Adult Swim’s new 12-minute live-action sketch show The Terrors Of Jordan Mendoza puts its titular star in such situations as “sentenced for manslaughter by a very strange judge” and “marooned at a weird co-worker’s dinner party”; we tell you if it’s scary good or just scary good. After delivering judgment on the last TWO episodes’ Ask Ask EHG questions, we tackle your latest Qs for us, like which skills we could contribute to a very useless emergency response team and what a show called Only Creatures In The Building would be about. Sarah pitches a memorable Degrassi slogan to the Tiny Catchphrase Canon. Then, after naming the week’s Not Quite Winners and Losers, we’re imagining how various TV relatives would fare on Family Feud. Sit down with your Asian wife and enjoy our latest episode together!

You're about to enter a realm. A realm of the desire, dread, fantasy, dreams and nightmares, hopes and horrors.
Dave
00:17
This is the Extra Extra Hot Great Podcast, episode four hundred twenty-nine for the set September 19, 2026 weekend. I am Sternly Affectionate Judge David T. Cole, and I'm here with very standard dinner party, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:37
No performing arts of any kind.
Dave
00:39
And poetry slams scab, Tar Ariano.
Tara
00:42
Don't inflate that rat. Welcome to Extra Extra Hot grate for another weekend. Also joining us today. We don't normally have guests, but the landscaper who is mowing the lawn outside is going to be here with us for some time as well.
Sarah
01:08
Yeah, we've got a weed whacker in Brooklyn as well.
Dave
01:11
Yeah. Well,
Sarah
01:12
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:12
usually can scrub a melt, but it's really loud today for some reason.
Tara
01:16
They're somehow mowing our lawn, which we don't have. Uh anyway.
Dave
01:20
Yeah. It's it's it's our neighbor and he has a patch of grass about the size of my fist, yet it takes him about forty-five minutes to deal with it.
Tara
01:27
But never mind all that. We are delighted that you're here with us. We're sorry for the noise if you hear it, and we are here to tell you about The Terrors of Jordan Mendoza comedy writer-performer Jordan Mendoza invites TV viewers to watch the night terrors that visit him when he's asleep. Scenarios that take place in such chilling settings as a bank branch, a reality dating show, the cubicle next to an awkward coworker, an abandoned hospital, and a 35-year-old's birthday party The show was created by Mendoza, whose past writing credits include Overcompensating and Chad Powers. The first episode aired on Adult Swim at Midnight September 13th or 14th, depending on how you regard when midnight actually is, we got access to all eight episodes. Of the first season, but we'll try to be vague about the ones that are still to come. Let's do the chen check-in. Sarah, should our listeners watch The Terrors of Jordan Mendoza?
Sarah
02:24
If this kind of show is your thing, this I think will definitely be your thing. I laughed. So yes.
Dave
02:30
Yeah, I would say if you like Tim Robinson's so I think you should leave. There is a lot of similarities here.
Tara
02:38
There's no so.
Dave
02:40
What
Tara
02:40
You called it so I think you should leave like it was so I married an axe murderer. It's not
Sarah
02:46
I mean, I shrank the Mendoza.
Tara
02:48
I agree. I thought this was very funny. Dave, let's get into it. Do you remember what content from the trailer convinced you to make this your show you were into for the fall?
Dave
02:58
Yeah, the trailer was just pretty much the uh I have a Asian wife skit from the first episode, which
Tara
03:04
Uh-huh. Good.
Dave
03:06
It's probably a highlight of the uh of the beginning part of the series. And I would say I watched three very short episodes, right? So these are Adult Swim episodes.
Tara
03:14
Yeah.
Dave
03:14
I Until it got to episode four. I don't think there's real dud in them, but episode four is probably the weakest one of the first chunk of them. That one wasn't so great. So
Tara
03:23
Okay.
Dave
03:23
it's got a pretty high hit rate. You know, we're talking
Tara
03:25
Mm-hmm.
Dave
03:26
seventies, which is good for a skit show, I would say.
Tara
03:28
Yeah. First of all, just so the comedy community doesn't yell at us, sketch, not skit Sarah, when did the show win you over?
Dave
03:36
You can't see it, but I'm making the biggest jerky jerky motion right now.
Sarah
03:39
Yeah.
Tara
03:40
Listen
Dave
03:40
Gives a fuck.
Sarah
03:42
I think it was the the Asian wife Skit like, I thought it was going on too long, but then it sort of came back around when he gets in the Uber and it's like, oh, that sounds like a Filipina Filipino name. Done like my what? I mean, just the
Tara
03:59
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
03:59
the timing of the jokes and the sketches also making jerk off motion
Tara
04:06
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
04:06
really struck me as well thought out and like They'd run through them a bunch of times. There were a couple in the first two or three that were like maybe a little too long, but then there were always good payoffs. We got you a letter from Hogwarts and you've been admitted. Meltdown at the birthday party
Tara
04:22
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
04:23
was very funny. Him screaming, shut the fuck up, Marissa.
Tara
04:24
Yep.
Sarah
04:26
Like There was just a timing to the lines that like they weren't throwaway, but they were confident enough in the pacing that I was one over.
Dave
04:38
Yeah, I agree with that. The timing of everything in each sketch slash skit was very considered and I think it pays off a lot.
Sarah
04:46
Yes
Dave
04:47
It's not a joke dense sort of show. It's not 30 rock as far as How quickly they're coming, so it is all about the build-up and the payoff for each one.
Tara
04:56
Mm-hmm.
Dave
04:57
Can I just say one of them that was like made me laugh out loud or so stupid? So I think it's the first episode. There is a courtroom skit.
Tara
05:05
Yeah, it's the first episode.
Dave
05:06
Yep.
Tara
05:06
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
05:07
Mm-hmm.
Dave
05:07
With uh Bud Mill, what's his name?
Tara
05:09
Fred Melamed.
Dave
05:10
Fred Mill and thank you.
Tara
05:12
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
05:12
Larry, but Bellman.
Dave
05:14
Fantastic character actor. You've seen him everywhere, Lady Dynamite
Tara
05:16
Yes, yep.
