It’s time for the August Forcening, and listener Wendy has ordered us to watch the “What Makes A Salad Exciting?” episode of In The Test Kitchen, a video podcast spun off from America’s Test Kitchen. Once we got over having been bamboozled into discussing something that is not TECHNICALLY a TV show, we were able to critique it as though it were, and critique it we do! Ask EHG features questions inspired by recent topics Lanterns and Reacher, among many other areas of inquiry. Sarah pitches the Big Mac ingredients song for the Tiny Commercial Jingle Canon. Then, after naming the week’s Not Quite Winners and Losers, Extra Credit is once again given over to a Non-Regulation Game Time: this one all about TV stars-turned-cookbook authors. Shake up that vinaigrette and join us!

I happen to be sitting with a lot of people who have very strong opinions about salads.
Dave
00:11
This is the Extra Extra Hot Great Podcast, episode 425 for the August 22nd, 2026 weekend. I am White Lady Smitten by generic Asian salad David T. Cole, and I'm here with, oh I don't know how to say this word, tomato aspic, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:34
What you call me
Dave
00:36
And joyless chewing Tara Ariano
Tara
00:38
Hell yeah
Dave
00:44
I had an ass pick once and uh let me tell you it gets everything up.
Tara
00:50
Welcome to Extra Hot Great for another weekend. Thank you so much for your support. Thank you for being here and thank you especially to Wendy, supplier of the August Forcening Topic. Wow.
Sarah
01:15
Well shit Oh
Tara
01:17
I'm just gonna wait.
Sarah
01:34
Oh no.
Dave
01:37
Oh no!
Sarah
01:38
Uh don't get up, we'll divorce ourselves.
Dave
01:38
Alright, well thanks for coming everybody. We'll see you next time at next extra. Mm-hmm
Tara
01:47
Yes.
Dave
01:49
Yeah.
Tara
01:52
Thank you especially to Wendy, supplier of the August Forcening Topic. It is the In the Test Kitchen episode: What makes a salad exciting? Features hosts taking you behind the scenes of their bustling kitchen. Pretty much exactly what its title promises. A discussion of salad history, hosts' salad preferences, and a taste test of three different salads Wendy writes, it's four collegial people sitting together and talking about food and life. It made me think of EHG.this particular episode they talk about salad, which I know some of you make and eat regularly. But it's the very end of the episode that made me laugh and think of you all. It's just pleasant. Let's do the Chen check-in, Sarah. Should our listeners watch in the test kitchen?
Sarah
02:41
I think if you are having trouble sleeping, this could be soothing slow TV.otherwise, no.
Dave
02:48
I think if you're about to die, this is great because it make the last few minutes of your life feel like six months.
Sarah
02:56
Wow.
Tara
02:57
It's a no for me as well. Let's get into it. First things first. This is not a TV show, per se. I went looking for this on IMDB and Wikipedia. I tried drilling down both of those via the hosts' names. Nothing came up. I finally found that blog post. on the official website for America's Test Kitchen that I quoted earlier and found that this is in fact a video podcast, which had I realized this before we announced it would have made me switch topics, but we're here now and I don't blame Wendy for the chicanery. There's nothing on the actual page on Netflix that tells you What kind of program this actually is. So, Dave, when we were talking about this yesterday, it sounded like you could tell there was something off about it.
Dave
03:41
Yeah, it's just a podcast with all that implies.
Tara
03:42
Mm-hmm.
Dave
03:44
I mean, it's just like a hang podcast with people that seem like they know what they're talking about, but apparently don't. A lot of the times. This show made me really angry.
Tara
03:54
Yeah
Dave
03:54
It made me want to apologize to Pete Davison.
Tara
03:59
Let's let's not get crazy.
Dave
03:59
I mean, there's worse out there, Pete.
Sarah
04:00
That's angry.
Dave
04:02
Thank you for your service. This made me so angry.
Tara
04:06
Mm-hmm.
Dave
04:07
I was so angry after I was watching this.
Tara
04:09
Okay.
Dave
04:09
Like, yeah.
Tara
04:10
Why?
Dave
04:11
Uh, because well first of all, and this is on me, reading the title, which is what again, the episode title
Tara
04:14
Hm. It what makes a salad exciting
Dave
04:20
Sounds like it was like Julia Child era show and that was just like a silly title that they were taking very earnestly back then. So first problem was I thought this was a retro show and then I turned it on and some nephthlike shit.
Tara
04:32
Oh yeah.
Dave
04:34
Problem number one, again, that's on me But the content is so fluffy and inconsequential and often just meaninglessly wrong and should have been on the editing floor. That the whole thing, even though I started watching at a sped up speed at a certain point, 'cause I was like homooo and huffin', it was
Tara
04:56
And it's twenty-four minutes long, by the way.
Dave
04:57
It's only 24 minutes long, but still. And then just a a lot of things that people say that that made me angry. It was just flabby.
Tara
05:05
Mm-hmm.
Dave
05:05
And it made me made me upset.
Tara
05:06
Sarah, Sarah.
Dave
05:08
On a personal level. On a meta molecular level.
Tara
05:11
Uh-huh.
Dave
05:11
Sarah?
Sarah
05:12
Yes.
Tara
05:13
Did you feel there was something off about it?
Sarah
05:16
I did. It was when uh the one host got up and then another host was describing his outfit. And I was like, oh, this is really a podcast. This just seemed like the kind of HGTV Food Network After Dark show that is just like Filler.
Tara
05:37
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
05:37
I was annoyed that nobody spoke up to condemn Frisé, which I hate, like it's a person who slapped me one time. This was extremely slow. It was not all that informational. Like if they were sort of getting into the history of like You know, here's why raw vegetables were, quote, not popular for a long time. Like talk about how people thought tomatoes were poison, because they're relatives of the nightshade. anything that's not information that we already have and sort of lovingly but not lovingly enough shot salad. Like what makes a salad exciting? Nothing. Knowing that it'll be over soon and you can get to the protein.
Dave
06:23
What if there was a hand grenade under all the salad stuff? And if you fork it the wrong way, you pull the pin.
Sarah
06:31
That's not exciting exactly. That's traumatizing and scary. And okay, salad go boom. Nope, still not that exciting.
Tara
06:41
Mm-hmm.
Dave
06:41
What was the show where Salad goes boom? Dismantled?
Tara
06:44
Yes, yes.
Dave
06:44
But also I'm I'm thinking of the bowl in Hollywood game night. The bowl of glitter or whatever it was.
Tara
06:49
Oh, yeah, yeah, mm-hmm.
Dave
06:50
Yeah
Sarah
06:50
Or it's like operation, but with salad, it takes a steady hand.
Dave
06:52
Yeah, that's right.
Sarah
06:55
Oh, there goes your hand.
Dave
06:56
You only want the chicken parts. Uh oh
Tara
07:01
Yeah
Dave
07:01
Okay, there's some actual questions they bring up that also were part of the reason why I got angry at this.
Tara
07:08
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:09
There is the what defines a salad conversation, which nobody was prepared for.
Tara
07:12
Yeah. Yeah, that that was strange.
Sarah
07:15
Yeah
Dave
07:17
The definitions were all over the map from it's something at room temperature, which could describe the books on my bookshelf.
Tara
07:24
mm
Dave
07:25
And they were trying to come up with rules for salads, right? You know, what what actually is defined a salad. And they're going on about tuna salad and chicken salad and Potato salad, jello salad. And here's my rule to add to their list. If you stick your hand in your salad bowl and you throw that goo against the wall and it sticks, not a salad.
Tara
07:50
Yeah, that's fair
Dave
07:51
I want to see my salad bounce off the wall and fall on the floor and I'll just eat it there.
Sarah
07:56
But also, did you just show up and get this topic five minutes before you started?
Dave
07:59
Yes.
Tara
08:01
Yeah
Sarah
08:02
Like, okay, the history of salad as a starter versus a like palate cleanser. Talk more about that.
Dave
08:08
But part of that was like the history of Salad. And the guy's like, the Romans gave us the origin of the word lettuce.
Tara
08:11
Yeah.
Dave
08:14
And they're like, alright, any follow-up to that? No, okay. Just some Roman word, I guess.
Tara
08:19
Yeah.
Sarah
08:19
Well, and on top of everything else, like watching this now, when like actually salads are bombs gut bombs. Like, you know, it's like iceberg is underrated. I'm like, you know, not really.
Dave
08:32
Yeah.
Sarah
08:33
Not by the makers of Tidy Bowl, it's not. Like when I'm getting a Update from Gothamist like every two weeks, and it's like, Bulletin, is it safe to eat salad yet? And they're like, no. Anyway, Mom Donnie did this. Like, oh my god.
Tara
08:44
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
08:46
Guys
Dave
08:46
Madani started using cabbage. News at eleven.
Sarah
08:51
I know absolutely
Dave
08:53
Socialist cabbage
Tara
08:57
This production also, in addition to how unprepared everyone seems, if you're watching with the captions They are clearly AI generated. They misspell all of the hosts' names. Like that's the level of oversight.
Sarah
09:09
Yeah
Dave
09:10
Mm-hmm.
Tara
09:11
Everyone's name is spelled wrong in the captions I saw.
Dave
09:13
Wow. There's a little game they play, and it's very special because they never play games on this show. And the guy has five jars of dressing, and he has to guess what everybody's dressing is.
Tara
09:24
Yes Okay, first of all, let me interrupt. He he gives this game to himself and he says, I'm going to play therapist, which like if this is therapy, I guess I don't know how therapy works, but go on.
Dave
09:33
Yes Well, in a in a therapy session, what you would usually do in this context is unscrew the jar of dressing and pour it all over that person's face and chest and kind of rub it in for a bit.
Tara
09:51
Oh, okay.
Dave
09:51
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I guess you've never been to therapy.
Tara
09:52
Mm-hmm. Right, no, I haven't.
