Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has returned for its fourth and penultimate season, and judging by the first six episodes we’ve seen, they’re sticking to their commitment to make as many kooky episodes as is reasonable; we tell you (spoiler-free) whether that’s a good thing. Ask EHG invites us to share which new emoji should be in the next batch, choose the next celebrity to guest on a daytime soap, and much more. Seth pitches Tom Holland’s “Umbrella” from Lip Sync Battle for induction into the Tiny Musical Performances Canon. Then, after naming the week’s Not Quite Winners And Losers, we mark the 10th anniversary of VCRs officially going obsolete by sharing our memories of our own VHS eras. Where are you sending us? Well, this is a fun one. Really? I'm gonna use the topic pendant.
Dave
00:19
This is the Extra Extra Hot Great Podcast, episode 421 for the July 25th, 2026 weekend. I am overprotective engineer David T. Cole, and I'm here with Asteroid Belt Birth Video Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
00:38
Give my Martian the shot
Dave
00:41
And judgmental cadet Tara Ariano
Tara
00:44
Your accent is wrong.
Dave
00:54
Welcome everybody to another episode of Extra Extra Hot Great. Thank you for your continued support and speaking about your support. We just hit a new milestone on the club campaign. So this is what it means for you. Number one, a new sticker. What sticker? Up to you. We need your suggestions. This is a crowdsourced sticker. If you have an idea, you don't have to give us the final design, just what you think it should be, something related to the podcast. Go to our Discord, go to the Extra Hot Great Podcast channel there, or go to the Patreon post that I will make for that. Throw your suggestions in there. We'll follow it up with a poll to vote on what is the one that you want. And then we'll follow that up with a sign-up period where you can give us our address so that we may mail you your sticker. But that's not all. Also, this milestone means we're starting listener game time for this show. And that will mean a little rearranging of this show. We'll probably integrate extra credit back into Ask EHG since they're kind of similar, he says, knowing they're exactly the same thing. And then move listener game time to the end of the show, like Game Time is the end of the show of our regular one.
Sarah
02:06
Not that
Dave
02:07
I know what you're thinking. Ooh, I want in on that. And yeah, you can get in on that. There is a sign-up link in your show notes, but just a word of caution for my sanity. I am clumping records together. So three people will compete all month. They're going to record a month's worth at a time with three people. I can't do 16, 20 people at a time for a month. It's just not enough hours in the day. So with that caveat, please do sign up We'll start recording probably within a month and a half. I have to get off some ducks in the road tech-wise and also content-wise So show notes for signups, Discord or Patreon posts for your sticker suggestions. We want all that good stuff and we will start making all that happen for real in the month or month and a half ahead.
Tara
02:55
That's so exciting. I had to go to the Extra Hot Great Club page, which is, of course, extrahotgreat.com/club To remind myself what the next milestone is after this, and it's the extra extra hot grates our awards show
Dave
03:10
Yep.
Tara
03:10
In noted here, the award show that doesn't matter. Guess what? All award shows are award shows that don't matter.
Dave
03:16
Well, that is true.
Tara
03:16
Sorry to get political, but uh
Dave
03:18
But if you know the way that we have run award shows in the past, you know they're mostly nonsense.
Tara
03:23
Yeah.
Dave
03:24
So it's not like what was the best show of the year? It was like, what was the best instance of Somebody throwing up that made Sarah in fact throw up after that. Awards like that.
Sarah
03:33
Yeah. It's like the tiny canon, but writ something
Dave
03:38
Yeah.
Tara
03:39
Yeah.
Dave
03:39
We should start a segment called Make Sarah Barf.
Tara
03:41
Nah, should we?
Dave
03:42
Yeah, maybe not.
Sarah
03:43
No, we shouldn't
Dave
03:45
Yeah, so we're closing in on that one. That would be fun too. I knew that was maybe coming. But I totally misjudged the trajectory of the campaign. And at the beginning of the year I started making notes on very good things of TV that I enjoyed. And then I thought, oh, we're not going to get there this year. I'll scrap it. And then we might get there this year. But stuff like Paul Giamatti talking about chicken on Star Trek school and stuff like that.
Tara
04:09
Yes, Star Trek School
Dave
04:10
I started making notes and I stopped and I'm not kicking myself because there's a chance this might happen.
Tara
04:14
Well, make Dave keep kicking himself.
Dave
04:14
Oh well. Yes.
Tara
04:17
Up your pledge if you can. If you can't, tell everyone you know to uh join.
Dave
04:22
And speaking about Star Trek moments
Tara
04:24
And speaking about Star Trek moments, we are in fact here to talk about Star Trek Strange New Worlds season four. Our old friend captain Christopher Pike, Anson Mount, I think we've all summited Anson Mount of the Starship Enterprise has been through it, from a dark preview of his fate to the complicated ending of his last romantic relationship.
Dave
04:43
Point of order.
Tara
04:44
Yeah.
Dave
04:45
We've all mounted Anson Mount, but you need a Sherpa to get over that last bit of air.
Sarah
04:50
Oh my god, you definitely do. Supplemental oxygen territory. It's so beautiful
Tara
04:56
Anyway, it stands to reason that Pike might want to ignore his feelings and lose himself in his work, which forces his crew to do the same. Fortunately, he does take a note from his number one Una Chin Riley, Rebecca Romijn, and gives everyone some weekends to wild out amid all of the very serious space exploration. The show's created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. The fourth season premiered with one episode on Paramount Plus July twenty-third. We got access to the first six, but we'll be careful about spoilers. We will also have Speaking of supplemental, a supplemental co-host slog about episode five that we will drop.
Dave
05:32
Yes, which we felt a lot about.
Tara
05:35
We did.
Dave
05:37
But can't talk about it otherwise.
Tara
05:37
So
Sarah
05:39
No
Tara
05:39
We cannot it's true.
Dave
05:40
Because we're like puppets on strings for Paramount with their embargoes
Tara
05:45
We're being controlled by powerful other people.
Dave
05:48
It's like their hands are upper asses.
Tara
05:50
Yep, so we'll we're recording a special segment on that that we'll drop the week of that episode.
Sarah
05:51
We got it, Dave.
Tara
05:56
But for now, let's do the Chen check in, Sarah. Should our listeners watch Star Trek Strange New Worlds season four?
Sarah
06:02
Yeah, based on what I've seen, it is a moderate return to form. So I would say yes, if you were a little bit not bummed out, but just sort of Disappointed by season three compared to the first two. Uh yeah, I think season four will scratch that mounty itch. I don't know.
Tara
06:19
Dave
Dave
06:21
You ever have Mounty H? It's a Canadian disease, but oof
Sarah
06:25
There's a cream for it.
Dave
06:26
Yep. I enjoyed this more than season three for sure, but I will say there is a checkerboard pattern to what we've watched so far. 1-3-5, really good. 2-4-6, not bad, but not as good. So you're like, uh odds, odds, yay.
Tara
06:40
Mm-hmm.
Dave
06:40
for so far this season.
Tara
06:41
I agree with Dave, so let's just go straight there, especially since we all said this was less of a slog than season three. So Dave, explain what makes the fun episodes fun in the broadest possible terms.
Dave
06:52
Well, Strange New Worlds, as we all know, has a compunction just to say this is our gimmick episode. And then the further you got on, it became these are our gimmick episodes for the season.
Tara
07:04
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:05
And this one sort of you can tell a lot of the episodes started as I want to do this in Star Trek. And the first one is I uh I want to sort of tell a prototypical 1970s sci-fi short story from one of those sci-fi magazines, and I want it to be Star Trek, and it's gonna tell this story that's very cyclical, and we'll get into it
Sarah
07:11
Is it
Tara
07:24
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:25
Uh and then three is uh trope. We've seen other places. I know I can't really talk about the other ones.
Tara
07:32
No, but if you've seen the movie The Hangover, uh some elements will be similar.
Dave
07:34
Yes. Very good.
Tara
07:37
It it will evoke that for you
Dave
07:38
It's a very colorful episode.
Tara
07:40
Yes.
Dave
07:41
And then episode five, the one we have a lot of feelings for that we felt, of course, is there as well.
Tara
07:46
Uh-huh. Yep
Dave
07:48
This season has a lot of those, which is here's the thing I want to do in Star Trek and here we go.
Tara
07:52
Mm-hmm.
Dave
07:52
Those ones actually turned out really well this time. Sometimes they don't hit for me. The musical episode was sort of like I didn't really felt it fired on all cylinders. The ones here do a better job. I think they did a really good job with the fifth episode. The first episode was fun and a little more grounded in science fiction tradition So I think overall I thought this season so far six episodes that we were exposed to is pretty good.
Sarah
08:19
Yeah, I agree. My issue and Dan's issue and our esteemed colleague John Ramos's issue with season three is that it just seemed like a lot of not bottle episodes, but that probably due to scheduling conflicts, the cast didn't seem to be like all together that much.
Tara
08:36
Yeah, I think that's a good idea.
Sarah
08:37
It just seemed to not gain any momentum. Like it was like all emotions at eleven. This is super important for the season arc. And there were no like Alien of the Week. Like, let's just have them go through a Tesseract and see what happens.
Dave
08:54
But the alien of the week, unfortunately, were the Gorn, because they were seem to be in almost every episode and they are not a compelling adversary.
Tara
08:54
Yeah. Yes
Sarah
09:00
Yeah. Yeah. And uh our other esteemed colleague, Alan Sepinwall in his review, which we will link in the show notes, uh, was talking about the if every episode is a special episode, none of them is especially special effect that seemed to be that shadow that seemed to be over season three. Even though the first episode of this was like I don't even know. Jurassic Stark.
Tara
09:26
Nice.
Sarah
09:26
I don't know how much I should say.
Tara
09:29
No, you can s it's that one's out, so go ahead.
Dave
09:31
Yeah, that's the one we can talk about.
Sarah
09:32
Yeah, like that was like a little bit corny, I guess, but then it was like I like this show because I like the Characters, I like the people, I like seeing them all interact with each other and tackle a problem in a star trekky way The season premiere is that and also someone punches a dino and it's like, okay, this is more Fun and feels more like the franchise and what made it and this iteration of it good and entertaining. It was just a little less lofty
Tara
10:09
Yeah,
Sarah
10:09
That was a relief. I was glad to be reunited with these people, mostly.
Dave
10:14
The first episode and the general gist of the first episode is the Enterprise this is a spoiler. If you haven't watched it, do not continue. The Enterprise for Reasons goes back 65 million years, hmm, 65 million, and encounters Martians, yes, Martians. eventually unwittingly gives the Martians a weapon to destroy their rivals who live on a planet between Mars and Earth, and that planet is blowed up.
Sarah
10:42
Between Mars and Jupiter, I think, actually.
Dave
10:44
Yeah, sorry. Yeah, the other way.
Sarah
10:45
Yeah.
Dave
10:46
Becomes the asteroid belt after it blows up. And then piece of that explosion hits Earth, and that was the famous asteroid that killed all the dinosaurs and led to the rise of mammals. And so the question was, how can Star Trek Enterprise be responsible for humanity while still actually being humanity?