Dave
05:17
et al. And he plays this judge. By the nineteen fifties sort of courtroom treatment, you get the idea he's a very, very hard judge, very stern, and his punishment is that Jordan 's character has to get fourteen hugs and kisses from him. No, sorry, from the nearest judge, which happens to be him as the bailiff.
Tara
05:35
Yeah. Mm-hmm
Dave
05:37
tells him and everybody in the court is freaking out and he just gets 14 hugs and kisses and then the payoff after that stupid bit is that the title that used to say uh
Tara
05:48
County courthouse
Dave
05:49
That county courthouse just pulls back a bit, just says weird county courthouse. And that was it. I made it laugh out loud. It was so dumb.
Sarah
05:56
And the judge has like the sock garters, like
Tara
05:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
05:59
Yeah.
Sarah
06:00
You could just tell that like there's kind of nothing on under the robe. He's like, you know, pajamas or boxers or whatever.
Tara
06:06
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
06:06
And like he turns around each time. I mean, again, considered
Tara
06:11
Yep.
Dave
06:11
Yeah
Sarah
06:11
as to the timing.
Tara
06:12
Yes, and you know, anytime we talk about a sketch show this comes up, but it just again highlights how uh sloppy and flabby and bloated SNL is because every other sketch show if If SNL is all you know about sketch, you're missing a whole world of really great comedy because so much of what makes it good is tight writing, good editing. and that you get in and out in the shortest amount of time possible to exhaust the premise.
Dave
06:41
Yeah. I mean Saturday Night Live just exists in its own space and can never be killed.
Tara
06:46
Yes
Sarah
06:46
Yeah.
Dave
06:47
You know, so you just gotta deal with that. Saturday Night Live, yes, in a theoretical universe where that talent is making sketch shows that they have time to deliver on rather than having to, you know, sp pull it all together in five days or however they do it, yeah, of course it's gonna be more considered and funnier
Tara
06:58
Mm -hmm. Yeah.
Dave
07:02
and w is allowed to breathe.
Tara
07:04
Yeah
Dave
07:05
That's not the reality we l we live in, for sure.
Tara
07:07
I suppose. So usually a sketch show I would say makes stars as opposed to stars making sketch shows with the arguable exceptions of Kroll Show and Inside Amy Schumer. Like Key and Peel, no one knew who they were really before that show came along. How did you feel Jordan acquits himself here as sort of the center of the show? Dave.
Dave
07:26
I thought he was great. He has this sort of resting befuddlement face
Tara
07:31
Yeah.
Dave
07:31
throughout the whole series.
Tara
07:32
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:32
That's sort of like the role he is playing.
Sarah
07:33
Uh-huh.
Dave
07:35
Let's say compare it with Tim Robinson, who is always sort of that plus Agent of Chaos plus Plaster Scene Man. Whereas
Tara
07:43
Yeah
Dave
07:44
Jordan
Sarah
07:44
Uh-huh.
Dave
07:45
here just sort of has this mode where he is more often than not the straight person in the sketch. So the dynamic is different, but he plays his role really well. There is a lot of the times he's just like The voice or something like that does this whole skit where they go to an abandoned hospital and it just all this weird shit is happening and he's just sort of the cameraman there
Tara
08:07
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:07
And it works there. When he's the adult who gets the Hogwarts letter that is supposed to be a Christ uh supposed to be a birthday gag gift from his family and he doesn't realize it's not real and he starts going off on everybody, telling everybody what he really thinks he's gonna be fucking off the hard cog for. any moment now.
Tara
08:23
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:24
Including uh after he realizes it offering to suck Haggard's dick in order to make it a reality, which I don't like So I think he is well suited for what he's writing, which he like obviously he should be because he's writing it and he's acting it, so he knows his craft.
Tara
08:41
Yeah, sure.
Sarah
08:43
I would say that he is not vain in two senses of that word that are important to this material and this kind of show. In the first way, is the Hogwarts sketch. He is willing to be this completely delusional Potter adult. and it plays really well, but then in other scenes where hi a character that he is playing is not really driving it and is not like getting the quote good lines or whatever, he's willing to step back and have the scene be what it is and have somebody else be at the center. And I think that's key, that he's not sort of sucking up material for himself, like the poetry slam. She gets up to the bike, she's like, welcome to my world of piss and as somebody who like had to go to Poetry Slams as part of her major in the early nineties. This was like just bad enough, like extremely well observed and well-timed in its crappy timing. I really quite admired the commitment to that slam sketch. It was a little too long, but I also felt seen. F unfortunately.
Dave
09:52
Yeah. And actually that one I thought was the most I think so I think you should leave esque
Tara
09:59
Yes.
Dave
09:59
It starts off in the office. There's just like a person everybody else thinks is weird, and she's hosting this poetry slam. Oh no, she's hosting a party at her house that turns out to be a poetry slam. But then the poetry slam union comes and busts her for unauthorized poetry slams.
Sarah
10:13
Mm-hmm.
Dave
10:14
Just stupid premise like that.
Tara
10:16
Yes
Dave
10:16
But yeah, he's he's good there too.
Tara
10:18
And it stars Kate Berlanti, who is also in, I think you should leave, as the person who bought Jim Davis's house, the creator of Garfield.
Dave
10:20
Mm-hmm. And there's sketches I think that he's not even in as well, or very, very little. There is a sketch where Steve Buscemi, who is sort of the rod searling searling of all this He is actually in a lot of this show, they really got him for quite a bit.
Tara
10:40
Yeah.
Dave
10:40
And one of the ones he's in, he gets a Terminal diagnosis, and then for the rest of the sketch, he's trying to figure out what his last words are gonna be, right? You know, he looks up Oscar Wilde, he's going through all this stuff, and then you know, eventually there's this payoff for this, which was really stupid. So I think you're right, Sarah, that he is not banging here. And it works.
Tara
11:00
Yes.
Dave
11:01
Yeah.
Tara
11:01
And and the fact that it's Steve Buscemi getting this sort of role, the only other person who I think isn't every episode, at least of what we've seen so far. We should just give a shout out to like Steve Buscemi's later in life comedic juggernaut status. Because from this to thirty rock to the movies of Adam Sandler, which like that wasn't that later, I guess
Dave
11:23
Yeah.
Tara
11:23
He was like in his forties then, but still Fantasmas, playing Q and
Dave
11:27
Yeah.
