Little House On The Prairie has been one in a series of historical memoirs and a TV series that premiered in 1974, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more adaptations: Kim Reed, possibly the world’s biggest franchise fan (or at least the biggest in our acquaintance) returns to talk about Netflix’s new version, which has already been renewed for a second season. Around The Dial takes us through The Other Bennet Sister, Big Brother S28, House Of The Dragon, Squatters, and Human Vapor. Tara pitches the Mad About You episode “Bedfellows” for induction into the Canon. Then, after naming the week’s Winner and Loser, it’s on to a Game Time with an extensive bibliography. Grab a peppermint stick and listen!

We are talking about Little House on the Prairie 2026 edition, and obviously we could not guess any other guest than Kim to talk about this show. In which we meet the Ingalls family after they have departed their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin for the promise of free land in Kansas Though Charles, Luke Bracie, aka Paw, has romantic dreams about starting over on the frontier, he clearly has not thought through how laborious and dangerous that is gonna be Amid and around the potentially fatal hazards that threaten the family, we get little hints that Pa may not have simply left Wisconsin, but possibly fled under possibly shady circumstances The show is based on the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which was previously adapted into a series of the same name, which ran in the 70s and 80s. This one was created by Rebecca Sonnenshine, whose former credits include such incongruous titles as The Vampire Diaries and The Boys. It was renewed for a second season in March, months before Netflix dropped all eight episodes of the first season July 9th. We might talk about events from any of them. Let's do the chan check-in. Kim, your voice is the most important one on this. Should our listeners watch the new little house on the prairie.
Kim
02:51
Oh my goodness. I would say if you liked the books or have fond memories of the books, then yes. Otherwise, you can skip it.
Tara
02:59
Sarah
Sarah
03:00
Um, my favorite part was when Mary exploded. Just kidding. I sort of like that it was the books, but with this Malik vibe. If that sounds like something you would enjoy, you should watch it, but otherwise Kim's right.
Dave
03:13
I had the sense that that is what Kim was going to say, and I thought, even though I've never been close to the books, that that would be my reaction to. So I'm going to give Kim my little house on a prairie a pending approval thumb.
Tara
03:27
Well, I n started to read the first book, I think, and got bored. I definitely watched the original show, but have not been near it in years. But I love this, I'm gonna keep watching, so Let's drill down. Obviously, we have to start with our subject matter expert, Kim. What has made the original series one of your obsessions, I'm gonna say? And which of those features does the new show share?
Kim
03:53
Well, as a child of the 70s and 80s, I think around the bicentennial and later there was a lot of interest in sort of colonial times and pioneer times and American history in general. I know my parents had a real colonial living room set. I'm sure it wasn't the only one. Also, reading the books, as a kid, I read them over and over. I did a report on Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography in when I was in third grade for fun, not for school, just because I wanted to.
Sarah
04:15
Same
Kim
04:25
Just to give you a sense of how deep of an yeah, I am a nerd and I was very deep in the in the lore. I did also like the show. The show for me was almost always a separate entity because it's so
Sarah
04:37
Yes, same.
Kim
04:38
campy. You know, the reason I love it now is 'cause it's so ridiculous, as evidenced by my segments on the p on this very podcast. So I went in kind of expecting a more historically accurate or at least more faithful to the books, 'cause the show is not faithful to the books other than the sort of the main characters. What I found was it is and it isn't. So I have mixed feelings about it. There's certain details they I understand adaptations are always gonna have to change from the source material for narrative economy and just for modern audiences and that sort of thing. But there were things they changed that I don't know why. Like why does Ma have red hair? That was weird Um and why doesn't Mary have blonde hair? And that just seems like a silly thing, but it's literally a major plot point in the Little House on the Prairie book that Mary has blonde hair and Laura has Brown hair and Laura's super jealous of her. So just things like that. And then obviously the thing Tara alluded to, not in the books at all. I'm interested to hear what you guys as non-weirdos about this show have to say because I feel like I'm too close to it sometimes to have a really good opinion or you know, fair opinion.
Tara
05:39
Okay, well as a non weirdo, Sarah, go ahead.
Sarah
05:44
The uh started no sentence effort that anyone ever listened to. This was one of the handful of shows that I was allowed to watch, but I also read the entire series. I read it over and over again. And so I'm with Kim. Like I loved them both, but they were like barely in conversation with each other because even as a little kid, it was like, why doesn't Pa have a beard? Why Why aren't these children out of order? Why aren't they living in like a thumbprint in the side of a riverbank, like in the Plum Creek book? You know, same names but basically completely different vibes. Chips on the frontier. Fine. Not a problem with that So I was interested to just see what they would do and how tied they would feel to the original show. I was g again getting more book Vibes from it. And as Kim said, like they did allied certain things. Certain things are out of order. There's like they're implying certain things about Charles Ingalls that are like, hmm, I don't know. But it's shot really beautifully. There is a certain amount of like frontier processy stuff happening that I enjoyed, and I didn't mind that it was both Not faithful to the original show and not totally faithful to the books. It just made me want to go back and maybe read the books again or Wilder's biography, which I read Years and years ago, but I enjoyed it. I think that it loves its material, and so for that reason it's it's good. And I mean, pa's hot. That's new.
Tara
07:20
Yeah, Pa's hot. I mean, Michael Landon also hot.
Kim
07:23
How dare you slander Michael Landon and his pepperoni nipples like that?
Tara
07:27
Wow.
Sarah
07:28
Yeah, okay, Jesus
Dave
07:28
It's pepperoni nipples First time I heard you call his nipples pepperoni nipples, I was on the floor. I just could not deal with it.
Kim
07:37
I'm not wrong.
Dave
07:37
It is true. It's very true.
Sarah
07:39
Yeah, he and I it's earring.
Tara
07:40
Dave, you posted on our Discord that this was feeling like misery porn to you.
Dave
07:46
A little bit. I mean the first episode anyways, you know, they have to get to Independence, Kansas.
Tara
07:51
Yes.
Dave
07:51
And they're trying to cross a river and it goes bad and everybody's having a bad time. The dog just jumps off and never seen again for most of the episode. Spoiler, it comes back. Well just getting back to the dog first. The opening scene with the Ingalls is them leaving Wisconsin and they just leave without their dog and then like
Tara
08:07
Wisconsin.
Dave
08:12
Ten seconds later the dog runs after them. Make sure the dog's on the wagon before you leave the state, is my advice to the Ingalls family. They're very laissez-faire with the care of their dog. I realize it's a working dog probably, but still Still, you can't do it.
Kim
08:26
Well also, this is one thing that stuck out to me is I went back and reread the first couple chapters of Little House on the Prairie last night. Because I do my research. And the same thing happens. They cross a river. Jack the dog jumps out of the wagon once Charles jumps in. And then is swept away, presumably never to be seen again. But in the book, they're camping out that night and they see like eyes in the prairie grass and Pa thinks it's a wolf and he gets his gun out And then all of a sudden Laura realizes it's Jack and then they're reunited. And I'm like, that's so much better. Like that even visually that would have been s in this in this episode, Jack just kind of shows up and Laura's happy. And I'm like, you know, so that's the sort of thing where I was like But I what I kind of realize is I love the illustrations in the original book so much. They're Garth Williams as the illustrator that I want this show to look like
Sarah
09:13
Mm-hmm.
Kim
09:17
that and that's not what they're doing and I just need to sort of make my peace with that. And I did. I watched almost all the episodes. I haven't quite gotten through all the way through yet. And I did enjoy it. But if you're going into it thinking finally a actual adaptation of the source material, this isn't quite that.