Tara
11:04
Mm-hmm
Sarah
11:04
And acting in an inhumane manner because of the Prime Directive.
Tara
11:08
Yes
Dave
11:08
Right.
Sarah
11:08
Yes.
Dave
11:09
And part of that is them beaming onto this alien planet they don't quite yet realize as Earth, seeing these giant things lumbering around. Looks a lot like a T-Rex. Uh-oh, here's one that looks a lot like a Velociraptor. Better punch it in his head. And then the rest of the story that I just told you comes up. And it just felt very sixties sci-fi 70s Omni sort of the short story.
Tara
11:32
Totally, yep.
Sarah
11:32
Mm-hmm. Omni, nice.
Dave
11:35
Yeah, and I really enjoyed that sense. And to S Sarah's point, they're all in it. They're all doing it. There's an away party. uh with a few people and then the rest of them are on Enterprise and are dealing with the Martians there. I thought it was just a like like a tight episode. It seemed to me like it was a sort of story that and here is the inverse, could have been a movie, but then they realized it would be much better if they just stuck it down to fifty minutes and told it really quickly. And they did and it worked. I enjoyed the first one. Of the special episodes, let's call them. I don't think it's the best, but it's not the worst, and I enjoyed the conceit.
Tara
12:12
Yep, I agree. Also, just to backtrack to what makes this better than season three, no offense to Pike's girlfriend, but a lot of season three was about her and she did not do it for me.
Sarah
12:22
Yeah.
Tara
12:23
Not the way she did it for him, if you know what I'm saying.
Sarah
12:26
Yeah. I sort of like that actor by the end, but
Tara
12:29
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
12:30
until we got to that sort of end game lead up. Last season it was like, oh my God, she's so boring.
Tara
12:34
Yeah
Sarah
12:36
Like, marry her or kill her off and
Dave
12:38
The weird thing about that season three arc, it was just like this is like echoes of Star Trek the motion pitcher. I just like and why would you go there with like, you know, merging with a higher entity and being the Sentinel of the Cosmos and all this shit. It's just like, oh god. It w it just it felt like that or like a Doctor Who or something like that.
Tara
12:54
Yes. Or like a Marvel thing
Dave
12:57
Like Yeah, kind of. It was just like it was too spacey and not in the outer space sense of it for me.
Tara
13:05
Yeah, yeah. Broadly speaking, as you've already said, we're alternating fun episodes with kind of snoozy ones and like the premiere story for me I thought was a good case study for how the show can have fun without getting too gimmicky, although I understand wanting to load up on high concept episodes, especially when they know the end is nigh, like there's only so many they're gonna be able to do.
Dave
13:25
Yeah.
Tara
13:25
And I do think overall, with some exceptions, the musical episode I agree was not the greatest, but the one where they were all playing characters who made a sci-fi TV show in the sixties.
Dave
13:36
Oh yeah, that was
Tara
13:36
That was a fun one. I thought was great. If you don't rein it in, you're making community. So I understand why they have to try to, you know, tamp those down.
Sarah
13:42
Yeah, yeah
Dave
13:42
Yeah. Yeah.
Tara
13:46
Use do it sparingly.
Dave
13:47
I I agree. And and some of the ones that we're talking about in the checkerboard pattern aren't quite as high concept as others.
Tara
13:55
Yes.
Dave
13:55
Obviously, we've all seen the trailer. We know there is a puppet episode coming at some point.
Tara
13:59
We do
Dave
14:00
this season. They're not all that crazy. Like this one is good, but it's not like I wouldn't call it a gimmick episode. It's just like here's the story beat we want to address and here's how we're going to do it.
Tara
14:06
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dave
14:11
But there's another one that is a high concept one that is probably the worst episode, and you see a glimpse of it in the credits because the credits this season are little snippets. of the Enterprise sort of flying through scenes or motifs from the episodes. And there's one where it looks like Sky Captain in the world of tomorrow, all black and white and Art Deco Art Nouveau or whatever
Tara
14:34
Mm-hmm.
Dave
14:35
And that episode, I hate it.
Tara
14:37
Yeah, that was a real snooze.
Dave
14:37
I did not like that episode. It was bad. So not all of their gimmick episodes are firing too. And then between all these ones you've got the sort of more exploration Oops, something's bad is happening with the Tachyons episodes, which are always fine.
Tara
14:51
Yeah.
Sarah
14:52
Mm-hmm.
Tara
14:54
Mm-hmm. Yeah. I think the most interesting characters are pretty clearly Pike and Spock, do we all concur? And Kirk when we see him.
Dave
15:02
I concur.
Tara
15:03
James James T.
Sarah
15:03
Mm-hmm.
Tara
15:04
Kirk when he shows up, not his brother.
Dave
15:06
I concur, but I'm spelling it in Klingon with a Q and an apostrophe.
Tara
15:09
Oh, you don't it's not I can cur I concirk.
Dave
15:10
A concur
Tara
15:14
Anyway, did anyone else in the supporting cast Though really impress you with how they dramatize growth or crises in their characters, other than punching a dinosaur breaking their hand and feeling no pain. Sarah.
Sarah
15:26
I mean, her. She's always been a favorite character of mine, and I've always liked Erica as well.
Tara
15:31
Mm-hmm. We're talking about Lon and Ortega, in case you know them by their other names.
Sarah
15:36
Yes, but I also feel like the show has struggled to understand the proportions of who we want to see and how much.
Tara
15:47
Yes
Sarah
15:47
And that was an issue with season three, that it's like, here's the showcase episode for X character.
Tara
15:53
Yeah.
Sarah
15:53
It's not that the actors aren't good, and it's not that I'm not interested. It's that the show sometimes mistakes. This is a successful character that viewers are interested in. for doesn't understand the proportions, so you need to not make that an entire 50 minute Episode, this is another issue. Like episodes could be a little shorter, like tightened up a little, I think, generally, but if season four is going to continue focusing on, I don't know, Ortega and um
Tara
16:18
I agree. Yeah.
Sarah
16:27
And Scotty seem to be at odds early in the season. And if they're gonna sort of focus on these character growth moments That's fine, but you can't like pull everyone out of context and be like, here's like literally she shrunk down and in a bottle and it's going on for 52 minutes. Like that's just not how the show works best.
Dave
16:49
Yeah.
Tara
16:50
Yeah.
Sarah
16:50
So not yet.
Dave
16:50
Did you get to episode three, sir? Okay. I think the whole thing between Scotty and Ortega is is there to set up episode three and their dynamic and rule in episode three. Yeah. So it works in that regard. And four, five, six, I think they basically, for the most part, drop that back and forth.
Tara
17:07
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
17:08
Yeah
Tara
17:09
Yeah. It is a funny choice to sort of frame it that or write it the way that we're used to seeing where it's like an enemies to lovers arc where it's like, I don't think one of those is not interested in it.
Dave
17:18
Yeah.
Sarah
17:18
Yeah, I don't
Dave
17:19
Enemies to good chums.
Tara
17:21
Yeah.
Dave
17:22
Yeah
Sarah
17:22
Mm-hmm.
Tara
17:23
For me, Dr. M'Benga is the most dud character, and having him opposite Chapel most of the time only highlights how blah he is for me.
Dave
17:27
mm, uh
Tara
17:32
Dave, it sounds like you disagree.
Dave
17:33
I like the fact that he's not McCoy, right?
Tara
17:36
True.
Dave
17:36
We know in the past that he's had some bad times in war, so he's like a wartime doctor, and because of that, he's very reserved and efficient with his words.
Tara
17:41
Yeah
Dave
17:46
And I appreciate that, but yes, it's not the most dynamic note for a character. There is a beat later in the season where he is in peril and it doesn't really go anywhere.
Tara
17:58
Yeah.
Dave
17:59
There was one of those episodes where I'm like For me that character though is Uhura. I just don't think she ever really gets really great things to do.
Tara
18:08
Yeah, and she's and it's not because she's not capable, because I do think the actress is good.
Dave
18:12
I agree. I mean not like Uhura had a lot of moments in Star Trek generally speaking, except of course for her famous fan dance.
Sarah
18:13
Yeah
Tara
18:19
Of course
Dave
18:22
So there are some characters that aren't getting the sort of personality attention in the writing, I would say.
Tara
18:29
Yeah.
Dave
18:29
I don't blame either of the actors for sure. Scotty is like okay. As far as alternate Scotties go, he was louder, but I think I prefer Simon Pegg's Scotty.
Tara
18:40
Simon Pegg, yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dave
18:41
Yeah, to this guy.
Tara
18:42
I agree with that too.
Sarah
18:42
Yeah, agree.
Tara
18:43
This this guy is really giving Canadian actor they found uh derogatory.
Dave
18:48
He really is.
Tara
18:49
Anyway, Sarah, you were saying
Dave
18:50
Yeah. Oh, I got the mounty virus help.
Sarah
18:54
Yeah, I mean, Carol Kane's care what is that character saying, Palia?
Tara
18:58
Pelea, Pelea
Sarah
18:59
Pelia, she is amazing, but that's definitely a case where they know exactly how much of her
Dave
19:06
Yep, banana and smoothie.
Tara
19:07
Yes
Sarah
19:07
to use and then they save it for like when it's an obvious showcase, which I think and the way they rendered her uh all felt. was was a pacing, especially the hair. But yeah, I mean I don't think it's an acting problem. I think it's just like trying to give depth to certain characters who like canonically it's like They open hailing frequencies. This is their function.
Dave
19:33
Yeah, right.
Tara
19:34
Yeah,
Sarah
19:34
It doesn't always work out.
Dave
19:36
Yeah, it is a switchboard operator, basically.
Sarah
19:39
Mm-hmm.
Tara
19:39
Yep.
Dave
19:39
The one character that I think does a good job, but I always wanted to see more of is number one.
Sarah
19:40
Yeah.
Tara
19:44
Yeah, I agree with that.
Sarah
19:44
Yes, agree.
Dave
19:45
Like she had a couple showcase episodes. The lower decks one was like one where she had some moments where, you know, she's learning about her future history and all that.
Sarah
19:51
Mm-hmm.
Dave
19:55
And they're setting something up in the first few episodes of this for her.
Tara
20:00
Yeah.
Dave
20:00
I don't is it in the first episode?
Sarah
20:00
Mm-hmm
Dave
20:01
I don't think it is, right?
Tara
20:02
Maybe. No, it is.
Dave
20:03
I bet. Is it?
Tara
20:04
Are you talking about Yes, that happens at the end of episode one
Sarah
20:04
Yeah, no, she gets a the promotion, you mean?
Dave
20:06
Yeah, okay, great. Okay, sorry.
Sarah
20:08
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:08
Right, okay.
Sarah
20:09
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:09
So they're setting her up for future adventures off the Enterprise. They have to start thinking about who will not be on the Enterprise when it comes time for the original series timeline. So, you know, this is probably her end game for that.
Sarah
20:19
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:22
But I wish her well, her character well, because I hope we see her again in the future on something else if they go down that path.
Tara
20:22
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
20:29
You know
Tara
20:29
All right, so we're it was a good season. We're all saying watch it, and then we're gonna step away and talk.
Dave
20:33
Wait, wait, wait, wait, I got some more things about the first episode.
