The real Bret Easton Ellis went to high school in Los Angeles in the early 1980s and wrote Less Than Zero at an unusually young age. Were he and his friends also menaced by multiple ritualistic murderers, like the somewhat fictionalized Bret Easton Ellis of The Shards? We don’t know, but we watched the show based on it and are here to share our thoughts. Ask EHG finds us contemplating whether the Emmys have a more credible track record than the Oscars, our favorite Beastie Boys songs, and more. Sarah pitches “You gotta cry and cut” from Project Runway for the Tiny Catchphrase Canon. Then, after naming the week’s Not Quite Winners And Losers, we wrap up with an Extra Credit Game Time that’s both lost AND found in translation. Pour yourself a nice cab and join us!

God, I hate coming here every week and just to watch her ride this dumb horse. Why do we do this to ourselves? Because we are nice People.
Dave
00:15
This is the Extra Extra Hot Great Podcast, episode 423 for the August 8th, 2026 weekend. I am Weirdly Empowered Student Body President David T. Cole, and I'm here with Two-Door Tank, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:35
Four miles a gal in Leipzigin.
Dave
00:37
And new kid who's up to something, Tara Ariano.
Tara
00:40
I've never even seen the shining Welcome to Extra Extra Hot Great for another weekend. Thank you so much for your support. We're so happy that you're here. To listen to us talk about the shards, the show that is destined to be called The Shards In nineteen eighty-one, Los Angeles, a lightly fictionalized Bret Easton Ellis played by Get This Igby Rigney
Dave
01:14
Chicken Caesar.
Tara
01:16
Is a high school senior with a girlfriend named Debbie, Hayes Warner, a couple of quasi-boyfriends, and a partially completed manuscript of a novel that will become less than zero. He's also got a nagging feeling that the recent spate of ritualistic murders aren't going down the way the LAPD has been sharing with the press. Is it one guy nicknamed The Trawler? Or is it possibly a bunch of people in a cult run by a disgraced English teacher named Bruce? Or Is it the creepy new kid, Robert Mallory, Homer Gear, and yes, he is Richard's son, who refuses to admit that Brett spotted him a year earlier at a Westwood showing of The Shining, even though Robert says He just moved to town. The show is adapted from Brett East and Ellis' novel of the same name by Ellis and Ryan Murphy. The first Two episodes premiered on FX and Hulu on August 5th. We got access to the whole season, but we will be careful about spoilers in future episodes. Let's do the Chen check-in. Sarah, should our listeners watch the shard?
Sarah
02:25
No thanks.
Tara
02:28
Dave
Dave
02:28
I didn't know what this was. Absolutely 100% blind going in. It was like three minutes in. I was like, oh, this is another Ryan Murphy show. That's exactly like all the other Ryan Murphy shows, is it not? Yes, it is. So with that knowledge, I think you could probably answer for yourself whether you should watch this or not.
Tara
02:45
Yeah, look, I'm gonna say you sh you shouldn't watch this show. It's not good. And yet at the end of the second episode, I turned to Dave and was like Unfortunately, I was interested in this kind of trashiness.
Clip
02:59
Yum, yum, yum, feed me that garbage. Yum yum yum yum yum
Tara
03:01
That's that's it Let's get into it. Brety Snails wrote the novel this is based on. He wrote a version of himself into it who also narrates, but it's It's not really him, but the character is also a rich LA kid who's writing less than zero and is trying to get it optioned as a movie before it's even finished. The layers put me in mind of this moment from Frisky Dingo clip, please.
Clip
03:24
As we rise up as one man and destroy my brother Xander Kru! Thanks, Ken! Ronnie! What? What what is wrong with you? Hey, what? I do your- That's why we can't have nice things. Hey, come on. Thank you, Ronnie. It's complicated enough without all this evil. twin bullshit having. You know what? That is. . actually that's a pretty good point
Tara
03:51
Is this show too complicated enough without all this evil twin having bullshit, Sarah?
Sarah
03:57
Here's the thing, I have a higher tolerance for Ryan Murphy than some critics, I would say.
Tara
04:05
Clearly not me, go on.
Sarah
04:07
And look, he knows to put a shit ton of vintage Benzes in at the top lately just to get Buntsy on his side, and I considered letting it work But it's not so much the like complications of the evil twin bullshit. It's like what side of the line you fall on, or the debate, I guess, Bret Easton Ellis wise, that it's like this listing of brand names and sort of commerce replacing emotion. Like, do you think that that's deep and profound and makes a comment on turn of the millennium society and adolescence? Or do you just think it's lazy and smug? I think it's lazy and smug. I think it's been vastly overpraised and as pretty as this was to look at. I don't care I don't care about any of these people. They all seem exhausting. I could not figure out what the who the lead i is that Igby Rig bottomless bread bowl of Igby Rigney.
Tara
05:12
Yes.
Sarah
05:14
Finally I realize that he looks like this really uncanny hybrid between Andrew McCarthy, who was in Less Than Zero, the movie.
Tara
05:23
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
05:23
And Taron Egerton, who has been at a bunch of period pieces and probably would be better in this.
Dave
05:29
I was also getting Anakin Skywalker vibes from him.
Tara
05:29
Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah
05:34
Mm-hmm.
Dave
05:34
Like pouty Anakin Skywalker vibes.
Tara
05:36
Mm hmm.
Dave
05:36
Like I hate saying Anakin Skywalker vibes.
Sarah
05:39
Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's not that it's complicated, it's that it wants us to think that it's complicated and it's actually just
Dave
05:45
Yeah
Sarah
05:47
a lot of surface and there's nothing wrong with that or a contemplation of surface. This is, like I said, beautifully shot, everyone's pretty Looking at the feathered hair. I don't know. It brings you back to a time, but I don't have eight hours to spend on that and won't.
Dave
06:04
It's not complicated.
Tara
06:06
Hmm.
Dave
06:07
Like there's just too much going on and there's too much Yeah, that's what I mean.
Tara
06:09
Yeah, needlessly. Like you could you could call this guy Chet and say he's writing a book called Negative One.
Dave
06:11
It's
Tara
06:16
You know? Like One of the very first things we hear Brett narrate is about his father's hand-me-down Mercedes convertible, which isn't as cool as he would want as a teenager driver. I wrote in my notes, Sarah is disgusted.