Sarah
09:54
Emulsion therapy
Tara
09:55
Hmm
Dave
09:56
So this guy does this game, which is not really a game. He's like, okay, you seem like a vinaigrette person, you seem like a blue cheese person, with like such minimal reasoning. That it just could have been like, here's some product placement, just show it to the camera, sort of Waynes World style, and move on with your life.
Tara
10:14
Yeah.
Dave
10:17
Gets every single one wrong, and then that's the end of the game.
Tara
10:19
Yes, he does.
Dave
10:20
There's no like this is why I'm actually a blue cheese person, by the way, Fuck off blue cheese.
Tara
10:20
Yep
Sarah
10:21
Mm-hmm. How dare you?
Tara
10:27
Okay, well I that was I was gonna ask if those were the five choices and they are creamy Caesar, blue cheese, balsamic vinaigrette, ranch, or hot sauce, which is Nick's out of the box choice. You're obviously not blue cheese, Dave. What are you having of those choices?
Dave
10:42
I mean I like hot sauce and stuff, but not directly on a traditional salad.
Tara
10:47
Yeah.
Dave
10:47
Like w I have my standard salad that I make, which is cabbage based, because I like the crunch.
Tara
10:54
Uh-huh.
Dave
10:54
And I will put in wheat meat with hot sauce like marinated in hot sauce and that goes on top, just kind of like a chicken Caesar or something like that. But I don't think I would like actually dribble Frank's hot sauce on top of the salad.
Tara
11:07
Yeah
Dave
11:07
Of those, probably would have to go vinaigrette, just because I just tend towards the non-buttermilk-based ones
Tara
11:13
Mm-hmm. Sarah sounds like your blue cheese would be your choice.
Sarah
11:16
I think so, yeah.
Tara
11:18
Ranch for me 'Cause they don't have craft creamy cucumber in America. And that is a problem with this country. I'm gonna say it, the biggest problem with this country right now.
Sarah
11:28
What I would actually do is Dijon and a little oil, which someone mentioned.
Tara
11:30
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Sarah
11:34
Mustard greens. I like those.
Tara
11:36
Mm-hmm. Nick did try to pander to you, Dave, with this. Let's hear clip three.
Clip
11:41
Most exciting salad you've ever had. Oh gosh. Buffalo chicken salad. Really? Because of heat. Sweet screens, yeah. Really? Yeah from Sweet Creek. That's the most exciting sell. You know, it's I like fried chicken. I like the fact that I can get the textures I want and I need the protein and it has a little bit of that heat going on in there so it against all those different like Temperatures and everything. And by the way, there's some greens in there. There's some greens in there. No mixed greens. I'm not a huge mixed greens fan, but yeah, same, same.
Sarah
12:11
So why do this episode if everyone is sort of like salad fae?
Dave
12:18
Yeah.
Tara
12:18
Yeah.
Sarah
12:19
Like, I get it, but you don't have to do the episode then.
Dave
12:21
Yeah It's like uh sassy magazine giving the rap review to somebody's like, I don't like rap, but here we go Yeah. And also if your favorite salad is the one you buy, I mean, are you really immersing yourself as a chef-adjacent personality in the process if you're just buying it from sweet creens?
Tara
12:41
Right.
Dave
12:41
There's a lot of that in this episode. There was a few things that I was like, okay, I mean, yes, that is right. Raw onions on a salad are very good and usually overlooked, as long as you don't go overboard with them.
Sarah
12:51
Mm-hmm.
Dave
12:52
I like to put both raw and pickled onions on my salad. And let me tell you, my fart stack
Tara
12:58
Yes. I would love to know why red onion always has to enter the space. Cause I they it was in all three of the salads that they taste tested and I fucking hate it. I would never choose to put that in a salad myself.
Sarah
13:08
I huh. I don't feel like there's any difference in taste, but if they are doing something visual, I suspect that that's why to
Tara
13:17
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
13:18
So that you can see it better, reads better on camera.
Tara
13:21
Yeah.
Sarah
13:22
Back in the day when um my brother and sister-in-law and I shared a domicile. Our birthdays are both in March, so we would go out for like a joint household, take each other out to dinner for your birthday place, usually at a fancy place that we wouldn't normally go.
Tara
13:36
Yeah,
Sarah
13:37
We went to Seuss or Lee's restaurant in the village one year and got that like signature salad that's like a foot and a half tall. It requires two people to sort of disassemble and serve it so it doesn't topple over Tower of Pisa style.
Dave
13:54
Uh
Tara
13:54
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
13:55
And it really is delicious. Like the composition is really thoughtful. It's vegan, but they can add like a little fried chicken layer if you want, I believe. That was a pretty exciting salad. It was like appetizer and a show.
Tara
14:13
Yeah, yeah
Sarah
14:13
Get on Sucer Lee's level. That's all I'm saying.
Dave
14:17
Oh, I I I'm sorry, I thought salads could not be exciting, and now I'm hearing there was an exciting salad in your life.
Sarah
14:24
Uh, salads after that salad cannot be exciting unless there's a bomb
Tara
14:28
Uh all right, so the first salad they taste test is the ultimate wedge salad. It's like half a head of iceberg lettuce cut into thirds with bacon, red onion, and roquefort. Obviously neither of you is gonna do bacon, but would you choose this salad if it was with fake bacon? Dave First.
Dave
14:44
Alright, well first of all, the wedge salad is the second greatest trick the devil ever played on humanity
Sarah
14:50
Yeah, I I know
Dave
14:51
What's the laziest salad we could do at this restaurant to get this shit out of the door quick? I know we'll just cut the lettuce into a giant chunk and let them deal with it
Sarah
14:56
mm
Tara
14:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
15:00
Wedge salad is just like the wrong form for me. I just don't like it. And plus like if it's iceberg lettuce, the closer you get to the core, the more inedible it is as it turns into that weird yellowy white whatever.
Tara
15:09
That's true. Mm-hmm.
Dave
15:13
So just like stem to stern.
Sarah
15:14
All ice, no burg.
Dave
15:16
Yeah.
Tara
15:16
Yeah
Sarah
15:16
Yep.
Dave
15:17
So stem to stern, no thanks, Sarah.
Sarah
15:19
Yeah, that's not going to be my choice here.
Dave
15:20
Yep.
Tara
15:21
Mm-hmm. Same. I I don't really love any of the ingredients other than bacon, and I agree it is very unwieldy. The thing about living in New York is it is so easy to get a decent chopped salad like anywhere in a three-block radius of where you're standing any given time.
Dave
15:33
Mm-hmm.
Tara
15:37
So that really spoiled me for non-chopped salads, but I know Dave thinks a chopped salad is for babies.
Sarah
15:41
Yeah. Well, then I then I am a baby because oh my god, like if I need a knife for this, also pit your olives.
Tara
15:46
No, same
Sarah
15:52
I am not a crackpot.
Dave
15:53
Well by pit you mean throw into the pit, yes.
Sarah
15:54
Something Greek
Dave
15:58
My deal with chopped salad is that you never get a choice of what you taste.
Tara
16:03
Mm-hmm.
Dave
16:03
You know, every bite is the same and I realize that's why I think it's for babies.
Tara
16:06
Or everybody's different.
Dave
16:08
What?
Tara
16:09
Everybody's different. Cause it's different stuff. It's so small. It's a different combination depending on how big your forkful is. Alright, moving on.
Dave
16:17
Yep
Tara
16:17
Next is a traditional Greek or village salad, aka Horiatiki. This is your classic cucumber, tomato, red onion, calamata, olive, feta cheese, which in this case is on top in giant wedges. Lon and Brian have a semantic argument about this salad we can get into in a second, but first I will say in theory I approve this form factor for cheese because it's a lot, but I think if you're getting a salad platter like we see in the episode and everyone just has to like break off a chunk from the cheese triangle, you're gonna be in, I think you should leave loaded nacho chip territory because everyone's gonna be like, Oh, they got more cheese than me.
Dave
16:53
Yeah The Greek salad has the problem of olives again for me.
Tara
17:00
Yes.
Dave
17:01
And I don't usually have Greek salad anywhere because I don't want to be the person who's like You know what makes a Greek salad really taste like a Greek salad? One of the two things is olives, the other one is feta cheese, and I'm gonna be like, I want my Greek salad without the Greek stuff, please.
Tara
17:11
Yes. Mm-hmm. But you can make that, you have made that at home with minus olives.
Dave
17:18
Uh kinda.
Tara
17:19
Have you not
Dave
17:20
But I would say if that form factor appeals to you, what you want to do is sidestep to Fatouche.
Tara
17:26
Yeah, I agree.
Dave
17:27
Which is sort of like the Middle Eastern version of that. It has like pita chips in it.
Tara
17:32
Mm-hmm.
Dave
17:33
And I don't think it has cheese by default, but if you got some of that grilling cheese, what was it called? Uh Humuli.
Tara
17:37
Hello, me.
Sarah
17:38
Halloumi.
Dave
17:38
Humuli? Yeah. Stick that in there. I think it would be delicious. So that's my recommendation.
Sarah
17:43
Halloumi goes in any salad so well.
Dave
17:45
Yeah.
Sarah
17:46
I live down the street from Tannerine and they have a uh watermelon and halloomy salad that sounds like people are like, are you sure? And then they can't stop eating it, including my husband who is like, a fruit or vegetable? Hell no. And he loves it. There's also cucumber slices that have been not pickled quite, but just sort of like marinated in this dill.
Dave
18:08
Yep.
Sarah
18:09
Zatar situation that oh my god.
Dave
18:11
Hmm, yeah.
Tara
18:12
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
18:12
Guys, I gotta go.
Dave
18:13
Yeah, me too.
Sarah
18:14
I'll be right back.
Dave
18:14
That sounds good. Get me one.
Sarah
18:15
Tannerine is a block away
Dave
18:16
Yeah.
Tara
18:17
Here's where Lon and Brian get into a fight, clip four.