Tara
20:34
Oh, okay. Well then wrap you wrap it up and then we'll do the puppet talk.
Dave
20:36
Okay. Just some random things. Did not enjoy the Doctor Who joke that uh Pelia lays down.
Tara
20:41
I okay, I caught that too, and then I thought I was crazy. Thank you for confirming that was a Doctor Who joke
Dave
20:47
She says something about I rem I seem to remember I was in a telephone booth or something like that.
Tara
20:50
I was yes. In the first episode.
Sarah
20:52
Mm-hmm.
Dave
20:52
Did anybody else think the stuck up Vulcan was look like Jessica Alba?
Tara
20:56
No, but you're right. Now that you say it, I can see it.
Sarah
20:58
No, but yeah, you're totally right.
Dave
20:59
Yeah.
Tara
20:59
Mm-hmm.
Dave
21:00
And the other thing just about the show generally is when they have a fantastical world, and we have a lot of them in this one, the beginning of this episode the first episode is on like this floaty rock western world.
Tara
21:13
Yep.
Dave
21:13
It's like what if Monument Valley was upside down and floating?
Sarah
21:13
Uh-huh.
Dave
21:18
And I don't mind that creativity, but I just wish it didn't look like it was one hundred and ten percent computer generated all the time. It's that Marvel thing where they always try to make everything look absolutely perfect instead of making things look like the way light behaves.
Sarah
21:27
Yeah,
Dave
21:35
Like If you have a very, very sunny day and everything like you're gonna have blowouts in the sky and stuff like that. And these are things they always peel back to try to make it look perfect in every way, even though That's not the way we perceive things. I think if they went back on that, it would make those worlds seem more immersive. Because they're riding space horses, space town, planet.
Tara
21:52
Mm-hmm. Spurs is
Dave
21:56
Yeah, and they stop and like oh okay, they're basically on the flat part of the stage and around them is CGI that they blend in with the sand they poured in from Malibu Beach.
Sarah
21:56
Mm-hmm.
Tara
22:05
Yeah, mm-hmm
Dave
22:07
And I just wish they could do a better job there. You know, whatever. All right. Shall we get into s episode five, which we're going to talk about now, but then hold for that week's extra extra accurate.
Tara
22:22
We sure are, so check back with us four weeks from now.
Dave
22:23
Alright. Bye bye.
Tara
22:26
Bye
Dave
22:32
Well, we're back from our little side trip in the cosmos to talk about a little something we call Ask EHG.
Clip
22:48
That came that.
Dave
22:56
If I remember, I gotta make the boop a communicator opening up. Alright, it's time for Ask EHE, which means first we must judge last week's Ask Ask EHE question. Let's spin the wheel of judgment. Sarah, you are now the judge
Sarah
23:18
Excellent. Hello. Last week's Ask Ask EHG question. Uh it's from Sunetra who said, because I misheard Elspeth's question last week as this What piece of media would be most hilariously improved by adding at least one furry into the mix? Many good answers here. We got a couple runners up. See, Kent. Care Bears, but in a twist, a human known as a hairless is adopted by the community might watch from George Melrose Place Matt's new boyfriend, Fred, is the perfect guy. He is sexy, rich, and very openly gay. However, he has one quirk. On weekends, he is Fifi the Poodle. Though Matt isn't ashamed of this personally, he doesn't tell his friends who would be bitches about it. In one episode, Matt goes with Fifi to Furcon Pasadena and meets some of Phoebe's friends, including a man in a blue eagle fursuit and surgeon's outfit called Dr. Birdie the Eagle. But little does Matt know that underneath that neon beak is Peter! Will Matt find out about Peter's secret? If so, what will Matt use this information for? Also, how does Amanda not know this? Or does she? All excellent questions, George, and I think you've got a bright future in fanfic. But Our actual winner is Corey M. Law and Order SBU could benefit from adding a furry to answer Ice T's various questions that come up in the show. For example, what is docking? On top of that, the furry is dressed like McGruff the crime dog and gets along well with Munch. Perfect, no notes. Corey M, please contact David T. Cole on Discord for your winning sticker.
Dave
24:58
Corey M is one of our people that submitted through the website, so you can just email me at David at Cole. fyi and give me your mailing address and I will get that out to you.
Sarah
25:05
All right.
Tara
25:07
Hell yeah.
Sarah
25:07
Thanks, Corey M
Dave
25:08
All right, let's get to your questions. First one comes from Seth. Seth says the season 28 premiere of Big Brother featured a Velociraptor not getting punched out. throwing one of the contestants into a volcano where they quickly melted into a skeleton. Question is this is there a reality star that you would like to see thrown into a volcano by a Velociraptor? I took myself off this one because all my references for reality shows are 25 years old now. Tara, what is your thinking on this one?
Tara
25:38
Obviously there are tons, but I had to narrow it down. I'm bringing two, one extra for Dave, who's bringing none. Eureka from Drag Race, this is a a queen that keeps getting brought back because she's a fan favorite, apparently. Not this fan. No thanks. I don't see what everyone else sees in her But my truest answer is Jonathan Towns from last season of The Amazing Race, one of a not so proud tradition of Amazing Race husbands. basically mentally abusing their wives on camera. So I could pick many, but he was just the most recent. So um Fuck that guy. Also because when he got feedback from people being like Wow, Jonathan is really abusive to his wife. He was like, um, I have autism. It's like, no, that's not an excuse, actually.
Sarah
26:22
No, yeah, that guy, Christ
Dave
26:22
That's wow If we're talking about the whole production, then I would put Jeff Propes up there. But he gets thrown into it every episode, and then every episode a new dinosaur takes over as running tribal council.
Tara
26:35
Yeah, sure.
Dave
26:35
Okay, great.
Tara
26:36
Sarah
Sarah
26:36
Yeah. Teresa Judice from Real Housewives.
Dave
26:40
Damon, on the heels of Kim Reed's discussion about Big Brother and time travel, you are asked to cast a time travel reality show where contestants die horribly in ye old olden times. What happens, sir?
Sarah
26:53
This is the true story of seven influencers picked to live in a fort and have their phones and crocs confiscated. To find out what happens when people stop having internet, electricity, indoor plumbing, or a reasonable chance of survival in sixteenth century colonial Virginia and start getting killed by the Croatoan. Real world Roanoke. Dave.
Dave
27:16
Reddit armchair historians must navigate their supposed areas of expertise. It's basically a series of them going um actually in actual historical settings. in which they are usually killed by chieftains or disease. Torah
Sarah
27:30
Mm-hmm.
Tara
27:31
Say goodbye to Michael Rappaport of The Traders, Cy from the new cast of The Real Housewives of New York City, Taylor Frankie Paul from Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. and not The Bachelorette. Chris Souls from The Bachelor killed someone on a tractor in 2017. And Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild Fame, but we count him because he was on VH1's couples therapy, all dead of dysentery on the Oregon Trail. So sad
Dave
27:57
Rightwood as the saw okay As the saga of the unwashed Jizz Sheets approaches its climax next week on Below Deck Med, I was wondering what TV show should next do a three-part arc about Jizz Sheets.
Sarah
28:05
As it were.
Tara
28:13
Can I enter before we answer? There was a s headline about Richard Jenkins circa DTF St. Louis where he said, I found out what the phrase DTF meant from being on this show and my comment was, We have failed Richard Jenkins.
Dave
28:24
Yeah Yeah.
Tara
28:27
He should never have to know that. Although the show was good.
Sarah
28:29
Ajá
Dave
28:29
Yeah.
Tara
28:30
This is how I feel about the Unwashed Jizz Sheets saga, which I did not look into and I am not happy that I know about it now. Okay, Dave, proceed.
Dave
28:38
Right, okay. Also, uh the word arc in here makes me uncomfortable.
Tara
28:43
Yeah.
Sarah
28:44
Yes, climax is not great either.
Dave
28:46
My answer here is Downton Abbey after the Mr. Pamook episode. I don't think it's that rageous of an idea to have a three-part arc on Downton Abbey about uh just sheets. And it could be one for each of the uh daughters.
Tara
28:58
That's true.
Dave
28:58
Yeah, something there. Competition, maybe. Who has the jizziest sheets?
Tara
29:04
Oh my God.
Dave
29:06
Find out a Downton Abbey
Sarah
29:08
Not Edith next
Dave
29:10
What's a juice sheet?
Tara
29:10
Nope. So true High potential only because I think Morgan would be funny about it and it her making jokes would make Karadek uncomfortable.
Dave
29:17
Hmm
Tara
29:21
Sarah.
Sarah
29:21
Slow Horses could probably get several episodes out of such a saga, given the role Jackson Lamb's
Tara
29:27
Oh my God.
Sarah
29:28
volatile relationship with personal hygiene plays in the story.
Tara
29:31
Uh huh
Sarah
29:33
I mean his Jizz like the Jizz couch, Jizz and Fart couch is like practically a sentient character, so.
Dave
29:37
Yeah.
Tara
29:39
Oh God.
Dave
29:40
We know he can't use his socks because they're pull of holes.
Tara
29:45
But also it just takes us back to like when Diana's asking him, when did you last have that coat cleaned?
Sarah
29:45
Gross
Tara
29:50
And he's like, You can clean a coat.
Dave
29:50
Is that
Tara
29:51
And I feel like that's his attitude towards sheets as well.
Dave
29:54
Is below deck colon med called that because they're worried the people that watch the show don't know how to spell Mediterranean?
Tara
30:01
I think it was originally spelt the whole word.
Dave
30:03
Was it?
Tara
30:04
I think so.
Dave
30:04
That's pretty funny.
Sarah
30:04
Yeah.
Tara
30:05
Anyway.
Dave
30:05
Jovial Gent, what is the fantasy series called The Saga of the Unwashed Jizz Sheets all about?
Tara
30:13
It's about the advent of a new race that can spontaneously generate from DNA-rich fluid left on porous fabric. Dave.
Sarah
30:21
You barf.
Dave
30:21
It is a heist plot TV show about stealing back figuring dance and the modal nodes original Jizz Masterpiece music sheets for the Cantina band song from Star Wars from the Mob Underworld. Sarah
Sarah
30:34
I know that fantasy series was the brief, brief, but once I thought of the documentary now episode called The Shroud of Immaturin. All about the teenage Jesus' struggles with self-love. I couldn't get that out of my head. Sorry. So only fantasies here are Jesus's about Ms Magdalene down the creek. Sorry. So sorry.
Dave
30:56
Another question from Seth. John Oliver is currently making some ways for a stint on General Hospital. His appearance was conditional on his character receiving a selly name and being slapped. Which celebrities would you like to see pop up on a daytime soap and what requirements have they included in their rider? Sarah, who is your pick?
Sarah
31:15
I went with David Lee Ross. But doing what he did on the Sopranos, basically playing himself, chilling in like not a crowd scene, but like a group scene at whatever the whatever General Hospital's like bar or club set is. He doesn't have any like real dialogue. He could just be himself and his writer is the same. No green MMs backstage to make sure the producers actually read the fucker.
Dave
31:39
Can his dialogue just be his howls from his music? Wow!