Dave
09:32
Right. Also, Jack probably just came back in the TV show because he was hungry. He's like, oh damn, stomach. Guess I should head back.
Kim
09:40
Dinner time
Dave
09:40
Yeah.
Tara
09:40
Yep. As soon as this version was announced, the discourse about it focused on how it would work in Some plots that the mostly white seventies show alighted and the books, I assume. For me, what we see which includes a local doctor and a shopkeeper who are black, although apparently the doctor was black in the book as well, I read We get members of the Osage tribe discussing amongst themselves what it means to have the settlers moving in. All of that feels like the kind of stuff That any sensible person in 2026 would naturally want to include the issue is how many sensible people are there in 2026? I don't know How well, Kim, did you think this showrunner widened her scope compared to other versions of this story?
Kim
10:24
Well, I will say the seventies show tried.
Tara
10:27
Mm-hmm.
Kim
10:27
I'm not say gonna say they were successful, it was still the seventies. But I remember watching the episode that has Todd Bridges stars as a I can't even remember now if he's a A freed slave 'cause this is just post civil war, but orphan, I believe. And I remember watching it being like, wow, that was pretty they really went there for a 70s show. This show, it's nice that they include some of the Osage family as, you know, human beings with their own thoughts and motivations. That certainly does not happen in the books. And mm, you know, uh not really in the seventies show. It's a thankless task, I think, to try to take this source material and make it a little bit more broad and inclusive. And I thought they did a pretty good job of it. I'll be interested to see. I was just reading that it did get renewed for a second season. And that they will be changing locations because historically that's what happened is the Ingalls family moved around a lot because Charles was a deadbeat. And um Sorry, did I sneak that in there? And uh so I'll be interested to see, obviously not every famil unlike on the 70s show, the whole town isn't gonna move with them necessarily, all the people in the town.
Tara
11:34
Right. Right
Kim
11:35
So it'll be interesting to see how that continues moving forward.
Dave
11:38
Another guest from Kansas, all the way here in Minnesota.
Tara
11:38
Mm-hmm.
Dave
11:42
Ah, get the cornbread.
Sarah
11:42
Wow. Yeah, I think that the books are for children, so there was a you know, there was a certain amount of like even reading them in the 70s that I would sort of come downstairs and be like, why is Ma like this to my own Ma, who I called that for This reason, because of these books, I tried it with Pa. Dave Sr. was like, eh-dad or nothing. And st stop pouring Mrs. Butterworth on snow and trying to make candy. Why are you like this? But anyway, like there's definitely I think there's definitely a temptation to like tack back in the other direction But if you are still making a show that's like a family entertainment or it's for children, there's a limit to what you can do. And there's also a limit to how much you can ameliorate people being shithead products of their time. But then you also in some ways have an opportunity to look at boundaries that the frontier did not allow to exist as much and make that a part of the story that can make it a little more palatable
Tara
12:44
Right.
Dave
12:50
Yeah. If you want to go all the way and just have that show, there's a show called American Primeval, which is basically this show when everybody dies.
Sarah
12:57
Mm-hmm.
Tara
12:58
Yeah
Dave
12:58
Everybody has a bad time on the frontier, the show.
Tara
13:01
It's also on Netflix. I'll say this one is more like um in a lot of respects uh Anne with an E, which is on Netflix as well. Where it's, you know, based on beloved historical source material of those are novels, they're not actually nonfiction the way Little House is But it also widened its scope and sort of acknowledged like there were people in this time that were living places and they weren't all white and they all they had different interests and needs and motivations and were full humans like Kim said. I'll also say the show had an all-female directing team and two of them formerly worked on Reservation Dogs. Thank you to Catherine, Past and Future Guests, Catherine Van Ehren Dog for flagging this, which is, you know, I think also helps. You know, change your perspective on what story you're telling. Which character here, Kim, would you say is the biggest upgrade from the original or downgrade?
Kim
13:51
I would say, well, upgrade visually, Mr. Edwards, whoo, he's hot
Tara
13:56
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
13:57
Oh my God, yeah.
Tara
13:57
Oh yeah.
Kim
13:57
Pa didn't do it for me, but Mr. Edwards was hot and certainly I mean, rest in peace, Victor French, he didn't do it for me in this from the 70s show.
Sarah
14:01
Mm-hmm
Kim
14:06
I'm gonna say downgrade was and a slight downgrade was Laura. The actress was fine.
Tara
14:13
Mm-hmm.
Kim
14:13
She was great, but the way she was written and directed, the Laura I fell in love with in the books and even on the 70s show was more of like a Ramona Quimby type where she was frustrated sometimes and angry sometimes and jealous sometimes and impulsive sometimes And you could really relate to her as a character, at least I could as a little kid, because you're like, I'm trying to be good, but I have all these feelings and I don't always do the right thing and my stupid sister always does the right thing.
Tara
14:39
Ajรก, mm
Kim
14:39
And a hater, and you know, some people can relate. But um this Laura, everything the edges felt sanded off to me a little bit. I just didn't see that spunkiness, for lack of a better word that I was expecting or that I feel like is Laura's sort of keynote. So that was a little bit of a downgrade for me. Maybe that'll change moving forward. I don't know. But yeah, that would be my answer.
Sarah
15:02
I like that Ma is just a little more. I mean, in the books I feel like there are all these references to like You know, long ago when we lived in civilization and she had an 18-inch waist, like, oh my god, this poor woman. Fuck. But also that there is the like clear implication that, I mean, Pa must be a fucking whiz in the old canvas sack because there were a couple of times when she's like If i if I weren't getting the good Frontier D, I would not be putting up with your shit.
Tara
15:31
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
15:34
Like it's ch I mean
Dave
15:35
Do you mean by Frontier D, do you mean manifest destiny?
Sarah
15:38
Yes.
Tara
15:39
Putting the man in Manifest Destiny
Sarah
15:40
Manifest D Putting the man in manifest destiny.
Dave
15:40
Yeah, he's putting yeah. A man fast destiny. Yes, thank you.
Sarah
15:44
Yeah. I we should stop here, I feel, at the edge of the landmass
Dave
15:48
Title, that's the title of the show.
Sarah
15:51
But yeah, I I liked that it was a little more sort of broad spectrum about her being like, What did we do? Like
Kim
15:58
Yeah.
Sarah
15:59
This was a huge mistake and now it can't be undone. And um so I I did like that. Um I think Kib's right about Laura. But yeah, no real no real downgrades. It's just different and it's its own thing and I think it works and doesn't suffer in comparison
Dave
16:15
Uh I don't know if it's the downgrade or a new character or whatever, but the French lady is like, I wear trousers! Yahoo! Like incredibly giant and they look like they would be the hottest things on earth but she didn't like trousers trousers look at me on the front deal with trousers I liked her
Tara
16:38
Yeah. What kind of present day scams do we think a time traveling paw would be most likely to fall for, and why is it crypto?
Dave
16:44
Oh yeah. I think he would definitely get swept up in some sort of banking scandal, obviously.
Sarah
16:51
Yeah.
Tara
16:54
Sure.
Dave
16:54
That sort of is what happens here, right? Built on land that doesn't belong to him and
Tara
16:58
Yeah.
Sarah
16:58
I mean, Campfire Festival. I don't I don't think he's falling for one, I think he's perpetrating one.
Tara
17:06
He's starting it. It's an all f all fiddle lineup at uh Campfire Fest.