Sarah
11:27
Mm-hmm.
Tara
11:27
Fantasmas.
Sarah
11:28
There's also the fact that he is like physically coming to resemble John Waters in a way that I think is like
Dave
11:33
Did you?
Sarah
11:35
salutary for projects like this. I don't I don't know why. Like, I bet John Waters would have done it too, honestly.
Dave
11:41
Yeah. I like that he has the jobs I think that um Bill Murray is losing out on because nobody wants to work with Bill Murray.
Tara
11:51
I hope that's true
Dave
11:52
You know what I mean?
Sarah
11:52
Mm-hmm.
Dave
11:53
Like he has a sort of late career
Sarah
11:53
Yes, totally.
Dave
11:55
just doing whatever the fuck I wantiness and because I got more, you know, more money than I need kind of uh
Tara
12:00
Mm-hmm.
Dave
12:01
too.
Tara
12:01
But although the fact that he was in that last word sketch did make me think we might lose him soon, and I would got very sad.
Dave
12:07
Hm.
Tara
12:07
But um other than that
Dave
12:08
He looks okay.
Tara
12:09
He does, he does.
Dave
12:09
I mean, yeah, yeah.
Tara
12:10
He's not I mean, he's my mother's age. He's not that old. This was a joy. Great pick to be into, Dave.
Dave
12:15
Yeah, thanks.
Sarah
12:16
Mm-hmm.
Dave
12:16
Yeah, I I enjoyed it. And again, eleven minutes of your time to figure out if you like it or not. So
Sarah
12:21
Yeah, for sure.
Tara
12:22
Exactly.
Dave
12:32
Well, well, well It is time for everybody's favorite segment. You ask the questions, we answer them is ask E H G. Alright, let's get into it. We have two episodes to render judgment on for Ask Ask EHG. So we are going to spin the wheel of judgment. Shut it's Sarah. No, wait.
Clip
13:08
Thanks, Lady
Dave
13:09
It's Tara.
Tara
13:11
Next lady Before I get into this, I also forgot to add, for all you dirty cord cutters, if you're looking to how you can watch the terrors of Jordan Mendoza, it will
Dave
13:16
Uh-huh.
Tara
13:20
start streaming on HBO Max September 21st.
Dave
13:23
Yeah, and the first episode's on YouTube already.
Tara
13:26
Oh, okay, great.
Dave
13:26
Yeah, and we d wait a sec, I gotta close this out now. No, we've reintroduced the lead topic.
Tara
13:35
All right, Ask Ask EHG.our question from episode 427 came from C Kent, who wrote, The FBI last week at the time eased up on its hiring prohibitions against people who have been charged with Hiring prostitutes, stealing from work, or bestiality. Create the next great CBS procedural. Our winning answers this time are both kind of long, so only one runner-up on this one. From Sister Knight who wrote, It's a shame the beast in me is taken, not bad.
Dave
14:04
That's good. Let's get first sticker.
Tara
14:06
Okay, uh, and but our winner is Seth, or co-winner, I guess, who writes, having
Dave
14:06
Okay.
Tara
14:11
canceled two FBI spin-offs last season, true in parentheses, CBS needs a steady hand for their next iteration, and it sounds like Mike Judge had the most affordable and IP laden pitch, starring Ron Livingston, reprising the iconic Peter from Office Space, captured by the FBI after stealing millions from the workplace fractions of a penny at a time He now heads their cybercrime division. Martin Starr returns as Bertram Gilfoyle from Silicon Valley, Tech Wiz, and second in command. Dale Gribble doesn't seem like an obvious choice to work for the government, but they agreed to clear his numerous solicitation charges in exchange for his surveillance prowess. I don't know if that's canon, but I have not watched every episode. Finally, Beavis is also there. Don't ask what he did. Somehow already airing right now in your uncle's house. FBI back in the office. I forgot to say Dale Gribbles from King of the Hills. So good job, Seth. Moving on to episode 428. This question came from Jovial Gent, who wrote, Replace Briscoe with Lumiere. What partner would you pair him with and what case would you have them solve? And to everyone who didn't know offhand what that meant and didn't care to look it up Jerry O'Rebach played both Lenny Briscoe in Law and Order and Lumiere the Candlestick in the original Beauty and the Beast from 1990, whatever that was. David Silver is our winner who wrote Père Lumière with an affable English lady in the form of one Angela Lansbury, aka Jessica Fletcher, aka Mrs. Potts. For their first case, they have to determine who flattened Senor Sombrero by infiltrating the infamous Hi Hat Club. Lumiere is French, pretending to be English by dressing up as a bowler hat misses Potts is English, pretending to be French by dressing up as a beret. High jinx and high hats ensue. There's no end to their cavalcade of crime-solving capabilities, their joyful duets, or their winking quips and asides to the audience Fridays on CBS. And if you want to see a version of this In reality, Jerry Orbach was on Murder She Wrote at least once, if not more times, playing multiple characters.
Sarah
16:16
Mm-hmm
Tara
16:18
So look that up on the streaming platform of your choice.
Dave
16:21
I have a question.
Tara
16:21
Yes, Dave? Mm-hmm.
Dave
16:22
Can he wear hats as a candlestick?
Tara
16:25
Well, he does a bit with like a candle snuffer.
Dave
16:28
Right, but that's metal.
Tara
16:29
Well, yeah, I guess not.
Dave
16:31
Yeah.
Tara
16:31
I don't know. He yeah I don't think he's lit all the time. I think he does bits with his f flames
Dave
16:35
Lit all the time.
Tara
16:37
as well.
Dave
16:37
Smoke weed every day Alright, fine.
Tara
16:41
Anyway, good job everybody. DM Dave for your stickers.
Dave
16:43
Yes, please do it. Alright, Sister Knight has our first question. You wake up tomorrow on Widow's Bay and you have to defeat one villain of the week or you're going in the sacrifice chair. Who is your first choice villain to take on and who is your last?