Sarah
31:43
Sure.
Dave
31:43
Yeah, okay, great.
Sarah
31:43
Or like occasionally in the background, he's just like leaping off the stage and doing a split and then being taken off at a stretcher and no one comments on it at all.
Dave
31:48
That's right. That's right.
Sarah
31:51
It's just like happening in the background.
Dave
31:53
No, this is what happens. He jumps off the stage, he dies, and then the stretcher is got the blanket over his head, but you see the leopard skin tights of his legs sticking out of the bottom half.
Sarah
32:06
Bless his heart.
Dave
32:07
Excuse me, tiger, tiger pattern.
Sarah
32:09
Mm-hmm.
Tara
32:09
Well, having recently watched him day drinking with Seth Myers, I think Paul Rudd would have a good time on Days of Our Lives and that he would want to do a big wet hot American Summer style comedy double take in each of his scenes like he does in the uh in the talent show scene.
Sarah
32:21
Yeah.
Tara
32:24
Dave.
Dave
32:25
Ironically, on The Young and the Restless, Joel Kinnaman wants to play every young main character as their grumpy 85-year-old self. The writer demands his characters never die, just get older and older and older. Even if they hit like 140 years, he's gonna play them.
Tara
32:42
Hmm
Dave
32:43
Undefined, that is their name. I'm frustrated that bigger and bigger stars seem to think that doing sleazy commercials is no longer beneath them. Give their T V character some poetic justice for the actor's choice to endorse crap. I actually didn't go with the TV character. I went straight to the actor for this one. Jerry O'Connell, who does kind of crypto casino app commercials last year I saw.
Sarah
33:07
Mm-hmm
Tara
33:08
Yikes
Dave
33:08
has to endorse the idea of Joel McHale. Sarah
Sarah
33:15
Jon Hamm's Don Draper goes on a junket to Atlantic City to try to win the Caesars account and wakes up in a bathtub full of ice. Notice next with Says call the hotel doctor because we cut off your balls. You like endorsing BetMGM so much? I bet you'll love a character undergoing a bilateral orchidectomy
Dave
33:34
What did he endorse?
Sarah
33:36
Bet MGM.
Dave
33:37
What is that?
Sarah
33:37
It's a like it's like fan duel, but from MGM.
Tara
33:40
Gambling gambling apt
Sarah
33:41
Yeah, online gambling
Dave
33:43
To do with the studio MGM?
Tara
33:45
No, like the casino, you know, the MGM Grand.
Sarah
33:47
Mm-hmm.
Dave
33:47
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tara
33:48
I mean, I'm sure they're associated in some way
Dave
33:48
Okay. Yeah, it makes sense. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Tara
33:53
Dinjarin, aka is a Jaren, I forget, it's been so long.
Dave
33:56
I don't know.
Tara
33:57
Who cares?
Dave
33:57
Who cares?
Tara
33:57
The the Mandalorian has uh sadly been crushed into a cube with a bunch of other scrap metal because Pedro Pascal did ads for merge mansion, but actually
Dave
33:59
Yeah.
Tara
34:05
The character could not have a worse fate than being in the Mandalorian Grogu, so let's say that's his punishment.
Dave
34:11
Merch Merch Mansion?
Tara
34:13
Merge
Dave
34:13
Oh merge Mansion. Okay.
Sarah
34:15
Crushed into a cube
Tara
34:15
That is I don't know where these mobile games get the money to hire the people they do to endorse them.
Dave
34:16
Boy, there are some stupid games out there
Tara
34:22
I truly don't. One of them has Courtney Cox and Lisa Coudre in the same ad.
Sarah
34:27
Mm-hmm.
Tara
34:27
Like both of you?
Dave
34:28
Wow.
Tara
34:28
Good God. Anyway, Dave.
Dave
34:30
Well the thing about all those games is that they're supported by like 0001% of the user base, and they just like can't help them. It's still like predatory lottery.
Tara
34:41
Mm-hmm.
Dave
34:42
stuff basically and they just can't help themselves when they spend ten thousand dollars a quarter on like merging dragons into bigger dragons or whatever the Hell that is.
Tara
34:42
Yeah. Yeah.
Dave
34:50
Yikes. Alright, let's move on. Jovial Gent, take the name of a musician, add the word challenge to the end. What is the challenge that you now need to complete?
Tara
34:59
Everybody take the big bobper challenge. No, it's not getting killed in a plane crash. It's getting on the phone and going, You did what? You want me to what? etc. Sarah.
Sarah
35:11
Policole Challenge. You don't want to wait. You must now sing an entire album, half an octave higher than is comfortable either to deliver or to hear. Dave.
Dave
35:22
The Phil Collins challenge is picking fights with drumsticks at the Alamo. So we'll look it up. Millsnack, which new emoji should be in the next batch of new emojis? Ooh, Sarah.
Sarah
35:36
Lobster roll, it's been time. What the Fuck?
Dave
35:39
Hmm.
Sarah
35:40
Dave.
Dave
35:41
A fat bag of like New York City garbage. Cause I always like to call people garbage people and now we would have an emoji for that Trash can is different. It has to be a fat garbage bag, maybe with a couple flies on top.
Tara
35:51
Yeah. Yep.
Sarah
35:53
Mm-hmm.
Tara
35:54
That's a good one
Dave
35:54
Or, alternatively Second choice, a paper shopping bag, grocery bag, with both a baguette sticking out of one side of it and a celery stock sticking out of the other side.
Sarah
36:01
And a celery. Yep. Oh, I love that
Tara
36:04
Yep, that's nice.
Dave
36:05
Yeah.
Tara
36:06
Yeah, I'm also always looking for the foods they don't have. So here were some that I confirmed were not in there now.
Dave
36:12
Mm-hmm.
Tara
36:13
Nachos
Dave
36:14
Really?
Tara
36:14
Yeah. Raspberry, there's other berries, not that one. Pickle, there's cucumber, but not pickle.
Dave
36:20
Oh, pickles coming.
Tara
36:21
Pickle's coming?
Dave
36:21
Pickle pickles in the next batch, which looks exactly like a cucumber, so I don't know what they're gonna do to make the because we already have cucumber.
Tara
36:22
Okay, great.
Sarah
36:24
Now
Tara
36:28
Cause it would have to be like just bumpier and curved, I think.
Dave
36:30
It is bumpy.
Tara
36:32
Yeah.
Dave
36:33
Yeah. I somebody well, somebody on Discord said we have to as a society make sure this does not replace eggplant.
Sarah
36:34
Now we're back on Jizz Sheets, I don't know.
Tara
36:34
Grow up, Sarah Yeah, yes.
Dave
36:41
Yeah.
Sarah
36:42
Uh-huh.
Tara
36:43
Can a pop, there's no can of pop. Slushy, like a Slurpee, with a you know, a dome, or that could also be a frappuccino if you wish, and milkshake with like the can beside.
Dave
36:45
Oh yeah. Uh-huh. Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah. Uh-huh.
Tara
36:53
Like what you get, the silver cup that you get in an old school diner.
Dave
36:56
Oh, I think but here's the thing, if Apple 'cause everybody designs their own, right?
Sarah
36:57
Oh, yeah, okay.
Dave
37:01
So the
Tara
37:01
Mm-hmm.
Dave
37:02
The Unicorn the Unicorn. The Unicode Association, they put out descriptions of the emojis and it's up to every platform to design them. And I I just feel like Apple would just do a m typical fifties diner thing with two straws coming out of it. That's what they would do.
Tara
37:16
Yeah, probably.
Sarah
37:16
Mm-hmm.
Dave
37:17
Yeah.
Tara
37:17
But as long as the cup looks like a classic milkshake cup with like the, you know, the ridges and the like little pedestal.
Dave
37:19
Yeah.
Sarah
37:21
The flute, yeah
Tara
37:23
Yes, exactly.
Dave
37:23
Yeah.
Tara
37:23
That's fine with me.
Dave
37:25
Drydendon taking the cosmic answers at the beginning of ancient aliens. Aliens gold. Us, they're still here. I said they're still here. Make up new questions with those answers. Bonus points if they are connected by a theme, says Dry Denden.
Tara
37:41
You don't get to give up points to us. Come on now
Dave
37:45
I don't know Drydendon points might be very valuable.
Tara
37:47
That's true.
Dave
37:47
Who knows what the exchange rate is? It might be worth more than date points.
Tara
37:50
Or Dreddon points even, anyway.
Dave
37:50
I don't know Yeah. All right, so I am gonna give my questions to Tara, and Tara, you be ready to answer them in sequence. All right, here we go. What is the subject matter of Genesis' worst song from their 1983 self-titled album that begins with illegal?
Tara
38:09
Aliens Gold
Dave
38:09
Correct. If being a jerk to dental office clerks was an Olympic vent, this is the medal you would get. Who's due for another 12-hour road trip to Arizona to eat at Sweet Tomatoes?
Tara
38:21
Us They're still here, oh no
Dave
38:22
Where did the people who live in our attic and occasionally smoke up there making the hallway smell like cigarettes go? Can you repeat that? I have a tremendous amount of earwax buildup in my ears and I'm trying to clear them out with Debrox's drops.
Tara
38:36
I just said they're still here.
Dave
38:37
Thank you.
Tara
38:38
Oh my god, I forgot about the people that live in our attic. I haven't smelled that smell in a long time.
Dave
38:43
Alright. Tara, you're next.
Sarah
38:44
It's the rat.
Tara
38:45
Oh god, it probably is the rats.
Sarah
38:47
Okay.
Dave
38:47
Do you want somebody to answer them for you?
Sarah
38:48
Who
Tara
38:49
Sure, Dave.
Dave
38:50
Okay.
Tara
38:50
Oh actually I'll give it to Sarah since I answered yours.
Dave
38:52
Okay. Alright, here we go.
Tara
38:53
Okay, Sarah, you gotta answer. Sarah, who does Peter Quill hang out with?
Sarah
38:55
Okay. Aliens Gold
Tara
38:59
What color is his hair? Whom have his exploits been documented for in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies?
Sarah
39:08
Us Oh, they're still here.
Tara
39:08
What dimension did his movies end up in? Where are they going next?
Sarah
39:14
No, I just said they're still here
Tara
39:15
Thank you.
Sarah
39:19
Who would like to read the answers?
Dave
39:21
I would love to do the answers on this one.
Tara
39:22
Dave
Sarah
39:23
Thank you.
Dave
39:23
Alright, here we go.
Sarah
39:27
Who let the dogs out?
Dave
39:29
Aliens Gold Us
Sarah
39:30
Is this Benson? Who wrote the book of love? Where are my glasses?
Dave
39:38
They're still here.
Sarah
39:39
I already looked there.
Dave
39:41
I said they're still here. Fantastic.
Sarah
39:46
Uh Yeah, that was weird.
Tara
39:46
Nice, mm
Dave
39:46
More questions like that please. That was great.
Sarah
39:50
I liked it.
Dave
39:51
Last question for us. It's just for me. I just added in the last moment here. Towering Monolith wants to know, I should know this, but what is the drop that sounds like Babu Frik laughing about true crime? What is that from? That is the little thing I usually tag on to Exhibit B books true crime sales. That is from Millennium. That was a forcening last year at some point.