Sarah
06:30
Yeah.
Tara
06:30
Is is that where they lost you?
Sarah
06:33
No, because then later he's parking it next to other models that I did learn to drive on. I also thought they weren't cool. Back then, I was wrong about a lot of things at that age. What car would he have wanted instead? Is my question.
Tara
06:49
Well, Robert's Porsche probably
Dave
06:51
I think there's so much emphasis on the cars because they didn't do anything else to make it look like the eighties.
Tara
06:57
Mm-hmm.
Dave
06:57
outside in exterior shots beyond just using a very shallow depth of field so you couldn't see anything that was going on on Wheelshire Drive or whatever they were driving through. Like the only one I remember is when at the start of it they show like uh I don't know it was like Melrose or something where there's a Mexican restaurant across the street and they couldn't even get their font game right. They had Gotham, which is like an Ots font. Like Obama era font there, so like come on guys
Sarah
07:23
Just borrow the B roll from spelling TV.
Tara
07:27
Yeah.
Dave
07:27
Like album covers are doing a lot of heavy lifting for this is the 80s.
Sarah
07:31
Yeah.
Dave
07:31
Look at me. I got my new Elvis Costello album. Here it is.
Tara
07:35
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:35
Final. A lot of that. I kind of wish they could have spent more money on actually making it look like a period piece instead of just lens flaring themselves away.
Sarah
07:37
Mm-hmm.
Tara
07:45
No, it's it's true, but I feel sort of the same way about this as I did about Love Story, which I think was better overall, which is Ryan Murphy and I have the same yearning for the very specific earlier age in culture. And yes, I know Connor Hines was the credited creator on Love Story, but he was born in 1988. He doesn't know what it was like to go to a record store in a mall.
Dave
08:06
Yeah.
Sarah
08:07
Mm-hmm.
Tara
08:07
Or fantasize about models in GQ magazine.
Dave
08:10
I always have more trouble hooking into a show when it's exclusively about rich people.
Tara
08:16
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:16
Okay, like I understand this is just what America loves to watch American dream aspirational stuff to become rich and famous through methods.
Tara
08:26
Yeah.
Dave
08:26
But when they're all like that, it's just I realize we're not necessarily supposed to root for one of them in the writing of these sometimes, but it's also hard just to enjoy on a certain level for me because I'm just like Are we done with rich people yet? Can we agree that rich people have generally been not a great cultural force for us?
Tara
08:47
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:47
So I kind of wish they had another half of this. I just kind of wish there was like a normal click in the school or something to play off against. I realize it's a private school and there probably isn't.
Tara
08:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
08:59
But that always bothers me in these productions.
Tara
09:02
Yeah, that's a good note.
Sarah
09:03
If you're gonna talk about sort of the inch-deep carelessness and alienation of the rich, ask yourself, self Can I do this better than F. Scott Fitzgerald? The answer is no, especially if you're Bret Easton Ellis.
Tara
09:18
mm
Sarah
09:18
Like, and you went to Bennington, like you have no idea that there even is another half. Like you think the have nots are people who went to Wesleyan? I kind of envy people who can plug into his whole thing and say that American Psycho is a devastating comment on whatever.
Tara
09:28
Yeah,
Dave
09:36
Genesis Duke album.
Sarah
09:37
But yeah, Dave has a point. Like, yeah, rich people, n no funciona.
Tara
09:43
Yeah.
Sarah
09:44
What else?
Dave
09:44
So Tara, what is it about this that you're hooking your meaty hands into?
Tara
09:49
I mean it's the nostalgia for sure.
Dave
09:51
Hmm.
Tara
09:51
That's part of it. Seeing all the markers and and the when he's like We used to go to the mall, there were so many record stores. There used to be four huge bookstores we could walk to and I'm like crying, like, yes, it's true.
Sarah
10:02
I know.
Tara
10:04
That is what I miss.
Sarah
10:04
I know.
Tara
10:05
You know, it's also the sort of like this is obviously the little archie version in many ways, but it sort of reminded me a little bit too of um American Gigolo in terms of brands in place of
Sarah
10:05
Yeah.
Tara
10:17
character. That's the good version. This is the stupid version. But it's also funny that given that connection that I I felt that y one of the stars the student who's up to no good Robert is uh played by Homer Gear and uh about as good as Kaia Gerber, Cindy Crawford's daughter, his dad's ex-wife's daughter, but you know, she at least I think has found an acting lane where being like blank and affected in this particular way is like what she's supposed to do, like plausibly seems like a choice as opposed to just a lack of range, I guess.
Dave
10:53
Because I'm just used to seeing Cindy Crawford all the time, she just looked like a half-baked Cindy Crawford in all her scenes. Like, what's wrong with Cindy Crawford's CG de-aging process?
Sarah
10:59
Yeah.
Dave
11:02
It's a little off.
Sarah
11:02
And she sounds just like her too.
Dave
11:04
Yeah.
Tara
11:05
She does.
Sarah
11:05
It's I mean it's like weird.
Dave
11:07
Yeah and her drinking peps Dia Pepsi at that halfway cafe was a real stretch for the show.
Tara
11:07
Yeah
Sarah
11:07
I don't know. Yeah.
Dave
11:13
Actually I wouldn't put it past the show to do something like that.
Tara
11:14
No, I wouldn't. All of this seems very
Sarah
11:16
And then she shaved K.D. Lang's dog.
Dave
11:19
Actually, when is that ad? Is that 80s or it's nineties, eh?
Tara
11:21
It's ninety one or two, it's the early nineties.
Dave
11:23
Oh, okay. So we couldn't have her actually driving past the shooting of that commercial out in Santa Clarita.
Tara
11:29
No
Sarah
11:30
No
Dave
11:30
Yeah.
Tara
11:31
No, no, unless they do a wet hot American Summer flash forward to when they meet ten years later to the day.
Dave
11:35
Sure. Right.
Tara
11:39
They do also sh I think deliberately shoot her from below to accentuate like how long her legs are, because it's crazy how long her legs are. Also, Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood are now old enough to play the gross embarrassing parents, so that was that was rough.
Sarah
11:54
Oh my God, yeah.
Dave
11:56
There is nothing more disgusting in this month in television than Wes Bentley's hair.