Dave
17:08
Yeah.
Kim
17:08
Yeah.
Sarah
17:11
Yep. Mm-hmm
Kim
17:12
Well, I was thinking about this because I was thinking about again things that they've changed from the source material or not.
Tara
17:13
Yeah
Kim
17:18
And I thought, okay, well, the real reason that they left Kansas the first or they left Wisconsin the first time was just, you know, Manifest Destiny, Frontier Spirit, Pop Auto got too crowded, he wanted more freedom, blah, blah, blah. Same reason any frontier pr person pretty much left. And I think modern audiences maybe wouldn't understand that or wouldn't see it as a reason. So they had to create this whole backstory of like There was an incident and that's why Pa left and now they can't go because I think any reasonable person watching the first episode would be like, What are you doing? Go home. Why are you still here?
Sarah
17:50
Yeah.
Kim
17:51
She's pregnant? Are you kidding me?
Sarah
17:52
But I put it in a legal curb cut, buddy.
Kim
17:55
Yeah.
Sarah
17:55
Just go back.
Kim
17:55
Um so they had to invent this whole incident that didn't happen.
Sarah
17:56
It's fine
Kim
17:59
It made Pa seem dumber to me. Like, well he did he screwed something up back in Wisconsin. Now we're out here and he's screwing things up here. And I was like, aren't I supposed to be rooting for this character? Because right now I'm just like, Ma, go home. What are we doing? I will say if you watch more episodes, I did soften towards the character a little more as time went on.
Sarah
18:13
Yeah, really
Kim
18:18
But the first episode especially I was like, take the girls and go. What are we doing?
Dave
18:22
In the books, do they explain where the brass band that opens the post office came from in the middle of nowhere?
Kim
18:28
Look, people traveled with pianos, we saw that.
Dave
18:30
Mm-hmm. That's true.
Kim
18:32
Trumpets, trombones, you know, it was a musical time.
Tara
18:34
Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:34
Yeah.
Kim
18:35
Pa had his fiddle.
Dave
18:35
All right.
Tara
18:36
Yeah.
Dave
18:36
Okay, fine.
Sarah
18:36
Yeah.
Tara
18:37
Harmonica. Hello.
Kim
18:38
Yeah.
Tara
18:38
Dave, were you aware that the girl who plays Mary is named Skywalker Hughes in real life?
Dave
18:43
I did read that in one of the winners and losers in the past, so yes, I was aware of that. And uh I mean, I guess it worked out for her.
Tara
18:50
Yeah, mm-hmm
Dave
18:50
Here she is on a big news show, so I assume that's a Star Wars related naming and not a First Nations related naming
Tara
18:58
Oh, good point.
Kim
18:59
No, I think I read it Star Wars.
Dave
19:01
I mean kids name their kids Anakin now. It's like, oh Jesus, really? How about Attila or you know something? Got any other historical monsters you want to slip in there?
Tara
19:11
We got a cameo in episode two from a star of the original show. Kim, what were your thoughts about that?
Kim
19:18
I didn't recognize her. It wasn't until I was reading up on it later. Like I was watching, I'm like, boy, she looks familiar, but I try if I give in to my temptation to pull up the IMDB while I'm watching. I'd I'll do nothing else.
Tara
19:30
Yeah
Dave
19:30
Scrap
Kim
19:30
So I always try to wait until after and then look it up.
Sarah
19:30
Mm-hmm.
Kim
19:33
And uh yeah, Alison Arngrim, Nellie Olson from the original series, plays a, I don't know, creepy lady.
Tara
19:39
Mm-hmm.
Kim
19:40
I thought that was nice.
Tara
19:41
Mm-hmm.
Kim
19:41
It was a nice little ha tip of the hat.
Dave
19:41
It was nice. She was just trying to do a little human trafficking. Just try to get by.
Kim
19:45
Well, if you know anything about her Alison Arngrim's personality and public persona these days, it was a perfect role for her
Tara
19:52
Yeah.
Sarah
19:52
Mm-hmm.
Tara
19:53
Mm-hmm. Feels like we're wrapping up. I'll just say to anyone who's charmed by the big skies, which we hear a lot about. Go to Regina. You're gonna see more. We get to the edge of town. When you hit the city limits, it stops dead. And all you can see is flat ground and the sky. Although they did shoot this around Winnipeg, Regina's better.
Dave
20:13
Okay.
Tara
20:14
No pushback.
Dave
20:15
Uh yeah, no, that should be their city slogan, Regina We Gas Guys.
Clip
20:24
Got a lot of shows. It's a great time for shows.
Dave
20:29
It is time to go around the dial. First up is Tar.
Tara
20:33
I watched another show set in the 19th century, The Other Bennett Sister. I had been hearing about it through the sp TOBS. I'd been hearing about it through the spring. I finally got it to it over our break. Jane Austen, of course, is firmly in the public domain, which means different creators can do all kinds of things with her source material like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or Death Comes to Pemberley where Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy solve a murder. So considering this possibilities, this one is pretty reverent to the original. It's based on a novel by Janice Hadlow The other Bennett sister in question, or TOBS, if you will, is Mary, the middle sibling in the family. She's played here by Ella Bruccoleri, who I mostly know from Call the Midwife, but she was also in down Cemetery Road last fall on Apple. From Pride and Prejudice, what you remember about Mary, if anything, is that she's like kind of a prig. She reads a lot, she lectures people about what she reads, she's proud of her piano playing, she makes everyone listen to her at a ball until Mr. Bennett asks her to stop. And when mister Collins, the heir to the Bennett estate, comes to visit looking to marry one of the sisters, Mary tries to put herself forward as the family savior because she actually has some things in common with mister Collins that doesn't work out. Basically all the events of the original novel are covered in the first two episodes of ten in the season. Moderate spoilers follow for the setup of the rest of the series. Once all her sisters are married off, Mary's left alone and kind of without prospects. Mr. Bennett, who is played here by Richard E. Grant, he dies, and then the Collinses want to move in basically immediately and take over the house. Mary's not that excited about being shunted around as her annoying mother's companion. Mrs. Bennett's played Pier by Ruth Jones from Gavin and Stacy, I think. So she goes to London to live with her aunt and Uncle Gardner and her world starts to open up This is essentially Cobra Kai for Prejudice. Changing the POV from beautiful, witty, Lizzie to anxious, insecure, Mary changes the viewer's impression of a lot of the characters. like the Charlotte. Mary friendship has a different cast once we understand how big a betrayal it is for Charlotte to a snake, Mr. Collins. Mary forces Lizzie to acknowledge her own privileges as someone everyone always knew was a catch and as bad as Mrs. Bennett is in the original novel, here she is basically an emotional abuser trying to grind Mary down, but It's mostly light and sweet. It's about Mary meeting cute men in London, getting more exposure to the happy, healthy gardener marriage, which makes her reconsider the institution and what she wants out of life. If you watched Young Sherlock Holmes, is that what it was called on Prime Video, that show?
Dave
22:59
Uh yeah.
Tara
23:00
If you watch that, the guy who plays Moriarty is one of the one of the suitors and he's very good. So if you like Jane Austen and you have Brit Box, you've probably already watched this. If you don't have Brit Box and this sounds good to you, fly to England. You can find it very easily For my plug, I'm gonna mention the Again With This club because we are continuing our recapping of my so-called life, episode two, drops Thursdays. So again with thispodcast. com slash club is where you can hear that and so very much more. You can join for as low as $5 a month and we wish you would.