Tara
40:13
Yep.
Dave
40:13
That is a group of demons at a at a donut shop talking about things they like. True crime books.
Tara
40:18
Yeah, that was fun.
Dave
40:19
Alright, here comes your Ask Ask EHG questions. The tables have been turned. We're asking you to answer it. This one comes from L Triple B I just began watching the rookie and it appears there will be a reoccurring antagonist. Who would you say are the best examples of this type of role? Got an answer for that? Put it in our Discord or or or go to the episode page on our website. There is a link there where you can stick in your answer and it'll send it to our Discord on your behalf. Be like Corey M. Do that and win
Sarah
40:51
Yeah
Dave
40:52
We'll be better than it. We'll be We'll be back next week with Judgment. It is time for the tiny canon presenting this week is Double Question Asker Seth.
Clip
41:07
Hi panel, I regretfully stand before you today a coward, because I brought the most obvious candidate for the tiny cannon A total shoe-in, the the suitcase or Ozymandias of the Tiny Canon Shirley. I speak, of course, from the year of our Lord's 2017, Tom Holland lip syncing to Rihanna's umbrella So I assume you all watch this clip in full every time some algorithm or Amy Polar slaps it into your timeline. But just in case you're Dave, this is from the LL CoolJ hosted program. Lip sync battle, which apparently ran for five seasons, from twenty fifteen to twenty nineteen. Look what the pandemic robbed us of. But hey, I'm not here to pretend I've watched a lip sync battle. Nobody has. I'm simply here with a timeless two-minute and twenty-four-second clip, a perfect synthesis of performance, charisma, pop culture, and zeitgeist I'm not going to argue the merits of Holland's gender-bending performance. There are think pieces galore and fanfics that already cover that sodden ground. Nor will I speak to the technical strengths of his performance. We all know Holland has a history in dance and ballet and blah blah blah. And I certainly won't bring up the larger pop cultural moment. Are we watching in real time? Zendaya falling for Tom, overcome by a sheer riz as she crumples to the floor in a ghast joy Did this deeply stupid show gifted to us by Ladies Love Cool James himself somehow cause the now decade-long romance? Frankly, it's none of my business! No, I simply implore you to watch this undeniable clip, get Rihanna's song stuck in your head for probably a week, and vote this into the EHG lip sync tiny canon. Thank you.
Tara
42:48
Thank you, Seth. I don't do we want to keep it lip sync or do we want to put this under a musical performance? How's how how fine do we want to split this hair?
Dave
42:57
I think musical performance is fine.
Tara
42:58
Okay.
Dave
42:59
Yep.
Sarah
42:59
I agree.
Tara
43:00
I picked it for this week since um Tom Holland and Zendaya, as Seth said, are still together, are now married. They were at a press conference recently for either Spider-Man or the Odyssey, because they're in both of them, and someone yelled out from the audience, Sandaya, Mary me, and she was standing next to Tom Allen and just pointed at him. They're the coolest, I love them, but yes, they are also in the Odyssey together, pissing off all the stupidest people alive, so it felt like the right time to talk about this clip, but I, uh, to defy Seth, am the person who watched Lip Sync Battle. I think largely so that Joe Reed and I could talk about it because uh he watched it too. And I know at one point we wrote something for previously. tv about like do's and don'ts for being a good lip sync battle participant. And I don't think we talked about this one specifically because what more can one say? In my opinion is perfect and I will have more to say. But Sarah, why don't you go first?
Sarah
43:51
It starts out as uh, you know, singing in the rain Gene Kelly whip sync. And then it becomes this lip sync. And then there's like a rain machine. And this choreo is not easy. But he is completely committed, despite lacking that essential thing for this performance, an ass. He does not care He's just rocking it. Zendaya is like stunned. Like it's like paralysis at the Riz, as mentioned by Seth, and LL Cool J's evident delight and admiration for this world-changing performance is also wonderful. It's a it's just an utterly charming, positive Two minutes and you will get the song stuck in your head, but there are way worse songs to get stuck in your head. Ask me how I know. This was a delight to revisit for probably the 50th time. I had no problem with it. It was great. Dave.
Dave
44:54
Well, just in case your Dave line was very true. Haven't seen this before.
Sarah
44:59
Yeah,
Dave
45:00
I've heard about it. I've heard about it, but I've never watched it. And my question is, how long do they have to practice to nail that sequence? The dance?
Tara
45:08
If I recall correctly, they get a week.
Dave
45:09
Like it's. That's crazy that he would spend a week on this for this show. I mean, it paid dividends for him, right? Because this is like one of the big viral videos of that year, I am sure.
Tara
45:20
Oh yeah.
Sarah
45:21
Mm-hmm.
Dave
45:21
But damn, that is a lot of commitment for a really stupid show. And I was impressed by that. Like I would never spend a week doing something like that.
Tara
45:27
Mm-hmm
Dave
45:30
I don't care how big of a thing it is. I just well, first of all, I can't do it. My hip would explode and I would die.
Tara
45:35
Sure.
Dave
45:35
But uh I was very impressed by his physicality, despite his lack of ass, and the reactions of everybody around him seemed very genuine.
Tara
45:39
Mm-hmm.
Dave
45:45
I was uh tickled pink. It was very nice.
Tara
45:47
Yeah, what people might not know is that he is a legit actor.
Dave
45:47
Tar.
Tara
45:50
He started out on Billy Elliott, the musical, like the stage musical, so he has Skills, he knows how to learn choreography. Is as we can see in this clip, a legitimately good dancer is also playing Fred Astaire in a biopic Soonish and is planning to do all of his own dancing, like why wouldn't he? But what also gets me about this is that he's not doing jokes straight guy drag. Like he's got a wig on and he's wearing little hot pants, but he's not doing like, look how funny it is that I'm lip syncing to a female performance.
Sarah
46:13
No No, he's not cheating it at all.
Tara
46:21
Yeah, he's just doing justice to the song and like he totally does.
Sarah
46:24
Mm-hmm.
Tara
46:27
It is full commitment. I hope every Time Zendaya watches it, she's like, That's my man, because it is like she's if she's not falling in love with him in this moment, she should be.
Sarah
46:33
mhm, mhm
Tara
46:38
And then he ends it in a death drop. Like, get this kid in the jellicle ball. I know it's closing, but hurry up
Dave
46:44
All right, let's put this to the official vote, Sarah D. Bunting.
Sarah
46:48
Absolutely.
Dave
46:49
I agree, Tara.
Tara
46:50
Of course
Dave
46:51
Alright, so Umbrella from LipSync Battle, you're hereby inducted to the Extra Hot Great tiny musical performance canon.
Clip
47:03
Americans love a winner. Yup. And will not tolerate a loser. Nope.
Dave
47:09
It is time to discover who are our not-quite winners and not quite losers of the week. I will go first. My not quite winner is Robocop. Apprehensive about this one because are they actually going to understand what was happening in Robocop, the Paul Verhoven movie?
Tara
47:25
Apparently they they are l targeting corporate greed, so yes
Dave
47:28
Okay, good. I looked up the showrunner for this. His name is Peter Ocko, and he has a very varied background. He started on Dinosaurs.
Tara
47:38
Great.
Dave
47:38
He's been here for a while.
Tara
47:39
Sure
Dave
47:40
He was working on Dead Like Me. Remember that show from Million Years Ago?
Tara
47:44
Sure.
Dave
47:44
Pushing Daisies, The Office, Elementary, The Leftovers, Lodge 49, where he was the showrunner.
Tara
47:50
Mm
Dave
47:50
And something called Moonhaven, which I don't remember, but that was relatively recently.
Tara
47:53
I vaguely recall that. So it sounds like he has weirdly a lot of experience with shows where people are like kind of dead and kind of not.
Dave
48:00
Mm-hmm.
Tara
48:01
Between dead like me and pushing daisies and the leftovers. So this will be perfect for him.
Dave
48:06
Yep. So we'll see about that one. Not quite loser of the week is Dutton Ranch, the Yellowstone successor show. Ed Harris, who was on that show apparently, says he felt misled by his inconsequential role and wanted to get the Fuck out of there according to variety. And that's fine, you know, nobody likes to be hornswoggled into something like that to use right.
Tara
48:29
Sure. Or underused when you're Ed Harris, a multiple Oscar nominee
Dave
48:34
But here's the thing, here's the truth, here's a little nugget. Producers also cut a scene where he was supposed to sing. And if you've seen the Ed Harris directed movie Appalooza. You know he really wanted to do that because he created the Appalooza End Credits song and he sang it himself and he likes to warble, let me tell ya.
Tara
48:49
Yep Yeah
Dave
48:56
And so I think he wanted to relive his glory days of Appalooza, but couldn't and got all got all pissy.
Tara
49:02
Yeah.
Dave
49:03
Yep. All right.
Tara
49:04
It's rough.
Dave
49:04
Ed Harris, sorry, dude. Sarah.
Sarah
49:07
Yeah, but also it's Dutton Ranch. Like, what did you think was gonna happen, bro?
Tara
49:10
Yeah.
Sarah
49:12
My winner, my not quite winner, is only murders in the building, which added Olivia Coleman. I believe the upcoming season is in London, so that makes a sort of sense, but also I guess literally everybody has to be on that show now, and I don't hate it. I think they do a pretty good job incorporating some heavy hitters.
Tara
49:28
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
49:32
My not quite loser is Investigation Discovery, which is using AI to bring serial killer Aileen Warnos, quote, back to life for a three-part documentary series.
Tara
49:44
No thanks.
Sarah
49:45
Apparently this process involved like green screen video mapping. They cast an actor and then like I don't know just mapped it on digitally. It took like three years for them to do. And it's like, wh why?
Dave
49:59
Really? You just get somebody off Reddit to do a deepfake for you in 30 minutes.
Tara
50:01
Yeah, why why do this
Dave
50:04
Go on Fiverr, you can probably find somebody to do that.
Sarah
50:06
And also there's so much footage of Aileen Mornos. There were many documentaries made. There is extensive footage available of her. This is a sort of not I mean interesting. It's a little bit glib of a way to put it, but they have been using AI-generated victim impact statements from murder victims, or at least once they have. at sentencing hearings and I think there is maybe some utility to the idea of reanimating with AI that might be an investigative tool, but it's also like already two one and a half feet into a Black Mirror episode.
Dave
50:50
Yeah.
Sarah
50:50
So I don't know. I do think this is like why who was this for?
Tara
50:51
Mm-hmm. Yeah
Dave
50:55
I mean putting all the technical world burning attributes of AI aside for a second, the idea of using a machine to like resurrect somebody's testimony about something like that just seems in poor taste. Like at the very least, get a voice actor to do it, right?
Tara
51:10
Yeah.
Dave
51:13
So that you can eject some
Sarah
51:14
Yeah,
Dave
51:15
Humanity, even if that humanity is only apparent in your IMDB listing, it seems like the least you can do as a person talking about other people dying.
Tara
51:19
Yeah.
Sarah
51:22
Right.
Tara
51:23
Yep
Sarah
51:24
Yeah
Dave
51:25
All right.