Tara
12:02
Yeah, the w that m perm wig is horrifying.
Sarah
12:03
Oh
Dave
12:04
Because the first time we see him, he's in a hot tub and his hair is wet, and you just don't get a sense of what's going on.
Tara
12:10
Mm-hmm.
Dave
12:10
But then later he's taking Brett out for lunch.
Tara
12:13
At Ludome.
Dave
12:15
And you see it in all its boy, I don't know.
Sarah
12:19
Brilloid glory
Dave
12:20
It was like the uh the coming to America hair ad but on a white dude.
Tara
12:21
Yeah Yes it is. Yeah, it is it is Jerry Curl esque
Dave
12:30
Jerry Carl, thank you.
Tara
12:31
This is also cruel to Evan Rachel Wood, who was like the young girl robot in Westworld less than ten years ago, and now she's come around to horrible, embarrassing, substance using mom ruining the party.
Sarah
12:39
Mm-hmm.
Dave
12:44
Linear time comes for us all.
Tara
12:46
I guess I guess. I'll also say, if this show's two creators were not themselves gay, I think we would for sure be talking about the homophobic portrayals of both Terry, the West Bentley character, and his c Extremely menacing gay assistant Steven. Oh my god.
Dave
13:04
Yeah, what was that?
Sarah
13:05
Yeah
Tara
13:06
I don't know
Dave
13:06
He looked like somebody you know that show, um, it's uh Demons in Hell. Oh, what the Fuck is it called? Has been Hotel?
Tara
13:14
Oh, he does he does
Dave
13:14
He looks like a has been hotel character if if it was you if it was human.
Sarah
13:20
Yeah, I was just humming Warhol's Drag Race.
Tara
13:24
Yeah.
Sarah
13:24
Start your engines
Tara
13:25
He he's made up like um Robert What's his face in uh
Sarah
13:29
Oh yeah, rubber blake and yep.
Tara
13:30
Yeah. Robert Blake, thank you, in that David Lynch movie. Yeesh. The Shards started out as a serialized audio book that Brenny Snells released through his Patreon, which made me think, should I do that with bad teen novel?
Dave
13:46
Yeah, that'll make a great series, Tar.
Sarah
13:46
Yes.
Tara
13:48
Thank you.
Sarah
13:49
Yeah, just add a couple chapters about going to the mall and going to record stores and bookstores.
Tara
13:54
I think there are some actually.
Sarah
13:56
I I think there are. Not as good as the shirt content, but
Dave
14:10
Alright everybody, it's time for everybody's ask and answer segment. It is Ask E-H-G.
Clip
14:27
Definitely
Dave
14:29
Alright, let's get into judgment for last week's Ask Ass EHG. I am gonna spin the wheel of judgment. Tara.
Tara
14:42
Yes, I am judging the answers to a question Pitched by David T. Cole, which is pitch everyone on a TV show based on a brand name food product. Unsurprisingly, Dave has an answer for this. What is it, Dave?
Dave
14:57
It's just my elevator pitch, which is a show called Lunchables Court, which is just like the People's Court, but for schoolyard disputes.
Tara
15:04
I love that. That's great.
Dave
15:07
And the damages are in Lunchables.
Tara
15:09
Yeah, of course. Mm-hmm. But in full trays or in specific high value Lunchable components?
Dave
15:15
Well, it depends on the judgment. So like the judgment could be two crackers and two pieces of salami and one cheese.
Tara
15:17
Mm. Yeah.
Dave
15:21
It could be like three packages of unopened Lunchables. It really depends on how strong your case is.
Tara
15:26
Mm, interesting. Interesting. I think you got something there.
Dave
15:29
Thank you.
Tara
15:30
Some runners up, Cekent wrote, two monogram loving pieces of candy-coated chocolate. Wendy and Wilma move to Australia and open a store in MMs.see what he did there, cause down under Drydendon, who I think changed their um intercapping on their display name so that we would stop calling them Drydendon, wrote, Jake
Dave
15:52
Oh by the way, I refuse.
Tara
15:55
I know.
Dave
15:56
Okay.
Sarah
15:56
Yeah.
Tara
15:56
Jake Nineball Samuelson is the talk of the billiards world running through his competitors like nobody's business. But sling and stick only pays so much, so on his nights off the felt he is a high stakes cat burglar, robbing from London's elite, pursued by Scotland Yard's most decorated officer, Sergeant Corinne McCain Jake's smash and grab operation is on the cusp of being snookered. Coming this fall to BBC 4. Hot pocket! Thank you, good one. But our winner is Seth. No pitch required. Simply tell Paramount Plus that there's an eighteen eighty three spin-off and a green light is guaranteed. Sam Elliott and his fellow Duttons fight to maintain their hold on Yellowstone Ranch now under three. threat from the rival McCool family, emboldened and avaricious after striking the fabled Montana motherload and looking to expand their holdings. Dust-ups are guaranteed and things are gonna get spicy next summer on Taylor Sheridan's Cool Ranch Doritos and Seth adds. Doritos comes from the Spanish word doradito, meaning little pieces of gold. Very clever. Seth, well-earned sticker, DM Dave.
Dave
17:06
Wow.
Sarah
17:06
Wow gorgeous.
Dave
17:08
Alright. I think Seth is like 'cause I haven't done them in a little while, I think he's got three or something.
Tara
17:11
Mm-hmm.
Dave
17:13
So if you want a shirt instead, just let me know.
Tara
17:13
Yeah.
Dave
17:15
You've won so much lately.
Tara
17:16
Seth is rich, rich in stickers.
Dave
17:18
Yeah. Alright, let's get to your questions for us. Laugher, L A F R. And you're watching of TV shows from the nineteen seventies. Have you watched any mod? They say it has a real designing women's issue rant vibe. Tara, Maud, yes, no?
Tara
17:34
I have not. I may have possibly never seen an episode of Mod, actually. I don't think it was ever in syndication when I was watching those shows in the eighties.
Dave
17:43
Is that a lot of people?
Tara
17:43
I went to see where it is and other than buying it, it's only on Tubi and I'm not gonna be adding a show in this category that's Only on an ad-supported platform. Sorry if it comes to something I have a ad-free subscription for.
Dave
17:56
Speaking about rich people.