Tara
16:59
My first choice to take on is the boogeyman from episode eight, which we recently inducted into the canon on the main show when Eve was here a couple weeks ago. The boogeyman is relentless, but he also is pretty slow. Which I also am, so I think it
Dave
17:13
I was gonna say real unless and slow describe somebody else, I know
Tara
17:17
Well, listen, that's why
Dave
17:19
Yeah. Yeah like you're sort of near the gas station, you sort of bend down, you're like and you just give him like just one moment, please, gesture. I need a sec.
Tara
17:29
I'm just saying Walking quickly, I would get further than the Boogeyman.
Dave
17:32
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.
Tara
17:33
The Boogeyman is slow. So that's my first choice. Last choice, the party planning author Lucy Force, who might be the actual devil. That's also from the other Patricia feature episode, episode three, Beach Reads.
Sarah
17:46
My first choice was Willie the Clown, who seemed like the most straightforward slash least magical with a K in terms of combat. Plus I'd be the most motivated to defeat him, I would say. Last choice is the fog. It's a fog. It's just too hard to manage. Dave.
Dave
18:02
Yeah, I went with the clown from the break basement crawl space as the first one. I think if Loonie Tunes has taught me anything is that I can Battle him with a full bottle of seltzer. Turning the tables on him, the sheer force of the carbonated water will throw him back
Sarah
18:17
Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:18
My final boss is then I might get a satellite-based internet ISP so I can slay the worst monster of all, internet unavailability. Tomka has our next question. What's the elevator pitch for the show Only Creatures in the Building? Which is something that we accidentally said at some point in the last couple weeks. Sarah.
Sarah
18:38
It's an animated series about everything that lives or is undead in or near the Arconia Family Vault in Greenwood Cemetery in beautiful Brooklyn, New York. Dave.
Dave
18:49
It's various personal retirement projects from all the monsters that escaped at the end of Cabin in the Woods.
Sarah
18:58
Uh-huh.
Tara
18:58
Mine is a children's television workshop show about puppet animals who live in a high-rise apartment building.
Dave
19:04
Hmm. Alright, Seth, if you linger on Netflix while nothing is playing, it'll start a screensaver and cycle images of other things you could be watching. Congrats, you get to slip in one absurd picture to appear. 001 % of the time and make people sound bug nuts describing it. What image are you choosing? I think it would be funny. You know that meme called Limmy Waking Up?
Tara
19:27
Mm-hmm
Dave
19:28
I'm gonna put it in chat and we'll put it in the show notes, but as soon as you as soon as you see it, you'll be like, oh yeah, that so I just mocked it up. So it's just this guy, if for some reason he looks extremely English to me, like he's gonna have an English breakfast in about two hours from this photo, but he's just like being
Sarah
19:41
Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:45
woken up in his bed, he's just got to his face like, oh, what's going on? Anyways, still watching over that and there's your answer.
Tara
19:51
Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:51
Sorry.
Tara
19:51
Mine is my cake that I bought for the Gilded Age finale party where I had the store person who is a professional just write the Gilded Age at the top and then I thought I can draw things with icing myself from the Gilded Age.
Dave
20:07
Yeah.
Tara
20:07
And I did not have the fine control with the materials. I mean I know it is a poor craftsman who blames his tools, but nevertheless, I tried to draw a clock. It was completely unrecognizable. And then I tried to draw the horse that runs over the guy with a cart in the penultimate episode of the season, I believe.
Dave
20:24
Yeah.
Tara
20:24
And both of them just look insane. So it would be my a picture of uh that cake. And I'm gonna I know I posted it on Blue Sky, so I'll t I'll I'll dig it up and put that in the show notes. Sarah
Sarah
20:34
A row of expressionless counter people at a Wendy's
Dave
20:38
Okay. DJ Empirical. In World War II, the average age of the combat soldier was twenty-six How old was he in Vietnam? And I think this was him trying to set up a gotcha because it's not nun na na
Sarah
20:50
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:51
nineteen. It's t 22. 8 to
Tara
20:53
Yeah.
Dave
20:54
22. 8. Hardcastle was off by almost three
Tara
20:56
Wow
Dave
20:57
Three years. It's changed my whole world outlook.
Tara
20:59
Sloppy
Dave
21:00
Now we gotta change the thing.
Sarah
21:01
I thought the gotcha was, how old was that combat soldier from World War II in Vietnam?
Dave
21:08
Uh-huh.
Sarah
21:08
And I was like, I don't know, 47?
Dave
21:11
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
21:11
When in Vietnam?
Dave
21:12
Do you think though that soldier from World War Two is actually going to be in Vietnam or is he just like a tourist during the war he got stuck there?
Tara
21:19
There's probably a couple, generals
Sarah
21:20
Oh, yeah
Dave
21:21
Yeah, okay.
Sarah
21:22
If, for instance, they came back from World War II and their partner in their dentist office had forced them out so they had to stay in the army, like my grandfather.
Tara
21:32
Oh dear,
Dave
21:32
Gosh.
Sarah
21:33
Well.
Dave
21:33
DPOV16. I love the way Dave says boogie man. Alright. I wonder if he says boogie the same way for all things. Boogie or is it just boogeyman? So Dave, please say the following things. I want to put on my my my my my boogie shoes. Get up and boogie, get down and boogie boogie boogie. They're you happy now? You made me dance like a monkey? Elsbeth. We're assembling the world's most useless, highly specialized emergency response team. What extr goddamn you what extremely specific Usually pointless skill can you contribute to the cause, Tara?
Tara
22:12
Uh identifying wigs, obviously, Dave.
Dave
22:14
Yeah, HTML and CSS support. Sarah.
Sarah
22:18
Anyone on the team got anxiety hiccups? I can knock those out for ya.
Dave
22:22
Right, great. If you got a case for us, let us know. That should be that should have been the assassy issue What case can we solve easily with our combined powers? Alright, Mill Snack. What 2026 movies should have alternate endings a la clue and what endings should they be? Sarah, you're first.