Dave
23:35
Kim, what do you got for us?
Kim
23:36
Okay, I'm gonna do a little bit of highbrow lowbrow, but it's more like lowbrow, slightly higher brow. My lowbrow is Big Brother if you follow me on Blue Sky I already talked about this, but in the first episode of this season, season just started last week, which is season twenty-eight, we met fourteen new players and then one returning Big Brother player and one Survivor player. And both of the returnees were heavily spoiled before the season started. But the rumor said there was going to be one more Survivor player joining. So we all patiently waited for her to appear and the door to the house opened and Instead of who we were expecting, three-time Big Brother player and amazing race contestant Rachel Riley walked through and said she was joining the game. And they were all kind of like What? What is happening? And what you need to know about Rachel is that she's known for her drama and histrionics, but she's never boring and she did win season 13 And she was on last season and she was actually doing really well. And then there was a twist that totally screwed her over, and she went out about halfway through the season. So it's not crazy that Big Brother might bring her back as kind of a make good But also she wasn't who we were expecting. So the theme this season is time travel. And the three reality veterans were set to play this competition with a Jurassic era theme. But Before they could start, someone in a rubber dinosaur costume came out and threatened Rachel such that she was backed up a staircase, and then the dinosaur pushed her into a volcano and she died. And then we went to commercial. And then we came back from commercial and Julie Chen said, welcome back to the most unexpected season premiere in the history of Big Brother. Just moments ago, a Velociraptor threw Rachel into a volcano. And then they brought in the Survivor contestant we all knew was going to be on this season, and then over the closing credits they showed a skeleton with a wig floating in the lava. And if that sounds amazing to you, you should watch Big Brother this summer, because it is the dumbest show on television.
Dave
25:21
Wow. If you omitted names from that and told me that was the new season opener to the next great British bake off, I would be like, yeah, maybe.
Sarah
25:25
What the Fuck?
Kim
25:27
Yes.
Tara
25:32
Mm-hmm.
Kim
25:33
That's about the quality of the uh props and everything, but just Rachel coming on the show immediately getting thrown into a volcano by a rubber dinosaur.
Dave
25:41
Wow.
Kim
25:41
Chef's kiss. Love it.
Tara
25:43
Wow.
Kim
25:43
Anyway, but I also wanted to give a quick plug to House of the Dragon season three is currently airing because I think the show has course corrected. for some of the issues it had in season two. So the subject matter is Targaryen Civil War. So by nature it's gonna be pretty glum. But the season does feel a little bit later, which is a weird thing to say when people are getting killed off all the time. But By focusing more on the pairings and the relationships, which is something that the middle seasons of Game of Thrones did really well, it's not as much battle after battle after battle in CGI Dragons. The thing I find fascinating about this show is that the source material is not a series of novels like Game of Thrones. It's a fictional history written hundreds of years later in the show's telling. relying on sources that had their own biases, but were all men. And yet the central pair of the show is two women, Ranira Targaryen and Alison Hightower. their childhood best friends until, as happens, Alicent married Renera's dad, who was the king. So the show has deviated a great deal from the book in terms of the characterization of these two women. But it's always to me in a way that can be explained by the actions and the motivations that the fake male historians couldn't or didn't want to know. I know some people don't want to go back to Westeros after how Game of Thrones ended, and I get it, but If you watch this show in the first season and then after waiting so long for the next season kind of gave up, I'd recommend coming back for season three. There's plenty of YouTube videos out there to get you caught up. And there's a lot more focus on the politics and the relationships, which is what I always liked about Game of Thrones. It's not perfect, and I know it's not going to end well. Again, it's a civil war that can only end after a lot of people and dragons die, but I'm along for the ride and maybe you wanna be too.
Tara
27:24
Thank you. What do you want to plug?
Kim
27:26
I will plug my segment. You if you're not a patron already, you should be because every month I do a segment called The Most Awesome Thing I Saw on TV last month, and sometimes it's about Little House, and sometimes it's about Love boat and sometimes it's about whatever other weird shows, mostly 70s and 80s shows that I watch and then recap as quickly as possible or Dave Yells at me.
Dave
27:49
Oh, throw me under the bus. All right, Sarah, what have you been watching?
Sarah
27:55
Here is a description of squatters from AE's show page. Squatters are taking over homes across the country, and Flash Shelton is the band who gets them out. With bold tactics and street smarts, Flash and his team face tense and sometimes dangerous situations to help families reclaim their property. I saw an ad for squatters somewhere weeks ago. I think I was actually uh prepping crashers for extra extra hock rate And I said out loud to myself, since when is AE exclusively and entirely the prosecution of property crimes on camera It just seems like the network doesn't have any content that is not either scaremongering about or helping to criminalize perceptions of misdemeanor shit. That is actually a downstream effect of a bad economy or substance misuse or structural racism or or or I checked. It does have non-cop shows. Storage Wars, Zombie House Flip, the occasional orphaned block of WWE clip shows. But even the non-cob shows are still f foregrounding the law in possession is nine tenths of in a way that will reliably give mr dan Abrams a boner and the rest of the schedule for the next week as we're recording this is like Nonstop behold cops copping programming. Fine. None of this is really new information. A guy leveraging his squatter ousting YouTube channel into a spot on the schedule at a traditional network is also not exactly the cutting edge of content. Does squatters have anything else to say that might justify giving it a look? Well, uh, I hope you're sitting down. No, not really. I watched an episode from last week called A Twisted Takeover. in which the aforementioned squatter hunter, Flash Elton, assists Dee Snyder, yes, that one, and his wife Suzette. in ejecting squatters from Suzette's parents' home on Staten Island. Overall it's fine. Shelton is both formidable and likable enough as the protagonist of one of these shows. The half hour moves right along, but that's because the episode is much more interesting on paper than in practice. Viewers could use a lot more information about the specifics of both squatting and de squatting If the show is not going to do that kind of servicey processy stuff, and we can safely assume, based on its network of residents, that it also is not trying to do a survey of these systemic Faults and failures that bring everyone to a squatting situation, punitive fuel, housing, and health care costs for starters Then what is it for exactly? Letting the audience feel superior to the economically desperate? I feel like we have enough of those shows. We don't need another one. If you have Dee Snyder on your episode, give him something to do besides sitting in a diner wearing a lot of rings and nodding. About how his late mother-in-law's caretakers moved their entire family, including their dog Rocky, who was awesome into the house and then wouldn't leave. I have a full review of this at Best Evidence. We'll link it in the show notes. Justice for Rocky. My actual plug is Us or actually extra Extra Hot Great, we do still have a mutual aid vault. People have mentioned that you should join our club and you should. See previous Ray, rising gas costs, rising health care costs. Dave
31:41
Also great if you've recently had a ruinous river crossing. Alright, you may remember going back to the summer TV preview. I was talking about human vapor as a show. on paper that I think I'd want to watch and now it has come to pass. We have watched it. Human Vapor has a really good first five minutes that the show can never live up to for the rest of the run. I was
Tara
32:05
Well, there's there's something that happens in the in a future episode where
Dave
32:06
Well what? Fine.
Tara
32:11
There's there's a thing of vapor with an eyeball on top, and that's how he spies on things. Okay, go on
Dave
32:17
All right. Well, in the first five minutes of the show, they're at Japanese CNN and there's a guest there, and then the vapors crawl along the floor and get in his system, and then this guy is lifted up and explodes over the set. Like literally just like giblets and blood goo everywhere and then from there It just didn't go anywhere because you think the human vapor in the synopsis is like, I've been wronged and now everybody's gonna get it.
