18:04
That's not.
Santiago
01:18:04
Yeah, that doesn't help.
Dave
01:18:07
Okay, so I'm handing it over for our third tiebreaker. Take it away, Santiago.
Santiago
01:18:14
This is exciting.
Dave
01:18:15

Dave
01:18:47

Santiago
01:18:51
Your two shows are The Newsroom and The Deputy.
Sarah
01:18:57
The newsroom and the deputy Uh deputy. Um Chief Marshal Simon Fry on the was on the newsroom, which I did not watch. Fry.
Dave
01:19:12
The stakes have never been higher.
Sarah
01:19:14
I don't know either of these. Is one of the oh my god, what is that guy's name? Fucking Flat Horton. Jeff Daniels? Is that one of them? No? Okay, then I won't know the other one, so
Dave
01:19:28