Sarah
22:40
Alternate the Odyssey ending number one. Odysseus' arrival home smash cuts to a montage of Bachelorette Row ceremonies that take place in a gladiator style amphitheater Odysseus is never picked, despite returning in multiple disguises, and is forced to sabotage a one-on-one dates fireworks show to get things back on track. Alternate Theodice Ending Number 2. In the final bowstring contest, the bow is replaced by a 5x5 Expedite Bookcase from IKEA. He is able to complete the bookcase, but in the proud fuck it, once we get books on it, it'll stabilize itself tradition, Vikia assembler's past and future. He fails to secure it to a wall and it falls on him, crushing him Alternate theodysse ending number three. Odysseus bursts into Penelope in Telemachus' quarters all it me, the guy who was gone for twenty years. Telemachus, playing Candy Crush, barely reacts. Penelope, frogging that goddamn tapestry for the umpteenth time, only manages a Hey Hun. There's a plate of casserole on the pass through. Odysseus gives the camera a tiny shrug, roll credits.
Tara
23:46
My movie is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Without spoiling said movie, the alternate endings could be a different mix of characters survives. There's another layer to the frame story, and Little Death is seen in a different setting. That's all I can say, but I highly recommend the movie. It is a wild time. Dave.
Dave
24:08
I also did the Odyssey, but it's five different versions of the Siren song during the Odyssey, and it's everything from contemporary to the ancient Greeks all the way up to Luther Vandross.
Sarah
24:20
Hmm. Okay.
Dave
24:21
Drydendon has our last question. There is a scene in the Vicar of Dibley in which Don French sticks her head into a working chocolate fountain. What is one impulsive act you just can't resist? Mind is saying, ooh, big strooch. Whenever a dog does a downward dog stretch. Oh, big strooch. Sarah.
Sarah
24:44
Anyone bent over at the waist that I am walking past
Dave
24:49
Uh-huh.
Sarah
24:49
will hear a fart noise, big or small.
Dave
24:50
Oh phew. I was going places. Tar.
Sarah
24:54
No, not
Tara
24:55
I mean, probably the most impulsive thing I regularly do is run yellow lights.
Sarah
24:56
that place.
Tara
25:00
Sorry, I couldn't think of anything that's lame.
Dave
25:02
Wow, that is lame.
Tara
25:03
I know. That's why I said it.
Dave
25:04
All right
Sarah
25:04
Uh-huh.
Dave
25:05
Seth also has her Ask Ask EHG question for this week. You've been hired for the revival of Underoos. And are in charge of the Peak TV era line. What properties are you licensing and what are the designs? So this is recently was a topic on the Discord. where somebody thought underoos were just another name for underwear and was talking about underoos with adults and it was a whole thing it was a big education for that person so anyways let's deal with some underoos
Sarah
25:33
Uh-huh. They're in jail now.
Dave
25:35
Yet they're in jail.
Sarah
25:36
Sorry.
Dave
25:38
So under Ruse from the Peak TV era and Tara, make sure they know what peak TV era means because this is uh
Sarah
25:44
Yeah
Dave
25:45
point of contention with you.
Tara
25:46
Oh, the peak TV era
Dave
25:48
As opposed to Prestige T
Tara
25:50
Yeah, peak TV just means the point where, like as with peak oil, production will ramp up and up and up and up until it reaches a point where it starts to fall again.
Dave
25:51
V Yes.
Tara
26:00
And we are in the post-peak era of television
Dave
26:03
We are tobogganing down that hill.
Tara
26:03
with The number of shows that produce episodes has been dropping steadily by about 20
Dave
26:09
Yes.
Tara
26:11
plus percent a since 20 starting in 2023.
Dave
26:15
Okay.
Tara
26:15
2022 was the peak year.
Dave
26:17
Okay. So you got an answer for that? Go to our Discord. Put your answer in the Ask Ask E S G channel, or you can answer on the episode page right on our site, extrahotgreat. com. It is time for the tiny candid presenting, it is Sarah.
Sarah
26:34
Uh, thank you, Dave. I had forgotten so much about today's tiny cannon prospect before going back to review it for my pitch. I of course remembered All the Way with Stephanie K as an iconic student body president campaign slogan from Degrassi Junior High, but I didn't remember that it made its debut in the series debut of the show When the aforementioned Stephanie K, Nicole Stoffman, returns to school for grade eight with a new get turdy in the girls' washroom before class image. And with the new name, because her parents have split up, she lives with her mom and her brother Arthur, a newly minted grade sevener, lives with their dad. So Stephanie can distance herself from Broomhead Arthur by shedding their last name, Kobalewski, in favor of the more rhyme-friendly Kay. I had forgotten that last bit about the Hollywoodizing of her name, to be honest. I had not forgotten just how hard Stephanie goes with the crop tops, micro minis, disco blue eyeshadow, and hair teasing It is so much luck for first period homeroom, bless her heart. I had also not forgotten the icky response of the Degrassi boys to Stephanie's more revealing fits. Even characters we would come to regard fondly as they bumbled through their digressales are immediate and complete scumbags. kissing on Stephanie's arm, Wolf whistling at her in the library, the works, and the corny cluelessness of the approach of these, you know, thirteen year olds. Doesn't mean the viewer doesn't feel a little afraid for Stephanie, who thinks she can control the power that her looks have, but is probably mistaken. And I had not forgotten the implication that Stephanie's campaign is basically vote for the girl who puts out, or that Stephanie's actually kind of refreshingly cynical, say whatever to get elected kisses for vote strat threatens her friendship with conservative bestie Vula, Nikki Camini, not least because aspiring playa Joey Jeremiah, Pat Mastroian, has squeezed Vula out as Stephanie's campaign manager. But in my memory, All the Way with Stephanie K was a much more distinct slogan that drew more explicit opprobrium from adults The fact is it sort of gets buried in We Want a Kiss chanting, and the adults seem largely oblivious to Stephanie's attire or heavily interactive retail campaigning, but here's a clip anyway, clip one.
Clip
29:05
Oh brother's kids! Oh brother kiss! Ask your dog to Michael chip. Red ore! Red order! Alright, see it everyone! Take it easy! Should be out in a minute. Joey located. Avoid sector 2C. Repeat, avoid sector 2C. Message received. We'll avoid Sector 2C We want a kiss! Oh claims that we kiss a kiss! We want a kiss! Kissing's got nothing to do with the campaign. It's just for the election. It's politics. Give people what they want.