Tara
32:45
Yeah,
Dave
32:45
And that that was the main character. I'm just gonna be an agent of chaos, I'm gonna be a terrorist and Tokyo. I'm going to go around with my vaporly powers and vaporly kill people. And it turns out he's not even that. He's like basically a golem. He's not even under his own control. He's just doing things because People are mad at things that happened in the past and really just deflated the whole enterprise. So and then yes, there is an eyeball on a vapor stock, Tara. Or Tara.
Tara
33:10
Mm-hmm.
Dave
33:11
But otherwise, uh, you could probably give that one a pass, disappointed in human favor.
Tara
33:11
Yep. It was a real drag. And then, like the first episode, like Dave said, starts off with a bang. And then in the second episode, there's no human vapor at all.
Dave
33:24
There was a real dearth of human vaporing throughout this whole show called the human vapor.
Tara
33:29
Yes.
Dave
33:29
Like Mm- it it's like um marquee shows of the seventies that w were very expensive, say like Battlestar Galactica, and you're like as a kid's like, ooh, it's just like Star Wars, I want to watch it, but they only can budget 17 seconds of space stuff per episode It was sort of like that with human vapor. It's like, well, I guess it's vaping time.
Tara
33:46
Uh huh
Dave
33:47
So it was just uh wasn't there. Wasn't clicking. So human vapor, I think you can skip it.
Tara
33:53
Yeah.
Dave
33:53
All right, coming up on Extra Extra Hot Great this Friday, we're going to be covering the TV show Lucky, Apple TV, Anna, Anna Joy Taylor is some sort of assassin or something.
Tara
34:03
Mm-hmm.
Dave
34:04
And oh no, things happen.
Tara
34:05
Anya Taylor Joy, even
Dave
34:08
Okay, great.
Sarah
34:08
Yeah. And con woman, but sure.
Dave
34:11
Dave's making up actors in his own mind. Uh that is available to club members, extrahotgreat. com slash club. for more and then come back here next week. EHG Prime will be welcoming back Will Leach to talk about the hawk. Where's my hawk sound effect? It's gone. Add it in post.
Tara
34:32
Can I go pee before we I didn't know that was coming. Can I go to the bathroom before we do the Canon?
Dave
34:37
Oh, now I have to keep the pee request in the show, Tara.
Tara
34:40
Sorry
Dave
34:40
All right, Tara. You go pee, and everybody will wait for you listening. We'll we'll we'll do the pause in real time.
Tara
34:44
Come on. I'm back. That was hard because my foot was really asleep. But I persevered
Dave
34:52
You're very brave.
Tara
34:54
Thank you. I am.
Dave
34:55
Alright, ready for the canon?
Tara
34:57
Yes.
Dave
35:00
By the way, I'm leaving all that in as well as on the other side of the ad.
Tara
35:03
No
Dave
35:04
It is time for the Extra Hot Great canon. Presenting this week is a recently relieved Tar Arietta.
Tara
35:12
Hi, uh It took a while for the full run of Mad About You, a second-tier musty TV sitcom of the 1990s, to be available on a subscription streaming platform. Now that it's here on Hulu, I can't recommend that you, dear listener, do a full watch or re-watch, and I can say that because I did do a full rewatch this year. Among my findings, season two, episode three, titled Bedfellows, is cannon-worthy, and here's why. Number one, it acknowledges its choogy reputation Bedfell is originally aired on NBC September thirtieth, nineteen ninety-three. It would be another two years almost exactly before Seinfeld aired its Season seven premiere, the engagement. current love interest for eating her peas one at a time. George is stuck. Clip one.
Clip
36:12
Hello? Hey MSG's rerunning the Yankee game. You watching this? They are. George, you coming to bed? I taped mad about you!
Tara
36:21
In real life, Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Reiser had known each other in the New York Stand-up world, that they were unfriendly enough terms was clear back in season one, episode eight of Mad About You, when we find out Paul's old bachelor apartment is currently being sublet by Cosmo Kramer. But by fall 1993, just after the series finale of cheers, the inventive Seinfeld was NBC's biggest sitcom hit. Mad About You was a more traditional, mostly grounded family comedy. Seinfeld's Mad About You gag, and there's also a tag in the same episode of George miserably watching the Mad About You opening credits while an oblivious Susan is merrily enthralled. Could not work if Mad About You wasn't popularly known as the less hip of the two. Both shows dealt in the banal minutiae of life, but having a married couple at its heart meant Mad About You precluded making comedy out of petty breakups It has to take petty fights, at least somewhat seriously, as in this episode when Jamie, Helen Hunt, has put some effort into making breakfast for herself and Paul, the aforementioned riser, who also co created the show with Danny Jacob And Jamie's been waiting tensely for them both to eat and or fight about it for hours, clip two.
Clip
37:30
Do you want coffee? No, you know no, I was gonna go to sleep. DCF?okay. Might be a little old. When did you make it? Two hours ago when you said you'd be home. Alrighty. Sweetie. Phone call would have been nice. It's it was the middle of the night. I didn't want to wake you up. Otherwise was to call you, wake you up to tell you that I'm not gonna be home until you're already up. Yes. There's no way I could know that. Also, your mother called. What'd she want? Just the usual. You know, she pleasantly diced me like a scallion and told me to tell you she called. You don't like it? Good. No, it's good. It's very it's great. You don't like it, you don't like it. Sweetie. I spend an hour and a half making you an omelet and you don't eat it. What do you mean an hour and a half? The first three wouldn't fold. It was it's delicious. You know what happened we we finished early, so I went out and I had breakfast with a couple of the guys. Fantastic What? Nothing. You know, I don't really think I should be penalized for missing breakfast, because in all fairness to me, you know, you and omelets, that's not like a pattern we've established. Don't worry, it will never happen again. No, come on. Look, don't
Tara
38:50
When someone who doesn't watch this show imagines what an episode is like, this is probably the sort of low stakes bickering they imagine, but Number two, this episode displays the show's greater ambitions. The episode is not about Paul and Jamie's conflict about breakfast, even though it's easy to imagine a version of that that is. After all the second ever episode of the show is all about conflict about shopping for a couch. While Jamie's still waiting for Paul to come home, she gets a call, clip three.
Clip
39:17
Hi Sylvia. No, I don't know where your son is. Uh still out shooting his film, I guess. Yeah, I even made breakfast for him. Well you don't have to believe me. Okay. Uh anything I should tell him? Okay. Bye-bye. Move to Florida
Tara
39:38
Jamie's in the process of stomping out to work when Ira shows up, clip four.
Clip
39:43
It's okay now, but your dad and I were working at the store this morning and he sort of collapsed. Oh my god. What do you mean what happened? No, no, it's it's fine. They got him at the hospital. Your ma says he's gonna be okay. Yeah, well don't trust my mom because according to her grandma's still taking a nap.
Tara
39:58
At the hospital, clip five
Clip
40:00
Hey, what does that mean? I don't have family hair.