Clip
18:21
The tomatoes were salted ahead of time so all the excess water comes out so the dressing isn't diluted when it hits the plate. There's no dressing. What do you mean? What's the whole point of this salad? It's tossed with like some vinegar. That's dressed. Stop the dressing? I've dressed my vegetables. Isn't dressing emulsified? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, no. Well, I just feel like um
Tara
18:42
Yes
Clip
18:44
I think if you're not if you're adding all of the ingredients that would go to into a dressing separately, like if they're going in one at a time, it's not a dressing. I disagree. I think the salad is dressed. Well it's but no, I don't disagree that it's I uh you're right, it's dressed, but I don't think it's dressed with the dressing. I d think it's dressed with vinegar and olive oil. I'm still gonna disagree. No, so imagine this. Yeah. Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and olive oil. Lemon and olive oil is addressing olive oil. No, it's because you didn't combine them separately first. Yeah. They still are addressing just because All of these dressings that we buy, they're all combined. Like when you think about a vinaigrette, combined. I feel like it's just combined in a different vessel. It happens to be combined with the other ingredients so it still constitute a dressing. So you're thinking like shaken and stirred kind of makes a dressing? No, he's thinking as long as it's in there it's a dressing. Yes yeah that's a good idea. Dump it
Sarah
19:43
Yeah. Oh my god. The word is deconstructed. Someone find it and get out of this conversation.
Tara
19:51
Yeah.
Sarah
19:51
We've been here for a week.
Tara
19:52
You're saying the same thing
Dave
19:54
Yeah.
Tara
19:54
But also I do think he's kinda wrong.
Sarah
19:55
Yeah.
Tara
19:57
Like if it's just like the pieces add up to dressing, that's not the same as dressing.
Dave
20:01
Yeah.
Tara
20:02
Like I I think she is she's closer.
Dave
20:04
I think what they're trying to say is dressing is a sort of considered concept. And that if you consider a dressing as a combination of things that'll get you closer to the spirit of dressing, then here are two things that go on top of your salad.
Sarah
20:20
Also everyone despairing over the basic nature of tomatoes, tomatoing, uh I just really makes me tired. Like Tomatoes are like the earth. They're like two-thirds water. Please accept this and stop sort of like tomatoes always ruin everything except when they're essential. Please stop. That's it's not editorial.
Dave
20:38
Yeah, you should look into sun-dried tomatoes. Well, I mean if you don't want the water, I'm saying we have a product.
Tara
20:44
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
20:45
Yeah.
Tara
20:46
Finally, this is the third salad, clip five

It's called Nom Sakmyan and it's a shredded chicken salad with a boatload of herbs, shredded cabbage, some red onion. What I love about it is the dressing is fish sauce, Thai chilies, garlic, and sugar. No oil. Real no real acidity here
Tara
21:06
The subtitles on this are a mess. They do not get close.
Sarah
21:10
Yeah, they just gave up.
Tara
21:12
They did.
Sarah
21:12
Yep
Dave
21:13
Piece and carrots, peace and carrots.
Tara
21:13
Again, neither of you is gonna be here for the chicken or the fish sauce, but otherwise, how does this one look and sound to you, Sarah?
Sarah
21:20
I am absolutely there for the fish sauce, and if they were able to substitute with a white fish or even a like an oily fish, like a bluefish that's a little stronger, they could use that. They could Cut up some shrimp. I'm a little more portable in this regard than Dave, but a salad like this, which actually reads to me more like a
Tara
21:36
Yeah
Sarah
21:41
burrito bowl without or without the rice, kind of. Like I love that, that it's like a one-pot sort of dish that does bring me back to the Sucer Lee Tower of Green Power, because there wasn't that much green in it, and there were a lot of different sort of umami flavors happening in it. If they could find a way to do something with the tofu or seitan or again a fish that's gonna be able to hold its own with a lot of strong Asian spices, I would be into it. Like even with the chicken, I was like, I could hack this. for a for a non-walked on land outcome.
Tara
22:20
Right.
Sarah
22:20
That sounded delicious to me. Dave?
Dave
22:22
Yeah, it's fine. You just have to make a lot of substitutions to get into the spirit of it and it's a lot of work, so pass.
Tara
22:27
Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm.
Sarah
22:30
Yeah.
Tara
22:30
T not to take it back to an earlier dispute on this podcast, but when I see cabbage, I think slaw and this looked like a slaw to me when they showed it from above, but this was the one that looked the best for me even though I would never go out of my way to eat cabbage personally.
Sarah
22:38
Mm-hmm.
Dave
22:44
Well, I mean the way she also describes it with a sugary dressing kind of makes me feel like but this would be for me sort of in the same general category as like a papaya salad, you know, which is great.
Tara
22:56
Yeah, yeah, mm-hmm, mm-hmm
Dave
22:58
I love them, but you know, it's like a sweet sort of thing.
Sarah
23:01
Well, yeah, and that's one of the things that like in American Thai food at least or like Vietnamese food too, sometimes there are sometimes these like competing for me flavors that are like, well here we are with pineapple and a pizza. Like I get what they're trying to do, but something here, like either mint or peanut, but if
Tara
23:23
Hmm.
Sarah
23:23
If it's both then I have to order something else, I can't I can't do that.
Tara
23:26
Right.
Sarah
23:27
So
Tara
23:28
So they're winding up when they get into grain salads. No thank you for me. And then dumpling salad, which I'm listening. And when they started talking about that, it reminded me of the time, Dave, you made a ravioli salad years ago and then never again.
Sarah
23:35
Mm-hmm.
Tara
23:41
And I still think about it, where it was basically just like cold ravioli in probably oil and vinegar, I assume, maybe not even oil.
Dave
23:49
Yeah.
Tara
23:49
And then with like diced different peppers and cheese and onion, probably.
Dave
23:54
Yeah.
Sarah
23:55
Yeah, I've done that.
Dave
23:56
It's just a bunch of cubed things.
Tara
23:56
Ugh, it was good. Mm-hmm.
Dave
23:59
I make it make that again for you, Sweetie Pie.
Tara
24:01
Please do, cause it was good.
Dave
24:02
Alright.
Tara
24:03
Finally, we arrive at what I think Wendy meant by the moment that made her think of us clip six.
Clip
24:10
Ooh, let's play Mary Date Kill. Can we do that? Date. I thought it was something else. Well it is, but it's Mary Mary Date Kill.
Sarah
24:18
Yes, Nick
Clip
24:21
Wait. D are we marrying With the idea that we will get divorced eventually. He's trying to keep his options open. I'm sure. But then you have to tell us what salad you're getting remarried to. Brian, I'm gonna save you from answering. Thank you so much for joining us on our salad journey. Join us next time. I'm gonna marry this one. I'm gonna Date the um Horatiki. Okay. Kill the wedge. And you're gonna divorce this one and get remarried to a Caesar? Probably. Probably eventually. Yeah. 20 years? Yeah. Okay.
Dave
24:58
Yeah, you know who likes that pivot? Sarah D Bunting, the one that doesn't follow rules for These games. Oh, a fourth option, sure, says Sarah. Let's go for that one.
Sarah
25:08
You're gonna kill all the salad, so I don't know. Why why am I the rogue here?
Tara
25:13
Yeah
Dave
25:14
Who never wants to hear the two words salad journey again in their lives? Cause my hands up.
Sarah
25:21
Mm-hmm.
Tara
25:21
Same.
Dave
25:21
Fucking Hell.
Tara
25:22
Yeah. I mean I get where she's going, but I also was like, oh god, is that what we sound like?
Dave
25:27
That was my first thought.
Tara
25:28
I hope not.
Dave
25:28
Uh-oh.
Tara
25:30
We can wrap up after this, but what is each of your answers to the titular question of what makes a salad exciting? I will go first. It is the stuff that is l not good for you, meaning cheese, bacon, chicken, hard-boiled egg, cold pasta. There are also ingredients I cannot be bothered to chop at home, but that I like when they're in the buffet at soup plantation, like Julian radish or celery. And um I also have peas there, which I could do at home and probably should. Sarah.
Sarah
25:59
Yeah, other items that sort of make the medicine go down, so cheese, onions, pickles, chickpeas, any like large dollop of creamy dressing, usually containing cheese.
Tara
26:11
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
26:13
Mostly what makes a salad uninviting is all the prep. So any salad I didn't have to make and could just sort of order off a menu of check boxes is uh a little more enticing or exciting, but yeah, I mean cheese, bottom line
Tara
26:26
Yeah. Dave
Dave
26:30
Two things that make a salad exciting. One, as you're eating the salad, your home or cafe is invaded by ninjas.
Sarah
26:38
Mm-hmm. Yep.
Tara
26:39
Uh huh, yep
Dave
26:40
Yeah. And uh two is a grenade inside of it By the way, uh that show may be the angriest I might have been.
Tara
26:55
You Dave really was in a bad mood for about an hour after you watched it.
Sarah
26:58
Over Salad
Dave
27:01
Actually the second thing that makes it exciting really is discovering new levels of stink that I can make. A couple hours later. Cause let me tell ya, it's fucking rank. Too much I got one in the chamber right now.
Tara
27:24
God, don't.
Dave
27:24
Can't I time it?
Tara
27:26
No, don't
Sarah
27:26
Throw some creamed onions on that wedge salad. Let's go. And Dave died. Dave go boom. Dave's dead.
Tara
27:44
You're the one who's gonna have to edit this.
Dave
27:46
Nope. Nothing Yeah, this is Ask E H G
Sarah
27:59
Oh, my God
Tara
28:04
My God.
Dave
28:04
Before we get into your questions, we must answer the ask. No, we must judge the ask, Ask EHG question from last week. It came from Jovial Gent. What TV soundtrack would make good restaurant background music? And I'm just gonna go straight to the one that played to the judge. It wasn't even close. Bizarr Laura, the Sanford and Sun theme. But with made-up lyrics about whatever food you're eating. Eating chicken, eating chicken pot pie, sure is tasty, eating chicken pot pie. So there's your winner. Bizar Laura, thank you very much. Hit me up on Discord or you can email me for your stickers. All right, let's get into your questions for us this week. First one from Seth. Seth wants to know, where would you like to see Reacher go next season? Space? Underwater or another dimension? What will he investigate and who is he punching? Darn.