Tara
17:57
Well, sorry, Sarah
Sarah
18:00
I've really only ever seen the most famous one. I had to teach it in that class. Back in the day, I think it might be more up Tara's Alley if it does come to streaming service, but I haven't seen fit to add it to the Capital L list. No. Dave?
Dave
18:17
Yeah, I don't know anything about it except Bea Arthur's in it and they had an abortion episode. That's the exact extent of my
Sarah
18:21
That's what everyone knows, so good job.
Tara
18:22
That's the one.
Dave
18:23
Knowledge.
Tara
18:24
Yep
Dave
18:24
Yeah. W. Lamb, do you remember the first time you came across a multiverse or mirror universe episode of a show? They cite Super Friends as the first one they remember seeing one in. They had quite a few. Sarah.
Sarah
18:36
I mean, I don't think various Knight Rider episodes featuring Garth or Carr count, so it's Probably original series Star Trek Mirror Mirror, but it's not like I necessarily would have clocked that at the time if I ran across it in a rerun, because I would have been little.
Dave
18:50
Yeah.
Sarah
18:54
So yeah, no, I guess I don't remember is the answer, Dave.
Dave
18:57
Mm-hmm. Yeah, same kind of answer. I've I think the first one I was probably exposed to is Star Trek, you know, the ones I remember, they're not exactly multiverse or mirror universes or the this planet is one thing that sort of is a conceptual mirror parallel universe like the Nazi planet or the mob planet, those ones.
Tara
19:16
Right. Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:18
And sort of the same with Thundarr the Barbarian, which is like it's Earth and it's all different, but it's actually still in the same timeline A lot of those examples. And also probably Super Friends. They have some genuine like here is Earth 2 type of stuff, but I don't remember those.
Tara
19:34
Mm-hmm. I mean, similarly, I guess that's like you could make a case that that's what Fantasy Island is doing, you know, sort of.
Dave
19:40
Okay, kinda, yeah.
Tara
19:43
But otherwise, you
Dave
19:44
Well there's like pocket universe stuff that we're talking about, right?
Tara
19:47
Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I I've possibly was walking through a room at some point that was airing a sliders episode, but yeah, I guess my answer is also no.
Dave
19:57
Mm-hmm Yeah, because there's also the ones that are like you go back in time to fix things like Quantum Leap and um uh Voyagers? Is that the one from the 80s?
Tara
20:08
Maybe. Yeah, that sounds right.
Dave
20:10
Yeah, again, it's not quite a parallel universe as time travel, but they have the same a lot of the same plot devices. Yeah. All right, flame splash. Peacemakers, plural, maybe resting in peace, but it showed us the fun of taking a modern like CSI and placing it in a historical context of the Wild West. Take another very modern show conceit and time travel it to the past. So Peacemakers was, was it Tom Berenger, right?
Sarah
20:39
Oh, was that?
Dave
20:40
Yeah, Tom I think it's Tom Berenger and he plays like a martially sciencey guy or he has a martial partner or the sciencey guy is his partner. But basically it was solving crimes and they were sort of like inventing forensics as they went along. I think it was the gist of the show
Tara
20:56
Yeah, you're right, Tom Berenger.
Dave
20:57
Yeah. Yeah. Alright, so my idea is Old West meets X-Files, literal ghost towns, faith healers that are also vampires, mining camp meter strike that makes miners eat gold.
Tara
21:01
Uh-huh.
Dave
21:11
Skinwalkers.
Tara
21:13
Yeah.
Dave
21:13
And a snake oil salesman who tonic turns people into snakes.
Tara
21:17
Hmm.
Dave
21:18
Oh, and Billy the Kid's actually a kid.
Tara
21:20
No.
Dave
21:20
Tonight.
Tara
21:21
Take royal pains even further back in time than the Nick and show us concierge doctoring in the English countryside in like Jane Ausna times. Sarah.
Sarah
21:32
Put fringe or the X-Files in colonial North America, Sleepy Hollow, sort of. did this, but I would like to expand the concept to trying to figure out slash explain the non-existence of the Jersey Devil et al. Like, oh that's not a werewolf, that's just a wolf.
Dave
21:47
Uh here's another one I just thought of. Take the general idea of the thick of it and stick it inside of Death by Lightning where it's
Tara
21:53
Mm-hmm. Oh, that's good.
Dave
21:58
It's a lot more of the behind-the-scenes political stuff, but it's also very crass like Chester Arthur 24-7.
Tara
22:01
Yeah, yeah. That's good.
Dave
22:06
Jovial Gent has one just for Sarah. What is a sporting event you wish you could have experienced as it happened?
Sarah
22:14
I have a lot of memories of experiencing home runs either, you know, live at a ballpark, like the one that turned me into a baseball fan. Thank you, Dwight Gooden. Or like in the car on the highway, and you could tell other people were also listening to the same game because everyone else started like honking their horns on the turnpike. I don't know, like I guess one of the legendary nineteen eighties NBA finals performances like Lakers Celtics that I didn't care about basketball then, so I wouldn't really have been paying attention, but I feel like I have been able to experience great sporting moments that I wasn't alive for thanks to the internet. It would have been pretty amazing to experience the nineteen sixty nine Mets postseason, though. That was something else.
Tara
23:02
Nice.
Sarah
23:03
Quite a time.
Tara
23:03
Oh.
Dave
23:06
Kara has our next question. Victoria, British Columbia is hosting a Red Bulls log driver competition. What other events should be part of the new season of Wipe Oot from Canada? Tar.
Tara
23:18
Well, first of all, Carrie, you are Canadian. You should know it would be more like white boat, not white boot. But that said, human curling, a person is flooding across ice in place of a rock. Dave.
Dave
23:30
I've got three skating past a pastel of Bonhomme from the Rideau Canal.
Tara
23:35
Sure.
Dave
23:36
Having a conversation with Tom Green and making out with same-sex hockey players.
Tara
23:42
Huh
Dave
23:43
Sarah.
Sarah
23:44
Poutine eating pros versus Joes setup
Tara
23:48
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
23:48
That pits contestants against Joey Chestnut or the Canadian equivalent, so Gordy Chatania. I don't know. Thank you, Tara. Phew! It worked.
Dave
23:59
Dan Cassino, the Oscars have a long history of best pitcher winders that look real bad in hindsight. Are the Emmys any better or is my memory just more selective? Sarah, what do you think about this?