Tara
51:26
My not quite winner of the week is the latest Netflix Harlan Coben adaptation, which is adding among others. Chloe Feynman just exiting SNL and Ben McKenzie, just exiting a documentary about the scam that is crypto. But the reason I chose this is because the show is called Myron Bolitar. And I just feel like this is the this is such a flex to be like Harlan Coben is such a draw. All we have to do is put his name on it. We can call it anything else. We could call a show Myron Bolitar and people will watch, and I guess we'll find out if that's true.
Sarah
52:01
Mm-hmm. Harlan Coben's John Cocktoaston. Okay
Tara
52:06
Well, or or you know, Harlan Coben's, you know, Tommy John surgery. Like, let's see how far we can push this. Like, can we call anything Harlan Coben's anything and people will tune in cause
Dave
52:18
Harlan Coba stars at fart in your mouth.
Tara
52:23
Harlan Coben weeping pus ballister. Like I you know it's
Sarah
52:28
Oh
Dave
52:28
Harlan Coba's dick in a chee chir chipper. Tree chipper.
Sarah
52:32
Erlin Coben's Jizz Sheet saga, Colon The Golden Raisins.
Tara
52:35
Yes, exactly.
Dave
52:36
Yes, there we go.
Tara
52:37
There we go
Dave
52:38
That's the show.
Tara
52:39
There we go.
Dave
52:39
Yes.
Tara
52:41
Well, this is gonna be kind of a come down, as it were, but my not quite loser of the week is um the
Dave
52:44
Ha ha
Sarah
52:45
Oh, yeah.
Tara
52:47
I'm glad my mom died. Adaptation at Apple. This is of course the adaptation of Jeanette McCurdy's memoir of the same name. Jennifer Annon Ston was going to play the mom in question, but she has decided to leave the show, which is, you know, Sarah and I in our Colleague Stephanie Green of the Green Screen were discussing this on text when this was announced uh yesterday and sort of like, is this surprising? Is it not? You know, maybe it's not. I sort of thought she was interested in doing edgier stuff, mm, having just seen her in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Tape, like really playing against hype in a palarious way Now the scripts are starting to come out, maybe she's like, oh, I don't want to do all of this stuff.
Sarah
53:29
Yeah, maybe I didn't read that closely enough.
Tara
53:30
So who can blame her?
Sarah
53:33
Bye
Tara
53:33
Yeah.
Dave
53:35
Did you see that they announced morning shows ending with the next season?
Tara
53:38
I did see that.
Sarah
53:40
Oh, really?
Tara
53:40
I did.
Dave
53:41
Yeah.
Tara
53:41
Yes, season five will be the end. So um send send your thoughts and prayers to Christina Tucker
Dave
53:46
Yeah.
Tara
53:46
Although maybe she's happy that her torment is nearly over. We'll find out.
Sarah
53:50
Well, really.
Dave
53:51
Perhaps a fingers crossed for let's go out in the most bazoo style we can.
Tara
53:54
Uh they should.
Dave
53:55
In which case it's all worth it.
Sarah
53:55
Mm-hmm.
Tara
53:57
Yep, true.
Dave
53:57
Alright.
Tara
54:04
Welcome in, grandpas. Uh you missed So much show and so much disgusting talk that you'll never know what it was unless you join at the five dollar level, four dollars if you make it annual, extrahotgreat. com slash club to upgrade your pledge. We would love to have you for Not just all of this episode, but all of every episode we've ever done. The 420 that came before this as well. So again, extra at great. com slash club. Today's extra credit comes from me. I've called it Be Kind Rewind because ten years ago this very week Funai, which was believed to be the last company still manufacturing VCRs in Japan. announced that due to a difficulty acquiring parts, it was getting out of the VCR business and that was kind of it for the VHS format. So I thought to Mark the anniversary we could get a little nostalgic and have some, you know, some starter questions about our lives as VHS consumers. Starting with our rental store of choice. For our family, we went with the chains, which were jumbo video with a
Dave
55:09
Jumbo Video. I had a friend that worked at Jumbo Video.
Tara
55:11
That's probably a that was a hot job to have in high school.
Dave
55:14
He loved it. Yeah.
Tara
55:15
I bet.
Dave
55:16
Mm-hmm. Jumbo Video is famous for having the popcorn machine inside their video store, the first to do that in our area.
Sarah
55:21
Oh yep.
Tara
55:22
Yep.
Dave
55:23
Yeah.
Tara
55:23
They had complimentary popcorn. That was big. We also went to Roger's video. That was also our choir store of choice when we lived in Toronto. And then Blockbuster eventually came. But they were they didn't come until later as I recall. They were late to Canada. But I also want to give a shout out to 241 Video, which was across the street from my apartment in Cabbage Town when I was in grad school. For some reason I guess I was not working that hard or it wasn't that difficult because I remember m renting movies from there all the time. And they had a really good selection of indie m videos too, which was important 'cause this was 1996 and 97, a golden age for indie video rentals. I saw like, you know, Manny and Lowe and many others. And shout out to the little place that we walked to and played El Rey. Do you remember this place, Dave?
Dave
56:08
It was on cushing. It was on cushing, yep.
Tara
56:09
Yep. That was a good store too. They also had a good selection.
Dave
56:12
Yep.
Tara
56:13
Anyone else? Any other memories of the stores?
Sarah
56:16
The chains did not come to my town in North Jersey ever, and then not I don't think there were any at either mall that was nearby. So but we did have video station which opened like the second home video started being an actual thing. Their signage and font were Immediately dated. It was some Tron shit. They moved locations a couple of times and kept the sign at the insistence of customers who were like, This is so corny.
Dave
56:42
Yeah.
Sarah
56:47
Please don't get rid of it. It was also pretty well stocked given it was like the Jersey suburbs in the Reagan era. Fortunately And then later in my adolescence, a close friend of mine worked there, so I got the occasional discount slash pass on turning in stuff late and was privy to employee interpersonal drama which was extensive. And then as a 20-something, I had a blockbuster not even a block away, thank God.
Tara
57:10
Nice.
Sarah
57:15
But thanks to dating a film nerd at the time, we spent a lot of time on the train to go to Kim's.
Tara
57:22
Yeah
Dave
57:23
I put a graphic in the uh chat. Was it this font?
Sarah
57:27
No, it was the one that's like slightly more plum vertically, and then it just has the little it's like the war games font, I would say.
Dave
57:28
No, okay.
Tara
57:37
Okay
Dave
57:38
Oh, okay. Look up uh while I'm talking, look up Serpentine font.
Sarah
57:39
Yeah.
Dave
57:42
Tell me if it's that one.
Sarah
57:42
Okay
Dave
57:43
I remember getting my family into the idea of home video because I was absolutely ready to watch movies at home. It's like it was like you forget before this it was TV or nothing.
Tara
57:50
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
57:54
It was TV, or if you're lucky you had a computer, which I probably didn't at this particular moment in history, which would be early eighties, or fucking go outside.
Tara
58:03
Pass
Dave
58:04
And VCRs were tremendously expensive when the they started bubbling up and video stores finally started bubbling up.
Tara
58:12
I remember them being in the world. expensive even to rent. I remember the place we went to in Regina, they were like, it was like $100 to have a VCR for the weekend and movies were $10 each to rent.
Dave
58:18
Oh gosh. That's probably because they took so long to ship across the prairies in the middle of winter.
Tara
58:24
Yes, yes, yes, they were in in the Ingalls covered wagon
Dave
58:28
No, it wasn't that expensive because I remember convincing my parents to rent one for the first time and it was like a package deal. You got to rent it for a weekend for three days. And then also you get five videos to choose from.
Tara
58:42
Yeah, mm-hmm
Dave
58:42
And then if you want more, you get more at the regular price. And I finally convinced them to do that for a weekend. And I got to pick two and then my parents got to pick the other ones.
Tara
58:52
Ooh, luxury.
Dave
58:53
Yeah. And then my dad was hooked. And so it wasn't too far after that, probably within the year, that we got our own VCR that had a corded remote
Tara
59:02
Uh, my grandparents had that too.
Dave
59:04
Yeah. Top loading corded remote VCR. But this was an era at the beginning of the VHS epoch where the only video stores were independent mom and pop shops. At the end of our street, Elgin and Pine in Thorold, Ontario, there was a place called Thorold Video Center, and oh okay, you've just put the font in there. Yeah, that's okay, that's a um a uh character recognition font from the seventies, those little bubbles.
Tara
59:28
Nice
Dave
59:30
are how you scan and the reader reads the uh letters. You obviously see that's this font in um on Sears price tags of the day lookup
Tara
59:38
Oh, yeah, yeah
Sarah
59:39
Mm-hmm.
Dave
59:39
M M-I-C-R font and see if it's that one. We're gonna get to the font mystery. Anyways, back to Thorold Video Center. It was a converted living room in somebody's house. The front of the house
Tara
59:51
Wow
Dave
59:52
Used to be their living room looking out onto Pine Street, and then they just close it off. Once in a while that door was open and you see grandma watching the TV in the rest of their house.
Tara
01:00:01
Well
Dave
01:00:04
They had the dollar shelf. Actually they had the dollar shelf and the two dollar shelf. And my dad would only rent from the dollar shelf because that was John Cole's thrifty way. And I remember the way they had the system. Like later on, you would take the box, like at Blockbuster Video, up to the counter and they would, you know, give you the uh hard case version of it.
Tara
01:00:21
Yeah
Dave
01:00:24
But this one, they had little pockets taped to all of the boxes with like typical price tags. You know, you know the ones I'm talking about, like the paper price tags, and you would take that to it.
Tara
01:00:31
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
01:00:34
A lot of sense memory involved with early VCR rental places. And my dad would rent the worst movies. Because they're from the dollar rack. And they're not putting Star Wars on the dollar rack.
Tara
01:00:43
Yes.
Dave
01:00:45
You always had to pay $2.
Tara
01:00:46
No
Sarah
01:00:46
Mm-mm.
Dave
01:00:46
50 for Star Wars. You never got it for a dollar. No, he would get things like Q, the Dragon, that threatened New York City. I think because the the art sort of inferred that there was a naked sunbather on top of one of the skyscrapers that the dragon would visit. And it turned out to be true.
Tara
01:01:03
Sure, mm
Dave
01:01:04
But he had a very B movie sort of taste because that's what the dollar rack offered. The one movie that he rented that initial weekend that wasn't that was Gandhi.
Tara
01:01:15
Oh, well that's because that's value for dollar.
Dave
01:01:18
That it was, because it was a two-tapper.
Tara
01:01:20
Yeah.
Sarah
01:01:20
Oh my god, Gandhi will come up again in this in this segment.
Tara
01:01:25
One more store memory peaches video that I remember going to with Dave and our friends John and Tammy, Tammy Everts's past guests on the show.
Dave
01:01:32
Yep.
Tara
01:01:33
Uh, that was the place that was by their place.
Dave
01:01:36
Yeah, it was nearby.
Tara
01:01:37
That was that we went we spent a lot of time walking around there waiting for John to pick the most fucked up thing that they had.