Tara
28:59
Well he has to go somewhere that Toronto can credibly pass for, so I would say let's plop him down on the set of Star Trek Strange New Worlds, which already has a set there. And have him shoot his own space show between their shots. Like sometimes you can sort of see him in the background on Strange New Worlds, like just waiting for his turn.
Dave
29:18
Yeah.
Tara
29:18
And let's see him punch a damn gorn. Sarah
Sarah
29:23
This wasn't an option technically, but I am rationalizing it because time is a dimension. I'm going to send Reacher Back in time to post-war Los Angeles to try to solve the Black Dahlia murder, and he's gonna be punching LAPD because someone always should be. Dave.
Dave
29:39
I'm gonna put Reacher in Hawaii because I'm really curious if Reacher gonna have what we call Hawaii Dave mode. Which is Dave's super friendly when he goes to Hawaii for some reason and he can't stop being nice. So if Reacher was that, what would happen to Reacher? I think it would be an interesting exercise. Dix and chants. This season of Reacher has become Look Who's Talking Now. Who do you cast as the voice of Reacher's Kitten? Sarah.
Sarah
30:04
Sabrina Carpenter, Dave.
Dave
30:07
Fran Dresher Tar.
Tara
30:09
Kate Mikuchi.
Dave
30:11
Oh wow
Sarah
30:12
These are all good.
Dave
30:13
Dan Cassino strap in, suppose lanterns is a hit, which of the following terrible slash ridiculous Green Lanterns should be featured next season? One, chip, that's without an eye, little we got a little glottal stop there. The squirrel who's a green lantern, G'Nort, G'Nort, as it's spelled, the incompetent anthropomorphic dog comic relief Green Lantern Liesel Pond, the sentient smallpox virus, who is a Green Lantern. Kyle Rayner, a human Green Lantern, eventually channels all the powers of colors combined, and dispatches enemies with the quote, White Power And then Eric added, number five, Rot Lop Fan, a being whose species evolved without visual sense organs, who goes by F sharp bell. So those are your five choices. So here's my here's my thinking. So we're gotta go with see how Americans like their superheroes that are both, all the colors of the rainbow, and white supremacist. I think it's gonna heal the nation's soul.
Tara
31:15
I could not believe all of these are real, obviously, especially the white power guy, but uh that said the smallpox virus, cause Kate Mikucci can voice that character too. Sarah.
Sarah
31:25
Agree, and while we're up, yeah, Sabrina Carpenter can do that.
Dave
31:30
Drydendon has questions for each of us individually. Tara, you're up first. Tara! If you are asked to picture the friends opening credits, which actions are each of the six actors doing? For example, Drydendon always sees Monica putting her back in the fridge at the tropical Christmas party. So in your mind When you think of it, what's the canonical emotions for each character?
Tara
31:51
Okay, Rachel doing a good for me gesture thinking she got a central perk order right early in her tenure there when she did not. From Monica, it's her reaction to Chandler walking in with a mustache from the Richard era in season two, where she just sort of sadly is like, uh Phoebe flipping her ponytail off of her face while lying on the floor drinking. Joey presenting himself in all of Chandler's clothes, of course. Chandler waking up from a nap because Joey is drilling through the wall right next to his head and Ross playing his bad keyboard music.
Dave
32:26
Good answer. All right, Sarah, here's your question from Drydendon. What have been some of your best moments owning your bookstore
Sarah
32:32
Oh well, thank you for asking. First of all, there is a guy in the genre, I'm not gonna say his name, but he's sort of this legal/slash authorial Zelig figure in major cases in the latter half of the 20th century. He first shows up in Mailer's Executioner song in the culture, I would say. Anyway, um he nearly 90 years old Is alive and bought a book for me a few months ago, not one of his own books. I have had authors buy their own books for me in the past But that was kind of a kick. Going on a book buying day out of town is fun, just being in someone else's house and seeing how they're valuing true crime, not just the literal pricing, but like where it is in the layout esteem. of another generalist chop. I love finding so-called freebies in books and seeing what people used as bookmarks, like Where you know, what flight was this used to pass the time on? What was being eaten for lunch when you couldn't put the book down? Was this taken to the beach or the pool? Can I tell? But mostly it's just being in my basement lair researching authors who were once leading figures in the genre and now nobody really remembers them. It's Kind of a shame, but also kind of fun because uh Egghead loves her bookie wooks. Uh the smellier the better
Dave
33:52
Alright, and Drydendon's question for me is Dave, how many dogs is too many dogs? We for a long time when we had Gordon, the first dog, he was the only dog. And then we got Murray, and even though Gordon was a stick in the mud, sometimes they would play together. And I thought, I think maybe two dogs is the minimum we should have in a house, generally speaking. But then sometimes two dogs is too much. And usually that's when you have to walk them individually at night because Sandy is a terrible leashed dog creature.
Tara
34:20
Yes.
Dave
34:21
She is not happy on the leash when other dogs are living within a mile radius. Otherwise, really great with dogs. She's great at the daycare and everything.
Tara
34:30
Love staycare.
Dave
34:30
It's just on the leash. Yeah. Usually I'm gonna say too many dogs would be something approaching the number four, probably, but usually I'm gonna say two is okay, but not always. Johnny essay, Netflix recently announced a reality show called The Leftovers that appears to be entirely unrelated to the acclaimed HBO drama. Pitch a reality show that's actually based on the HBO drama, Tara.
Tara
34:56
Oh, whoops. I missed that part of it. Because my answer is A competition show where you have to impress Michelin chefs with dishes made from leftovers. So how you make it actually based on the HBO drama is that if your dish is not chosen, you poof away and no one ever sees you again.
Sarah
35:12
Or you have to use two percent milk.
Tara
35:14
Mm-hmm, Sarah.
Sarah
35:15
I don't know how you do this as a competition show. Actually, I think it has to be like longitudinal documentary reality, some kind of from or the prisoner but in real life scenario where an entire small town agrees to participate. And the show was just a running account of the townsfolk who weren't yeeted into whatever dimension, which is actually a nearby garden Hilton. They are provided for. Parents of children are not separated. They're just trying to figure out what happened to the two percent who were. And I'm not saying I wouldn't watch this, but I just don't know how you do it logistically from a production standpoint or for how long I don't know how you create a competitive element. Push Nevada tried. That didn't go well. So that's that's my idea. I don't think it's possible. Dave.
Dave
36:02
Uh skilled ninjas silently take your baby from your back seat when you're not looking and you must find them.
Sarah
36:09
Jesus,
Dave
36:10
Jovial Gent, what 80s sitcom star do you want to see lay down a cover of an 80s song?
Tara
36:10
Well
Dave
36:16
Sarah
Sarah
36:17
John Ratzenberger's putting on the Ritz. Now it's putting on the Ratz and Burger. Dave.
Dave
36:24
BB New Earth covering White Snakes Here I Go Again.
Sarah
36:28
Yes, winner.
Dave
36:28
Gave myself a little boner just thinking about that one.
Sarah
36:31
Mm-hmm.
Dave
36:32
Try.
Tara
36:33
You may be right, Billy Joel's, you may be right by Jerry Burns of Dear John Fame.
Dave
36:38
Nice. Kara has a question for us. Please pick a John Williams movie soundtrack or a Moraconi soundtrack to play as your neighborhood's ice cream truck music. The ice cream truck coming, what's it playing? I think if y it actually played the theme from the mission, that would be really funny. Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum. But what I think would be even funnier
Clip
37:20
Lucia come si vede.
Tara
37:31
Uh it's gonna be Raiders of the Last Arc by John Williams and also thank you for rubbing it in that we don't have a neighborhood ice cream truck and that's the ice cream truck communities Big mistake. Huge, because I would be getting it, I'm gonna say, every other time.
Dave
37:46
Why aren't there more ice cream trucks in Austin? It's perpetually two thousand degrees outside.
Tara
37:51
Yes.
Sarah
37:51
Mm-hmm
Tara
37:52
Great question
Dave
37:52
It yeah. Sir
Sarah
37:54
Well, thanks to the dingus in my neighborhood who already made the Imperial March from Star Wars his carhorn to go with this tricked-out Hyundai Iroll.
Dave
38:05
Wow.
Tara
38:06
Are you sure this person is not a Sith Lord?
Sarah
38:09
No, actually I'm not.
Tara
38:09
Great. Well, look into that. Go on
Dave
38:12
Yeah, look into it.
Sarah
38:13
Yeah, I just I don't think so. Like the purple neon undercarriage, that's not a scythe thing.
Dave
38:18
Look 'em up on the gram
Tara
38:21
Anyway, go on.
Dave
38:23
Sith Sith dot Sarah's neighborhood. Okay, go ahead.
Sarah
38:26
Yeah. I'm sure I'm sure I'll find it in no time. I think actually the Superman theme would match the um reaction to the arrival of the ice cream truck, at least on my block, so let's go with that.
Dave
38:34
Hm, yeah Rightwood, what would you call the class of show that was popular or well regarded in its time and and doesn't quite not exist anymore, but you would be surprised to hear that someone was currently watching it? Examples they provide hung or unreal So what would you uh classify that as Tara?
Tara
38:56
I first started out with It's Something From Showtime because those shows like
Sarah
39:00
Mm
Dave
39:00
Yeah.
Tara
39:01
They go on forever and then they just sink into the merc and are never seen again.
Sarah
39:05
Yeah
Dave
39:06
Yeah.
Tara
39:06
And my answer is, for personal reasons, the United States of Terra. Dave.
Dave
39:11
Uh I'm gonna go with a really shitty answer here, and because when I think about it, most shows you know like given how many shows actually get pumped out every month.
Tara
39:17
Ajá, yeah, mhm
Dave
39:23
Sarah?