Sarah
24:10
It's not exactly apples and oranges, but it's sort of apples and oranges because like the Emmys tend to or used to get stuck in ruts with like, you know, best Like best drama, best dramatic lead, like the same people winning over and over again, because the shows are the same pretty much every year or like over a period of years, so you have like eras in the Emmys that you don't exactly have in the Oscars.
Dave
24:38
Yeah, I mean the thing about TV is that just generally speaking it doesn't like push the envelope as much as movies do. Like the advent of the, I guess the equivalent of an R-rated TV show is a relatively new thing. Movies just have more opportunities to be bad.
Tara
24:56
Yeah.
Dave
24:56
In a way that is remarkable.
Tara
24:58
It's true, but I I will also say, like, some Emmy wins are a real croc of shit. Like, for example, everyone The Bear has received in the comedy category.
Sarah
25:04
Mm-hmm
Tara
25:08
This is an ongoing I mean, I guess it's almost over.
Sarah
25:09
Yeah. Yeah, category shopping is a thing that you don't necessarily see except in like supporting versus best regular, but sorry.
Tara
25:12
Will be over it. Yes. Yeah.
Dave
25:21
I thought the question was more like the Oscars have blind side. What did T what does T V have in the same sort of thing?
Tara
25:27
Yeah, I mean I I agree with Sarah. It's uh it's eras because shows have years and years and y potentially years and years and years to keep winning.
Dave
25:35
Yeah,
Tara
25:37
It makes the good picks seem stronger, like as a an aggregate, I guess, until you drill down, like for example Succession in its final season winning drama series over season one of Andor, you know, like are those are both good shows, but
Dave
25:50
Yeah.
Tara
25:51
Was that the right call? Probably not. And then when you look at how many awards Andor did not get nominated for in its second season, like it looks even worse.
Dave
26:00
Yeah, I guess, but I I mean I guess I just thought the question was
Tara
26:00
So
Dave
26:04
The Oscars have problematic winners. What are the problematic winners of anything on Emmys? And I went through the list. I mean, I just started out in the seventies for best drama and best comedy.
Tara
26:11
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
26:12
And there's not a lot. There's not one that's like, ugh.
Tara
26:15
Right, right, right.
Dave
26:15
I mean, there's ones that have creators that have since been, ugh, like the Bill Cosby show, Louie, that kind of stuff.
Tara
26:19
Sure.
Sarah
26:21
Uh-huh.
Tara
26:21
Yeah
Dave
26:22
But that's not the show's problem as a piece of creative art.
Tara
26:25
Right, mm hmm.
Dave
26:28
I mean the worst I came up with under drama was like 24, just because it has problematic politics. And then maybe on the comedy side, I would put like the worst is Will and Grace. I know that's my opinion and not a popular one, but I think that's kind of a problematic portrayal.
Tara
26:40
Mm-hmm.
Dave
26:44
And that's the worst of it.
Tara
26:46
Yeah
Dave
26:46
So I don't think the Emmys have any competition when it comes to us.
Sarah
26:50
Well, but sometimes it's like, you know, these winners are just not really good.
Dave
26:55
No, yeah, there's lots of that.
Sarah
26:55
Like I mean, crash, but then the the analog I would say is like late later seasons of West Wing just like getting rubber stamped for acting stuff.
Dave
27:04
Yeah. Coasting. Yeah.
Tara
27:06
Yeah
Sarah
27:07
Like, come on.
Dave
27:09
We Tara need to put I know we had it on our list and we forgot, but Lou Grant won twice in a row, 79 and 80 for drama. We really gotta watch Lou Grant sometime.
Tara
27:17
Yeah, we should
Dave
27:17
I'm really
Sarah
27:18
For drama? Wow, okay
Dave
27:20
Yeah, it is a drama. It's a newsroom drama. Yeah.
Sarah
27:23
Huh, great grant.
Dave
27:23
It's it I I I get the sense that it's born from the same tone and energy as all the president's men, but you know, serialized.
Tara
27:24
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
27:30
Oh wow, cool.
Tara
27:31
Well it has like uh yeah it has Livia Soprano as basically its Catherine Graham analog
Dave
27:31
Yeah.
Sarah
27:32
All right
Dave
27:34
Yeah. Yeah. Like he moves to LA and he becomes the editor of a newspaper or something like that.
Tara
27:41
Mm-hmm.
Dave
27:42
Yeah. Alright, Millsnack, what is your favorite Beastie Boy song? Eggman. I like the song about people egging cars and stuff. Your face, the joke.
Tara
27:51
Mm-hmm.
Dave
27:52
Sarah.
Sarah
27:53
Shake your rump. I'm a basic, Dara.
Tara
27:56
Sabotage, I'm basic as well.
Dave
27:57
All right, great. Jovial gents back. If you're on a sitcom and just came back from grocery shopping, what things are sticking out of the one paper bag you're carrying to signal this?
Tara
28:09
It's Dr. Pepper Cherry Zero Sugar, the thing I buy every time I go grocery shopping for Mr. David T. Cole.
Dave
28:17
Okay, so you're saying that's the sitcom? That
Tara
28:20
Yeah.
Dave
28:20
Like if you're in a sitcom, it's Dr. Pepper.
Tara
28:22
Uh-huh.
Dave
28:22
And then you drop it and it explodes and then the whole back room is covered in Dr. Pepper.
Tara
28:26
Yes
Dave
28:27
That's the sitcom bit.
Tara
28:28
Yes.
Dave
28:30
Slash pr dramatic Yeah, dramatic event for Tara
Tara
28:32
Based on true events. Oh my god. That video is it'll haunt me. Anyway, Sarah.
Sarah
28:40
Paper towels because Dan and I keep cross buying them and now we could open a store.
Dave
28:44
Yeah.
Sarah
28:45
Dave.
Dave
28:45
I guess I didn't answer this personally enough because my answer was celery or a baguette or I guess for Tara a family-sized cereal box.
Tara
28:53
Mm-hmm.
Dave
28:54
Sticking out. But what I don't like is when they cheat it with a milk carton. It's like there's no way a milk carton would be sticking out of the top of a bag.
Tara
29:02
Right
Dave
29:02
'Cause it's just not that tall. That always bothers me when it seems to be magically floating near the top of the bag.