Sarah
29:42
That walkie-talkie bit in the middle was Arthur and Siluk Saisanasi as Yik, strategizing about avoiding Joey so they don't get stuffed in broom closets again. And I'd also misremembered how poorly others in the Zit remedy are coming off in this episode. Mainly Neil Hope's Wheels working the crowd with fantasies about Stephanie in and out of a bikini. But even if it's not quite the same quote in text as it is in my memory, all the way with Stephanie Kay is worthy of a spot in the tiny catchphrase canon, because it's a symbol of Degrassi's skill at illuminating the difficult fraught situations that faced kids that age, that could very quickly get out of control, or whose unexpected consequences could boomerang, and of the grace the show always tried to give its girls and young women, even in their cringiest hours. For that reason, and because it can double as a tiny frosted lipstick cannon entry, if necessary, I hope you will participate in the Democratic process and vote for all the way with Stephanie K without my threatening to kiss either of you.
Tara
30:51
Thank you, Sarah. I'll go first because you're talking about both of our youths with this one. This is one of the more memorable lines from Degrassi across all the whole franchise and you sort of forget that includes hundreds of episodes at this point because there was also the next generation, which is
Sarah
31:09
Yeah, mm-hmm
Tara
31:12
canon included some of the the characters from the first iteration, blah blah blah. But this I thought stood out. I agree with you that what makes it the most important is that it illustrates the grace that the show had for its female characters. This could have been a much darker If it were a different kind of show, this could have been it taken a much darker turn.
Sarah
31:33
Mm-hmm
Tara
31:34
We Wanna Kiss is just sort of like cute. You know, I know they're only in grade eight and we don't really think of Anyone expecting that they're gonna actually go all the way with Stephanie K orb just because they're nerdy Canadian students they think all the way is a kiss, you know?
Sarah
31:50
Yeah, yeah.
Tara
31:51
I do think she's one of the the more memorable characters and it is because of this and because of her whole bit. In my heart and in my mind forever, all the way with Stephanie Kay Anyone who is our age and especially is Canadian will know what you mean when you say it, I think. Dave.
Dave
32:08
Wait a sec. So you're not skeeved out by all the way of Stephanie K given everything that the boys say during this three, four minute bit of the show?
Tara
32:18
I
Dave
32:19
Cause I was I was pretty skeeved out by this whole thing.
Tara
32:21
Well, uh you know, I I think it's different when they're all the same age. Like, should they be acting this way?
Dave
32:26
I guess
Tara
32:28
No, but you know, they are holding up a mirror to how skeevy boys can be
Dave
32:33
Well that's true. I mean I guess if the point was boys are gross and here's why, yes, sure, but I wouldn't
Tara
32:38
Mm-hmm.
Dave
32:40
call any part of that exchange cute. Myself. So then again, I'm the feminist here, so
Sarah
32:46
I was skeeved out by it also, but part of the point is that
Dave
32:50
Yeah.
Sarah
32:51
They think they know what they're dealing with in terms of their
Dave
32:53
Yeah.
Sarah
32:55
sexualities, and they absolutely don't
Tara
32:56
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
32:58
uh in any direction of this interaction.
Dave
32:59
Right. Breasts feel like a bag of sand. Got it. Yep.
Sarah
33:05
Yes, correct.
Dave
33:06
I don't have the connection you guys have to this show, so I was pretty confused that all the way of Stephanie K was so subdued into clip that it does get buried by everything else that is escalating around all of that. But what I was struck by was what Sarah was sort of saying is like sort of the unworldly downward spiral these things can take and it's very fast. And when you don't know what you're doing and you try to bring sexuality into it, how quickly it just can all fall apart, especially when you're in junior high? Yes, junior high. So I thought it was effective that way, but as a catchphrase, I don't know if it grabbed me enough. I'm actually pulling a Sarah D bunting here, and I'm gonna make up my mind after Tara does.
Tara
33:47
Okay
Dave
33:48
Okay.
Sarah
33:49
That doesn't buy you much time, but okay.
Tara
33:51
No, it doesn't.
Dave
33:51
I know, but enough time.
Tara
33:52
But yes, I am gonna vote.
Dave
33:53
The tar 's gonna speak real slow.
Tara
33:54
Yes. I'm going to vote one particular way, and that way is as follows. Yes.
Dave
34:02
Okay. I'm also going to vote yes because I'm worried that my unfamiliarity with this show is sort of clouding the cultural impact that this can have. Limited in America, but great for those that partook. Alright, so that means it is two for two. So All the way with Stephanie Kay from Degrassi Junior High. You are hereby inducted into the extra hot great tiny cash raise cannon.
Clip
34:31
Americans love a winner. Yeah. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
34:37
It is time to discover who are our not quite winners and not quite losers of the week. I will go first, our first not quite winner. is Jenny Slate joining Dylan O'Brien in the Hulu comedy pilot Lex. And I just want to like highlight what Lex is about because it's one of those shows that I'm like, oh this sounds really great in paper and then when you're like, ah right it's streaming. It's gonna go on too long, it's gonna be too many episodes, but for now, let's get excited. Slate will play the only other series regular role in the pilot Holly, the recently fired personal assistant of a murder tech CEO, gets sucked into a global conspiracy along with former reality star Lex S. O'Brien. Using her organizational skills, Tara, and a knowledge of firearms she picked up somewhere along the way, she'll help Lex try to clear his name. Like a little fish out of water murder mystery global conspiracy show. You know, regular stuff.
Tara
35:26
Sure
Dave
35:26
And my not quite loser of the week is the gentleman, season two, that just debuted, and we watched the first episode and kind of dropped off ourselves.
Tara
35:35
We watch the first two.
Dave
35:36
Yeah, lost half a million viewers when it debuted in the UK and just highlights that you either need to commit to a show streaming services and pump them out faster than eighteen months in between seasons, or this will continue to happen.
Tara
35:51
Yeah.
Dave
35:52
And like no wonder why Netflix keeps on castling shit in this for the third season because by the time you hit that you're at six percent of whatever you had at the start of the first season. So uh duh, of course you would can it, but like Slow horses, look at their model. They film two seasons at a time and then bing bang boom, like you only wait a few months in between ones.
Sarah
36:10
Mm-hmm
Tara
36:11
Yeah, I also wonder how much of this drop-off is because And I know the Apple TV hardware is only one of the ways that people stream shows to their actual TVs.
Dave
36:22
I think it's not that big a big part of the percentage, but yeah.