Sarah
39:25
This was a fun question. I immediately listed a bunch of shows I thought qualified and then was like, oh yeah, like Tara said, they are pretty much all on Showtime or were on FX. But what do you exactly call it? Like B list Empire? Memory Hole of Fornication was one I came up with that I think is bad shows of a certain age?
Dave
39:41
Yeah
Sarah
39:48
Like People really liked him.
Dave
39:49
Yeah.
Sarah
39:50
People watched the whole run, but like, would anyone go back to them if they hadn't seen weeds or damages?
Dave
39:55
Yeah. Oh, I know what it is.
Sarah
39:59
I don't think so.
Dave
40:00
Wedge Salad chose.
Tara
40:03
Speaking of which, you gotta close the food portal.
Sarah
40:03
Hmm.
Dave
40:05
No, I don't.
Sarah
40:06
Yes, you do.
Tara
40:06
Oh no, you don't!
Dave
40:06
No, I don't.
Sarah
40:07
Oh no, you you can't yet, that's right.
Tara
40:08
You're right. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Dave
40:09
Yeah, that's right. Yeah, apology accepted.
Sarah
40:10
Don't worry, I have that note coming up.
Tara
40:11
Sorry.
Dave
40:11
All right. Here's here comes your Ask EHG question to answer. It comes from me. I want to know: what are your pointless claims to fame? So go to our Discord, Ask Ask EHG channel, put your answer there, or go to the episode page on our site. And there is a little box there. You can send your answer in. All right. That's it for us. Thank you. Bye. For now, but wait, we're back. Here we go. What's happening? What's happening? It is time for the Extra Hot Great tiny cannon presenting this week is a tiny Sarah D Bunting.
Sarah
40:50
Oh, hello! You may not remember the order of the elements in the periodic table. You may not remember how to make a mash cootie catcher or your sixth grade locker combo or whether your parents let you stay up to find out who did shoot JR eight months after that cliffhanger But if you are a Gen X English speaker, you fucking ain't know what's in a McDonald's Big Mac. Why is that? Get ready for an afternoon school bus flashback. Clip one
Clip
41:21
McDonald's Big Mac. It's more than just another hamburger. There are two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a sesame seed bun. Seven great ingredients working together to make one great taste. Two all beef patties, special sauce, cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun. Get the idea? Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun. It's your McDonald's big Mac. You've got to taste it to believe it. You know what I mean? Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles on your dance as we see fun. Two all beef patties Let me say a few worries about McDonald's Big Mac. It's a it's it's two all beef paddy, special sauce, patties, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bug. Too all. Well what what was that word again? Two old beef paddy special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bug. Lettuce cheese cheese pickles onions, lettuce Uh Gilma- Oh, what am I saying? You deserve a break today at McDonald's. Where your dollar gets a break every day.
Sarah
42:20
I did not realize that this legendary jingle, paired here with another iconic McDonald's tag, You Deserve a Break Today. was written by hamburger creator Keith Reinhard of DDB Worldwide, whose team also authored State Farms Like a Good Neighbor jingle. I didn't know Mark Vieja composed the tune and apparently is singing in the original ad. I did not know Gordon Jump was in the shteze, and I definitely did not know. that the ad is as old as our esteemed baby co-host Tara and only ran until nineteen seventy six because in the eighties we sang this shit daily. We believed the promotion that granted a free Big Mac to a patron who could sing the jingle in four seconds or under was still active. And back then, as kids, we didn't understand the fundamentally mercenary nature of catchy jingles. We didn't know about food deserts. We didn't actually care whether the special sauce was just Thousand Island dressing Sidebar, it isn't. There's no tomato product in it, apparently.
Dave
43:21
Oh
Sarah
43:22
Second sidebar, please don't let me forget that we have to reclose the Extra Extra Hot Great food portal after this. Thanks. Bye All we knew was the jingle. Everyone knows this jingle. So do Sesame Seed Buntsy a favor and put this one on the menu in the Extra Extra Hot Great tiny commercial jingle cannon.
Dave
43:44
Alright, thank you Sarah. And yes, sense memory unlocked right away. Not that I forgot this jingle existed, but I forgot the exact sort of feel of it in the moment, you know, that sort of old scratchiness and a little more country than I remember, but I'm sure there were uh multiple versions.
Sarah
43:59
Yeah, same
Dave
44:02
From a marketing perspective, two great things that this commercial does as shareholders in the process. Number one is they manage to repeat the theme seven times during the commercials, so you got four more than you're supposed to. Say it three times. People will start remembering it and they just go on and on. And then the last quarter of it with the kid who can't quite make it happen.
Tara
44:24
Is that
Dave
44:25
So every child, every precocious child with an earshot of the TV will then demonstrate to you how they can do it right. Mom, mom, look at me. I know the capitalist slogan So I think not only is it a very memorable commercial that speaks to childhood nostalgia, it's also pretty insidious in a like marketing way.
Tara
44:48
Mm-hmm. The proof of how part of my DNA this jingle is, is that when
Dave
44:55
Wait, literally your DNA is probably ten percent McDonald's by now.
Tara
44:59
It is, but can I say I've never had a Big Mac and I never will because I don't like lettuce on a sandwich, as you know.
Dave
45:04
Two too much bread.
Tara
45:06
The the way you can tell how I know this Jingle on a like completely unconscious level is that when the guy is narrating it at the beginning, this haircut, he inverts cheese and
Sarah
45:19
He reverses.
Tara
45:21
He reverses cheese and lettuce and I'm like, what the Fuck? Like this is like that moment in lanterns where they prove the guy's an alien.
Sarah
45:24
Yeah
Dave
45:28
Did you just say wrapped up like a douche in the night
Tara
45:31
Yes. I I've never seen this commercial before. I mean I've heard the jingle obviously a million times, but I and and I had never seen the old box, seeing it unfold like that instead of the clamshell.
Sarah
45:41
Oh my God.
Tara
45:42
It was like, what an artifact.
Dave
45:42
Oh
Sarah
45:43
Yeah.
Dave
45:44
You know what I miss from those days, and I wish that they would bring back maybe yo my marketing days are long behind me.
Sarah
45:44
Mm-hmm
Dave
45:50
I used to be in this world. But honestly, do you remember when the Simpsons movie did the quickie marts?
Tara
45:54
Yes.
Dave
45:55
Like they turn 7 Eleven's signage into Quickie Mart.
Tara
45:57
Yes
Dave
45:58
They should take a few McDonald's here and there and 1970s retroise them so they have those Brown and yellow menus and all that kind of stuff again.
Tara
46:04
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
46:05
mm
Dave
46:05
the Brown uniforms of the polyester, please don't let that flame anywhere near me. Uniforms.
Tara
46:11
Yep.
Dave
46:11
Uh I'd go just for the Hell of it.
Tara
46:13
Yeah.
Dave
46:14
Yep.
Tara
46:14
I enjoyed the stressed out child as well.
Dave
46:17
Yeah.
Tara
46:18
That was amusing to me.
Dave
46:18
Oh God, so much is writing on this.
Sarah
46:21
I know. Give me a scotch.
Dave
46:24
Hobbit is closed to you
Tara
46:27
Of all of the things that McDonald's has contributed to culture, and you know, don't get me started, because I do go there at least, I'm gonna say, once every two weeks, if not more.
Dave
46:39
Hmm.
Tara
46:39
Uh yeah, this is undeniable to me.
Dave
46:42
Alright, very good. Let's put this to the official vote. I'm gonna say yes. Tara, what about you?
Tara
46:47
Yes, of course
Dave
46:48
Alright, so Big Mac Jingle from McDonald's in 1974. You are hereby inducted into the Extra Hot Great tiny commercial jingle cannon.
Clip
46:59
Americans love a winner
Sarah
47:01
Oh gotta close the food portal.
Clip
47:01
Yup And we'll not tolerate a loser. Nope
Dave
47:06
Yes. No, not yet All right, let's let's continue the mystery, the food portal, as we talk about not quite winners and losers of the week.
Sarah
47:12
Okay.
Dave
47:19
I will go first by not quite winner, is 30 Rock Jokes in 2026. Here is a line that we recently discovered from Variety. The agent who told Alison Janney that due to her height she can only play aliens lesbians. Great.
Sarah
47:36
And lesbian aliens
Dave
47:39
Loser Demon Hunters, both kinds, as Christian metal band Demon Hunter claims that confused fans of K-pop demon hunters were buying tickets to their metal band shows, which is kind of funny to me. I just want to read this excerpt from the story because it made me laugh in context Formed in 2000, Demon Hunter has released 13 albums to date, featuring songs such as My Throat is an Open Grave, Dead Flowers, and Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck.
Tara
48:06
Yeah.
Dave
48:10
Popular songs from K-Pot Demon Hunters include Golden, Takedown, and Soda Pop. Fantastic. I hope Demon Hunter gets all the money that is coming to them for that, which is probably zero dollars. Sure.
Sarah
48:25
My not quite winners are two directors who turned down Harry Potter offers Ali Pankyu of Black Mirror publicly announced on her Insta that she turned down an offer to direct on the Harry Potter series and urged artists to quote say no to funding transphobia. And director Kate Heron of Loki commented that they asked her twice and she'd explained why her answer would never change from a no. Maybe you need to have some of your um fellow artists tattoo that information on their faces 'cause
Dave
48:57
Yeah. Have they announced directors at all?
Tara
48:59
Not yet, that I know of, not that I've seen.
Dave
49:00
Yeah.
Sarah
49:01
And the directors better hope they don't because boo.
Tara
49:05
Yeah, I mean again insert James A.
Sarah
49:06
Um
Tara
49:08
Castor Rant where it's like, I just want to get away with it. Like I'm sure they all do, directors as well as stars.
Sarah
49:14
Yeah, and there's literally a thousand people associated with this fucking goofy project now, so I guess they probably will. Not quite loser is Doctor Who, as uh past series writer Mark Gaddis says that he believes the show's return, quote, quietly won't happen. I guess that they're just gonna like wait for people to forget about the franchise.
Dave
49:39
Yeah, put a question Mark at the end of that.