Tara
29:08
Well yeah, and you wouldn't put it on top of other stuff in the bag that you would like you're not gonna put it on top of bread or whatever.
Dave
29:11
No, crush it. Exactly.
Tara
29:15
Anyway.
Dave
29:15
There is an order to these things, and the prop people should know.
Tara
29:17
There is
Clip
29:19
Enough! I'm so sick and tired of hearing you people talk about food, food, food.
Dave
29:24
Next question comes from Drydendon. What TV show would benefit from a pop-up video fact system? Sarah, good question.
Sarah
29:32
Any season of Ryan Murphy's feud? Dave
Dave
29:36
Oh, okay. The Devil's Plan for English viewers. It's better now than it was in the previous sort of iterations of this concept. Like they used to destroy you in the deep end with the Korean graphics and they would just never explain what was going on. You're like, Alright, I hope I can just get it from context. Sometimes you could, sometimes you couldn't, because some of the games are very steeped in Korean traditions and and idioms. I would enjoy not only pop-up facts to, you know, add to what they are explaining in real time. I wouldn't mind if it they could also pause the show and then re-explain it in even simpler terms
Tara
30:14
Yeah.
Dave
30:14
Or just go more into what the Fuck they're talking about when they're talking about the devil's plan equivalent of Squid Game, right? Where they're like, oh yeah, everybody plays Squid Game.
Tara
30:21
Right.
Dave
30:23
Remember Squid Game as a kid? I'm like, I don't Can you explain it a little further? And they'd like explain it for 10 seconds, and you're like, I still don't get it. Pause it for one minute, give me a better explanation, get back to the show.
Tara
30:35
Mm-hmm.
Dave
30:35
I'd be in for that too.
Tara
30:36
Yeah. I would love to watch I mean, I know why they don't obviously they never would because they want you to watch the whole season and spo not be spoiled for where things go, but married at first sight would benefit me if as an episode drops, they give you updates on where the couples are as of when the episodes are coming to the viewer because You know, you kind of sometimes want to see where a certain fight netted out.
Dave
31:02
Yeah.
Tara
31:03
So that would be mine
Dave
31:04
It's weird that that show hasn't I mean I guess they can't do it because of course they're manufacturing drama and compressing time and space.
Tara
31:10
Mm-hmm. Yeah
Dave
31:13
But the fact they don't have like a map with everybody's GPS signals going off where you can see how far away they are from each other, right?
Tara
31:19
Yeah.
Dave
31:20
I mean, that would make sense.
Tara
31:21
Mm-hmm.
Dave
31:21
I would like to see that information. Even if they like release it like later after the show or something like that, that's fine.
Tara
31:25
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dave
31:28
I mean, not whatever.
Tara
31:29
Yeah.
Dave
31:29
Don't watch it anymore, but that seems like a no-brainer to me.
Tara
31:32
Mm-hmm. Anymore. That makes it seem like you ever watched it.
Dave
31:36
Sorry, what show did you say?
Tara
31:38
Married at first sight.
Dave
31:38
Oh I thought you said amazing race. My answer probably seemed really confusing when I just said it.
Tara
31:46
No, I mean I s uh it sort of supports mine. If you're like you want to see how far apart they are, like yeah you do.
Dave
31:52
I guess.
Tara
31:52
That's what I'm talking about. Anyway.
Dave
31:56
That's funny. All right, that's it for us. Here comes your question to answer, dear listeners. It comes from Bzor Laura, who asks. Who is your favorite TV chaos agent? And what is your favorite example of the chaos they set in motion? Have an idea for that? We have a channel just for you. It is called Ask Ask EHG on our Discord. Or you can answer on the webpage for this episode right on our site, extrahotgreat.com. It is time for the Extra Hot Great Tiny Cannon presenting. Today it's Sarah.
Sarah
32:28
Hi, Project Runway season twenty-two is currently limping along over on Hulu. Apparently, I quit on the show in favor of reading the recaps at Reality Blurred, and I thank my esteemed colleague Andy Dennard for his yeoman service, but A far better use of my own Project Runway time has been to return to the glory days of Project Runway in the past, specifically season two, episode six. window shopping for the tiny catchphrase canon. Season two is very possibly Peak Project Runway. The only episode in the Grown Ups table canon is from the second season, and that season was full of catchphrases from Where's Andre to the lighten up it's just fashion song to It's a Motherfuckin' Walk Off. But I went with one just as dear to my heart, Zalima Griffin ordering Kara Janks to Cry and Cut. The context here because it's been 20 years, is that the designers have been tasked with creating a day-to-night look for Banana Republic. It's a pairs challenge, and designers were allowed to pair on their own. But Zulima and Kara sort of backed into their partnership and their divergent design styles led to a quote first draft that got a revolted I just don't see it from Tim Gunn during his walkthrough. And so it was that with less than an hour of workroom time left that day and the knowledge that the losing team's designers would both get the off Sulima took over a shot collar, picked a new fabric, and started issuing marching orders to a weeping Kara, clip one.
Clip
34:09
All you need to do is lay it down, cut it, do the same pattern. I'm just really trying to keep calm because it's just not coming together. I know that I know the doom and I just don't think it's the right time. I don't care if you cry and cut, but you gotta cry and cut. You gotta cut at that rate. Do whatever you need to do, but you need to do. You need to work. And don't stop and cry.
Sarah
34:36
Shortly after this, Daniel Vasevich comes over to give Kara a comforting hug and kiss, and I think the perception at the time was that Zulema was being mean. But I've been the Kara in these situations, and I've been the Zulema, as I think is true for many of us, which in my opinion is part of what makes the moment enduring. A big part of it is also the alliterative phrasing, of course, but we've all been overwhelmed by the seeming hopelessness of an impending deadline. We've all been frustrated by having to do therapy about that deadline with a working partner instead of you know, working. And I'd argue that the fact that Kara does cry and cut, that they do pull together a look and hang in through the curveball window display part of the challenge and come out safe at judging, adds to the moment's tiny canonical argument. Because ain't that just life? You don't get to stop and cry, you do have to cry and cut Is it just another even blunter way of saying make it work? Maybe, but that got in, so I hope you led Zulima's iconic You Gotta Cry and Cut Motherfucking Walk into the EEHG Tiny Canon.