Tara
40:05
From here, the episode becomes a masterclass in cramming the greatest amount of familial backstory into the fewest number of lines. It's hard not to clip this whole scene, but this segment is pretty representative. Clip six
Clip
40:18
Where did your kids park? On First Avenue. You got a really nice parking space, Uncle Bart. So what do you what did you do? Did you collapse? I tripped. You didn't trip. You could have parked right in front. Would you stop with the parking? Maybe your wife wants to sit down. Do you want to say that's okay. I say black, she says white. You should get back to the store. No, I am, but Marvin's there. Colo City's in Pennsylvania. You sent us 40 pair of golf shoes with no spikes? I got it covered. I sent him a check with no signature. So what did you do? He tried to move a pool table in the store by himself, idiot. It was fiberglass. Shame on you. Of course, if he had a little more help, he wouldn't be lifting things by himself. That's right, Ma. You know, this is all the result of a wrong career choice on my part. What did I say? I said a fact. It has nothing to do with you. Oh He's so sensitive. What are you starting with him? If you polish me off, it's his turn. You're next. Don't be so disrespectful. Then stop torturing everyone. You happy now? About what? You dropped out of graduate school to get married Wow.
Tara
41:29
Sometimes a crisis could spur the people involved to be the best version of themselves for one another. Jamie pretends to be this kind of person, for example. Clip seven.
Clip
41:38
Should I offer to have dinner with her tonight? Really? Well, it's hard having dinner alone. Go for it. You know what? Just by asking, you build up points. Sylvia, why don't we come by later and take you to dinner? Don't be silly. I'm gonna have a little something and then I'll go to bed. See, you still get the points. Um, maybe Paul and I should come by tonight and stay the night with you so you're not alone. Actually, that would be nice Shoot.
Tara
42:09
We hear her say shoot, I assume is a network note. It is clear to me when you look at her that Helen Hunt is mouthing shit. But anyway, the rest of the Buckmans just become the most version of themselves, which Jamie probably wishes she had done as well Number three, it doesn't overreach for the sake of a pat resolution. Having talked herself into spending the night in Queens with Sylvia, played by Cynthia Harris, Jamie tries to make the most of their time together, clip eight.
Clip
42:37
Look, you have a husband and I have a husband. We're women. We're family. And you can talk to me about how you feel. I want you to.
Tara
42:48
Sylvia stares and then smiles.
Clip
42:52
Paul, you know I ran into glory.
Tara
42:57
Sylvia shows her care and/or expends her nervous energy with passive aggression, forcing turkey on Paul, then saying he looks heavy, intruding on Paul and Jamie, and Paul's childhood bedroom so she can tell them she's turning the light off in the kitchen. Before fooling around in a room without a lock on the door, they move a dresser in front of it and put Paul's old mattress on the floor, uncovering an ancient Playboy These measures turn out to be premature, clip nine.
Clip
43:24
Uh yeah, just a second. Come here, come here, come here. Hold on.
Tara
43:29
They move the dresser.
Clip
43:30
What'd you do? Head traffic? Uh who is it? Don't be a comedian.
Tara
43:38
Put the mattress back
Clip
43:39
What are you doing? Uh we're voting. Yeah. Come in My God, can't you skip a night?
Tara
43:52
When everyone returns to the hospital the next day, they find out that Bert Lewis Zorek just has angina clip 10.
Clip
44:00
Oh tell me what's the good news? Oh you had a mild episode of angina. That's no, it's very common, Pop. They give you a little medication, you'll be fine. Are you a doctor? Oh no, it's more important. He should make movies. You know, it's funny, I saw that one coming, but I couldn't do anything. What are the chances of seeing a doctor today? He's down the hall. Oh, fine Somebody watching the kids? No, I dropped them off in Harlem on my way down. You're becoming a bitter divorcee. Maybe Jamie knows someone for you. You must be plenty of nice young men doing nothing but working all the time. Of course your brother meets nobody but film people. Three bullseyes. She doesn't even reload
Tara
44:45
Nothing's gonna change. Bert is gonna keep being a teddy bear, Sylvia is gonna keep being a battle axe, Sharon, Randy Graaff, is mentioned over the rest of the series, but never seen again, so I guess the doctor's note she claimed she was gonna get to be exp Excuse from Thanksgiving ends up covering the rest of her life. The most growth we get is from Jamie, clip 11.
Clip
45:05
Sorry about the omelet. What armor? From yesterday. I don't want to be that kind of wife. What kind of wife? Okay. I just talked to Dr. Shapira
Tara
45:15
So that bit of business is Bert's heart monitor speeding up whenever Sylvia enters the room and slowing down again when she leaves. Sharon panics that Sylvia is gonna kill Bert and then come with Sharon, but Bert cheerfully explains, of course his heart speeds up whenever the love of his life is around. Phew. Number four, there are even more gags that I can't clip. These include Jamie in a fit of peak throwing up both Paul's omelet and the plate she served it on. Ira taking the subsequently rescued omelette out of Paul's hand and eating it like a burrito, no questions asked. Sylvia openly trying to eavesdrop on Sharon and Paul, discussing her by coming over too straight in a picture frame on the wall behind them in the hospital room. Jamie choking on Sylvia's terrible coffee, Sylvia's completely dead eyed grins at Jamie's attempts to connect with her, Paul Preening in his canoe scented suede and leather jacket from high school Sylvia claiming she doesn't interfere in Paul's marriage and Paul stopping Jamie before she can respond by kissing her. I know Mad About You became a punchline, and not very long after this, but Bedfellows is good, and if you're not gonna vote it into the canon, at least drive safe. I'm sick of going to funerals.
Dave
46:25
Thank you, Tara. Kim, you want to take first crack?
Kim
46:28
Sure. Well, Tara knows I love mad about you. I don't care if it is a punchline. I don't think it's a punchline. Although Tara and I did have a lot of discussion about where specifically Jamie turns into a real B-word. I guess I can say bitch, I was probably talking around my children and had to use a euphemism, but you know, as the years go on, the show, like most shows especially when the actors are becoming more successful outside of the show. There was a lot of the feeling like especially Helen Hunt didn't want to be there. But this was before all of that hit. And I really enjoyed the nineties nostalgia feelings that it gave me with f Jamie's outfits, absolutely. The wall phone that she had to answer, the fact that nobody had a cell phone, so when they wanted to call people to tell 'em about Bert They had to find an actual phone. I love Bert so much. I had forgotten how much I love Bert. The second he appeared on screen, I was just so happy. My issue with this episode is I hate Sylvia so much And I don't I don't remember hating her this much until I've rewatched this episode in a way that I don't find funny. I just find upsetting the fact that everyone else just kind of like laughs it off or like makes comments to each other. I was like, she's a terrible person. You guys should not talk to her anymore. And maybe that's just how sitcoms have changed. Maybe they wouldn't have a character this abrasive in in today's sitcoms and I've just gotten unused to it. But that was my big issue with the episode uh that otherwise I loved.
Dave
47:54
Kim's version of this episode is they just go no contact and after two minutes.
Kim
47:57
Yeah. Yeah. Rescue Bert and everybody's happy.
Sarah
48:01
Mm-hmm. I was on the fence about this because You know, I had a southern mother in law, may she rest. Sh she won't. They can't. Ble bless her heart
Dave
48:15
She won't
Sarah
48:16
But there is a lot of overlap between Miss Evelyn and Ms. Sylvia. I'm turning off the lights in the kitchen is the most older person information sharing ever. And it just reminded me how many times I tried to like this show because I think Paul Riser is one of the funniest parts of Diner, which has a lot of funny parts in it and like anytime he's on screen it's like, you know what your problem is? You don't chew your food. Like I I mean I can just do his monologues from that entire I won't But there are so many little lines like that in his delivery of just like, she doesn't even reload, or like, I saw that one coming, I couldn't do anything. This really is what it's like to be dealing with this like personality-disordered mother-in-law who is just terrible to deal with. Like she's not a bad person. She's just completely zero fun.