Sarah
49:40
Like good luck.
Dave
49:41
For real. Can I just say while we're on the Doctor Who subject that
Sarah
49:44
Good luck.
Dave
49:47
Our number one Doctor Who fan listener, Dr. Calhoun, finally listened to Doctor How Many quiz from last week, and he was appalled.
Tara
49:53
Mm-hmm, ajá
Sarah
49:53
Mm-hmm.
Dave
49:54
So good job, everybody. Add our knowledge, lack thereof.
Sarah
49:58
Oh yeah, well
Tara
49:59
I don't know why he was surprised if he was.
Dave
50:01
I don't think he was. He was just appalled.
Tara
50:03
Well.
Dave
50:03
Yeah. I think he knew what was coming at him.
Tara
50:06
Uh-huh.
Sarah
50:07
Oh, speaking of appalling, I purchased Tara's uh winnings today, and uh I think she will be appalled by then.
Dave
50:14
Great. All right, Tara, not quite winner.
Tara
50:16
My not quite winner is Riley. Keough headlighting a new casino drama that's in the works at HBO. I love this idea. This is a very fruitful place setting for storytelling.
Sarah
50:28
Mm-hmm.
Tara
50:28
I think that'll be really interesting to watch no matter what they do with it.
Dave
50:33
I want them to in each episode have just a blinking you miss it reference to other shows in Las Vegas like CSI, Vegas, or movies like Casino or whatever.
Tara
50:40
Mm-hmm, yes, mm hmm
Dave
50:43
Get that yes-no sign from Casino in the background.
Sarah
50:45
Viva Laughlin?
Tara
50:45
Yes.
Dave
50:46
Yep, here we go.
Sarah
50:46
Who doesn't want a reference to that?
Tara
50:46
Yes. I'll also just tell our listeners who haven't done so yet, and even if they had, watch Heart 8. Speaking of uh excellent art set in a casino, it is on MGM+ L O L.
Dave
50:59
With a library cop, right?
Tara
51:01
Yes, yes, Philip Baker Hall.
Dave
51:02
Thank you.
Tara
51:03
May he rest, we miss him.
Dave
51:03
Mm-hmm. Yep.
Tara
51:04
And um it is also on Philo
Dave
51:07
That's not real.
Tara
51:08
It's re it's real.
Dave
51:09
Oh, as in Farnsworth?
Tara
51:10
It's the I think that's what it's named for.
Dave
51:12
Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
Tara
51:13
I guess it's Philo, yes.
Dave
51:14
Yeah.
Tara
51:14
Good point. Um that is a free that's I think it's
Sarah
51:16
Marvel
Dave
51:17
It could be the pastry. Do you think Philo ever enjoyed Philo?
Tara
51:21
Probably.
Dave
51:21
Yeah, good for him.
Tara
51:23
My not quite loser of the week.
Sarah
51:25
Oh my God.
Dave
51:25
It's really got off the rails.
Tara
51:27
Okay. It's Cindy Crawford, and here's why. Her daughter, Kaya Gerber, she's been on the Shards Press Tour, as one does, and part of that was going on a podcast junk it and one of the things that she one of the stories she told was that when she went on to the set of American horror story Her mother, Crawford, made Gerber carry holy water onto the set because Crawford was worried that Gerber would get possessed. Which she previously had been as a child. And I her listening to the clip, the hosts are like, wait, were you just like a a really unruly child? She's like, no, I was just, you know, demon possessed, you know And how did they exercise you with a didgeridoo, she said. And I don't know if that was just improv because one of the hosts that she was talking to in the moment was Australian.
Dave
52:19
Yeah.
Tara
52:20
But yes, this is a story she told. Is it real? Who knows? The more that I heard of it, the more I thought, like, okay, Kaya Gerber is just having fun on the Shards Press tour because earlier in it
Sarah
52:28
I yeah.
Tara
52:30
She uh told in someone else a story that she writes erotic fanfiction online under a pseudonym So I I just think she's, you know, Robert Pattinsoning it up, like just m telling shit and seeing how far it can go.
Dave
52:42
Yeah,
Sarah
52:43
All right, bless.
Tara
52:45
And if so, good for her. I'm glad she's Making her own fun. It certainly makes her seem more interesting than anything she's doing in the shards where she is.
Dave
52:53
And way to drag your mother into it.
Tara
52:53
Not great. And way to drag your mother into it.
Sarah
52:57
Maybe they had a side bet though. Maybe Sidney Crawford's like, yeah, you could throw me under the bus for this. This must be so boring.
Tara
53:02
Sure, yes, yeah.
Sarah
53:03
Tell him this
Dave
53:05
All right guys. Well speaking about getting possessed and then uh making up stories about your performance about getting possessed, do you know what that's terrible? Hey guys thinking about dumping on your mom. Do you know what time it is?
Tara
53:21
It's non regulation game time
Sarah
53:22
Jesus
Dave
53:23
Yes, also is extra credit. Let's not forget that.
Tara
53:26
No, let's not.
Dave
53:38
I just want to say before Tara starts, we will have extra credits again. I know there's been a lot of game chunks recently, but David T. Cole is having a bad week, so we had to do a light load. But thank you, Tara, and we'll get back to it.
Tara
53:50
Mm-hmm. Today's non-regulation game time is called Making TV Dinners, because yes, you really can't Still close the portal. Sorry, I forgot earlier. And related to our lead topic, this is a game about TV stars who have written cookbooks. So since cookbooks tend to have very generic titles, you're almost certainly not going to get any of these off those, but we will start there. If you somehow guess the author from the title alone, you will get five points. If not, I will describe an imaginary situation that they or their best known character might be cooking for, then it's worth three points.
Sarah
54:18
Oh
Tara
54:27
If you still don't know, I'll tell you the title of the show they're best known for, then it's worth one. I'm blanking out the parts of book titles that are potentially part of a clue. No equalizer challenge zones or steel meals. The winner gets a gift inspired by or related to one of their correct answers. Can you both please keep scores so that you can concur with one another?
Sarah
54:47
Yes.
Tara
54:48
Are you ready to play Making TV Dinners?
Dave
54:51
I know I am
Tara
54:52
Alright, let's throw it to PICCI to see who's going first.
Sarah
54:53
Yes
Clip
54:57
We will start with David.
Tara
54:59
Okay, David. Your cookbook title is Does This Taste Funny?
Dave
55:08
Cookbook from a TV actor. Does this taste funny? I'm gonna say that is the cookbook of
Dave
55:19
Rob
Tara
55:22
That is not correct. This author is traveling for Better Noah District and needs to butter up a formidable opponent with some butter cookies.
Dave
55:35
Oh, uh, this is Stephen Colbert
Tara
55:38
This is Stephen Colbert for three points. He co-wrote this book with his wife, Evelyn McGee Colbert.
Dave
55:44
And candles
Tara
55:46
Yes, Sarah, your cookbook title is Food, Health, and Happiness: 115 On-Point Recipes for Great Meals and a Better Life.
Sarah
55:48

Sarah
56:00
On point. Ah, Michelle Visage
Tara
56:06
Gail's coming over so they can discuss a few of their favorite things over dinner.
Sarah
56:14
Oh, uh Oprah Winfrey.
Tara
56:15
Oprah Winfey is correct for three points. Dave, blanks
Dave
56:19
Mm-hmm.
Tara
56:21
Big Bad Book of Barbecue, Colonel 100 Easy Recipes for Backyard Barbecue and Grilling.
Dave
56:28
Can I just ask a question and apologies if you have already gone over it? Does this exclude like cooking personalities?
Tara
56:36
Yes.
Dave
56:36
Okay. So like no guide for Aries or whatever.
Tara
56:39
No, there's no celebrity chefs.
Dave
56:41
Yeah, okay. Can I have that again, please?
Sarah
56:43
Yeah.
Tara
56:43
Of course, blank's Big Bad Book of Barbecue Colon, 100 Easy Recipes for Backyard Barbecue and Grilling.
Dave
56:50
I'm gonna go with, and I hope this is his name, Cole Hauser.
Tara
56:55
At someone's name, but not the author of this book.
Sarah
56:56
Someone's name
Tara
56:58
This author just bought a new party tent. So his cookout is happening no matter what the weather is like, and any neighbors who aren't invited will have to gawk through the window.
Dave
57:10
Huh. He just bought a new party tent, so his cookout is happening no matter what the weather is like, and any neighbors who aren't invited will have to gawk through the window. Boy, those seem like really pointed clues.
Tara
57:24
They're even capitalized.
Dave
57:26
Yeah, yeah.
Sarah
57:26
Mm-hmm.
Dave
57:27
I don't know.
Dave
57:28
Jon Hamm?
Tara
57:30
This person is from The Today Show
Dave
57:32
Oh. Um, is this Al Roker?
Tara
57:35
This is Al Roker for one point.
Sarah
57:38
Uh Roker.
Tara
57:39
Sarah D. Bunting.

My blank cookbook, Memories and Blank Food from my Blank to Yours.
Sarah
57:49
Teresa Judice
Tara
57:51
Great guess, she was in the draft for this, but spoiler, she is not in the game. This author's character is celebrating a farmhouse Thanksgiving with at least a half pint of gravy.
Sarah
58:06
Melissa Gilbert
Tara
58:08
It's Melissa Gilbert for three points. David T. Cole. This cookbook is simply titled, I love you.
Dave
58:18
This is Kristen Bell
Tara
58:24
That is a good guess. She would do that shit. This author's character is throwing a party for her 1000th ocean rescue, and she plans to decorate with lots of bouncy balloons.
Sarah
58:27
Yeah
Dave
58:37
Oh boy. Is this Pamela Anderson?

Okay.
Tara
58:42
Sarah, your next cookbook title is Extra Lean Colon, the fat-burning plan that changes the way you eat for life.
Sarah
58:52
It's in really poor taste to say Jared Leto, but he does lean grit.
Tara
58:58
He does lean great.