Tara
35:49
Thank you, Sarah. Dave, why don't you go first as the person with less context going in?
Dave
35:54
Sure, I didn't realize this was from the same season as at some motherfucking walk-off, but that's a guy quoting Zoolander?
Tara
36:01
Yes
Dave
36:02
Yeah, okay. When I hear things like this, filing it away and like how can it's like a word-a-day calendar. How can I use this in my life?
Tara
36:10
Mm-hmm.
Dave
36:10
You know, like and you're waiting for the moment where you can pull it out. This scratches that itch, which is I like it, I want to use it, I don't want to adopt it, and I want it in my lexicon, which I think is a success for it Not a big Project Runway fan, but I like this.
Tara
36:27
I forgot how fucking annoying Kerason was. She's even fucking crying in her talking head in the uh the cut of Yes.
Sarah
36:34
Cara Janks, you mean? Carason.
Tara
36:36
Oh yeah, Carouson with someone else.
Sarah
36:37
Ver very different vibe.
Tara
36:38
I'll take that again.
Dave
36:39
Karasan is where the uh stronghold of the Imperial forces in Star Wars are located on the city planet of Kara-San.
Tara
36:44
Right.
Sarah
36:46
Mm-hmm.
Tara
36:48
Yes, sorry Yeah, she's even crying in her talking head, the supercut that you found on YouTube, and like then when she thinks it's going wrong and they are miraculously saved at judging to Fuck up another day, I guess She and Zulema go behind the screen when they're safe and she like stunts and does a little dance. Like other people are about to get eliminated. Like, I know you're happy, but That's rude. But yes, Azulima saying she doesn't care if Kara cries. That is clear. But she is right. And this is a good rule for most competition shows and life. Don't stop down to cry.
Dave
37:27
Yeah.
Tara
37:27
Fucking get on with it.
Sarah
37:29
Mm-hmm.
Dave
37:30
Go to therapy after you get eliminated.
Tara
37:32
Exactly.
Dave
37:32
Right? I mean w do you want to work through your emotional issues during the show when you're probably gonna get eliminated for it?
Tara
37:34
Yeah
Dave
37:39
Or do you just want to suck it up, try to win a hundred thousand dollars?
Tara
37:42
Yeah.
Dave
37:42
and then spend ten thousand dollars of that off for the next couple of years of therapy.
Tara
37:46
Right. And what happens is actually like they regroup They walk like a very competent dress. Like it's not thrilling, but it fits the model, right? All the finishes aren't Finished properly, but even Michael Kors is like, I think it looks good. And when we see Nina in episode two on the judging panels like Oh, she looks like she's wearing the dress that they showed.
Sarah
38:09
Mm-hmm.
Tara
38:09
Like it's so similar. Which is funny. So, you know, they were on to something. And uh you gotta cry and cut. Turned out to be good advice because it it worked.
Dave
38:18
All right.
Sarah
38:19
Yeah
Dave
38:19
Tara, let's make this official. What say you for this for the tiny catchphrase canon?
Tara
38:25
Yay
Dave
38:26
Me too. So You gotta cry and cut from Project Runway. You are hereby inducted into the Extra Hot Great tiny catchphrase cannon!
Clip
38:37
Americans love a winner. Yeah. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
38:43
It is time to discover who are our not quite winners and not quite losers of the week. I will go first. My not quite winner is last one laughing. A very successful But w here's the history of it. I'm a little confused.
Tara
38:56
Mm-hmm.
Dave
38:56
But wasn't there a last one laughing like fifteen years ago on American TV?wasn't there a show that was like that? Wasn't it called Last One Laughing?
Sarah
39:06
Last comic standing, is that what you're thinking of?
Dave
39:07
Yes! Last comic standing
Tara
39:08
Haha, very different.
Sarah
39:09
And it's not like that at all, because no one laughed on that shit, because not funny.
Tara
39:11
No, no, no.
Dave
39:13
Okay, but here's my problem. I re okay, yes, now it's all coming back to me and they are different shows, different conceits. Last one, Laughing UK, is a whole bunch of comedians stuck in a room. You make them laugh, they're eliminated. Simple concept. They are bringing it to America, and I'm just gonna say it. Americans have poor panel show culture and it shows when they try to do one of these.
Tara
39:32
Yes.
Dave
39:33
Would I lie to you, America? Serviceable, instantly forgettable, one-tenth as good as the British version, and all of them. Taskmasters, same thing when they tried that here.
Tara
39:45
Yeah.
Sarah
39:45
They should bring back the mid-century ones, like what's my line?
Dave
39:48
Yeah.
Sarah
39:49
Well, it's not like we didn't invent this. It was just a different vibe.
Dave
39:52
Yep
Sarah
39:53
Anyway, sorry to interrupt.
Dave
39:54
G no, good for the franchise, and I understand you know this isn't the first and I think it would play well in Australia and New Zealand and lots of European countries. Apparently the Canadian one's terrible, which tracks, because
Tara
40:06
mhm, ajá mm
Dave
40:09
Canadian comedy is more like American comedy. So good for it, but I just don't see it working here.
Tara
40:15
Yeah.
Dave
40:15
But prove me wrong. Not quite loser of the week is Doctor Who, as former showrunner Chris Chibnall says the CBC can't afford it. And my question is, how can they not afford it? It costs thirty dollars to make an episode of Doctor Who, and it's famously shitty looking
Sarah
40:34
Yeah
Tara
40:34
Yeah.
Dave
40:35
And they don't need to hire a brand name to play the doctor. They just get somebody.
Tara
40:38
No.
Dave
40:40
They don't need an A-lister to do it.
Tara
40:41
Well, the problem is that with the season ending cliffhanger
Dave
40:41
Like Yeah.
Tara
40:46
had them bringing back Billy Piper, who was Rose in the Christopher Eccleston years.
Dave
40:50
As the doctor?
Tara
40:52
That was the I believe that's the idea that she's gonna be next.
Dave
40:54
The intent? Okay.
Tara
40:56
So, you know, she costs. But yes, I I don't think that I don't know what they're what they're talking about, other than that the BBC is just generally under like extreme austerity measures at the moment, like firing tons of people, et cetera, et cetera.
Dave
41:09
Mm-hmm.