Tara
49:13
Relentless
Sarah
49:13
to be around. And Helen Hunt's performance also got at that like futile efforts that you know are in vain to sort of be like, like he says, get the points without actually having to do anything. Like it's just it was just a constant battle and in the end I lost somehow. Anyway, a bunch of wonderful exchanges really like jumping each other's lines really well Again, I'm turning off the lights in the kitchen is when I was sold.
Dave
49:41
Yeah.
Sarah
49:42
And then there was a callback to it that it's like, what if she has other lights that she has to turn off? She comes back in here, there's not a lock on the door, like
Tara
49:49
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
49:49
Perfect. I'm turning on the outside light. Okay, Dad. Thanks for that.
Tara
49:54
For me, it's even before we hear her voice when she says, I just made him breakfast, pause. You don't have to believe me on the phone. Anyway, go ahead.
Sarah
50:03
Yeah, you don't have to ble uh just I mean little throwaways like actually you can't cram a mackerel like of course that's Such a polarizer thing to to leave in. Um, there's yelling about the Mets, but they didn't dwell on it, which was nice because at that at this particular time, uh As in the one we're in today. Best not to dwell on it for too long. But uh yeah, I thought this was really well observed and as Tara mentioned, like it's not overreaching. Like it knows that the script and the show know that it can do this really well and just like color to the very edges of this canvas. I agree that Sylvia's exhausting, but it's a familiar and verite exhausting to me. And that dead-eyed smile when Jamie is just herniating herself trying to get credit or relate was was really good. But this was a treat, but also made me relieved that I'm not in that particular situation with an in-law anymore.
Tara
51:04
One historical note before we throw it to Dave. This was directed by Tommy Schlamy, future West Wing director. So, yep.
Sarah
51:10
I did note that
Dave
51:11
Yeah.
Tara
51:12
Dave.
Dave
51:12
Just some minor observations to add what everybody else has been saying about this episode. I don't think I'd want to put a thin dinner plate in the oven even if it's just a warm The food. It looked way too delicate to actually put in an oven that way. I feel like it would snap as soon as you try to get it out. Other kitchen observations? Marine blue booze bottles. are super tacky, don't put them in your house. Certainly don't hang them on your bottle tree in your front yard.
Sarah
51:40
Fairy nineties
Dave
51:41
Extremely 90s. But I still see them around here. All the people that bought their house for two dollars in Austin in the nineties have blue bottle trees in their front here. Paper milk cartons, remember those? Before we had the screw off lid, you'd had to like rip apart the spout and the spout was always sour milky because it just was a sponge and you just had this
Sarah
51:52
Mm-hmm.
Tara
51:55
Mm-hmm, yep
Sarah
52:00
Mm-hmm.
Dave
52:01
You had your milk coming out and it would pour over the distinctly yellower milk that has trapped in the paper and that just almost made me vomit thinking about that.
Sarah
52:09
Hey, why'd you hate milk as a kid, Sarah?
Dave
52:12
Yeah.
Sarah
52:13
That all that
Dave
52:14
The two moments that were my favorites was Ira, right? Jump Jumpow
Tara
52:19
Yes. Mm-hmm
Dave
52:21
Uh love your breadcrumbs. I think you undersold the moment with the omelet because Paul comes out to the door and he has the plate of omelet and he sort of like half-acidly offers Ira some omelet as a joke and then Ira rips off half the omelet. And then eats it. So there's like this caveman element to it where he's like, uh, and then he just like eats it freehand, which I thought was funny.
Tara
52:43
Mm-hmm.
Dave
52:43
And the other one is Helen Hunt, who I generally don't enjoy. Wow. Saying wow in that moment was like is definitely tiny canon line reading uh worthy.
Tara
52:49
Yeah, mm-hmm.
Dave
52:53
I thought that was really great.
Tara
52:54
Yep
Dave
52:55
I never really watched Mad About You actively, but I feel like I've seen at least half the series through Osmosis back in the day and then when Tara was doing her rewatch. This episode to me felt like with different characters swapped out. Feels like a Frasier episode.
Tara
53:11
Mm-hmm.
Dave
53:11
Like it feels like a Fraser plot line.
Sarah
53:12
Oh, sure.
Tara
53:13
I'll also say it reminded when I was initially started this rewatch, it was around when Long Story Short premiered on Netflix last summer.
Dave
53:20
Oh yeah.
Tara
53:22
which Paul Reiser is also in, his voice is the the father in the family. There's a lot of common common uh storytelling elements about what it's like to be in a Jewish family and have a Jewish parent of a certain age because the Mother in that show is very overbearing as well.
Dave
53:38
Mm-hmm. It surprised me how much I enjoyed it, considering it was from Mad About You. And the only first thing I think about Mad About You is Mad About Shu from The Simpsons. Crossing, oh this goes out for another 20 minutes.
Tara
53:49
Mm-hmm.
Dave
53:49
That's sort of how I felt about the show, but this surprised me. I thought it was funny, I thought it was quick and very clippy, and I I enjoyed it. So let's put this to the official vote. Kim Reed on defense, it sounds like
Kim
54:02
Yeah, I would first like to say thank you to God for giving me a mother-in-law after hearing all of your stories, who was crazy. But in a very enjoyable way. R. I. P. Lucy. Uh, we miss you. I have to vote no. I think there's funnier, better mad about you episodes. What are they? None of your business. I don't know. But this particular episode with Sylvia was just too much for me.
Dave
54:25
All right, Sarah.
Sarah
54:26
Yeah, it's a yes for me. I think this is the show doing everything that it sets out to do extremely well. And I laughed. And I'm gonna go turn some lights off. Dave.
Dave
54:35
Yeah, I agree. I I enjoyed this one. Alright, so it was close, but we got there. So That means Mad About You, Season 2, Episode 3, Bedfellows. You are hereby inducted into the Extra Hot Great Cannon.
Clip
54:59
Americans love a winner. Yeah. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
55:05
It's time to figure out who are our winners and losers of the week. Sarah has this week's winner.
Sarah
55:11
I do. It's Task Force giving Julianne Nicholson for season two
Tara
55:13
We're going to be able to do that.
Sarah
55:19
And she will be reprising her Emmy winning Mayor of East Town role, which I just love that this is the water ice verse now into it. Love both shows.
Tara
55:30
The uh DCCU, the Delco cinematic universe.
Dave
55:34
Hey loser tar
Tara
55:35
Well, first of all, I want to say thank you to Sarah for voting for it. And uh one of the other episodes that I flagged to possibly pitch in the future of Mad About You is uh literally called The Ride Home and It's What You Think It Is. So we'll see how that one goes.
Sarah
55:48
Hard talk, yes
Tara
55:51
My not uh sorry, my loser of the week, not not quite loser, my full-on loser of the week is the Hills star Kristin Cavallari. Who revealed that when she flies, she books herself in first and her children in coach. Uh, and this is not what makes her a loser. Do what you want. I don't care if your kids are in first.
Dave
56:09
But wait, wait, wait. I need just to clarify. Is she traveling with somebody else?
Tara
56:13
Yes.
Dave
56:15
Is there a nanny or something? Or is there kids just Okay.
Tara
56:16
Uh d not said. They that's not clear
Dave
56:19
I guess the youngest is nine.
Tara
56:21
Yes, they are her current her children are currently fourteen, eleven, and nine.
Sarah
56:24
Also, they're on a different flight.