Sarah
58:59
He does lean great. It's not him. It's extra lean. I don't even oh my god. Fucking, what is that guy's name?
Dave
59:06
Cole Hauser.
Sarah
59:07
Polly from Jersey Shore. I don't know.
Tara
59:11
This author's character wants to welcome his girlfriend, or mama, as he calls her, back from caffeine pill rehab, so no Brown sodas, please.
Sarah
59:22
M is this Mark Paul Gosselar?
Tara
59:26
Your next clue is save by the bell, so you're on the right track.
Sarah
59:30
Okay, well, I hope it's Mario Lopez
Tara
59:33
It is Mario Lopez. Good for one point. Back to Dave.
Dave
59:36

Dave
59:40

Tara
59:42
Possibly Clido.
Dave
59:45
Isn't that like a web like old video hosting service or something?
Tara
59:51
No, no.
Dave
59:52
Um let's see. This feels real B-list. Let's go with Kathy Griffith. Or Griffin, whatever her name is. All right.
Tara
01:00:00
Griffin. This author's character is marking the anniversary of the wedding she ran out on, and don't worry, she's putting her famous hair in a ponytail during prep.
Dave
01:00:11
Uh Jennifer Andiston?
Tara
01:00:14
It's Jennifer Aniston for three points. Not B list.
Sarah
01:00:17
Nice
Tara
01:00:18
Clydo is apparently her dog's name. This is a cookbook for kids
Dave
01:00:21
Oh. I think I think it'll be like Clipio or something like that, maybe.
Tara
01:00:25
Oh, maybe.
Dave
01:00:26
Yeah.
Tara
01:00:26
Next question is for Sarah, and then we'll do a score break. I forgot to say there are 12 questions. Sarah, your title is In the Kitchen with Blank: a collection of blank family favorites.
Dave
01:00:38
Don't you worry about blank. Let me worry about blank.
Tara
01:00:40
Be weary of that blank.

Cole has ten, and Sarah D. Bunting also has ten
Tara
01:01:19
Oh my god! Well you each have two questions left, so let's get into it. Oh Dave, do you concur?
Dave
01:01:25
I concur.
Tara
01:01:26
Great.
Sarah
01:01:26
David T. Cole concurs.
Tara
01:01:28
Nice. Dave, your next cookbook title is Don't Fill Up on the Antipasto Blank's Father-Son Cookbook
Dave
01:01:38
Hmm. Is this Rob Lowe?
Tara
01:01:42
No, but that's a good guess.
Sarah
01:01:42
Sorry to bad guess.
Tara
01:01:43
This Italian-American author's character wanted to celebrate his employer's latest promotion, or maybe she wanted to.
Tara
01:01:50
It's hard to know which of them is Actually in charge
Dave
01:01:55
Hmm. Uh yeah, who uh Fuck what's his name?
Dave
01:02:03
I almost said Tony Danza, but that's not my answer.
Dave
01:02:07
The care the person I'm thinking of is the following from Happy Days.
Dave
01:02:12
They weren't all happy days. Scott Bayo. Fuck.
Tara
01:02:19
The show you wanted to aim for is Who's the Boss?
Dave
01:02:23
Well then why does it say actually in charge?
Sarah
01:02:24
Oh,
Dave
01:02:26
That's a shitty clue.
Tara
01:02:27
Actually in charge, who's the boss?
Dave
01:02:29
Hmm. Charles and church.
Tara
01:02:31
Well, if it was Charles in charge, I would have said who's the boss so that you wouldn't get it. I didn't want to repeat it.
Dave
01:02:36
All right. All right.
Tara
01:02:38
It's the same way I didn't say keeping track in Sarah's Kris Jenner.
Dave
01:02:39
Excuse me, I'm just going to fill out the forums for a uh official objection.
Tara
01:02:45
All right. Anyway, what's your answer, Dave?
Dave
01:02:49
Tony Danza.
Tara
01:02:49
Tony dance is good for one point.
Dave
01:02:51
I swear to God.
Tara
01:02:53
Sarah Blank's kitchen colon cooking with love for family and friends
Sarah
01:02:54

Dave
01:03:47
What was the first part stirring?
Tara
01:03:49
Stirring up fun with food
Dave
01:03:50
Stirring a fun with food. I'm gonna go with What's her name? Tiffany Ambertheson
Tara
01:03:58
That is not correct.
Sarah
01:03:59
Nice pull, though
Tara
01:04:00
Your clue is for high school graduation, these stakes, this author's characters grilling, definitely are not rare.
Dave
01:04:10
Uh can't get a spelling on stakes.
Tara
01:04:13
Well, that's the question, isn't it?
Dave
01:04:14
Hmm, is this God, why can't I remember anybody's name? Sarah Michelle Geller?
Tara
01:04:20
It is Sarah Michelle Geller for three points.
Sarah
01:04:22
Wow, nice pull.
Dave
01:04:24
I was about to do Ghost Whisperer. I was like, oh, it's not her.
Tara
01:04:27
Yep. She I I mean I didn't find that she wrote a cookbook, but she does seem like the type Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Dave
01:04:34
Just before we get to our last question, Sarah is currently one point behind.
Sarah
01:04:35
Mm-hmm.
Tara
01:04:37
Yes. Oh boy, here we go. Sarah, your cookbook title is Pull Up a Chair, Colonel Recipes from My Family to Yours. So this is someone who has chairs and a family.
Dave
01:04:48
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:04:50
Mm-hmm.
Tara
01:04:51
Or at least one chair.
Sarah
01:04:52
And possibly pull-ups, I don't judge. Could I hear the subtitle again?
Tara
01:04:58
Of course, recipes from my family to yours.
Sarah
01:04:59
Sorry.
Dave
01:05:03
Oh, it's Olivia Garden.
Sarah
01:05:05
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Uh Robert Guillaume.
Tara
01:05:08
It is not Robert Guillaume.
Sarah
01:05:10
Had to get him in somewhere.
Tara
01:05:11
Sure, your clue is: this author's character isn't just warming a house, she's blazing it, and avocado heads are definitely on the menu.
Dave
01:05:11
Sure.
Sarah
01:05:21
Oh, here's Tiffany Thesson
Tara
01:05:23
Here's Tiffani Thiessen for three points. What are the final scores?
Sarah
01:05:29
Well, it went back and forth a little bit, but uh I have David Ty Cole not tied with 14, and I have sixteen points.
Tara
01:05:39
Sarah, you win
Dave
01:05:41
Wait, didn't ask me if I concur.
Sarah
01:05:42
Oh, yeah.
Tara
01:05:42
Oh, do you concur?
Dave
01:05:43
Yeah, I guess.
Tara
01:05:46
Do you guys want to play the tiebreaker for fun?
Dave
01:05:48
Sure
Tara
01:05:49
Your title is In the Kitchen with Miss Piggy. What the Fuck? I forgot to blank that one.
Dave
01:05:55
Good job, good job.
Clip
01:06:00
Sarah! Sarah!
Tara
01:06:01
Surprise! The answer is actually Kermit. No, it's not. I'm so sorry.
Dave
01:06:05
I can't believe the person that just did that also came up with the who's the boss clue Well guys, that is it for another episode of Extra Extra Hot Great. I just want to point out when we first started this, we promised a looser show than the main show on Wednesdays, and here we are.
Tara
01:06:21
Yeah
Sarah
01:06:21
Yeah, this is loose, alright.
Dave
01:06:23
We discovered the most potent ingredient in the test kitchen was RAGE!before answering your burning Ask EHG questions like who's voicing Reacher's Kitten and which lantern should pop up next? Sarah bumped up local McDonald's Big Mac sales by zero point zero one percent with her tiny commercial jingle can in order. We celebrated those weren't quite the best and worst of the week, and wrapped it all up with Taras TV Dinner Game Time. Stay tuned after this for the Promise Muppet Star Trek bit. We moved here from our discussion of the premiere back
Tara
01:06:55
Yes
Dave
01:06:58
In the olden days. Next up, Death. It comes from Sweden. Remember.

01:07:06
We're listening.
Dave
01:07:09
I am David T. Cole saying And on behalf of Tara Ariano
Clip
01:07:12
Enough! I'm so sick and tired of hearing you people talk about food, food, food!
Sarah
01:07:14
Thank God.
Tara
01:07:18
You thought so? Is it the thing you have to eat before the good part of the meal?
Dave
01:07:21
And serial D. Bunting.
Sarah
01:07:23
Lettuce cheese, lettuce cheese
Dave
01:07:26
Thanks for listening. We'll see you next time right here on Extra Extra Hot Great.
Clip
01:07:34
That is cheese cheese shuttleberries, let us uh cheese shigles oh what am I saying?
Dave
01:07:44
Alright, so episode five is called Level Five Transporter Accident or something like that.
Tara
01:07:48
Yes, it is
Sarah
01:07:49
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:07:50
This is the Muppet episode that you saw in the trailer.
Tara
01:07:53
Well, puppets. I don't think they're of official Muppets, are they?
Dave
01:07:55
Oh they're Jim Henson.
Tara
01:07:57
Oh they are?
Dave
01:07:57
Oh yeah, okay. Yeah, it said Jim Henson's workshop in the credits.
Tara
01:07:58
Oh okay. Well then I take it back
Dave
01:08:00
Yep.
Sarah
01:08:01
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:08:02
There's a transporter accident involving Scotty's childhood doll friend.
Tara
01:08:06
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:08:07
By the end of the episode, I'm not quite sure if it happened or not, but doesn't really matter. Fox out in the shuttle doing some shit. The puppet gets crossed with the transporter beam and everybody on ship turns into a Muppet. Sure, fine.
Tara
01:08:20
Yeah, except Spark
Dave
01:08:21
Except Spock, yeah, he's on the shuttle.
Tara
01:08:24
Which is very funny. And it also acknowledges like the sort of memey like recast of production where everyone is a Muppet except for one character. Like that is the one character you would want to not be puppetized.