Tara
36:24
Well, I always forget about Netflix shows when they come back because they don't show up in our lick
Dave
36:28
Oh, yeah, right
Tara
36:28
dashboard. You know what I mean?
Sarah
36:30
Yeah.
Tara
36:30
Because they don't Netflix doesn't participate in letting you track shows on Apple TV.
Dave
36:34
Right. It's just too much. I mean, still, we're in twenty twenty-six, we're in our second decade of actual streaming networks being the thing. Discoverability is still as shit as it was at the start. Nobody has cracked it. Like even the apps that everybody's like, what app should I use? They just use just watch. Well, it said this was on, but it's not. Like, yeah, it's just it's really hard to get a handle on.
Tara
36:52
Yeah
Dave
36:55
Outside of the app and then also inside of the app, you know, like
Tara
36:59
Yeah.
Dave
36:59
Netflix with their bizarre categories and stuff like that is not helpful
Tara
37:02
Yeah.
Dave
37:02
After you scroll three times, you're like British dramas, and then like scroll, scroll, scroll, and then suddenly it's like Westerns from the fifties. Like, what happened here? What's going on?
Sarah
37:11
You're like, oh yes, Maverick, thank goodness.
Dave
37:13
Yeah, exactly.
Tara
37:14
Mm-hmm
Dave
37:15
So loser of the week, but not unexpected, and not really their fault either. That's the shitty part of this.
Tara
37:20
The sh
Dave
37:21
It's like
Tara
37:21
it's not the show's fault, yeah.
Dave
37:21
it's not the show's fault, right? Because they only get green lit in this weird streaming way and it
Tara
37:26
Yes. In the case of the gentleman, there's also like when it came back, I was like, this was really was a movie-sized idea that never needed to metastasize to a show because it was a movie first.
Dave
37:36
It's just also one of those shows that where you can tell each season's just gonna be level up.
Tara
37:41
Exactly.
Dave
37:41
It's gonna be the same story except now we're not in the neighborhood, we're in the district, and from the district we'll go to the England and from England all of Britain and then now except they skipped and just went introduction. international
Tara
37:51
Yeah, they did.
Dave
37:51
in
Tara
37:52
Anyway.
Dave
37:52
season two. Okay. It's no moblin.
Tara
37:54
No, coming back soon.
Dave
37:56
Oh my god, I'm so excited.
Tara
37:57
Mobeland.
Dave
37:57
It's not a good show, but I love it.
Tara
37:58
No.
Dave
37:59
Okay, sorry.
Sarah
37:59
Uh
Dave
38:00
Sarah, winner, not quite
Sarah
38:01
Mo ba ba -ba-bland. Actually, my winner is Netflix, which finally gave the murder of JonBenét Ramsey a home and a premiere date almost two years after it wrapped production. That's the one starring Clive Owen and Melissa McCarthy. I don't think it's gonna be like world shatteringly good, but I'm glad that it found a place that is less susceptible to Rats of lawsuit for Burke Ramsey, allegedly. It was just never happening at Paramount Plus, so glad it moved. And I'm interested to see how it turns out. That will be in December. not quite losers, various Buffyverse people, including, number one, Seth Green, who publicly announced that he was not asked back for the pre-cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel. Hulu as well, Sarah Michelle Geller and David Boreanis attacked it for scrapping the show when they presented together at the Emmys And then Emmys Wise, Nicholas Brendan, not the only person left out of the in-memorium segment, but Geller and Boreanis had memorialized. the other two Buffy stars that we had lost since the last Emmy ceremony and that seemed kind of extremely shitty. Extended Buffyverse. Get your shit together. Not not you, Sarah Michelle Geller and David Boreanis, for once. Although this is my cue to remind everyone, David Boreanis is extremely afraid of chickens. This is information that everyone needs. Trust me.
Dave
39:27
Did
Tara
39:27
Mm-hmm.
Dave
39:28
you hear Sandy having a sleepwoof
Tara
39:30
What oh that was a wolf?
Dave
39:30
right there? That was ooooooh she's having a dream.
Tara
39:32
I I thishes
Dave
39:34
She just caught the squirrel or the squirrel was ten feet tall and she got scared. I don't know, one of those.
Tara
39:39
she's not the one who caught a squirrel this week, Knowlton
Dave
39:42
What has there been any since like it got pre-cancelled, has there been any rumors about what they were actually gonna do with the remake beyond next generationizing it? No. Okay.
Sarah
39:52
Mm mm.
Dave
39:52
I'm curious because it seemed like as soon as they announce it, a slam dunk for it being in front of my eyeballs just seemed like the timing was right and everything.
Tara
40:00
Yeah.
Dave
40:00
But
Tara
40:01
My not quite winners of the week. This is news from before the main show, but I saved it for here so we could go on a little more at length.
Dave
40:08
You wanna qualify it a little more?
Tara
40:10
No , my winners are the most important Emmy winners from Widows Bay. It uh won fourteen overall. tied the record for most wins for a comedy show that the studio set last year. Remember the studio speaking
Dave
40:24
Yeah
Tara
40:24
of shows that take forever to come out. Kate O'Flynn, who played Patricia, won for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, which is wonderful. And Steven Root, who became the oldest winner in the category, won Outstanding Supporting Actor And I love him forever because for all of the obvious reasons, but when I was catching up on my late night with Seth Myers 's from the spring a few weeks ago, he was a guest. Circa when Widows Bay first came out and said it was the first talk show he had ever done, which is insane for someone who has many as many credits as he has.
Sarah
40:57
What? That's wild.
Tara
40:59
And finally, Hiro Murai, also an executive producer of the show, he won for comedy directing and is the first Asian director to win an Emmy for doing so And he's great. We talked about him when we talked about Widows Bay, how you can always tell his style across many wonderful shows, Beef, Atlanta, obviously
Sarah
41:18
Atlanta.
Tara
41:18
this, the rest.
Sarah
41:20
Mm-hmm.
Tara
41:21
And then my not quite loser of the week, hey, when a company like LG has to issue a statement denying that its TVs continuously record and transmit owners' conversations, is that good? Cause I feel like it's not. It seems to be continuously is the the salient word here because you know, we're not taping all the time, just when people are in the room talking. Like, I don't know, it's it's all very sketchy, but yikes.