Dave
01:01:41
Oh god. Hey, you guys wanna watch Roger Corman's Carnosaur 2?
Tara
01:01:46
Do you want to watch Barefoot Gen, the anime about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
Dave
01:01:52
With five minutes of people melting a as we nosh on our Cheetos and Coke treat.
Tara
01:01:54
Sit for real? Do you want to watch this uh Gilbert and Sullivan knockoff about someone incesting their child on a musical production of some operetta?
Dave
01:02:06
The other store they took to the other store they took us to was the unfortunately named Bandito Video, as I recall.
Tara
01:02:07
Thanks, John. Oh yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:02:12
Alright, let's move on.
Tara
01:02:12
I mean Peaches isn't that much better, honestly. Repeat Rental, this one is gonna strike a chord with Sarah D. Bunting, Walking and Talking, one that I had to go back to multiple times. on a VHS before I finally bought it on DVD.nicole Hall of Center's directorial debut, a movie I nearly have memorized probably.
Sarah
01:02:33
She just kept curling and spraying. Yeah, I own that one in multiple media
Tara
01:02:37
Hello, cookie.
Sarah
01:02:40
We went back to the same like cheesy mid eighties horror movies over and over again, The Pinhead Oeuvre, April Fool's Day.
Tara
01:02:44
Mm-hmm. Oh yeah.
Sarah
01:02:47
In my Households we rented the changeling a bunch of times because my mother saw like the second half of it on the late movie and then we had to go and find it and watch the first half of it.
Tara
01:02:57
Yep.
Sarah
01:02:57
And then it was so fucked up and our dad wasn't home and he's like, Why are you guys still awake? Why won't anyone go near the piano? And we're like, Joseph. I mean, okay, so that was the whole thing.
Tara
01:03:09
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:03:10
We watch it again. Dad's like, hmm, good flick. Goes to sleep. We're like, nobody else in the house had slept in like 48 hours.
Tara
01:03:15
Help me.
Sarah
01:03:19
My family had HBO brag and um a lot of the teen movies went straight to weekend afternoon Poppy Field slots like a year after. They left theaters, so friends of mine were repeatedly renting things like Lost Boys and then disappearing into their bunks, but that wasn't any of my business.
Tara
01:03:36
Sure. Mm-hmm. Dave.
Dave
01:03:39
It's easy to forget now that at the beginning of the VHS era Movies were priced to not sell to the general public.
Tara
01:03:47
Yes, mm hmm
Dave
01:03:47
They were only there to sell to businesses.
Sarah
01:03:47
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:03:49
So movies would typically cost at the time, early 80s, $75 to $85.
Sarah
01:03:54
Yes, eighty dollars totally.
Tara
01:03:55
Yes.
Dave
01:03:56
Yeah, which would be, I don't know, like probably double now, right?
Tara
01:03:56
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:03:59
160 bucks or so. So and it was years before they started to hit consumer level prices.
Tara
01:04:06
Yes, I think Disney started that
Dave
01:04:06
So obviously Right. So obviously I started renting Star Wars a lot and then Empire Strikes Back and all those Rays of the Lost Ark, all the greatest hits of the 80s Tron with this font.
Sarah
01:04:09
Yeah.
Tara
01:04:18
Yeah.
Sarah
01:04:18
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:04:19
Oh, you have font updates, Sarah?
Sarah
01:04:20
Uh yes, I put it in the chat.
Tara
01:04:21
Yes.
Dave
01:04:22
I know, but people can't read the chat on listening up to the podcast.
Sarah
01:04:25
Yes. I'm sorry, I uh was waiting for the prompt. Uh yes, it is the MICR font microcomp that uh Dave mentioned earlier.
Dave
01:04:31
Very good. Yep.
Tara
01:04:33
Mm-hmm, noise.
Dave
01:04:35
Another font mystery solved. Dark Crystal I remember renting a lot for some reason, even the movie really creeped me out.
Tara
01:04:40
Oh God. Uh-huh.
Dave
01:04:42
It was that weird uncanny valley and then like the one Gelfling getting stabbed in the back was like and the Skexies, the fucking vulture things.
Tara
01:04:47
Oh man. Mm-mm.
Sarah
01:04:50
mm mm
Tara
01:04:50
Mm-mm.
Dave
01:04:51
Yeah, here I am renting it multiple times like a glutton for punishment. But yeah, it was just like all my favorites until the point where you could buy them and then I would buy them.
Tara
01:05:02
Yeah.
Dave
01:05:02
But I was well into my teens before that could happen.
Tara
01:05:05
Yeah, it took a while for that to be part of like our consumer behavior, I think. Because I remember when my parents came home with the full Star Wars trilogy on VHS because they had them at Costco. And like none of us were that into Star Wars, but it's like, well, it's here and it's thirty five dollars or whatever it was, so like we might as well own this.
Dave
01:05:23
Yeah.
Tara
01:05:25
Why not?
Dave
01:05:29
Tape insurance, right?
Tara
01:05:30
Right.
Dave
01:05:30
You paid a quarter or fifty cents on top of your bill, and then if your VCR ate your tape, which would happen quite frequently,
Tara
01:05:35
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:05:37
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:05:38
Then you didn't have to pay the $85 to replace it. I remember one time I was renting from Jumbo Video
Tara
01:05:45
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:05:46
And I rented something and I left it in my car to tape back the next day and then it got very, very sunny and warm when it shouldn't have.
Tara
01:05:53
Yep.
Dave
01:05:54
And the sun, I'm not joking, turned the tape, it curled up like an armadillo and became a ball.
Tara
01:06:00
Wow, that's crazy.
Sarah
01:06:01
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:06:02
And I went to Jumbo Video, I put this on the counter. For some miracle, it was like the one time I bought tape insurance And they're like, oh, it doesn't cover this kind of damage, only VCR. And I flipped the thing over and it said, tell me where it says that on the terms and conditions. And they're like, all right, bye.
Sarah
01:06:17
Mm-hmm
Dave
01:06:18
I'm like, yeah. And I was like, backing out with middle fingers going. And it was like an art house film, so it probably was still into my teens like $60, $70.
Tara
01:06:24
Yeah Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
01:06:30
Yep.
Tara
01:06:31
Take that Grey Gardens or whatever it was.
Dave
01:06:32
I don't remember what was. Might have been a lesbian art art moves movie now that I think about it.
Tara
01:06:36
Sure.
Dave
01:06:36
Yeah.
Tara
01:06:37
Uh the one that I remember buying for myself was randomly four weddings and a funeral. And I probably did watch that a fair amount, s Sarah.
Dave
01:06:42
Yeah.
Sarah
01:06:44
We were tape it off HBO family, so I don't think I bought one for myself until probably college or later, but the Wellfleet flea market was an annual stop when we were on the Cape.
Tara
01:06:52
Yeah
Sarah
01:06:58
It was just like half an acre of tapes in bins. Something for everyone. So I think I got soap dish and Tootsie in one for like five bucks total
Tara
01:07:07
Oh, nice. Two good choices, damn.
Sarah
01:07:12
It was still like to buy them new you would have to have paid like $24. 99 each. So that was a pretty good deal. I think I still have the Tootsie one.
Tara
01:07:21
Nice.
Dave
01:07:22
There was some forbidden knowledge I learned in the early VCR period when Thorough Video Center became so big that they opened two more
Tara
01:07:31
Oh shit.
Dave
01:07:31
locations, including a Thorold Video Center in St. Catharines, which probably created some sort of universal paradox.
Tara
01:07:35
Ooh. Yep.
Dave
01:07:40
They started having to hire outside of the family. And the greasy pimpled teenager that was manning the desk that day is like, Psst, did you know if you had a second VCR and these special cords and you hook them together, you can tape it to a blank tape? Forbidden knowledge acquired. My friend had a VCR.
Sarah
01:07:56
Yeah.
Dave
01:07:57
I had a VCR. We would give each other the VCRs for the weekend, trade off, and then we would tape everything we could. rent 'em, tape them. It was like ten years before the industry caught up and put copy protection inside of the VCR. So when you did cable to cable copies, it would dim the screen up and down somehow it was called like
Sarah
01:08:16
Mm-hmm.
Tara
01:08:16
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:08:17
macrovision or something like that. But for the longest time you could just do it. I fucking copied everything. Movies I didn't want really to watch ever again.
Tara
01:08:27
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:08:27
I don't know if any pictures exist, but all the shelfing in my teenage hovel of a bedroom was just JVC tapes up the wazoo with
Tara
01:08:37
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:08:37
Oh yeah.
Dave
01:08:38
Three movies apiece taped at the lowest speed or the Remember?
Sarah
01:08:42
Oh my God, so grainy
Tara
01:08:43
Yep. Mm-hmm, of course.
Sarah
01:08:45
Yeah, you could also edit using that setup. Ask me how I know. It's me, the co-host of Moist Owlet.
Dave
01:08:51
So I didn't buy anything for the longest time and I think when I bought it, I just bought the hits that I was talking about earlier, your Star Wars, your Raiders, all your Spielberg Spielberg shit and stuff like that that I was into.
Tara
01:08:52
Yeah. Yeah
Dave
01:09:03
than you know, the action films of Schwarzenegger and Stallone stuff from the eighties. So but I didn't buy anything for a long time 'cause I had learned the dark arts.
Tara
01:09:12
Nice.
Dave
01:09:13
Yep.
Tara
01:09:13
Wow. I know someone who, and I won't put them on blast, but when Netflix still had discs, just every single thing they got from Netflix, they
Dave
01:09:22
Rip it.
Tara
01:09:22
But they go ahead and rip it, put it on a drive, why not?
Sarah
01:09:23
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:09:25
Yeah, I think you just put half of America on blast, but okay.
Sarah
01:09:28
Yeah, probably.
Tara
01:09:30
No comment. Shows that you consistently recorded off TV. I have of course had a few kids in the hall, friends I was still recording up to like when we were barely into the D VR era even, because I just wanted to have them. And I when I used to in college watch Letterman every night. If I was watching it live, I would record it. If there was a segment worth keeping, I would keep it. If not, in the commercial, I would just like back it up and go again, because I was a real Fucking nerd.
Dave
01:09:57
Yeah.
Tara
01:09:57
But but it started with kids in the hall and I know my parents at one point were like, Stop using all our tapes when they couldn't find one of theirs and I was like, I buy my own tapes and started like showing them receipts. Leave my tapes alone.
Dave
01:10:12
Tape, tape, tape discussion.
Tara
01:10:12
Anyways. Yeah.
Dave
01:10:14
You're recording stuff off television.
Tara
01:10:15
Yes.
Dave
01:10:16
Were you really sad when you didn't have enough of the letter stickers to put the title of it on Spine, or did you just go straight to writing it on?
Tara
01:10:21
No, I just wrote it with a Sharpie.
Sarah
01:10:23
No.
Dave
01:10:24
I was always sad when I couldn't spell it.
Sarah
01:10:24
Mm-hmm. Same.
Dave
01:10:26
I would keep all of the old labels in order to build up my letter supply, because when they ran out and I didn't have enough ease to put in the title.
Tara
01:10:34
No, I would do that with um cassette tapes though, like audio cassettes. The ones that came with extra stickers because I used to make my own covers for all of my mixtapes.