Tara
41:10
So, you know.
Dave
41:10
They should have registered nurse who. Save a little buddy. Alright, that's all I got. Sarah.
Sarah
41:18
Hi, um, my not quite winner is the Gilmore Girls. Uh they are getting a documentary at HBO Max. Historically, as regular listeners know, I have had less than zero.
Tara
41:30
Yeah.
Sarah
41:31
desire to interact with the actual show, any five minutes of which will give me hives, but I would totally watch a documentary about it, or hate watch, hats, hat watch. My not quite loser is the adopted kittens whose responsibility it was to help decompress Charlie Hunnam from the quote darkest realm of playing Ed Gein during his season of Monster. Uh I mean I read this whole interview because I was like, don't don't make companion animals do therapy for you. But he like was staying at the four seasons and hired a full-time cat sitter to hang out with them. Which is a job I would do. And hey, he's not Tory spellinging the felines, so okay, good good for him. Not great for the cats. I hope they have cool names
Dave
42:20
Who's a good kitty cat? You're a good kitty cat.
Tara
42:25
Puss, pus, pus, pus, pus
Dave
42:27
But who wants din tins? Taurus, your turn
Tara
42:33
Uh my not quite winner of the week is Marta Kaufman setting up an improvised sitcom prime video with June Diane Raphael and Paul Scheer starring. It is called dinks, but it's not the kind of dinks that are in pickleball, as you can see in the Apple TV movie The Dink. It is short for double income, no kids. I feel like they probably should change that. Unless they're trying to bri pull in the pickleball crowd who are just gonna get confused and hope that they stay.
Dave
43:03
And Riot, because there's no pickleball.
Tara
43:05
Yeah.
Dave
43:05
I was promised pickleball, and now you're all in trouble
Tara
43:08
Then again, maybe people with double income and no kids love pickleball. What do I know?
Dave
43:12
Boy, double income no kids is something I thought we left behind at least two decades ago, right up there with Yu Yuppie and whatnot.
Tara
43:16
I know. Right. Yeah, it's true. Uh not quite loser of the week It's Jon Bernthal, and it's not that I don't agree with the spirit of what he's saying, but you can't go on someone's podcast and say that prejudice against pit bulls is Dog racism? Buddy, consider what you're doing.
Dave
43:37
Dog racism.
Tara
43:39
I understand the mics come out and you just start talking, but
Dave
43:43
Sure
Tara
43:44
You know, maybe when you are driving home, pull over and then go text someone to say, Hey, can you cut that part where I said there's such a thing as dog racism?
Sarah
43:54
Yeah. No.
Dave
43:56
Wow.
Sarah
43:56
Bre bully breedist, I will grudgingly allow, if you know what you're talking about, which actors
Tara
44:01
Sure
Dave
44:03
Well, speaking about grudgingly allowing things, do you know what's happening to extra credit segment?
Tara

Tara
44:52
Okay.
Dave
44:52
I just you're gonna hear a Korean literal translation and say, well that sounds most like this show. You'll each lock in, you'll give me your show, I will judge which one I think gets closest to the Mark, and you will get a point For an additional two points, I have my own answer list. And if you match my answer, you will get two points. So a possible total of three points per question. Let's throw it to PICCI, this is just going to be for the reveal order.

We celebrated those who weren't quite the best and worst of the week and wrapped it all up with the surprise Korean TV game time. Next up it is Anna Pigeon!

I think we should stop this. Stop what This This is Extra Hot Great Minis. Today's topic is game changers. This topic comes to us from Kim Reed. It is an extra credit. And she asks, what's our favorite game changer episode of TV?her example, which thanks a lot, Kim, now none of us can take it, is The post-Super Bowl episode of Alias where they shut down SD6 and you were like, What is the show gonna be about now? That may have also been the one that introduced Evil Francie. I think that's right. Anyway, since I couldn't pick that, that would probably be my actual answer. I'll go first. Mine is one that actually just came up in Game Time, the episode of Friends where Chandler and Monica start their romantic relationship. Just because it it really did change the show, but it also was so unexpected. I no one saw it coming and it was really a fun thing to do on that show and that's my pick. Dave. While we're on the topic of game time, I found the question that uh I missed in last game time. So uh first person to well actually this is a thing. Closest answer gets 10 day points This is from round four, Important Milestones. And the question is, how in how many episodes into Beverly Hills 90210 did the senior class protest for Donna Martin to graduate? A hundred. Sarah. Uh 90. Mark. Abstain. Oh, 90 wins. It was 78. So hunting, you get 10 day points. All right, back to the topic at hand. Which is what? Oh yeah, game changers. I have a few. One that I didn't even see, but you could tell which was the end of season I'm gonna say three or maybe four of Dexter, where we find Rita in the tub. uh kind of changed the tone of that show very quickly. The season three finale of Star Trek Next Generation when Picard is assimilated into the Borg. Uh that really stepped that show up to a new level, became sort of his own show. But my one I wanna say in Tara, I mean I want to cover your ears, and it's uh Gus Spring's Death. on Breaking Bad, and that really marked the start, uh the beginning of the end for Walter White, because that was his last sort of foe before the Empire became the Walter White Empire. And uh really that character from that point on was successfully doomed. Yeah. Mark. Okay, I chose The episode of The Office called New Boss, which is where Michael quits Dunder Mifflin and decides to start the Michael Scott paper company. And obviously that company didn't last long, but that is an episode that really was startling because it showed you that the world of this show could actually really change and it wasn't gonna get trapped forever. in uh repeating the same sitcom trope over and over, but more importantly, that action leads to Pam's complete overhaul as a character, where she goes from exception to sales. And becomes much more forceful and I think interesting. So that's my choice. Yeah, good one. Sarah. In honor of our esteemed colleague Kim Reed, I sort of wanted to pick the episode of Felicity in which we finally get rid of Julie. It was really a game changer so much as a game winner. So I don't know why I have a boner for fringe this week, but I am gonna go with the season one finale There's More Than One of Everything, which is the possibly greatest zoom out reveal in TV history It I think intros or at least solidifies the alternate universe stuff. There's William Bell in the World Trade Center, enough said. It was really a fantastic ending and you could not wait to see what was gonna happen in season two. So that's my choice Good picks everybody.