Sarah
41:45
Uh yeah
Dave
41:47
The base of it is they're doing the same thing Alexis does. They're waiting for the trigger word, but they're being very cagey about it. So it seems like there's something that plus a little extra they're being very hesitant to talk about But the base of it isn't that it's always on recording everything and that uh that is sent and put in your record. It's not like that. It's more like, hey
Tara
42:06
Yeah
Dave
42:07
Apple ding-dong lady, hey
Tara
42:08
Mm-hmm.
Dave
42:09
Amazon ding-dong lady, you know, that kind of thing.
Tara
42:10
Yes. Right. Just if you don't want your TV to be recording you, make sure you change your settings because they are on by default
Dave
42:18
Right. It knows everything.
Tara
42:27
This question comes to us from Damon Silver. It was on Discord, so I have called it American Game Show Story and Damon writes. Ryan Murphy is expanding his empire and becoming a game show producer. Sidebar. He's not really. Does seem like something he might do, but this is just a thought experiment.
Sarah
42:42
Yeah.
Tara
42:44
Which two famous TV families go head
Sarah
42:44
Uh-huh.
Tara
42:46
to head on Family Feud? What are the outrageous categories? And what are the bitchiest answers? I will go first. Our families are gonna be the Roys of Succession. So we got Kendall, Shiv, Tom, Roman, and Connor in that order Logan refuses to acknowledge the booking, never mind being on the team telling his children and in-laws they are not serious people, of course. They're gonna be facing off against the Gonzalezes of Primo and
Sarah
43:15
Oh,
Tara
43:15
in this order
Sarah
43:15
mine, too.
Tara
43:16
Drea, Jay, Ryan, Raleigh, and Rafa. Mondo doesn't care about being left out, but Mike is livid and tries to sabotage the taping. Game categories, things a parent should never say to their child, You Wanna Suck My Dick from Roman is Leroy's third strike, because that is something Logan actually said to him. Other games, something you play on a family game night, Mike screams Game Champ and gets kicked out of the studio, the Roy's blank on Bore on the Floor. Essential ingredients of Mexican cooking is a tough one for Drea, and things you find on a private plane kind of favors the Roy 's a little bit. Here are our categories for fast money. Something you wish strangers wouldn't give you. Somewhere you go the day after Thanksgiving, a good gift for a parent, how many times a week you talk to your financial planner and favorite Italian fashion brand Drea wishes strangers wouldn't give you advice. Shiv a subpoena. Drea goes to Best Buy the day after Thanksgiving. Shiv Saint Bart ' Good gift for a parent. Drea's is a handmade piece of art. Shiv's is two Rolexes, assuming her brothers will give her father one. How many times a week you talk to your financial planner planner zero for Drea versus six for Shiv and Italian fashion brand Shiv 's going Valentino Drea Massimo when they used to be at Target Finally, the Gonzalez family wins, but before the production can pay them their cash prize, the Roys get the show cancelled and wiped off the face of the earth and all streaming platforms because that is power that they have. This
Dave
44:49
I'm gonna go with two very repressed families with disparate energies. That's gonna be the Blues from Rest of Development and the Crawlies from Downtown Abbey.
Sarah
44:57
Ooh, okay
Dave
44:58
For the Blues, we got Lucille, Buster, Joe, Tobias, and Lindsay. The Crawlies got Mary, Robert, Violet, Edith, and the burn victim pretending to be a Canadian relative.
Tara
45:09
Sure
Dave
45:09
Questions include: Top 5 easiest ways to squander a fortune, top 9 bitchiest things said by a matriarch, top 7 ways to have fun with one less limb than everyone else. Top six devastating things revealed at a family dinner, top eight places you think the staff is keeping the stuff you're sure they stole from you, and top ten most surprising things found in a refrigerator slash icebox. The game is close, but the Blues advance to the money round. Buster, who is weirdly good at this, gets the family to 158 points in round one. But Lucille sinks the chances of the family because she does understand the questions and she won't respond to them
Sarah
45:46
And we 'll respond to it
Tara
45:49
Oh fuck, I just realized it wouldn't be Drea and Shiv. Anyway. Oh well.
Dave
45:53
Is it
Sarah
45:54
Stage left, the reigning champions after a record setting 58 episodes which no other family dared to steal their points or even approach the board sometimes out of sheer dread. It's the Soprano family, Tony, Carmella, Meadow, AJ, and Janice. And our challengers, who after the rigors of the game champ, would welcome the relative emotional tranquility of confronting alleged gangsters in a game of algo trivia. It's the Gonzalez family Drea, Rafa, Jay, Mike, and Ryan, because Roli is in lockup again and Mondo is at a craft fair. It's a donor. We'll start with Tony Andrea, top eight answers on the board, name a traditional dish everyone in your family actually thinks is disgusting Subsequent categories include Name a queer-coded character in your life, Dollar Values Double for Meadow and J, name away a meaningful family gathering can go off the rails. And then we fast forward to a close game with dollar values having tripled top three answers on the board, name a famous sibling too stupid to live on their own. By the time we reach Fast Money, both families could play this list of questions. What's the normal number of times to have spent the night in jail? The most pathetic word you've seen played in Scrabble What do you think of when you hear the word duck? On a scale of one to ten, how reliable is your nephew? The last time you set foot in a bank. And that's it.

It's a little long, a little maudlin, like look at me, but not bad. This is Extra Hot Great Minis. Today's topic is Kiss My Grits. Today's topic Is an extra credit from Greg French, who writes, The new Anna Green Gables, as we discussed in our main show this week, has been described as gritty. Add some grit to a decidedly non-gritty show, Dave. Grey who? Okay. Dave start us off. Uh it's Lassie, but she's rabid and in an ISIS sleeper cell. All right, well mine is from Gilmore Girls. To supplement her income as a struggling journalist, Rory Gilmore takes out an ad in Backpage magazine to launch her career as a sex worker while her mother Lorelai finds herself underwater in her payments for the construction on the Dragonfly. And ends up getting busted out by the mob. John. Wow. A planned parenthood-based drama called The Facts of Life. I went a similar way and had a uh massage parlor based drama called Happy Endings.