Tara
56:26
Well, they might be for all she knows.
Sarah
56:26
Cool. No notes.
Tara
56:29
This is very let your children run wild and free, the idea of like, well, they can just go there and the community of strangers can look after them, I guess. As of last year, they still slept in her bed, so I guess she's just very selective about when she wants to spend time with them. And on a plane is not part of it. So good luck to anyone who finds themselves in coach with Kristin Cavallari's unattended children.
Dave
56:52
Well
Kim
56:53
Yeah, I want to say that I do not believe that the children of Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler behave themselves in any way on a plane or otherwise because they are both garbage people and and hopefully their kids will rise above, but mm, what are the ads?
Tara
57:01
Why? Mm-hmm. Right. Also I think they're not vaccinated, so again, good luck to anyone who's in coach with Kristin Cavallari's children.
Sarah
57:12
Oh, Jesus. All right.
Dave
57:14
It's just the plane, they'll be fine. It's not a disease vector, don't worry about it. Uh I've already forgot the thing I was gonna say, so uh there you go.
Tara
57:23
Speaking of disease vectors
Dave
57:25
Do you know what time it is?
Sarah
57:26
Yeah.
Tara
57:26
It um time to cough in your mouth
Dave
57:40

Dave
01:03:49
I'm just gonna give you a little pre-clue here.
Sarah
01:03:50
Ooh.
Dave
01:03:52
I think this clue can pretty much apply to anything this person has done on TV because I think all her shows are the same.
Tara
01:03:59
Oh, extra hint
Sarah
01:04:01
Mm.
Clip
01:04:02
Oh, we're

Tara
01:04:27
Yep. Yep
Dave
01:04:32
The last black unicorn.
Sarah
01:04:37
What year?
Dave
01:04:38
Oh, twenty seventeen, sorry, thank you. Twenty seventeen, the last black unicorn.
Tara
01:04:44
Tracy Morgan
Dave
01:04:47
The show is the last OG, but it's still not Tracy Morgan.
Tara
01:04:50
Oh my God. Oh, Tiffany had it
Dave
01:04:53
Tiffany had it is correct for one, and that is round one, so I would appreciate some scores.
Tara
01:04:58
Okay. Kim has nine points. Sarah and I are tied with eight a piece
Dave
01:05:04
Oh, that means that you two are in the Grosswirth Equalizer Challenge together!
Tara
01:05:09
Oh shit!
Kim
01:05:16
I should have tanked the first round so I could get the equalizer challenge.
Dave
01:05:19
All right, amongst yourselves, give me a number between one and six.
Tara
01:05:23
Four great
Sarah
01:05:24
It's gonna say two, so three it is.
Dave
01:05:26
Okay. Alright. You have selected the original T V box expansion, the blue box.
Tara
01:05:32
Okay, blue.
Dave
01:05:32
So we've got Yeah. It's it's blue uh if I took the red out of purple is what I meant to say.
Tara
01:05:40
I see
Dave
01:05:40
Um but I didn't, so it's purple. I hope you all enjoyed that.
Tara
01:05:44
Visual joke.
Sarah
01:05:45
Fascinating, fascinating audio content.
Tara
01:05:47
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:05:48
All right, just to remind you, um, we've got categories in this box, so we're just gonna use one card. And I'm not sure if we did that before, so I'm just gonna pick one from a little deeper in the deck. Here we go.
Tara
01:05:58
What are what do we get?
Sarah
01:05:58
How do the points work?
Dave
01:06:00
You get to watch me turn on a brighter light so we can read this. Alright, here's what's at stake. Four points if you get three together, and if you manage to sweep it, we're gonna give you six. Alright?
Sarah
01:06:12
Okay.
Tara
01:06:13
To split okay, got it
Dave
01:06:13
But y to split. So if you get four points each get two.
Sarah
01:06:15
Okay.
Dave
01:06:17
Classics. Who did Frank Fontaine play in the Joe and the bartender skits on the Jackie Gleason show?
Clip
01:06:23
Oh, it was
Tara
01:06:27
Fuck off.
Dave
01:06:27
Ah guess you're not getting that six points Uh any other guesses
Tara
01:06:30
Oh my God.
Sarah
01:06:31
Even even I'm not that old. The bartender
Tara
01:06:37
I mean Who was the i who was the guy that played Ar sh I'll I'm just gonna say Art Kearney 'cause he was also in the honeymooners because
Dave
01:06:45
Well, it's a character.
Tara
01:06:46
Yeah.
Dave
01:06:46
Who did Frank Fontaine play?
Tara
01:06:47
Oh, that's the actor.
Dave
01:06:49
Yeah. It doesn't matter, you're never gonna get it.
Tara
01:06:50
Um Bill the drunk. Oh.
Dave
01:06:53
CRAZY Guggenheim.
Tara
01:06:54
You're right, I wouldn't have
Sarah
01:06:56
Wow.
Dave
01:06:56
Hey.
Sarah
01:06:57
As opposed to regular old Guggenheim.
Dave
01:06:59
Yeah. Sitcoms.
Sarah
01:07:01
Fuck
Dave
01:07:02
What type of writing did Oscar Madison do in The Odd Couple?
Tara
01:07:06
He was a sports sportswriter, right?
Sarah
01:07:08
Yes, correct.
Dave
01:07:09
You are correct. Drama. What seventies cop often wisecracked, Who Loves Ya, baby?
Tara
01:07:16
Go deck.
Dave
01:07:18

Tara
01:07:21
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:07:21
What nineteen seventy-nine show did NBC mistakenly think would rekindle the Flintstones fire?
Tara
01:07:29
The new Flintstones? I don't know.
Sarah
01:07:31
Pebbles and Bam Bam, was that the name of it?
Clip
01:07:31
I am on the I want to go with Empire.
Tara
01:07:33
Sure, let's say that
Dave
01:07:34
You're collectively very close, but not on the Mark.
Clip
01:07:34
I want to take a recon I am on the I want to go with Emble, I want to take a reconcile.
Dave
01:07:37
It was called the New Fred and Barney Show Yeah. Alright.
Sarah
01:07:42
Oh just don't stop
Dave
01:07:42
You need one of these last two to collect your points.
Tara
01:07:44
Okay
Dave
01:07:46
This is stars.
Tara
01:07:48
What what the listener can't see is that Sarah has two fingers up and her Zoom window is going crazy with balloons of celebration for us not getting this yet. Okay.
Dave
01:07:58
Stars. What CBS Newsman was affectionately nicknamed Uncle Walter.
Tara
01:08:03
Walter Kronkite Wee.
Sarah
01:08:04
Cronkite
Dave
01:08:08
Two points apiece to add to your total. So I believe now you're both one point ahead of Kim
Tara
01:08:12
That's correct.
Sarah
01:08:13
Yes
Dave
01:08:13
Let's get back to it. Round two, a little harder.
Clip
01:08:15
Don't vote ring both the colour and both layers.
Dave
01:08:16
Three points for the answer, one point after the hint. So if you can get it off the break, you're gonna get a lot more points. Starting back with Kim, year in the title, 2020. The title is I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are. I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are. The author is a TV actor or personality. You can guess at each level. If you don't know it here, we'll give you the TV show.
Kim
01:08:38
I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are is a book that was written by
Dave
01:08:41
Yeah. That's correct. Yes.
Kim
01:08:46
Some weirdo who's not normal and is not me. I'm gonna say 2020, huh? Jon Hamm. I have no idea.