Sarah
01:08:36
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:08:36
Right. And then for the rest of the episode, because there's this what I really like enjoyed about this episode is they just didn't turn everybody into a muppet. It was how practically do muppets do things in the Star Trek universe when they are Muppets And these are the kind of like Star Wars versus Star Trek, who would win in a space battle, sort of minutiae arguments that I enjoy seeing once in a while in shows like this.
Sarah
01:08:52
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:09:03
So it's much like wearing normal gloves in the winter for humans. They have trouble using touchscreens.
Sarah
01:09:09
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:09:10
They can't really feel things the same way. Some of them you know, lose arms and get cut in half and they could just be stitched together. They have no blood or viscera to contend with.
Sarah
01:09:17
Mm-hmm.
Tara
01:09:18
I love that.
Dave
01:09:19
They can be ejected into space and they just have a really great time because they don't need to breathe because they have no lungs. Just
Sarah
01:09:25
Yeah. But before they figure that out, there's that moment recalling Pike and Spock sort of touching each other like hands against the window and then he gets airlocked and then he's like, oh wait. Don't have to breathe. And then they hang a light on the fact that they're all floating in space talking to each other.
Dave
01:09:43
Yeah. Yeah, the the hand moment was uh also a uh Wrath of Khan little flashback there.
Sarah
01:09:48
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:09:49
And then because everybody except Spock is a Muppet, now Spock has to be the entire ship's gopher for the episode because Pike's got a new chair with his iPhone screen and he needs Spock to actually touch it to turn on the lights or whatever. He's gotta go to engineering and plug in a warp core. He's gotta go to emergency bay and physically stitch somebody up after they lose an arm in a transporter accident. A lot of nice little things like that where they're like how Actually would a Muppet exist in the structure universe on a starship with high technology? And I thought that was really great. And then the other great thing about the episode overall is something that Tara mentioned about the voice acting, and I thought that was a really great note.
Tara
01:10:32
Oh yeah, that that um you can tell they're doing puppet voice acting.
Dave
01:10:36
Yep.
Tara
01:10:36
Like their their performances are themselves but also heightened in a very cartoony way that I've it was pleasing to me.
Dave
01:10:40
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean usually I guess when you do animation you do the voice first and then you animate to the voice, but I imagine here they did the voices after the production was shot. I mean I'm sure they were on stage till they read it.
Tara
01:10:54
Oh. No, I don't I think they probably did the voices first.
Dave
01:10:57
You think?
Tara
01:10:58
Yes.
Dave
01:10:58
Oh I th it was so well mashed up. Alright, alright. Well either way, the results were great.
Tara
01:11:02
I think that's just because the yeah, the puppeteers are very good.
Dave
01:11:05
In the episode, that happens, a transporter accident, and then the conflict after that is Orion Space Pirates find the Enterprise somebody because they're a Muppet hits the wrong thing on their console and then the Orions can see on the bridge that everybody's a Muppet, so they're gonna come to steal all your stuff. And there's a moment where Pike is on the captain's chair and he's trying to put shields up and he's just flailing as a puppet. Ah! Shields, shields, computer spox, shields Spock, spox, computer and just the way he is doing that voice line was just perfect.
Tara
01:11:36
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:11:37
And you can tell how Anson Mountain is heightening it like 30% because now he is a Muppet and he's got the Kermit energy about the whole thing.
Tara
01:11:41
Yep. Yes. Yeah
Dave
01:11:47
that I just really enjoyed. And I know this is a cheap gimmick episode, but it really worked.
Tara
01:11:51
Yeah.
Sarah
01:11:51
mhm
Tara
01:11:53
Yes.
Dave
01:11:53
Like this is the one where it hit on all cylinders, I thought
Tara
01:11:55
Yeah, I also like to see them walking like Muppets where they're sort of bouncing and, you know, moving their heads more
Dave
01:12:01
When the Orions first attack and there's, you know, that typical camera Dutch angle shift and you know they have little scenes of here and there in the hallways as sparks and explosions from the side of the hull happen. That was tailor made for Muppets. It is so much better.
Tara
01:12:17
A hundred percent.
Dave
01:12:17
Those scenes are better when there's Muppets flailing around with their mouths open. Ah than it was with real people.
Tara
01:12:24
Yeah.
Dave
01:12:24
I I really enjoyed that.
Tara
01:12:25
So s
Dave
01:12:26
And they milked it because they knew after they shot the first one that well we have to put three or four more of these in there because this is really funny.
Tara
01:12:31
This is gold.
Dave
01:12:32
And it was.
Tara
01:12:32
Yeah, Sarah, you you mentioned the design of Pelia with her her uh her hair looking like um curly straw
Sarah
01:12:39
Yeah.
Tara
01:12:40
What else str struck you about the puppet episode?
Sarah
01:12:40
Oh my gosh. Well, first of all, two of the pirates are played by Rachel Harris and Joe Latrullio, who are
Tara
01:12:48
Yes.
Sarah
01:12:49
sort of muppity in presentation like Letrulio Boyle from B99
Tara
01:12:52
Yeah
Sarah
01:12:57
just has this like sort of bug-eyed aspect to him. And then it took me ages to place Rachel Harris, but she does have that like distinctive high voice. that she's playing this like forbidding pirate and like the I mean that the Muppets all have to or the puppets all have to like stack themselves up. in literally an overcoat uh to get anything done. The when they're trying to fight the pirates when they first arrive on the Enterprise, and uh it's like Brrrrr Like, are you even feeling this? And uh Rebecca Robain did a really wonderful job given that she's usually probably the tallest person on the set at any given time.
Tara
01:13:38
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:13:40
that she has her little teeny mupp at arms and is uh running them like a motor. But um I've I did feel like the choice to make it sort of make the subtext text in dialogue, like this allows us to do things that don't make sense. And also that w the minute to praying is like Fine, I will come and help you, but you must promise me no hijinks of any kind.
Tara
01:14:04
Yeah.
Dave
01:14:04
Yeah.
Sarah
01:14:05
And it's like, I'm just happy that that actor is back.
Dave
01:14:08
Yeah.
Sarah
01:14:08
I loved her to pring.
Tara
01:14:09
I agree
Sarah
01:14:10
Then naturally she is immediately subjected to the highest jink. There is, and even she is like, the actor must have been so happy to just like really get to let it rip because the whole premise is like, if we're all puppets, then just like enjoy all the potential of that instead of the limitations. But oh my god. The and there was also kind of a um vision quest moment. Vision quest? No. Galaxy quest. That moment where they're like they're talking to each other and the the screen is still on and the aliens in that one are like, you know that's still on, right? We can hear you.
Tara
01:14:50
Yeah,
Sarah
01:14:51
Yeah, so I always enjoy a nod.
Dave
01:14:53
Speaking about the view screen, if I had one note for this episode I thought could improve it, there is a scene early on just after they are turned to puppets and Pike is reporting to his admiral back on Starfleet Command. It would have been so much better if during that whole conversation the admiral was trying to stifle a laugh.
Tara
01:15:11
Yes, yes.
Sarah
01:15:11
Yes, I had the same note.
Dave
01:15:13
Yeah, but that would have been really great.
Sarah
01:15:14
Same note.
Dave
01:15:15
I'm really surprised they didn't do that because that was a pretty obvious moment.
Tara
01:15:19
Yep
Dave
01:15:19
For me. Did anybody notice in the conclusion of the Orion battle on the bridge at the end of the episode that the doctor is just repeatedly hammering one of the Orion's balls?
Tara
01:15:31
I know.
Dave
01:15:32
Yeah. Just like three of them tackling the brute Orion in the background. He's just like wham, wham, wham, wham, just going nuts on his sack.
Tara
01:15:42
Well, this is why you get a TV show. So you can do something absolutely idiotic like this and God bless everyone who decided they should bring it to us because it was a delight.
Dave
01:15:46
Yep. Yep.
Sarah
01:15:51
Mm-hmm. Yep, agree.
Clip
01:15:59
This is Extra Hot Great Minis. Today's topic is Weird Questions Lightning Round. Alright, this is an extra credit from about seven people. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding from uh EHG Assist on Twitter. I just asked, uh give me some really weird questions. So without further ado, our first question from Ian, and we'll go to Tara first. The TV Hunger Games starts soon. What character would you field? Saul Goodman. Uh-huh. I'm gonna go with Jack Bristow. Bristow? Um, I didn't understand the question, so I said homeland's Brody kids. Sure. Mark? I said Ilana from Broad City because she would win. Yeah, I like that one. Alright, Peter asks, which TV character has the sexiest elbows? Tara. Uh Paul Spectre of the Fall, sorry. Clem from Buffy. Sarah. Michael Vaughn. Yeah. Uh Donna Meagle and Tom Haviford because they jeweled them. In the future. Alright, Will asks, which TV character would you like most to see eat fresh dog poop off the sidewalk a la divine in pink flamingos? Tara. Bevers from Broad City. Dragon Lady from Game of Thrones Nate Fisher Jr. six feet under. Eddie the dog. Oh. I'm asking, what's the one number that feels the wronggiest as a channel? Thirteen. Three. Twenty-four. Forty-two, actually. Hmm. Andy asks, which TV character would benefit most from only being able to say, I'd like to go to the county fair Uh Fitz from Scandal. Yeah. I'm gonna say Presto from the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon of the early 80s. Oh yes. Rust and Cole. Uh-huh. And Bert Cooper from Mad Men. Alright. Rounding us off here in the lightning round Weird Questions. Uh Sean asks, which TV character would you want Hannibal to cook and serve you and what's the recipe called? Uh Michonne from The Walking Dead, and I would call it beef in quotation marks, Borg Michon. Ooh. Yep. Dave. Uh then after that, um he's going to serve the conjoined twin from America uh American Horror Story. And it's a roasted affair called Second Helpings. Thought you would have gone with double happiness. Good. Sarah. Um, mine is fruit de Meredith Gray with a poured wine with us. Mark, take us home. And mine is bagels and sherlocks. Nice. Yep. That was so stupid. That was so stupid. That was fun.