Dave
01:10:42
Sure.
Tara
01:10:43
Anyway, but that's enough that's a discussion for another day. Sarah
Sarah
01:10:46
Well, we've all heard of how I use those little letter stickers to Mark my own tapes after the Gandhi incident. I'll get back to it. But it was my initials on it, SDB, and then my brother switched it to SBD, which is my monogram, which is why I don't have anything monogrammed, because huh.
Tara
01:11:05
Classic, uh huh.
Sarah
01:11:08
He'd switched it and then it was like three days before I noticed. And he kept trying to get me into the den or being like, Do you know what's on your t one of your tapes right now and I'm like, why are you being weird? Are you having a stroke? And then I finally noticed and was like, oh, come on. And he was laughing from like two floors away. Uh he um would still be laughing about it now. Except I killed him. The reason that we had to have our own labeled tapes is that I was not paying attention, threw something in to tape a special episode of General Hospital because I had to be at the orthodontist when it was airing.
Tara
01:11:42
Mm-hmm. Yep
Sarah
01:11:45
Oh my god, the 14-year-oldest thing ever, and taped over Gandhi. Because El Chipo Dave Sr. had taped it off HBO, and not only was I still hearing about it as recently as like 2025, He still has the fucking tape. Like, it did you keep it as a warning to the other tapes? You have not had the equipment means to watch any of these in like 20 years. I don't even know. I just saw it the other day when I was at his house and was like, you know what?
Tara
01:12:15
Wow
Sarah
01:12:16
Fine. I if we move it, like it's probably a load-bearing tape at this point.
Dave
01:12:20
Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah
01:12:21
Let's just leave it.
Tara
01:12:21
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:12:22
I like that there is a Gandhi incident that isn't him being assassinated out there.
Sarah
01:12:28
Yeah. It was me like he was legit pissed off, and I was like, you never get pissed off about anything
Tara
01:12:36
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:12:36
Like Reagan, the assassination attempt on Reagan did not get this big a reaction, but when I accidentally taped over part of Gandhi with like, I don't know, Frisco and Felicia's wedding reception, like, I get it, but also Don't like you tape this off of HBO, like you got away with it and then you didn't.
Tara
01:12:54
Yeah.
Sarah
01:12:54
You got out cheaped by your kid.
Dave
01:12:57
The year is 2054. We're at a New Jersey Cemetery. There is a grave hole a cop has just been lowered into it. Rose, rose, rose. Claw Gandhi tape as Sarah is interred for eternity. I never copied anything off a VCR. I mean never copied anything off TV on a VCR.
Tara
01:13:16
Really?
Dave
01:13:17
Yeah, I just didn't really care them. I was too busy pirating movies, I guess.
Tara
01:13:20
Yeah
Dave
01:13:20
Yeah, and plus I was one of those people that never set the clock in the VCR because I would be unplugging the VCR all the time to do these swaps until I until I
Tara
01:13:26
To do your to yep.
Sarah
01:13:28
Oh yeah.
Dave
01:13:29
found one and I was like it's it was so complicated to set the clock.
Tara
01:13:30
Yeah
Dave
01:13:32
I I understood it. I wasn't one of those Carson joke people that are like I don't know how to set the clock.
Tara
01:13:35
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Dave
01:13:37
I just couldn't be bothered.
Tara
01:13:38
Yeah, no, I get it.
Dave
01:13:39
Yep.
Sarah
01:13:39
Yeah.
Tara
01:13:40
I was the only one who knew how to set the VCR for maybe the whole time we had a VCR at home.
Dave
01:13:45
What percentage of 80s comedians had a 12 o'clock flashing clock joke?
Tara
01:13:50
Oh God, like sixty-five.
Sarah
01:13:51
Oh my god, seventy.
Dave
01:13:51
Yeah, at least.
Tara
01:13:52
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:13:53
Yep.
Sarah
01:13:53
Yep.
Tara
01:13:53
All right, finally Is there a piece of VHS only media that you wish you could recover from Oblivion? This was a this was a an artifact. It might still be somewhere in this house, actually. And it was the yearbook from my last year in Marching Band when we were on tour. That was the year that ended with the tour where we went six for six.
Sarah
01:14:11
Oh
Tara
01:14:14
We won every competition we entered. that year, 1988. So yes, I would watch that again if I could, but I can't. Wait, 89. Dave, anything?
Dave
01:14:24
Yeah, along the same lines when I was a kid. I'm gonna call this a documentary movie, but it really was it really just was scenes taped in my sister's camcorder of me playing video games on my Commodore sixty-four and then I edited it or
Tara
01:14:35
Yep. Oh
Sarah
01:14:39
Oh my God
Dave
01:14:40
When I say edit it, I had to record it in sequence because I didn't know how to edit on these kind of things yet. But it was called Violence and Video Games. It really just was me playing violent video games like Karataka and Prince of Persia and showing all the ways people died. in them and then just like stringing them all together.
Tara
01:14:55
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:14:57
It wasn't for school or anything. It was just something I thought I would do. It was my Dawson Leery moment.
Tara
01:15:01
Yeah.
Dave
01:15:01
Yeah And I don't know what happened to it, but I would love to see it again because not only did I tape myself playing video games, but I did ASCII art of the title on my Commodore sixty four and tape that like the opening credits of the movie, you know Directed by David T. Cole, written by David D.
Tara
01:15:18
Mm-hmm.
Dave
01:15:19
Cole. Violence video games in big diet letters.
Sarah
01:15:19
Oh my god. I wish that I wish that still existed.
Tara
01:15:23
I do too.
Dave
01:15:23
I do too.
Sarah
01:15:23
I'd watch that.
Dave
01:15:25
Cause I think I also when I was playing the games put music in the room as I was playing it as if it was going to be the soundtrack to the show. I was trying to do as much in the moment as I could, obviously.
Tara
01:15:34
Yes. Mm-hmm
Dave
01:15:36
But the thing is I would play the same song over a few different bits. And of course it never lined up when it cut. So the song would be like and it just It's real tragedy that it doesn't exist anymore because it would have been hilarious to watch now.
Tara
01:15:52
Sarah, take us home
Sarah
01:15:52
Hello man. Okay. Well, not quite forty years ago, my family's church sponsored a trip to Peru and Chile because that's where you could really see Haley's Comet. So my dad, who had taken maybe ten minutes of vacation in his entire working life to that point, was like, well. Packed up his stuff, including the giant like five o'clock news size home video camera that we had, and uh recorded all his travels and these tapes of his trip to Chile, it was there were like ten of them and he was like sending them home like on a burrow and then a DHL package would show up. The camera was not nearly good enough to pick up anything. Like Haley's Comet is like it's bright. You can see it, but not with this camera. So a lot of the tapes are him lying on his back, looking at the night sky and taping, and it's just his side of conversations, and there's this like, we're holy in soothingness to it, like
Tara
01:16:56
Yeah.
Sarah
01:16:56
You could it was like, oh it's Mr. Von Klemper going to take a piss and then he's coming back, it's like you know, any scorpions out there? It's very funny
Tara
01:17:04
Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:17:04
And there's also one seat. Oh my god, I'm laughing even thinking about it. They were taking a train up toward Machu Picchu. And then after that you have to like hike or get a donkey or whatever. So he was just out a train window because it was a very beautiful scenic train. twisty route up the side of this mountain and then this sapling absolutely wrecked his shit. Like you could see it going for like half a while. We were just like dad, dad, dad, dad. He's like This was already recorded, you know that, right? I was like, d weren't you aware? WAP And then he's laughing. Oh my god, it was very funny.
Tara
01:17:46
Oh, my God.
Sarah
01:17:46
I am almost sure my brother had these transferred to DVDs at some point, but if I could get a tattoo of that sapling wrecking my dad's video camera shit
Tara
01:17:50
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Sarah
01:17:58
on my face instead of my real face, I would do it. That would just be my personality. It was extremely funny. Love you, Dave Sr. But oh my god, that was great.
Dave
01:18:08
Alright guys, that is it for another episode of Extra Extra Hot Great. We boldly went where we've been each season talking about the new batch of stranges news worldses. before answering your burning ass E H G questions like What's your Jizz pitch? and what's the next emoji you need? Seth, noted coward, put Tom Holland's lip sync battle under the tiny musical performance canon umbrella We celebrated those who weren't quite the best and worst of the week and wrapped it all up with memories of days of VHS past. Next up, Furious! Remember.

This is Extra Hot Great Minis. Today's topic is Ready Viewer One. Hey everybody! I thought uh for today's mini we could talk a little bit about what network primetime program we would like to play as a video game and I bet Dave can predict which one I picked. So let's go to Dave and we'll see if I'm right, Dave. Okay, mine is Shark Tank. I've never watched one episode. But I think if you can design a video game where you sort of Lego build a product somehow with attributes and it's a food product, it's a household product and you kind of build something that has a purpose and then you have to pitch it to people and they have to market it. But the hook is it doesn't work if you're just building a standalone game you play by yourself. This Shark Tank idea has to be what they call a MMO, a massively multiplayer game. So you're actually building and pitching and selling it to other people who are doing the same. Got it. So it's not a computer trying to figure out if what you made is good. It's actual people. But it gives you all the building blocks and all the sort of presentation elements of it. Doesn't even need to necessarily be like the show format. It can just be about really building and selling a product, which is really interesting to me. I love that kind of stuff. But I think if you actually had it working with real people, that actually would be a compelling product. Yeah, I like it. Yeah. Uh all right, Tara. Well mine it before I noticed the network part was shameless, because I feel like if you had a shameless Sims, it would be a lot of uh really interesting challenges. How to uh get your dad up from where he's passed out in the bathroom, how to uh navigate the drug dealing business, uh, how to do all your daily errands when you have an ankle monitor on, etc. But since it's network, I'm going to go with Parenthood Sims because uh there's a lot of uh characters that I would like to um put through their paces and maybe make different decisions than they did, and uh I think that a a stripped-down video game version of Adam Braverman would not really be that different from the Adam Braverman that we actually saw on the show. Eve. Well I was sure someone was gonna pick Bob's burgers, uh, so I did not pick that, but that would have been good. Yep. Since I was sure someone was gonna pick that, uh I think that is a companion piece to Kim Kardashian Hollywood. I think Madam Secretary DC, you're doing the same thing. You're dealing with anger tweets. Yep. Uh you're going to events, you're uh hooking up with your hot husband. Yep. You're saving the day. You're looking amazing in in the Madam Secretary version of it, sort of managed pants. You're walking effortlessly in heels and uh no one ever dies. Sarah. Well, based on my love for the old school Perry Mason typing game from my childhood, uh, I'm going with the good wife. And you earn uh as you go along, if you're doing well in your cases and managing to balance your personal and professional lives, you earn collarless jackets. And I'm very glad that you picked Parenthood because I was remembering uh another floppy disc based game from my childhood, which I believe was called Life the Game. It was like the multiple choice questions and you started like as a fetus. Yes. And I was like, how would you adapt? Oh yeah, parenthood. Right. So well done everyone. Great job, good week, thank you, Eve. Thank you.
